I visit this place one a year when I visit my sister. I have fond memories of previous years but will discuss this year's visit. Lots of great flavors to choose from. I decided on the "back alley mint chip." It's called "back alley" as they used to grow their own mint in a previous location. Now they source it from local farms. Perhaps the best mint chip I've ever had. The ice cream was white with a slight green tint - what you'd expect if using fresh mint. The chocolate chips were flat square little pieces - much preferred to the type you find in cookies. 5 stars for the flavor. 5 stars for no green food coloring. This place is so cute!! First of all, we were greated with such warm welcomes from the owner and the two girls opening. They were explaining the whole baking side of things, how the ice cream is made in house (and amazing by the way). Plus, they go through SO many eggs, they literally give egg whites out for free!!! Maddie behind the counter was very friendly and outgoing and makes a mean double dirty chai latte, and Doug makes a great breakfast sandwich! Try the one on the homemade biscuit-WOW! On my way north, stopped in Vergennes to walk my dog. Love this quaint town filled with little shops. Saw the cafe for a bathroom opportunity and noticed they served local ice cream. Cafe is clean and open. They sell their ice cream in their fridge, small and big sizes also. I tried couple of flavors, but settled on basil and Lavender/vanilla. Both flavors had very subtle flavors. I will say it's very sweet and rich. I don't like when it's that sweet, but others might. In the bathroom, I read this place won recognitions. We read the reviews and made this a destination stop on our way to Burlington. We had the Maple Creemee (soft serve) and Teenage Dream (scoop). The soft serve was very rich and lusciously smooth and creamy. The scoop was delicious - just a little bit icy. Easily one of the top 3 ice cream shops in VT, hands down. Whenever we have visitors in the Middlebury area, I always always always recommend a visit to Lulu. For the ice cream purists, finding a flavor is a little difficult, especially when choosing from more "exotic" flavors like basil or curried peanut butter. My favorites flavors are easily Panther Pride (mascarpone, black currant, graham cracker--this thing actually tastes like cheesecake), and the peppermint-type ones. We've been to Lulu's twice during our summer visit to VT even though the store is 30 minute drive. I now realize that I've never had authentic homemade ice cream before going to Lulu's. I thought I had, but now that I've tasted how fresh and flavorful their ice cream is, I keep wanting to make the 30 minute drive back to Bristol for ice cream! LuLu is the real deal. Made with fresh local cream and inventive flavors this ice cream is beyond delicious. Case in point, I was in Vermont for about 48 hours and went ... twice. Having grown up around Bristol I was honestly a little apprehensive when Lu Lu's came to existence a few years back. I was a pretty dedicated patron of the town Cremmee Stand but I can honestly say after multiple experiences Lu Lu's provides, by far, the best ice cream in town. The shop itself is cute and quaint and provides a small space for eat in with some additional tables outside. The ice cream is homemade (starting on site this year for the first time). The flavors are diverse and change frequently. I've had curried ice cream, whiskey ice cram, bourbon ice cream and simple favorites like cookies and cream and cookie dough. Each one is as good as the last. The flavors are always extremely present and are never lost in the cold temperature. The ice cream is extremely smooth and creamy in a way that has you coming back for more and more. It's worth every penny for a scoop at Lu Lu's. read more
