Precious few lunch places open for lunch on Tuesday in Middlebury so I took a chance on Morgan's. Service was courteous if not terribly attentive. I was asked if I had a reservation (as were others and a few did) but there were plenty of open tables. My Tom Collins was watery. The French onion soup tasted burnt although its pesto crostini was fairly tasty. The menu online has a croque monsieur listed, so I had my heart set on that. But it was apparently not up to date. I ordered the chicken and fig sandwich instead. The chicken was incredibly dry. The ciabatta stale. The fig spread way too thick and pasty. I ate less than half the sandwich. The onion rings were okay and I was appreciative they were able to provide a truffle aioli for them. Ambiance is charming and semi historic. It's a nice setting on the green, too bad the food was so forgettable. read more

Arrived without a reservation, the host offered a seat inside. After a few minutes our server showed up at our table, and said 'what'll you have'... skipping the niceties...... we ordered onion soup, a burger and a Reuben. 45 minutes later our waitress Terri called out to us From across the dining room...'have you gotten your food yet?' When we said no, she simply 'we'll what did you have? I guess I didn't put it in' when she asked us to repeat our order, we said we'd settle up for the beer and iced tea, which she charged us for and didn't offer even the remotest of apologies. .... Our server, Samantha was amazing, polite and prompt. I will even say she was extremely kind. Our food was great, satisfying and tasty. My husband and I are a combination of carnivore and vegetarian, so it's nice to be able to say that we were both happy with our choices. The atmosphere was just right, companionable, clean and quiet. The only caveat I would give is: be sure to check the price on your cocktail if you order one; the drinks can vary TREMENDOUSLY in price depending on the brand of spirits you order! read more

Great spot for lunch! Restaurant is in the Middlebury Inn on the Green so it can be hard to find if you're not familiar with the Inn. I've tried everything on the lunch menu and it is all so delicious!! Fried chicken sandwich probably my favorite but you can't go wrong with anything you choose. The french fries and onion rings are so good! They also make great bloody Marys and brunch cocktails. We love sitting on the patio on a nice day and watching the cars navigate around the famous midd green traffic circle. read more

I had lunch and ordered the Waldorf chicken salad. I wish i took a picture so I could try to copy and make at home. The chicken salad was a large portion with a side of greens lightly dressed in oil and vinegar along with some toasted sourdough with a yummy garlicky taste. Definitely ordering again! read more

We have waited awhile to visit Morgan's Tavern since moving to Middlebury. What a disappointment! We came for Valentine's Day. The tavern is cold an unappealing. Felt like I was in the lobby. The menu was fixed with a few choices. The beef barley soup was bland and tasteless. The grilled romaine could have been grilled more. The rib eye steak was delicious! First time, I am hungry after main course! The bar was very limited. The dessert followed suit. Blah. It is cold, my toes are freezing, in fairness it is -2 outside. WOULD we come back? Went here for lunch during our stay at the Middlebury Inn. The inn and restaurant is beautiful - very Victorian style inside. While that's sometimes not what people are into, if you are, you'll love this place! Sometimes I can take or leave that but I knew what I was getting into. (In response to some reviews here saying it was old and uninviting.) The food was great - I had the French dip with a bowl of New England chowder. My boyfriend had the same. We came here for New Years Eve dinner and we had a 8.30pm reservation (only 2 choices, 6 or 8). They were out of several items on the menu and several desserts. The food was mediocre at best. My fiancé ordered the beef crostini as an appetizer: they were supposed to come with caramelized onions and horseradish cream. They came on reheated frozen baguette slices and were extremely bland. No taste at all. I ordered the VT chèvre plate and that was supposed to come with sourdough. It had the same terrible bread with it. I had to ask for the bread basket that we did not get to eat some of it because the frozen bread was so bad. The main courses were good: homemade pasta was good but sauce bland. I had the flounder and the beurre blanc was bland but fish good. We had ice cream for dessert and that was good. Wines were ok, not very good. Too bad we really wanted to like it. My husband and I had a wonderful meal last night at the restaurant in the Middlebury Inn. My friend had suggested we try it. I drive by every day and never realized it was there. Checked on the website and saw they had a Tuna app which I'm a sucker for and it was as good as I've ever had - with some grilled romaine - mmmm... This is a review for the Mother's Day brunch at Morgan's Tavern at the Middlebury Inn. Five stars for several reasons: 1. We had a larger group and we never felt that we were being pushed out to make space for other diners. It was delightful to have such a leisurely brunch. 2. We had several kids under 12 in our group and they were made to feel welcome by all of the staff. 3. The food selection was wonderful and definitely not boring/typical buffet brunch fare ... though good "standards" were included such as an omelet station, carved meats, bacon, fresh fruit, etc. There were lots of fresh and flavorful salads and dishes to choose from. Even more simple dishes like mashed potatoes were good. Everyone at our table was raving about one dish or another. The corn and lobster salad was a hit with pretty much everyone. Beautiful seared Ahi tuna on top of a fresh potato salad with olives and green beans was my favorite. Dessert table was also a big hit with adults and children alike. 4. Huge selection of dishes that were gluten free. I had a chance to speak with the chef who was friendly and happy to point out that besides the obvious - quiche, french toast, etc. - everything was gluten free. Amazing! 5. Staff were all very friendly at Morgan's Tavern and the Inn. We hung around the inn for a little while after brunch and everyone we encountered was so nice. Note for nursing moms - there was a set of cozy chairs upstairs near the ladies room that was a perfect, quiet spot to feed my daughter when she became a little fussy after brunch. This was my first visit to the Middlebury Inn and Morgan's Tavern and I definitely plan to return soon. read more

I had dinner here this week for the first time. I have been there for breakfast and lunch before. Dinner was excellent and reasonably priced. Started with Strawberry soup for me (not on the dinner menu but the let me get it anyway). My sister got the Caesar salad and loved it. Then we both had the Cordon Bleu. It was very good and huge. The mashed potatoes (I had cheddar, my sister had caramelized onion) were excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. We also had breakfast each day here for 4 dates and loved it. The food was so good it was hard to choose what to get each morning. Great atmosphere, delicious, quality ingredients, and great service-what more can you ask for! read more

My family and I have recently moved to VT from CA (about a year and a half ago). Since we're new to the area, we are still exploring. My sister offered to take our daughter for an evening, so my wife and I decided to explore Middlebury, VT. We stayed at the Middlebury Inn and ate at the restaurant on site (Morgan's Tavern). For dinner, I ordered the onion and leek soup and beef&pork meatloaf. My wife had the roasted beet salad and the roasted curry chicken. Her salad was good, except it was ice cold, which is a little weird to me for roasted beet salad. My soup was done well with lots of cheese and a good amount of bread. I did find it extremely salty though...good advice for the chef: when adding a lot of cheese, it isn't so necessary to add salt to the soup. My wife's entree was good (taste-wise) to her, but I found it heavy on the coconut milk. But to be fair, coconut milk is not my favorite and I find it not good when I can taste it too much. We both found the chicken and risotto way over-cooked, but overall, she liked it. My meatloaf came out covered in gravy...or so they say. It is listed as "onion gravy" so I assumed the lumps in it were onions. Nope. Just lumps. Another note to the cook: don't add flour to the gravy once you have the liquid going. The meatloaf was way overdone as well and again...VERY salty. I couldn't even finish the meal. Our server brought out the dessert menu and my wife asked what I wanted. "Nothing, if it's cooked here" was my answer. She got the cheese maple apple pie. As soon as it came, I knew it was made on site...the pastry was bland and not good at all...the apples weren't quite done either. But hey...at least it wasn't overly salty! The service was good. The next morning, we braved breakfast (had a bit too much to drink the night before so we wanted to eat before walking around). We each had the traditional breakfast. They came out looking good. My eggs were perfectly cooked (over medium) and seasoned well. The sausage was good, as was the bacon (although a little under-cooked, so floppy, but we didn't specify we wanted it crispy). The potatoes were a bit under-cooked, and lo and behold, SALTY. I swear it's almost as if they get a discount on salt. Oh, and the service was LOUSY in the morning. Overall, I wouldn't even kind of recommend this place. Way over-priced for the cook's skill-set. If you keep a salt-lick next to your bed and enjoy it like most of us like water, then it may be for you. read more

This place has been a jewel waiting for the right owners and management to get it right with the restaurant as an alternative place to eat , cozy and personal, it's a good place for lunch or dinner, call to check hours Very reasonable $ too. read more

We ate here on the second night of our stay at the Middlebury Inn and for breakfast both mornings. I'm a vegan, and the staff was very accommodating to my requests. For breakfasts I had the oatmeal both mornings (I just made sure the waiter knew I couldn't have dairy). It was basic basic but good. My mom (who is not vegan) had the waffles which she said were very nice. When we ate there for dinner I had a salad for a starter and the vegetable stir fry for my entree. After asking the waitress if their was butter in the dish she asked me if I was vegetarian or vegan and when I said vegan she told me she was vegan too and would tell the chefs so the dish would be prepared without any animal products. The vegetables and rice were both nicely seasoned and flavorful. My mom had the fennel/onion soup as well as the shrimp and grits said both were delicious. Overall, the service was wonderful and the food was basic but good (at least for a vegan!). The only reason I docked a star was because the portions were a bit small for the price. read more

Some friends and I had lunch at the Morgan's Tavern last week, and I have to say it was such a great experience. The atmosphere is so relaxed, and the room just brought you back to a simpler time for that hour that you are there. Even when the lunch crowd started coming in, the servers kept everything going smoothly, never letting us feel neglected in any way. The lunch menu was filled with so many choices that is was hard to make a decision. I love how you can choose 1/2 sand. or 1/2 salad and add soup. It's just right amount for lunch. I also like the fact that alot of the food choices are locally grown or attained. The prices were surprisingly reasonable too. We will definitely be making this a regular stop for our lunch meetings. read more
