Service could use a little smile now and then. I get it when you're that busy sometimes you let the job get to you. But the sandwiches the sandwiches are the best around. Definitely try the blueberry grilled cheese. Sounds weird but totally works and is so delicious. Can't wait to have another. The cucumber salad was great and they have a little bit of everything in the store. Nice set up. Congrats to the owner. Their lobster rolls are the best around and they always have the best selection of oysters (if they don't sell out). Very impressive assortment of both local and unique specialty items. I asked if they sold maple butter and although they didn't have any, the owner whipped up some for me right there on the spot....and it's absolutely incredible. What a cool store! All sorts of prepared food and meals that are deliciously fresh. They have a nice selection of gourmet groceries as well as an excellent selection of wine and beer. Great specialty sandwiches, lobster roll is a family favorite. Delicious baked goods, pies, cup cakes and cookies are all superior. Lots of variety of salads and prepared food in their deli case. Great selection of local cheeses, and smoked meats. Excellent selection of local beers. A very nice hand picked wine selection. Lots of gourmet sundries and even a small selection of guitar accessories. Owners are exceptional people too. read more

Just stopped in for my first time for a quick bite to eat. Generally I'm just grateful for any business doing more than bags of chips in these small Vermont towns so I was happy to find this place! All in all I want to say it seems like a great little market- smells good, they make sandwiches, have some yummy food in the display case, nice local cheeses and beers available, etc. ANYWAY, if the store is five stars for the area I'm giving my two star review based on the one star customer service I just got from the person I assume is the owner. I stopped in for a half sandwich. I'm on a budget, about 5'2" and 120 lbs and couldn't eat a full sandwich anywhere even if I had the budget of Kim Kardashian. I also don't eat meat which is pretty standard in 2019- not some wild abnormal dietary trend by any means. I ordered a veggie sandwich with mustard, mayo, hummus, cheese along with four veggies.... lettuce, onion, cucumber and banana peppers which by my calculations is almost like two veggies since lettuce and onion are standard to almost any sandwich. Long story short the guy taking my order was just writing stuff down and the person who I assume owns the place hollers over, not in a polite manner mind you, that my order will be EXTREMELY difficult to fit on a half sandwich. That's a first for me I tell ya.... I literally order a half veggie sandwich everywhere I go and typically get whatever I damn please on it. Anyway, long story short it's just annoying as hell when this kind of stuff happens. First off, I'm a chef not a sandwich maker but I DID spend many years as I progressed through the food world making sandwiches. Nearly a decade actually. Although I truly believe there IS an art to proper sandwich making I do assure you it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to stick 4 veggies on a half sandwich, in fact I'm willing to bet I've managed to get a minimum of 12 on a sandwich! Beyond that, I think when running a business you really have to choose your battles and the customer should generally get what they want unless it's unreasonable (FOUR VEGGIES ON MY GD SANDWICH ISNT UNREASONABLE AM I RIGHT???) and I feel like the value of a good review in the business world is worth the price of about 10ish sandwiches. I would have just given one star but the guy who helped me at the counter was a sweetheart so he got the extra star. Also just going to note I assume the middle aged white man who told me my sandwich was nearly impossible to make instantly judged me by my age to assume I had no clue how to make a sandwich without knowing I'm a well known chef in the area, possibly one of the better known female chefs in the entire state and I could probably show him a lot about how to make a proper sandwich. Rudest experience ever. These people are flat out self-entitled, judgemental, and rude. After returning home to Vermont I dropped in for this establishment to overhear my conversation about returning. They lectured me about quarantines, questioned why I came to their shop, and instructed me to wait outside for service. Let me clarify, in our family we have a member in cancer remission. As a result of this situation, we're all tested weekly to ensure the safety of our family member. We always produce negatives test, wear our masks in public, and wash our hands. Moreover, my flight had more safety protocols than entering this establishment. Temperature checks, face masks, and distanced seating. Locals living their daily lives are more a risk than I was. Long story short, the owners are awkward, rude, and the food is just trash. If they don't want to deal with the public, then don't work with the public. Lobster roll was nearly $20, little lobster, and full of celery with mayo. It was disgusting. Never returning, nor will my guests when visiting Vermont. read more

Wonderful little store with a great selection of wine, beer, and gourmet foods as well as takeout. My boyfriend ordered a Cubano sandwich and I ordered a chicken breast sandwich with mushrooms and melted cheese, and both were so delicious. My boyfriend said it was the best Cubano he has ever had. If we lived close by, we'd be stopping by frequently. read more

Posting a COVID 19 precaution. Picked up food from here today and was very surprised to see that the workers preparing food and working the cash register were not wearing masks or gloves. They are using their Square machine to have people sign for credit cards with their bare fingers and not sanitizing the machine afterwards. This is a great little place for speciality items, sandwiches, etc but I think the owners could do a better job mitigating the spread virus through taking precautions currently required by the Vermont Department of Health and Governor's Scott's executive order. We're all in the together! Let's support local businesses and ask their support in keeping their patrons safe. read more

I've been coming to Gilfeather's for several years, but after today, enough is enough. My fiancé and I arrived today and were greeted by a sign on the door that says the proprietor and his wife don't wear masks while they prepare food--they claim they have a "special exemption" from the state and that they don't have to wear masks. COVID-19 has been at an all-time high this weekend and they're basically telling you that unless you believe in magic that you shouldn't enter their business. Against our better judgment, we went in anyway. There were 5 other people in the tiny shop and there was no hint of social distancing. No one greeted us when we walked in to even say something like "we'll be right with you" and for the price of their "provisions" they owe their customers at least that. We watched while the proprietor's wife (I only call her that because he makes a point of mentioning that he is the proprietor and she is his wife) put on a single plastic glove to handle cash...while still using the ungloved hand to put it in the register! And then no hand washing before returning to her prep station. These people seem to think that because they wear chef's coats that they're above following safety guidelines during the worst stages of this pandemic yet. We don't care about your "exemption". We don't care that you two live together. What about the rest of us? You're not protecting your customers. We shouldn't be thinking about what we are required to do, but what is SAFE to do. The way they're running things is wholly inappropriate during a health crisis. We are appalled. read more

We spotted the "lobster roll" sign on the blackboard and pulled right in. The smell inside was wonderful- smoky barbecue and baked good sweets. What a great assortment of goods in the deli case, nice assortment of wine and beers, chocolates etc. The lobster roll was great as was the coleslaw, we had a nice little picnic on a beautiful day. Had high expectations after reading the review in 7 Days but left disappointed. Sandwiches were on the small side on sliced bread. I would rather have paid $2 more for a decent sized sandwich. I had the Reuben which was OK but somewhat bland. The cole slaw was terrible - dry and flavorless. The blackberry cupcake was delicious. I recommend going somewhere less for sandwiches and come here for dessert. read more

I stopped on the way home from Burlington. Perfect place to stop for to go food. As Vermont as it gets. They had a huge variety of sandwiches/pasta/baked goods/drinks. I got a special sandwich which was a little pricey but it was delicious and contained organic/local foods which made it worth it. I would definitely recommend if you want a good bite as you're on the road and don't mind spending your money on quality food/drink. read more
