My parents and I were impressed with the quality of ingredients and spot-on cooking. The bouillabaisse was in a very tasty but not too salty soup base and the beef tenderloin was great (we ordered rare). The service was attentive and kind, and we enjoyed all the dishes including the tagliatelle which also has wagyu beef. Tourterelle outside of Middlebury Vermont is located in a charming farmhouse featuring french technique and locally sourced VT ingredients. We went for dinner and had the venison arancini with roasted garlic chevre which was perfectly gamey and complemented by the tang of the goat cheese. For entrees we had the steak frites with baby greens salad and fries, Faroe Island salmon served over okinowan sweet potato and black garlic asparagus, and tagliatelle with Brisson Dona Farm Wagyu beef and roasted mushrooms. The food was incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked. Dessert was an equally impressive chocolate lava cake with berry coulis, whipped cream, and cocoa nibs. This restaurant is at the top of its game. The food (tagliatelle and vegetable croquettes) was beyond excellent. (A+) The wait time was negligible. (A+) We felt seen and heard. (A+) I was craving a hot cocktail (it was a freezing night.) Since there were none on the menu, I tentatively asked the server if it was possible to bring me a cup of tea and a side of bourbon. When she returned, I was floored. She brought an array of 3 identical little glasses of bourbon, honey and lemon juice along with a mug of hot water and a selection of tea bags. I was beyond happy; it was a "mix your own hot toddy, just for me." (A++) I noticed a two star review dated the same night as our experience. (Valentines Day.) We usually don't expect much on Valentines since restaurants are inundated, but our experience was first class. We had an uneven experience at Tourterelle. We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and the table wasn't ready. No worries, we were early after all. We were invited to wait at the bar but opted to wait in the foyer as we were told it would only be a few minutes. Three other tables arrived during that time, two of which were quite early for their reservations. They seemed to know the owner as both groups conversed familiarly with her. The two four tops were seated rather quickly after the owner offered to buy them a drink if they had to wait (no such offer was made to us). That left us and another two top still waiting to be seated. It was about 15 minutes at that point so we reluctantly moved to the bar. The owner did stop by to apologize for the wait. When we were seated, we were taken to a back room that was uncomfortably warm. The owner even commented on how warm it was when she sat us and suggested that if it gets too hot, we open the sliding glass door next to our table. So we sat for about 30 minutes receiving mediocre service from a harried waitress. She brought the wrong wine to the table next to ours, asked to take my drink cup and grabbed the one I was still drinking rather than the empty one. It was really hot in the room by this point. A man at the corner table commented how warm it was. A woman at another table put up her hair to get it off her neck. A third man was visibly sweating. And we were both super hot, so ... we opened the door. After a few minutes the table in the center of the room started complaining so I asked one of the women if she was cold, trying to be considerate and willing to compromise. When a man at her table yelled at me that I was the only one who was hot and I needed to close the door. He did not ask nicely. I meekly protested that I wasn't sure that was true because I'd observed others who were also hot and he just yelled more emphatically. It was super uncomfortable. But we closed the door to only a crack. I felt awkward the entire rest of the time. When we got up to leave, I moved to close the door entirely and my husband told me to leave it and make them do it. Which felt horrible, of course, but I left it. I'm sure that table muttered horrible things about us as we left. As for the food, the bread was delicious but be aware that asking for more will set you back $7. The salad starter was fine, not much to it. I ordered the tagliatelle ragout based on the server's enthusiastic suggestion and it was merely fine. Not boldly flavored or exciting in any way. But my husband lived his steak frites and thought the tomato confit was delectable. His best meal of the trip. And ... we were served a scoop of house black currant gelato to apologize for our wait, which was a nice gesture. Although after we placed our order, we never saw our original server again. read more

This was our second dinner at this restaurant. the first visit was a couple of years ago and it was honestly not that good at the time. my wife and I like to give a restaurant a second try before passing judgement so tonight was our second. it was very lackluster. It is very expensive for what you get. We were served our food promptly. There are definitely better restaurants in the area as far as quality of food. We were never offered a second glass of wine and had to wait a considerable amount of time for our first. the value is just not there $45 for a chicken entree is pretty steep for a dish that was just ok. the dessert was lacking flavor and was dry. the atmosphere in the restaurant was good and is seemed clean minus some cobwebs that were on the light fixtures. All in all we live locally and will likely not return to Tourterelle unless it is for an event and we have no other option. you can definitely get a much better meal for half the price elsewhere. read more

After a complete renovation, Tourterelle is open again. While the previous decor reminded me of a French country home, the new place is sleek and modern. It could just as easily be a NY or SF restaurant as a VT one. And the food holds up to the best restaurants on either coast too. The chef, Bill has clearly spent his COVID time perfecting his recipes and it shows. You literally cannot go wrong on this menu - every app and entree is delicious. Remember to save some space for dessert though. You won't regret it. Amazing food! We went for Easter brunch and we plan to return to New Haven, even though we live close to St. Albans. I ordered the salad with pickled apples (yum), greens, pistachios and green goddess dressing. The salad was very fresh and innovative with the pickled fruit and the retro dressing. I also had the roasted lamb with creamy mashed potato. It was a lovely tender Easter treat. I love roasted lamb and it's hard to find it done in a restaurant as well as this was. My husband had the salmon with polenta and the creamy tomato soup which he couldn't stop raving about. We finished sharing a piece of pistachio cake with home made ice-cream. Especially after my surprisingly great experience at the top of a remote mountain, I would've thought that this bustling French inn and restaurant was going to blow me away. Alas, my expectations were too high. We were a large group eating brunch on Sunday; we had made reservations ahead of time so when we showed up we were escorted right to our table. The brunch menu is unimaginative, all basic variations on eggs: omelettes, crepes, frittatas, etc. but no unique combinations or ingredients. Several of the party ordered the one thing that sounded interesting, the burrito crepe but it was pretty much an omelette wrapped in a crepe. I had the sausage frittata which had seasonal vegetables in it. It was meh; it could really have used some fresh herbs - tarragon, thyme, rosemary, to kick the flavors up. There were pancakes and french toast on the menu, but when they were brought out, I was aghast at the portion size. Two pancakes the size of my fist, with a sprinkling of apples? We had to ask for maple syrup. The service was spotty. Right after taking our drink orders, I saw that our waitress packed up and left, apparently done for the day. Another waitress came out and asked again about our drinks; we told her we had already ordered. We ordered food; a different waitress brought it out and handed the wrong plates to the wrong people. Because of the aforementioned similarity among all the food items, it was hard to tell whose was whose until the waitress returned with the rest of the plates and could identify the plates. It's a cute place, and maybe it's better for different meals, or when you stay there and can eat whenever you like. Compared to other experiences, it wasn't worth it. But the tea was very tasty. read more

After hearing rave reviews about this unique French restaurant, we set our expectations high. Unfortunately, the restaurant failed to deliver and we left feeling moderately satisfied. I will begin by saying that the atmosphere is quiet and intimate, the menu sounds delectable with an interesting twist on classic French fair. The service was just ok, our waitress was young and seemed a bit unsure of herself. We began the meal with a nice, crisp bottle of Pinot Noir which was very good for the price. The wine was likely the best part of the meal as the food when downhill from there. Being gluten and dairy free makes it difficult eating out, but I have found that many restaurants in the VT area are quite accommodating and more than happy to whip something up for me that may or may not be featured on the menu. This was not the case here, they had very limited options (no gluten free starches existed on the entire menu and there was not even the slightest inclination that the chef would be willing to make something special). Ok, now onto the food: For a table of four we split two crepes and three Tourterelle salads. The crepes were good, one sweet and one savory, but the salads left much to be desired. As advertised on the menu it features artichoke hearts, toasted pecans, dried cranberries and goat cheese (which I sadly had to pass on). When the salads came out there were no cranberries on any of them, but rather it feature dried currents (smaller raisins, ew!) and we were never alerted to the change. Not a good idea for people with food allergies or for people who LOVE cranberries on their salads! Our entrees were fine, we had their house BBQ which was good. The pork was cooked well but lacked the umph I was hoping for, and the wild mushroom raviolis were very actually tasty. All in all, it was an enjoyable meal but not because of the food. The atmosphere and people made the evening and I don't think I will be heading back there anytime soon. I would advise looking for alternatives if you want to eat underwhelming, overpriced French food. read more

For a special occasion, we are at Tourterelle last night, and it was some treat! I had a mango mixed drink that was out of this world! I have had drinks on other visits, and they are always something special! Not wanting a heavy meal, I had the crepe, and it was so well prepared, I was in heaven from the first bite! My mom had a wonderful salad that left her full, happy and healthy. My husband's bouillabaisse was also wonderful. The waitresses were helpful and friendly, and the owner, a very sweet woman from France (I don't remember her name, sorry!) greeted us and chatted with us, and made us feel quite welcome! We have been here a few times, and it's become my favorite place for special dates! I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! read more

Each time when I have placed my order and reported I have food allergies I have been asked if they are "real allergies." My only goal was to have the waitress communicate my food allergies to the chief, by the wait staff's response and the food I received, I am not sure if that was done. read more

We eat at Tourterelle often - the food is great and the hospitality equally wonderful. The decor is relaxing and intimate - I love the fireplace in the main dining room and wide pine floors. We often sit at the small bar off the lobby, where the staff are gracious and professional, but very friendly. Seasonal cocktail specials are unique, such as a sour cherry martini with housemade infused vodka from cherries grown on site. Favorites include the escargot appetizer, grilled mozzarella salad, and in the springtime be sure to look for the asparagus appetizer. Bouillabaisse is a great standby - always on the menu - but specials often include a local filet mignon or other steak that is always wonderful, especially with green beans and local potatoes done various ways. For lighter appetites, several savory crepes paired with a small salad are a nice option, as are the burger and mussels. read more

Christine knows how to plan and execute a wedding with style, grace and ease. She is confident, which puts one at ease and very easy to communicate with. We planned our daughter's wedding from afar, and it came together perfectly. The venue itself is idyllic: the grounds beautiful, the barn romantic and charming, and the inn gorgeous. Much of the planning you think you need to do, is already in place at Tourterelle, under Christine's and her team's management. So the little things such as tables, chairs, barrels, linens, place settings, vases, lighting, etc., are already accounted for in the plan. So nice! We loved the signature cocktail, the hors d'oeuvres passed on lovely trays, the food, the coffee service, and the bar choices and service! The staff really makes it easy to enjoy the evening. We stayed on site, which made it easy to get ready, and got to know Truffle the dog. We even came back the following day for a delicious Sunday BBQ - which was in the freshly redecorated barn. **despite a horrible and sudden forecast change to rain and hail, the weather was fine and everything worked out beautifully - an 11 on a scale of 10. We even got a rainbow! Christine said the day would be beautiful, despite the weather, and she was soooo right. Merci to the whole team at Tourterelle! We will be back to visit! We've eaten here twice. Location is nice. Staff and ambience also pretty good (though the caned chairs are particularly uncomfortable). The food, though, is underwhelming at best. It is bland, greasy and not well cooked. Our group ordered the pork on both occasions and it was dry as a bone on both occasions and basically tasteless. Steak was a middling cut and not cooked to the requested temperature. Scallops themselves were perfectly cooked on the other hand, but the rest of the scallop dish was uninspired, bland and very greasy, wrapped in a crepe and drowned in some kind of brownish sauce. for the money, our local pub is about 4x better in food quality, presentation and taste. The service was impeccable and the place beautiful, with just the right level of noise and temperature. But I'm afraid I can't honestly give the food a great rating. My pasta with ragu was skimpy and salty; and my crème brulee was just on the wrong side of burnt. My husband ordered trout, listed as "a la meuniere", which to me means filets dredged in flour. That is its primary meaning (I looked this up), but it can also refer to just the sauce traditionally served with fish meuniere. In this case, the waitress explained (after the fact) that they really meant just the sauce; the trout came served as a whole fish, for which we were unprepared. It really should have been noted as such on the menu. Long since done with my tiny portion of ragu, I had to sit for a further 20 minutes watching my husband dissect every bite of fish before eating, looking for bones. We also had a salad and a plate of pates and salami, all of which were unremarkable; but the nutella ice cream was a hit; and we had a nice bottle of local wine. Prices high. read more

Given the beautifully remodeled interior and the delicious-sounding menu, we expected much more. Our appetizers were both bland and uninteresting. We had a French-style spring roll that sounded amazing on the menu -- crab, shrimp, avocado, micro greens, wasabi-based sauce, all wrapped up in a crepe. What we got was so bland that other than the sweetness of the crab there was almost no flavor at all. We ordered a calamari salad that was similarly uninteresting. Little flavor, and overcooked calamari. For our entree, we were about to order what our waitress said was one of the best dishes on the menu (French-style BBQ) when the table next to us chimed in and told us that it was not a good choice (one of the sausages was described as indistinguishable from an oscar-myer wiener). So, we went for the other "best dish", the bouillabaisse. The red curry sauce was exquisite, but the large dollop of aioli was unnecessary and overpowering. The shrimp and scallops were overcooked. We could tell that they were using good ingredients, and they are members of the VT Fresh Network, but they have failed in execution. The drinks were great. Our waitress recommended a good wine, and their Perfect Manhattan was indeed close to perfect. There were many creative and interesting cocktails that we would like to try. If I lived next door, I would likely frequent the place for drinks, as the atmosphere is incredible and the drinks are delicious. However, we will not be back for the food, and we will not be driving from Burlington just for drinks. read more

Made reservation for a Friday evening and mentioned it's a birthday dinner and that we would like to have a quiet table. Got a table right between bar and dining room with non-stop traffic. Unfortunately, returned from restroom when I joined the table, otherwise would have insisted in getting more comfortable placement. Food was cold except one dish. Two rabbit dishes had to be sent back to the kitchen because the meat was less than room temperature! Received plates back in about 5 minutes with comment "cook said that meat cools down because of bed of cold corn (which is not true when pre-heating plates and served promptly)". And on replacement plates, no vegetable decoration just corn, meat, and two wedges of potatoes. However, food was tasty which is only positive. Rest was AWFUL!! Making the story really bad is that we had a waitress on her second day and the service was accordingly. Had to wait for bread, wine and food was served the first time that belonged to another table. NEVER AGAIN. No WiFi which has become a 21st century necessity, whether you use it or not. An over-priced, overblown hype just because of the white table cloth and classy interior? read more

Pricing is more than fair given the sophistication of the food and the generous portions, especially for breakfast/brunch. They also serve crepes at every meal, which is nice if you're looking for something lighter at dinner. The menu is a mix of French and French-influenced American. It has enough variety to please a crowd or your mood, but not so much to overwhelm you. We held our wedding here and they did an amazing job with the food and the details. I give it 3 stars because it's a fairly new restaurant and is currently struggling with finding it's place. The first time I came, I was thoroughly unimpressed. Food took forever to come, and when it did, I found it bland and unimpressive. The tables had messed up legs which made eating a noisy affair. Additionally, the place was pitch black (not literally) which made reading the menu quite difficult. My second visit was for a New-year's day brunch. I loved it. Polar opposite of the first experience. Food was delivered promptly, ambience had changed (probably due to the time of day), and I loved the banana crêpe that I ordered. Third time, I made a mistake and hold myself half-accountable for my ordering decision. I ordered lobster- yes, in VT (that part was my mistake). Unsurprisingly, it lacked fresh flavor and shouldn't have been on the menu. Overall, the front of the house is so-so. The French lady (one of the owners, along with her husband) is a fantastic hostess and has always made a point of coming over and making sure everything is fine. Waiting staff not so much. Since they took over Roland's, the couple has really tried to revamp things but hasn't quite hit the spot yet. The inside looks fantastic and the bar seems great.
