Ham and cheese croissant. That's all you need to know. Now that you know that, I will also share that the otter paw, apple strudel, any flavor scone, and even the premade breakfast sandwiches in the little takeout case are all excellent and fresh and delicious! Friendly fast service with a smile is always nice also !

chocolate pinwheel
Sarah S.

i went on a sunday around noon and ordered a vegetarian banh mi and chocolate pinwheel. it was VERY busy when i went and i had about a 45 minute wait. people who ordered after me got their food first, even though my sandwich was just vegetables (this is my reasoning for giving 4 instead of 5 stars). the food was REALLY good, with fresh vegetables and flavorful pickled vegetables. the bread was fresh and tasty. the chocolate pinwheel was also very good. if you're looking for a sit-down place, though, especially during the winter, maybe pick another place as they have limited indoor seating. overall i would definitely recommend going here, but maybe try to avoid popular times if you don't want to wait as long as i did.

Breakfast panini

If you come here prepare to wait a minimum of 30 minutes for your sandwich, no matter how crowded or long the line is. I went here when it was crowded and my friend waited an hour for a sandwich that never came. The staff is rude. All they serve for breakfast are paninis, which is just grocery store wheat bread with egg. It's horrible. Not even a decent panini. The pastries are always stale and they never have normal options in stock (like a croissant, chocolate croissant, or cinnamon roll). Everytime I go they only have weird pastries left, like orange, lemon, etc. Oh and the sweets are horrible. The macarons are a joke. They're not real macarons. These people don't know how to make a decent pastry. I hate this place lol. I have gone several times now due to the lack of options and trying to give it a decent shot but every time I am disappointed. Go to Middlebury bagels. It's 10000% better. Or Royal oak coffee. I also hear haymakers is good.

Lemon poppyseed otter claw. Scrumptious!

Pretty much every single thing I have tried here has been fantastic; from the otter paw, to the coffee, to the cookies. The employees are so nice and so friendly and ready to answer any questions you might have. The place is nice and clean, with tables throughout outside on different deck and porch areas. The staff will bring your goodies that they warm up out to you and do it with a smile. The only issue I had was with the ham and cheese croissant. The croissant was SO good (perfectly flakey and buttery and YUM), but there was zero cheese in it. It had all melted out. So, I had some warm ham in a croissant, which I don't find tasty at all. I gave it to a friend, so it was enjoyed. I would reccomend trying wrapping the ham around the cheese and seeing if maybe that would help? Another person in our group got the same thing and they had a little crust of cheese on one corner of their croissant, but that was it. But don't miss out on this spot, seriously. That's the only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars - it's definitely worth a stop in and enjoying the variety of scrumptious goodies they have!

I had the Vermonter sandwich and it was mainly lettuce or watercress. Not filling at all. I also had an apricot and ginger scone which had more apricot than ginger. Nice outdoor seating and location.

Egg sandwich with veggies (peppers, onions, mushrooms)

We stopped here on the way back from camping and it was just what we needed. Nestled in the tiniest little college area, this bakery had good breakfast sandwiches for us to eat and run. The coffee didn't have the best selection, but it was good enough. Would highly recommend the Vermont cheddar and ham croissant!

With lacking service, if you need an international fusion fix, this is your best bet in Middlebury. This resto will NOT be a repeat for me but some in my family, like it. Hence the higher rating. How about seasonal, rotating food offerings with yummy options for both carnivores and vegetarians? Then get yourself to Crooked Ladle and prepare to dig in. Standards like the nachos (IMHO the best in Vermont), falafel (bring on the hot sauce and tzatziki, please!), and French fries (crispy and well-seasoned) make this an ever-reliable stop when you need a nosh. Seasonal salads and soups are fresh, locally sourced, and nourishing while also being creative enough to make you wonder what that extra ingredient might be. "Garnishes" like red flannel hash, sauteed red cabbage, or stir-fried veggies could easily stand alone as sides (or the perfect midnight snack). Specials like pasta with pork ragu (topped with a tiny green salad for crunch) or perfectly-fried fish and chips are not to be ignored - be sure to ask about additions to the menu. The kitchen's sauce game is strong, too, elevating dishes like gnocchi or pork loin to the next level. A note: Because the Middlebury restaurant space grew out of a catering business (they still churn out fabulous food and drinks for private events, btw) you will not find selections like cooked-to-order burgers or steaks. But you can get those anywhere. Come here to treat your palate to something more interesting.

We had a destination wedding in Burlington and we can all confidently say that Chef Larry's food was one of the highlights of our special weekend. Even at our restaurant reception dinner, our guests were half-joking when they said they wished they were eating Chef Larry's food instead. We had our wedding in Vermont primarily because we loved the food, and Chef Larry's cooking exemplified everything we adored about Vermont's farm to table scene. He was so patient and accommodating when it came to our guests with specific dietary restrictions. He happily made smaller portions to accommodate those guests, all without sacrificing presentation or timeliness. None of our guests with dietary restrictions felt like they were missing out or being given a sub-par substitute. I highly recommend the Vermont Cheese Plate. Chef Larry only put cheeses on there that could be found within a 50 mile radius. These were some of the best cheeses I've ever tasted. In fact, all of his ingredients were fresh and local. We ordered 1 Vermont Cheese Plate, 2 appetizers (the lamb lollipops and spinach and feta mushrooms), the heirloom tomato salad, the roasted roots as a side dish, and 2 entrees (roasted pork loin and coconut chickpea curry). This fed 14 people and we even had leftovers for days! Since we were staying in an Airbnb, we were worried that the kitchen might not be able to accommodate the needs for cooking a huge meal, but Chef Larry came prepared. We were able to go through the kitchen and let him know what we had/didn't have, but he was able to provide his own kitchen ware and serving platters (we provided plates and utensils). This was a huge relief and convenience because we didn't have to go out shopping for serving platters that we would only use once. We did not have to lift a finger. Instead of us cooking and hosting or even driving to a restaurant, ordering, and waiting, we were able to use that time to spend quality time with all of our guests and enjoy the meal together in the comfort of our Airbnb. This was so much more fun than going to restaurant. Chef Larry truly took care of everything so we were able to focus on just enjoying ourselves. In addition to being an amazing cook, Chef Larry is a truly genuine and kind person. Our guests enjoyed chatting with him in the kitchen and you can really tell that he loves what he does. Honestly, we are so jealous that Vermont has a gem like him. If you are considering hiring a personal chef/event chef in Vermont, look no further than Chef Larry! His cooking is a next level and a crucial supplement to the Vermont food experience. You will not regret it!

I wouldn't hesitate to hire him for any event!! everyone raved about the quality of the food, and not having to lift a finger to cook it made it taste all the better. thanks again larry for making our night!!

The restaurant was built around a 1921 Hacker Craft wooden boat, beautifully restored by friends of mine at Morgan Marine in Silver Bay, NY. The boat used to house an actual salad bar, pre-Covid. Now it's just a beautifully appointed mahogany boat in a big room just past the hostess station. The rest of F&I is a series of small and large rooms, some very intimate. There are artifacts everywhere (that you need to explore). Recently visited w best friend, Locomotive Breath (formerly known as Zagbolt). Sat at the bar. Seemingly lots of locals. Very capably waited on by bartender Andre. He was effective, efficient, and gregarious. Perfect young man for the job. We split a dozen wings (one of the specials which were smothered in an orange, peppery glaze). Delicious! I also had a cheeseburger w bacon. Perfectly broiled on a substantial bun. And onion rings. Plentiful. LB had a mesquite chicken panini w mashed. He loved it. Large selection of tapped and bottled beer, wine, alcohol of all kinds. One thing that kind of caught my attention was another patron's prime rib. Very fatty, on the thin side, $39. Did not think it was a good presentation or value. F&I is still one of the best restaurants around. Museum-like, and good food. Curtailed hours compared to years past, and looking for help (of all kinds). 4 stars
