I've been coming to Red Onion since high school, back when they were at their original location on Church Street. They've since moved to a new location in Charlotte, and I finally got to check out their new location today. Luckily, they haven't changed their menu much since the last time I was there! As a vegetarian, I always order their Spinach Melt sandwich, which comes packed with spinach, delicious toasted bread homemade bread, mushrooms, red onions, melted Cabot cheese, and garlic mayo. It's a simple sandwich that I always crave. I also always get their Aloha cookie with powdered sugar, shredded coconut, chocolate chips, and maybe almonds? I can't remember what else is in it. It's a delicious, simple spot with chips, cookies, sandwiches, and drinks. I love the new location, and I hope they're doing well here! There were only two people working, and service was a little slow because of that, but we came around noon when there was a bit of a lunch rush. We waited probably about 20 minutes for our sandwiches after ordering. Sandwiches are about $13 each I believe. There's a table or two inside, and a couple tables outside. The price I was charged was different than what was posted, when I questioned why, he said it was tax. So, I definitely overpaid for a disgusting egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. It had a very weird flavor when I took my first bite. I don't know if their pans they used were clean. It didn't look like a clean kitchen. They charge you as soon as you order, then cook it. Absolutely revolting... do not waste your money here. The owner is unfriendly and overcharging desperate tourists in a food desert. Many better options available at any gas station. The bread was old and dry, inedible. The services was hostile and awkward... it felt like some sort of surreal performance art piece. We left our 3 sandwiches uneaten for $43. We didn't even waste our time complaining... if they think this is an acceptable standard, there is no hope for them. This place used to be in downtown burlington but was so bad that locals avoided it and even former employees had warned me this owner is more interested in the bottom line than health and safety practices. I have driven past this place many times, and decided to stop to pick a sandwich for lunch yesterday. I had the tuna on sourdough. The tuna was ok. a bit heavy on pepper, but the bread was not edible. It tasted like balsa wood. No flavor. I think the baker forgot to put salt in the dough and it did not have any of the tangy (slow fermentation) "sour" dough flavor. Maybe it was just a bad bake. read more

Pros: nice hearty sandwich which is exactly what we wanted. Cons: we found blue shreds of plastic inside three of our four sandwiches. When my husband went in to show the staff, they brushed him off like it was nothing, saying "oh, that's just from a kitchen supply, nothing grody." No apology or anything. I went to Red Onion Cafe for lunch the other day. After someone suggested to me a great place to grab food on Church St. They mentioned how the bread is baked freshly every day. That was enough to get a yes out of me. I walked in and didn't have to wait. I arrived before the lunch rush, which was great. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich on honey oat wheat bread. Which was around 10 bucks, but it was quite large and filling. You can tell that all of the baked goods were fresh. I also bought a strawberry banana scone and some cookies. Everything I tasted was beyond satisfactory. I would go back again for sure. I sat outside in the back seating area. It was nice to be out in the fresh air, but not having to be in the view of everybody watching as they walk up and down the streets. I recommend this place if deli sandwiches are your jam. read more

I live in Saint Albans so it was quite the request to drive to Charlotte for a sandwich. I would have to say it was worth it, and here's why. Fresh, everything was fresh. Not like when Dunkin Donuts says the donuts are fresh, but they are 12 hours old, but there was literally a nice old lady sweating, hard at work cranking out bread right in front of me. The bread. A hearty honey oat loaf that only a real baker could ever make properly at that scale. Perfectly balanced honey notes through a high quality flour, kneaded to perfection, and proved like an artist. This is the type of bread that comes from decades of hard work and failure. True craftsmanship is what it is. The lettuce was so fresh it tasted like the plucked it from the garden on a cold dewed morning air. Red onions were the same way, the flavor you only get when a vegetable had recently exited the ground. The chicken must have been butchered nearby to have that level of taste. Perfectly moist and tender without any brining, rubs, or pounding out. The only thing left to be desired for me would be that the chicken salad wasn't thoroughly mixed. Three quarters of my sandwich tasted like a chicken sandwich with mayo. The last little bit had the flavor that was intended, exploding in bursts of fresh dill and garlic, I sadly couldn't place the others because I had so little of the seasoning throughout the sandwich, but that little bite that i did have at the end was spectacular. I know it's far away, I know it's just a sandwich place that has literally only 4 chairs, but it's just that good. So many dogo places out there these days without passion. You come here for the food, not the service... We were looking for a place to have a quick lunch and based on the reviews, we decided to stop by the Red Onion. The sandwiches were big and all ingredients were fresh. Prices were a bit high: $25 for two sandwiches... For this price, you cannot even get a cup of water (COVID restrictions). But the worst part was the service: the young staff is rude. There were 3 people working there and no one smiled! Customers were lining up and the staff was extremely inefficient. I can't remember when the first time I was exposed to Red Onion sandwiches. It had to be while I was interning for the Church Street Marketplace. This pedestrian street grew on me during this internship mainly because although it was just three miles from my birthplace, it was an area unexplored by this mini Magellan until I reached the college years. I can't call The Red Onion a deli, a sandwich shop or a sub store because of my fear that someone is going to associate to a Subway. It may better be described as a coffee shop meets your grandmother's kitchen but looks like your buddy's college apartment. If that doesn't conjure a picture in your head, it's not supposed to because chances are you have never had a Red Onion experience before. It is noticeably different the second you open the door, a seemingly refurbished door that would be more likely lead to a living room of large Victorian, not an eating establishment. Once through this rustic gate-keeper your first impression won't be visual but of smell. Freshly baked bread with notes of fresh grains and oats quickly overcome any frustration of finding a parking place anywhere nearby. Now, listen up. Listen to the difficult decisions that await you. You'll need to know these or they will hit you all at once sending you into a furry no unlike the snowy formations that gather outside of the Red Onion windows in winter. Breads: Rosemary Garlic, Honey Oat, 9 Grain, Wheat, Sourdough, French Bread; Meats: The usuals and all meats are slow roasted on the premise. Toppings, Red Onions (of course), Sprouts, Green Apples. Cheeses: Way too many to list but by far my favorite is the smoked maple cheddar. First of all, any person that combines green apples and cheddar with premium meat should be called an artist not a sandwich maker. In my opinion, combining the red onions, the maple smoked cheddar, and granny smith apples and fresh bread that is always cooked that morning are what make these sandwiches a delight, no, an indulgence. I stopped here on a little trip to Burlington to get some tea! I was hungry but didn't know what I wanted, sometimes nothing sounds really good! Sandwiches are always an solid choice. I was on a day trip to Burlington and was looking for a unique Vermont restaurant to eat it. The Red Onion was one of two places in the city that was highly recommended to me. At first I was a bit daunted by the prices -- they are high -- but given the amount of food you get for the price you pay, it comes out to a more-than-fair deal. I ordered the signature red onion sandwich on honey oat bread, and boy, was it delicious. I could tell how fresh their bread was -- made in-house, nonetheless! -- and they certainly didn't skimp out on filling the sandwich with a sizable amount of quality ingredients. Here's another way of putting it: If the Red Onion advertised the sandwich with a picture of the sandwich itself, what you see on the ad would be exactly what you got. I finished my meal feeling satisfied, which is more than I can say about other expensive sandwich shops I've visited. I wouldn't recommend eating here if you are in a rush: They put lots of time into making you the best sandwich they can (patrons who made orders ahead of me came in frequently to ask about the status of their food). You may have to sit back and salivate in hunger as the time between your order and your food delivery ticks on, but in the end, the wait will be well worth it. The staff members are, for the most part, friendly and are great about suggesting different food options based on your personal preference. They'll also offer to bring your food to you, regardless of where you choose to sit (in the restaurant, on the front patio, or in their enclosed back patio...which has a hanging garden!). My go to is the 'Red Onion' - slivers of granny smith apples piled high with thinly sliced turkey, bacon slices, cheddar cheese, red onions and roasted red pepper mayo, all stacked between two thick cut, house made slices of bread - which is then put in the over to get all melty and toasty! The soup and large cookies are the only reasons to ever eat. The staff may sometimes be helpful, but more time then not, they are just mad you are standing there looking at you wondering "what the hell". Was in town for the first time and the Red Onion Sandwich at the Red Onion came highly recommended by a close friend so we knew we had to go and see what it was all about. I arrived and it literally was -5 degrees outside. The snow had just fallen and the walkway outside had been barely cleared making the trek for this sandwich one to remember lol. I ordered two of those bad boys to go and got a hot chai while I waited. After coming in from the tundra the warm cider was perfect. The Red Onion is a hot sandwich with turkey, bacon, apples, red onions, smoked gruyere cheese and sundried tomato mayo. YUMMMM! I wasn't expecting it to be warm and clearly didn't read the description because I was surprised as to how long the sandwich took to make, however, I had nowhere to go and I was enjoying my cider and being out of the cold, so wait I did! We took the sandwiches across the way and ate them in the car. We wanted to check out the lake which was a frozen tundra so we gladly sat in our warm car, with the music playing and these massive sandwiches in hand. It was perfect! My boyfriend and I were on a New England Road Trip and we hit up the red onion on a recommedation from his cousin who used to live in Burlington. What a fantastic recommendation indeed. I don't know if this place would be awesome for dinner but word of the wise to the lunch crowd--eat at the Red Onion. I also tried one of their peanut butter bars--freaking fantastic and you can't beat it's location on Church Street either. If it's nice out be sure to sit outside, the interior was a bit warm and small and there tends to be cluster of people at waiting in line, right before the door when it's busy. Huge sandwich! It's a small shop with very limited seating, so it is good for take out. The food takes a bit of time to make, and there's usually a pretty decent line, but it's worth it! My favorite sandwich is the Vermonter, and you have to try it! It's got turkey, cranberry mayo, apple slices, cheddar and bacon. I make it all the time at home and always think about the Red Onion and how theirs is so much better! Pricing is very reasonable given the location, and they also have a cooler of drinks (Snapple, lemonade, sodas, etc) as well as assorted chips. We loved the sandwiches and the atmosphere here! We had deliciously prepared egg salad on one and roast turkey on the second sandwich served on fresh, hand cut artisian bread with fresh toppings. The back of the cafe had a wee outdoor patio with three little tables and chairs. It was nice to get away from the crowds and savour this nice lunch. Thanks to our friendly and expert sandwich maker with a smile. The chocolate croissant was a nice finishing touch too - try it. Burlington is such a cute little college town anyways, but this little sandwich shop is right in the middle of Church Street, where everything is happening. Their special sandwiches all look delicious, and I ended up getting the red onion. It took about 10 minutes for them to prepare it, and when I got it it wasn't really even warm. This is a solid place for lunch. They make many varieties of their own breads and always have side dishes, to boot. I'm an especially big fan of their cookies. They make about 8 different kinds, they are very large and fresh. Hard to go in there for a sandwich and not walk out with a cookie that's nearly as big as your head. It's especially nice that they do chocolate chip AND chocolate chip with walnuts. Some people prefer their CC cookies with nuts (me).
