In northern Vermont, starry night is on a short list of best overall restaurants. Ive never had anything less than a great meal in 7 years of visiting. Highlights this time: The coal fired vegetables were smoky deliciousness. The peach sticky toffee dessert with vanilla ice cream was addicting. Notes: The ribeye entree can be shared among two non ravenous people (they offer different sizes - ask when you order). The peach toffee dessert is also a shareable size. We're locals. Drove by this place many a-time. Honestly ever thought it was a tourist coffee shop type thing. Then one day I was looking for a place for our anniversary dinner. As I dug in and looked at the Yelp! reviews, the Web site and menu, I was surprised. Using OpenTable I booked a reservation for us, and noted it was our anniversary. We got there and yeah the gravel lot and not-quite-strip-mall shopping area thing on the side of VT Route 7 (what we consider a major highway) was not on outward appearance what would be the correct "cover" to this "book". Trust me, it's worth it to crack this tome open. The inside is warm and cozy and offers a romantic atmosphere, but also can accommodate groups. Great views outside of woodsy tree filled spaces. The staff were amazing. They preemptively acknowledged our special occasion and were very attentive to every need. Just the right amount of checking in without hovering, but not absent enough to make us want for more. The food. Holy crap. The food. OMG. It's all very fresh and as local as can be. The grill bread is great as an appetizer, and I learned what vadouvan oil was. The picanha for two was absolute perfection, cooked just right, tender and flavorful. A truly stellar meal! (No pun intended.) Starry Night Cafe is nice dining without feeling pretentious. It's cozy, warm, and oh so delicious. We were seated in the greenhouse area right by a window with a view out into the garden. For drinks, we ordered the Long Goodbye cocktail and a glass of red wine, which we enjoyed with the complimentary fry bread. For our appetizer, we ordered the smoked swordfish arancini, which tasted great with a squeeze of lemon. A hearty, unique take on fried rice balls! As our entree, we split the Dry Aged NY Strip, which came atop greens and mushrooms, along with a side of broccolini (a special from the garden that day). The steak was DELECTABLE and a perfect portion for two to share. The broccolini was perfectly roasted and just delghtful. We ended up taking leftover steak home, but that didn't mean we could pass up dessert! We went with the Gianduja pots de creme which, in addition to being beautiful, was creamy and decadent. Our favorite spot! We come here at least once a month for a few reasons. First off, the service. Every member of the staff is professional, personable, and great at their jobs. Second, the food is incredible. We love the coal roasted oysters, the peanut ginger salad and the rotation of entrees they make depending on the week/month. Recently I had the Korean BBQ wings and WOW!!! I may be a slightly biased because of my personal attachment to Starry Night but no joke, might be the best ribs I've ever had. The quantity of food was nuts, we had left overs for days! She got the Salmon which was prepared perfectly and came with Quinoa which was delicious. Perfect with the generous serving of crackers that came with. Wood Grilled Prime Picanha - served as part of a platter for two, the sliced picanha was PERFECTLY rare with medium rare ends. Black garlic, grated horseradish, flaky salt & cracked pepper to use as we wish. 2 huge twice-baked potatoes & a small salad w/a dilly housemade ranch made this perfect. A must order! Strawberry Bavarian - layers of yummy mousse, fresh cream, strawberries, & house made graham crackers made this a heavenly dessert Coconut caramel ice cream - soooo rich & creamy, this (vegan!) scoop was memorable. Made with coconut caramel & coconut cream, so good! I rarely give up 5 but we were blown away at our meal at @starrynightcafe in Vermont this weekend! We returned to this property from our last visit before the lockdown. We were greeted and placed at our table in the newly renovated side room next to the fireplace without delay. Chefs Smith & Haskel ( who were new to us ) simply crushed every cover that was offered along with some great wine pairings from the house SOM. Our side room was pleasantly lit , warm and sound proofing was well thought out! Our server April was fun, attentive, knowledgeable and professional! April allowed us to course out the entire meal which was a pleasant surprise for the first seating on a Saturday night!! Now for the food: our Kusshi oysters from Vancouver were super fresh, delicate and briny along with the house yuzo citrus version of their mignonette was so good we simply could not resist adding another course of oysters to our meal. This was paired with a beautiful cremant rosé. The beef saturated popovers were crunchy and super flavorful. We could of used a dipping sauce since the popover on its own was was a bit dry but the flavor made up for that. Our deconstructed steak tartare with Shiso leaves was visually pleasing but a total flavor bomb! Chef Smith instructed us to wrap the tartare into the shiso leaves to experience the added flavor profile of spicy cumin and it did not disappoint!! We went with the nights special of WOOD GRILLED PRIME PICANHA FOR TWO butternut purée * black garlic steak sauce * horseradish dressed greens. This was the star of the show. Cooked perfectly melt in your mouth prime cut that had a beautiful char that complimented the umami black miso garlic steak sauce to perfection. The butternut purée had an extraordinary velveteen mouth fell that kept begging us to take more. Along with its crisp side salad and Malden salts, crushed peppers this cover was incredibly well balanced. We paired the steak with a bold cab that was offered by our SOM which I forgot to write down but it was the perfect choice. We finished our meal with a lovely oil cake with vanilla bean mascarpone And a perfectly pulled cappuccino that rounded out our night! @starrynightcafevt is a gem and with its newly renovated anti rooms is a property that must be experienced! Genuinely and truly, five stars feels like a robbery for this place. I've been dining here every summer for 10+ years, through 10+ menus, and have never not been blown away by the food, service, and atmosphere. This will be a novel, so bear with me (TLDR at the end): I always worry when I eat at restaurants with high-quality, artisanal menus because I never know if I'll like the flavor combinations described, and now that my husband and I have a five year old dining with us, I fear his behavior and the reaction to it in more austere environments. Yesterday, we had two reservations: One for father's day brunch, and one for our anniversary dinner. The menu for brunch was limited, as always, to expertly crafted dishes; I ordered biscuits and sausage, which came with home fries and eggs, and my husband ordered the French omelette with bacon and toast. Staff was attentive, offering the wifi password and a coloring page and pencils for our son - unprompted and so appreciated - and our meals were just beyond words delicious. I had to bring our son to the car shortly after brunch was brought, and nobody so much as batted an eye at his tantrum. It's not common to feel unjudged when your kid is throwing a fit, but something about the kindness and warmth of this place and its people provided me a bit of much-needed comfort. Husband finished his meal in peace and brought the rest of my plate to-go (it reheats just as well!) and I canceled our dinner reservation to avoid bothering other diners. Instead, we called in an order for two different pasta dishes and dined at the cottage in our pajamas - a necessary adjustment, and no less heavenly due in large part to a spinach lumache with pork ragu and a spinach mafaldine and zucchini dish. Thank you, Starry Night, for cementing yourself as my forever favorite restaurant. But the prices were shockingly high, and only two entrees were listed (swordfish at $43, steak for two at $110), along with a couple of pasta dishes ($30+). There were many appetizers offered but all over $20. I agree with the previous review that said this place has turned into a "Nu-Vermont" restaurant, obviously catering to the ultra-rich without really caring if regular people can afford to come here. The food was good, but certainly not extraordinary. I have had better meals in New York City for less. The picanha steak, which is generally said to be sublime, had a good flavor but was rather chewy. Change is good right? Right? So myself and our party of 6 recently dined at Starry Night. It had been a few years since going there and I was looking forward to the slightly upscale, VT farmy food I've grown to expect from them. Big mistake. Apparently Starry Night has changed so much in the past few years that it technically should be renamed as it's not the same resto you once knew and loved. In essence Starry Night is now what I call 'Nu-Vermont'. 'Nu-Vermont' is something that has emerged over the past 4-5 years since we were all locked up and the world went nuts. It's a VT where to participate you must drive a 50k electric vehicle, can afford 500k for a condo, are OK paying $15 bucks for 2 pancakes at the local sugarhouse and don't balk at paying 30 dollars for a plate of pasta at a local resto....and Starry Night has gone FULL NU-VT. The first indication that things have changed was when we entered the resto. The staff was friendly and welcoming but gone is the cool rustic vibe of the entry dining room. The old wooden bar and the cozy seats have been replaced by a new hip marble bar area and fewer seats. After being escorted to our seats is when we got the real shocker. We were handed a one page 'Summer Menu'. On the left were apps that averaged 20-25$ (for apps!). On the left of the menu were 2 salads, 3 pasta dishes that averaged about 30+ bucks (for pasta...really?) and last the true kicker that shows this is a NU-VT resto...a mere 2 'entrees'. One a $45 salmon dish and the other a whopping $110 steak dish. At least I think it was a steak dish. It's called 'Zabuton'. I think that's a meditation pillow. But it came with steak sauce. So just guessing it's a steak. Or maybe it's a whole cow. Cus it's $110 bucks. Or maybe it is a meditation pillow and it's cooked really well. Wow. Talk about sticker shock. Anyway, my party was shocked and a few only got salads and others got an app and pasta and one got the $45 dollar salmon. All the food was tasty though the pasta and Salmon portions were not that big. A few also got desert and those weren't bad either. So overall the service was OK for a ultra high end resto (which Starry Night has become), but not exceptional. The food was tasty but not exceptional. The ambiance is nice but the prices are truly sky-high which really is kinda sad cause the original Starry Night was a fun, cute little place without pretension. Not so now. We don't plan on returning anytime soon and I do wish them all the best. Last thought. Yelp lists this place at 3 dollar signs. It should be changed to 4. read more

Way overpriced. The food isn't bad per se, but at these prices I want to actually feel excited to keep eating. If I'm paying $41 for seafood risotto it should have a lot more flavor and the squid (which was the most abundant seafood in the dish) shouldn't be chewy. The duck duo was fine but presentation was lacking and, again, it just wasn't worth the price. We've had better duck for less. Complimentary ciabatta rolls were forgettable and there was only one per person. The high point of the meal was the beet tartare appetizer which was creative, well-presented, and tasty--too bad the rest of the dishes didn't meet the bar it set. Our orders were taken fairly timely, and our first course was served soon after we ordered. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. After waiting over an hour for our main courses, three of the entrees were brought and my pasta dish was "still being finished up". No apologies were offered and my dish finally arrived 5 minutes later. It was ridiculous. The initial waiting was bad enough, but to not bring all 4 entrees together is unacceptable for a nicer restaurant that charges the prices they charge. The food quality was fine, but nothing exceptional and by the time we finally got our meals, we were annoyed and ready to leave. We had a very disappointing dinner at the Starry Night Cafe last night. We had been there a few times before and really liked this restaurant. Based on our previous experiences, I had recommended this restaurant to many people. Now I regret that. Last night we had limited selections from a prix fixe menu for The Holidays. The portions were even smaller than usual and while the food was ok, it did not come close to blowing us away the way it has in the past. (When you are only preparing a limited number of selections, shouldn't they be better than normal, not worse?) But what stands out for us, and will probably result in our not going back, was the poor service. Sheryl was our server, and her way of dealing with any issues was to avoid us (and even pretend not to hear us calling her). She never brought some of the items we ordered and even brought two courses at the same time. Yes, there were two full plates put in front of me at the same time. When I tried to question how I could eat two dishes at the same time, Sheryl turned and walked away as I was speaking, and stayed away from our table for at least 10 minutes. Also, the desert was very different than what was described on the menu (whipped cream is not the same as vanilla ice cream!). There were only three desserts on the menu. Come on - it shouldn't be too hard to describe them accurately! They tried to explain away all of the errors by pointing out that they had just reopened due to renovations. I don't accept that. Having put anniversary as a reason for the reservation it was very pleasant to have the server Leslie congratulate us when we sat down. Menu and all items were fantastic with some being unique. Complementary fried bread was delicious. I had a drink which contained gin, a poblano liquor and had basil oil floating on top. Quite tangy and delicious. Starter was Hot & Sour egg drop soup and for main course I had the Duck Leg. I do not remember wha tmy wife had (My bad after 38 years). We will go back soon to try more on the menu. During their Father's Day brunch we made a reservation easily online a week prior, and found the online menu appetizing with a nice variety. However upon arriving at the restaurant the menu had been changed and at least two entree/brunch options were changed, the ones I had been hoping for an eggs Benedict and French toast option. When we inquired we were told that wasn't being served and apologized for the change but offered no solution. The only other options we ordered were a sausage gravy biscuit and a salmon with eggs. The salmon didn't come with the hollandaise sauce it mentioned and I had to ask (as did another diner) who also had wanted the eggs Benedict. We got two mimosas and the eggs were also overdone, over medium and over easy were not as expected, also overdone. The waitress gave some attention but did not want to ask about another mimosa.. and for the price, plus a tip. Was not worth the trip. I hadn't been to Starry Night for three years. Hard to believe. I knew it switched owners about a year ago and wasn't sure if that had affected the quality, although I knew that the manager and chef had agreed to stay with the restaurant so the calibre of food most likely hadn't changed. This is the favorite restaurant of many of my girlfriends. I've always enjoyed the food, but for some reason in the past the restaurant never clicked for me 100%. Although it's a beautiful place on the inside in the main dining area, the noise level can be quite high when it's packed. The views once you're inside are very nice though the location at the side of Route 7 in a sort of strange shopping area is a bit odd. I believe the difference between 5-star and 4-star restaurants (on Yelp) is heavily subjective and has a lot to do with expectations, nostalgia and other personal factors. You can go on Yelp and love something someone else isn't that psyched about and only like what others love. The quality of the ingredients at Starry Night is very high. Local when possible. Fresh. In my experience, the chef goes light on sauces and heavier on marinades to achieve flavors. Also he's more of a broth over sauce guy. Last night my halibut was very nicely done. The paella underneath mild, pleasant flavor. The extra "oomph" was on an oil/hot drizzle that circled the plate. My boyfriend had the mixed grill with local meats. The beef tasted as if it were marinated in lime and tequila (probably not tequila but that's how I remember it). The flavor was nice. Not perfect for me, but I recognized the quality. He enjoyed it very much. The meal was filling and felt healthy and balanced at the same time. Our calamari starter was fresh and the calamari was not overdone. I haven't had such good calamari for a while. It's hard to get great calamari in VT. Our server was a model in courtesy and efficiency. Very nice guy from Chile. The servers at Starry Night are always great. In summary, great local high-quality food that's healthy over heavy. Richness achieved with broths and marinades, not heavy sauces (in general).
