The owner of Au Comptoir purchased the Elm St building housing the Prince and Pauper restaurant - terminated their lease and kicked them out. Prince and the Pauper was 50 plus years old, a classic Woodstock institution where wonderful staff treated customers like family - it was a beautiful restaurant. So many great memories created for so many people. New owners gutted both the employees and the restaurant, razing the historic woodwork down to the studs. They should be ashamed, but I'm sure they are not. read more

Came in For a drink and snacks. Ordered the Mediterranean trio, which included chips, olive es, and nuts. It was perfect t for snacking. Ordered the lumberjack and the Emerald kiss. Both were tasty drinks. Our server was bomb, very friendly. The place is hip and a bit loud but that is expected for a drink stop. Everything was great here. The host or manager not sure who he is, is very rude in his delivery of the "rules" of the place such as sit as close together to other people as possible to make space. I even heard him going after a couple that walked and said YOU CANT SIT THERE and they informed him the other guy had told them to walk in and where to sit to which he responded "oh ok, sorry I have to be aggressive but we're just running the place a little different today" Bartender helping us also one word answers not very interested in being friendly. The good: The cocktails were excellent -- definitely on the pricey side, but worth it. The ambiance was also great and made for a nice setting. The bad: As we walked up, the couple in front of us accidentally missed the "Please Wait to be Seated" sign and started to walk in. The host immediately and very rudely scolded them, telling them to wait at the sign. It wasn't what he said, but how he said it -- unnecessarily harsh and condescending. It honestly made me want to turn around and leave right then. No one wants to be greeted like that, and judging by other reviews, this isn't an isolated incident. I found this spot on Instagram and was able to visit on my most recent trip to the East Coast. The space is absolutely gorgeous, and their seasonal cocktail menu was so perfect for fall in Vermont. They have firepits outside, and blankets available upon request, and I am still thinking about the yuzu marmalade that came on our build-your-own charcuterie board. We stayed for a couple of drinks and then walked around the cute downtown, and I would recommend both. 10/10 for Au Comptoir and 10/10 for Woodstock, VT! read more

Each cheese & meat for charcuterie was priced separately (understand for choice) but OUTRAGEOUSLY priced ($13-$15 per piece of cheese/4pieces of prosciutto) . To top it off , the server was not personable almost seemed annoyed we were there .Half way thru our visit a lovely lady with long blonde hair came over to greet & welcome us .... I thought she must be owner& she was . My suggestion to future guests , save $200( that's what we paid for 1 bottle of wine & small bites ) go to the market down the street , buy some cheese , crackers ,olives, wine & pull up a chair at visitor center . This little gem of a place was the most lovely experience we had while in NH and Vermont. It was right up our alley in terms of ambiance, cocktails, and quality of "snacks". And the fact that they are open on Sundays was a huge deal because that was the only day we were in Woodstock. The owner Zoe and bartender Nick were such great hosts! We sat at the bar for 3 hours! We had wine, then the Ginger Margarita and an Old Fashioned. We also ordered a cheese and Salumi board that was wonderful and very reasonably priced. I tried to come here for a drink this weekend with 3 friends. It's super cute and the menu looked great. Entering, the bearded bartender announced they were short staffed but would be with us as quickly as they could. FORTY minutes later, we were still waiting patiently while trying to get the bartenders attention, without him or either of the other workers acknowledging us again. He repeatedly took orders from older men who had just walked in even as we were clearly standing directly next to the bar trying to order. As we are 25 year old women this felt related, not to mention demeaning. After this happened 3 or 4 times and it started to seem like something more than simple absent-mindedness or chaos, we decided to cut our losses and leave. We walked to the Woodstock Inn where a bar of the same size and busyness was somehow handled fine with 3 bartenders and we were greeted and served nearly immediately. Leaving a star because it did look really cute and I hate to judge an establishment for being short staffed. However I truly am a believer in communication and I wonder whether perhaps they might have considered removing some food aspects of their menu if they were so short staffed instead of leaving their patrons with a terrible experience. We also never received an apology or acknowledgement from any of the staff, even as we walked out directly past the main bartender (he'd come out from behind the bar to show an older man a golf umbrella? Instead of serving customers who'd been waiting 40 minutes?). read more

Love love love! I came when they first opened for the day so it wasn't busy but did start to fill up fast. I loved everything about this place from the decor to the ambiance, cocktails, and bites. The only negative I had was of the tall female server being less than nice. I was visiting the area and asked her where the best place to get fresh produce was and she made a snarky remark to me about the flooding. I am well aware of the flooding and still feel terrible about what happened but it was rude for no reason and didn't even answer my question. I felt like she maybe just had an issue with me being a "tourist" but who knows. Thank you to the bartender who must have overhead her and asked what we were looking for. She was very sweet.
