The Backroom is back open and we managed to get reservations for 3 people (2 adults and 1 child). When you come in, you get the feel of a cozy intimate dining environment already. There are two long tables and an open kitchen in front. The service was great as they took our jackets and offered a cocktail to start. Then we were told which table we would sit at. As we approached our table, the other diners were very friendly and introduced themselves. It felt like coming into someone's house for the holidays and everyone greets you and makes you feel at home. Meal starts with the cocktail hour where snacks were placed on the kitchen island and you can line up and grab what you want. I was a bit nervous with what our 4 year old could eat but she loved the snacks and ate it all happily. There was more than enough appetizers to go around. Some snacks included garlic shrimp, radicchio pancake-harissa aioli, steelhead trout omusubi, ricotta gnocchi. How are these snacks! More like appetizers that are just bite size. Also, a note that the drinks by the glass were very reasonably priced and they had local craft beers and cider as well. At the sit down portion of the meal, we had a sizeable starter with seared diver scallops (3 pieces), then braised beef short ribs with parsnip, and lastly a chocolate cake. We were stuffed! It was so much food for the price and they gave a generous portion even for our 4 year old. From a price point, this was so worth it and even more for the quality of the food and the service. One of the servers continued to come by and just check in our 4 year old to see how she was doing, if she needed orange juice, if she was able to eat the food, if she wanted more popcorn. Really loved the attention to service the folks here give to the diners. After a pretty crazy amount of recent press I decided it was time to visit this little VT restaurant and I am glad we made the trip because, to be honest, it was one of the top few meals I've ever had. While this dinner party-style spot seems to be located in a pretty random area, it is right next to Killington and on the way to Burlington from the south. As for the scene and food, I have to say it is all pretty wild, like falling in love with a person you have only just met but feel like you have known for a long time. The room consists of long communal tables and Emerson lights and bookshelves and wine racks. In terms of food, I don't even really understand how they are making money. They served us a clam toast with lovage, buttered ramp toast, sundried tomato and basil arancini, beef carpaccio, goat tartar (which was insane), and champagne BEFORE the meal. Keep in mind most of this stuff is actually foraged by the chef and all is local. Try not to go insane on this stuff like I did because you will not make it to dessert. First course was a pasta that had been made with foraged wild leek with crispy guanciale (pig cheek) and some insane local herb I couldn't even identify. It was amazing. Then a chicken dish (I am depressed I didn't snap a pic) that had actually been sous vide and then seared and served with a sweet butternut squash puree and buttered foraged chantrelle mushrooms. I distinctly remember eating it and thinking it was the best chicken dish I have had. Dessert was a play on an almond joy with this super dense and rich flourless chocolate cake garnished with roasted almonds and coconut shavings and served with this psychotic coconut ice cream. Through the meal it was fun talking now and then to the tony couple in front of us. Anyway, I am reading what I just wrote and I know it sounds kind of over the top and hyberpolic but I don't know what to say, this was one of the best meals I have ever had, it makes my eyes fill with tears to think of you reading this and not believing me. The Backroom is like my favorite grand-uncle: sophisticated, tasteful, warmly welcoming and unendingly memorable. The experience here is intimate: just 20 diners per seating (one seating Friday night and one Saturday night), in a rustic/sophisticated room behind the general store in the center of town. The kitchen is right there, as is the chef and his wife and their majordomo. From the welcoming class of champagne through the tightly curated mixed drink, beer and wine list and onto the hors d'oeuvre, a tone of gracious welcoming and down-to-earth quality is set. Dining is family style, 10 to a table (there are two arm chairs at each table; everyone else gets a nicely padded bench). The menu changes each weekend. When we ate, it was a deliciously tender pork roast, perfectly cooked pasta and delightfully light dessert. This is a great place for a special dinner - and a welcome relief from the ski town fare on the Killington access road just a few miles away. It's safe to say that I probably had one of the BEST meals I've ever had ANYWHERE at The Backroom, a tiny 20-seat restaurant, located in Pittsfield, VT. It's definitely worth the drive, no matter where you're staying in Vermont. The owners served us champagne and delicious cocktails to start along with a nice selection of local meats, cheeses, and dips while our dinner's were prepared right before our own eyes. First up, a beautiful butternut squash soup with pine nuts and a balsamic reduction drizzled on top. Next up, was the the most perfectly cooked piece of salmon I've ever had paired with fresh veggies and a unique blend of rice (which I can't recall but still crave). And for dessert we got to toast our own s'mores, but not the kind of s'mores I grew up with as a kid, these s'mores were served with delicious chocolates and homemade marshmallows. I would consider the Backroom to be a place for special occasions and group gatherings, they accommodated my group of 14 on a Monday night which was amazing. The price for dinner + drinks was roughly $45-$55 per person, which is not cheap, but I think most everyone in my group would agree they can't wait for the next special occasion to splurge at The Backroom... We had one of the best meals ever. There were 15 of us with 7 kids and we had such a good time. The vintage speaker connected to an iPod was a big hit. The hanging lights have a old world feel. The owners are wonderful , transplants from Queens, NY, my home town. We started off with champagne as well as cocktails. The chef cooks in front of you and put out food as he makes it. We started off with charcuterie and local cheeses-amazing. Then some sea urchin toast and duck liver pate-even more amazing and it melted in your mouth. I would have been happy with just that. The appetizers were rigatoncini and brussel sprouts, yum. The entrees were Skirt steak and cippolini with carrots with gnocchi. The dessert was chocolate cake with ice cream. The entire meal was flawless. The food was great but the conversation with the owners and the company was even better. The kids danced and entertained us. We took a lot food home. At the end we paid with our credit card on an iPad with Square! But be prepared to pay $60-80 per person and have 15-20 people in your party or two parties of 10ish each. It is soooo worth it. It was so good that my 13 year old daughter even wants to have her sweet sixteen here! We'll have to think about that one. It was a memorable night. read more

I visited the Back room back in March and I am STILL raving about this place. The food - utterly mind blowing- hands down. I made a reservation with the disclosure of having a gluten allergy - and everyone was entirely accommodating. Almost better than the food, (if you can believe it ) was the company. Family style dinners forces you to meet new and intriguing people, which ended up being the best part often night. The selfish side of me does not want to even rave about this place because I want to keep it a secret- but my heart wants to spread how freaking phenomenal this place is and I want to see it succeed for years to come! read more

This place certainly doesn't need my review. It's got plenty of fans, and my fantastic experience isn't going to make it any better than it already is, but I felt compelled to add my 2 cents because the food reviews don't appropriately describe the entire experience. My wife and I were looking for places to book for a 4 day stint in Vermont. The Backroom was in the area, but alas, it was booked - and it was booked for months. Evidently you need to plan well ahead if you want the Backroom experience. Thankfully I took the time to get on their wait list (through Yelp). We had booked another restaurant for the evening we wanted, (they only serve Friday through Sunday), but on the evening we arrived in Vermont, I got a text from Yelp saying there is a spot available for the night we wanted. Perfect timing - I immediately booked it before any other foodie beat me to it, and we were in! The place wasn't easy to find - it's literally a backroom behind a country general store. It's a converted old barn space, the ambiance is perfection. The pictures on Yelp and their site are exactly what you'll see, but they don't do the experience we had justice. The food was fresh prepared right in front of us, and was plentiful for the 24 diners who were part of the sitting. It felt like an impromptu cocktail party with 24 of the happiest strangers you've ever met, in the kitchen of an elite chef (who is also a Jersey boy). The food is different every sitting, so my explaining what dishes I had probably won't help you determine if this is the place for you - just know that they're flexible. If fish is on the menu, and you're not a fish eater, chef Kevin will whip up a similar dish using chicken (happened with one of my new friends sitting at my table). A nice touch was the fresh popcorn that Chef Kevin popped on the stove, touched with a light homemade butter and salt, and put on the tables as a post-dessert palate cleanser. The staff was awesome, constantly circulating to ensure everything was to our liking, and taking and filling drink orders. We walked out with a huge smile on our faces, some new friends, and a promise to come back next we're in Vermont (if we can get reservations). I almost hate to write this but feel I must to let people know what a true exquisite dining experience is like. The Backroom is a place I'd like to keep in my back pocket. Sort of analogous to my feelings for Mac products back in the early 1990s when most people thought the Apple had fallen too far from the tree. Backroom is the real deal. Ambiance, atmosphere, hospitality, new experience, shared dining with unique people and most of all caring attention to detail and spectacular food offered and cooked right in front of you by Kevin and Katie. They are ex patriots from NYC and no strangers to the hospitality industry. I feel privileged to be so close by and to have dined there in their first year three times. We enjoyed another amazing family meal at The Backroom. This year's Christmas celebration there featured a Feast of the Seven Fishes. Kevin and Katie are consummate hosts. Appetizers included shrimp scampi skewers, PEI mussels, fried calamari, brandade balls, smoked trout spread, followed by a first seated course of rigatoni with a lobster Bolognese. Some of our Vermont locals decided to start a neighborhood "supper club" - looking for unique places and memorable meals, especially restaurants that concentrate on local grown and native foods. In choosing the first location, the group did not hesitate to select the Backroom in Pittsfield. The owners, Kevin Lasko and Katie Stiles, were the volunteer chefs for a free local Community Meal, which fed 125 people and collected over $1300 in free will donations for the Bethel Food Shelf, which serves Bethel, Barnard, Stockbridge, and Pittsfield. One of the (many) motivations for going, en masse, to The Backroom, was to say thank you to the talented and community minded chefs! The Backroom did not disappoint - every item of every course, from the champagne and many unique appetizers, to the dessert - a baked alaska made with rhubarb pound cake and basil ice cream - was memorable and delicious. The suggested wines with each course were perfect! The setting was just right for our our group of about 20, with long rustic tables giving us a chance to visit while we raved about the food. This place is awesome! We were a group of 4 and drove about 45 minutes to get here. It's a very cosy and beautiful place- warm and both sophisticated and comfortable. I loved that you could chat with the chef during the cocktail hour- we had crispy artichokes with aioli and mini lobster rolls and prosecco to start. Dinner was a seafood boil that was incredibly tasty- the staff had a great drink they recommended (gin and spruce) that was awesome- sweet, with a little spice behind it- and a sprig of rosemary in it that just added to the senses. Dessert was a crepe cake with blueberry compote. There was no rush to depart and the mood among all attendees was light and contagious. We'll be back many,many times! read more

What a wonderful meal and dining experience. My husband and I went last night for our anniversary. The family style dining and seating made for an entertaining and fun night. the chef, Kevin, chatted with us while cooking while we sipped champagne hand delevered by his lovely wife/hostess/bartender. The food was seasonal, fresh and delicious. I especially enjoyed the asparagus ceasar salad, the new England clambake was a nice way to start Memorial Day weekend with really delicious baguettes. The blueberry crepe for dessert was simple but perfectly executed. The restaurant is literally the backroom of a country store with simple but elegant decor and Kevin and Katie make you feel that you are att an exclusive dinner party that they are hosting, not a restaurant. We can't wait to bring our ski house there during the season, but will make sure to book far in advance as this place is going to be jammed once word gets out. maybe I shouldn't be sharing? read more
