This is the epitome of a small coffee shop and I wish there was one in my town and every town I have to work in! Would never go to D&D or Starbucks again if Java could be everywhere, but then I guess they wouldn't be java love! Each cup is crafted on the spot by one of the friendly barista's and questions are answered with intelligent responses! As though they may actually care about what they are doing, what a unique concept!!! I had the opportunity to enjoy a turkish coffee for the first time and it was an interesting cup of jave. A little on the sweet side for my liking, but it provided a new and enjoyable experience. While sipping my java we sat and enjoyed the ambience of this cosy little spot taking in the cool decor and the chill vibe. It's seattle meets NJ. Phew! Breath of fresh air! Java Love is the best. I've been going for years now (usually multiple times a day) and nothing compares 2u Java Love.

This is the one of the few places that I can say that I really love EVERY DETAIL about this establishment. coffee - we all know it's amazing!! milk - they have every single kind available (including soy and almond milk)!! sugar - i forget all the options but agave was one of them!! chai - from our local yogic chai cycle!! pastries - also from local bakeries (i.e. little daisy bakeshop!!) payment - they accept the LevelUp app (LOVE places where I can use my phone to pay)!! wifi - free. duh. I just wish they had longer hours but I'm glad there is at least one great alternative to Starbucks in Montclair!! read more

Nice coffeehouse with an organic vibe for a Sunday afternoon. Even the toppings & spices for your coffee or tea is organic. Staff is warm, friendly and understated in their expertise. The front staff member was willing to offer advice kindly & without pretention. The chai latte I had with almond milk was perfectly balanced and smooth. The Monut is a baked confection rolled in cinnamon. I had the Nutella flavor which paired well with the well-rounded spices in the chai. The Barista on duty has a good sense of humor. I've been here with my family in tow after a movie at the Bellevue and it's a popular place to stop so it does get crowded. But the staff stays up-beat. Good place for all generations. read more

I wanted to give Java 5 stars merely because the coffee is pretty good, well priced and the shop itself is so cute...but after knowing that they add a 75 cent up-charge to bakery items that I can get walking less than a block away and tell me it's capitalism leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I can see a 25 cents but anything more than that seems like greed. read more

I usually love this place but I had the worst experience today! I went in with my friend to place an order and while I was ordering the girl helping me sneezed directly into BOTH her hands and rubbed her hands together. Rather than taking a moment to wash her hands like someone should, she then proceeded to start our order. She then went to grab a muffin I ordered with her BARE HANDS, thats when I stopped her and asked her to wash her hands. Instead of being nice about it she actually got annoyed and so did the other girl working there, and we got some major attitude. I think the owners here should have a serious talk with their employees to avoid this in the future. Not only was I offended by the sneeze but the attitude as well. read more

I came here to meet up with a friend who was passing in town from a drive up from Philly. She had to really pee and used the bathroom at Java Love only to discover a clogged toilet of number 2. She told the only worker and he said nothing (he was making my cappuccino at the time). She asked then if there was someone else she could tell and he said nope, he was the only one working. He never even looked at her during this verbal exchange. So I, embarrassed for the guy, suggested she go next door to Manhattan Bagel to use their restroom. Unfortunately there they made her buy something, but no apology at all from Java Love and no one fixed the bathroom during my hour plus stay. Granted, the barista looked like a high schooler, but c'mon, it's common sense to attempt to fix the situation. The cappuccino was ok and the ambiance was nice enough for a casual get together, but our coffee table was wobbly. All in all, though I try very hard to support small business, this made me yearn for Starbucks. read more

I am usually a Starbucks Dark or Medium Roast kind of coffee drinker. Black, no milk or sugar. I stopped into Java Love on Church street recently and was pleasantly surprised. Their dark roast regular coffee was just as good if not better than Starbucks. (starbucks is only a stones throw away from the church st location) I have yet to try a Java Love specialty drink (latte etc) or espresso so I can't comment on those. I also have to give them credit for having the moxie to open up so close to starbucks. Both Montclair locations are in close proximity to this coffee Goliath. There are aspects of this coffee shop that I dislike but tolerate. However, because of what happened on a recent visit, I doubt I'll return. I dislike that Java Love charges extra for two shots in a small Americano, which, as a result, ends up costing over $3. In my experience, most coffee shops make Americanos with two shots, and both shots, plus the hot water and careful preparation, cost around $2.50. Anyway, I knew I would be paying extra for an Americano last Friday when I went to Java Love, and I was prepared to do so for the sake of having a somewhat bustling place to read and people-watch for a couple of hours. When I placed my order, I noticed that the cashier was acting a bit strange. The café was busy, though, so I was trying to move through the exchange of money and beverage quickly. A woman who'd placed her order before me circled back around me--to place another order, I presumed. She appeared to be a typical Montclair mom (i.e., affluent, preoccupied). This woman reached into the tip jar and extracted a dollar, the way that people do when they've put in a five and are making change for themselves. This practice strikes me (I'm from the south) as somewhat rude, but it happens (and the woman said "excuse me" as she did it). The cashier, one foot away from and facing both the woman and me, didn't bat an eye, so I figured my assumption about her behavior was correct. I move away from the counter and consider myself lucky to find a small corner where I can settle in with my book and drink. The semblance of peace lasts about two minutes before an older woman sitting next to me yells--in the confrontational style typical of New Jersey--"You're stealing from the tip jar!"--drawing everyone's attention to a woman I can only assume is the same person who was in front of and behind me in line. A few moments of silent awkwardness ensue. They are quietly broken by a couple of guys sitting next to the older woman, now visibly shaken, who begin to reassure her that she's done the right thing. Thirty seconds later a camera crew wielding a bright light shepherds John Quinones--a "reporter" on a network "news" show, Primetime--to the woman's side, to congratulate her on her distinctive moral achievement. The show that he hosts--which I will not name here--deserves to be criticized for staging moral spectacles of sorts for entertainment purposes. That criticism is out of place here. However, in providing a venue for the show, Java Love consented to having its customers filmed, "tested" and potentially upset for the sake of entertainment--without the customers' consent, of course, because therein lies the entertainment. I find this objectionable because Java Love is a local business presumably committed to serving and, in doing so, fostering and maintaining a local community. It's these values I endorse when I buy coffee there, even though there are aspects of the business that I don't like. A sense of local community is inevitably undermined by hidden surveillance and, still more obviously, by the premise of the show, namely, that some people do the right thing and some people don't, and isn't it fun to figure out which camp everyone belongs to? I hope that other local businesses will consider more carefully the role they play in the community before signing up to serve as the stage for a spectacle and offering up their customers as unknowing participants. read more

Love this place. Baristas know their stuff but aren't haughty. Great selection of baked products, fam friendly and work friendly too. The only negative things I can say are that it can be super popular at times so you may be out of luck procuring a monut or may have to deal with a bit of a line. But overall, I really like coming here. read more

This place is fantastic!! Today was my first time here and I got one of the specials off their hotlist. I can't remember the name but it's cappuccino with Carmel and white chocolate and I asked for it iced. I consider myself a coffee connoisseur and this was no joke one of the best coffees I've ever had. It had a nice strong brew with subtle hints of the flavors. It wasn't overly sweet but in fact perfect. My husband got the iced demon chai, it's a chai with some sprinkled cayenne. The ambiance was very pleasant and the employees were so friendly. My 2 year old accidentally spilled my husbands drink right after we left and the comped us a new one and were so nice about it. Just a random coffee stop became our new factories coffee spot. read more

I come here pretty regularly for my AM coffee fix. I usually have a cappucino or iced coffee - would recommend either. Very friendly staff and free wifi so a good choice for me if I need to get some work done during the week. The atmosphere is pretty laid back and it doesn't get too loud or overcrowded. read more

Rockin spot in u. Montclair that kills the sbux around the corner dead. Similar high priced potions but much better. No stale cake, no newspapers fs. To clarify: they do have croissants and so forth. It is difficult for me to review Java Love without comparing it to the national coffee chain store located nearby. The beverages at Java Love taste better and the prices are a bit cheaper for the most part. Do your own skim latte challenge and decide for yourself. I am giving 3 stars, because my first (many) trips to Java Love were perfect: friendly, speedy service, and a great latte. However, today the milk had spoiled and the result was awful; no time to go back for another one. Last time, the drink was low on coffee and the milk not hot enough. I love the idea of an option to Starbucks; I hope this company can fix its problems and stay in Montclair. However, I am leery of my next trip - if it isn't worth it, I won't be returning. read more

I am so grateful to have Java Love in the neighborhood... It is now my go to house for the morning double espresso. It is a little pricey but well worth it. You get what you pay for here. My new local coffee shop, very cute, very nice staff and very good coffee. The four stars instead of five is because they charge extra for non dairy milks :-/ While this is common, my previous local coffee shop in Hoboken did not do this and I found it very welcoming. Will still continue to frequent this spot as the coffee actually does taste better than the chain shops in the area and it is just a much nicer place to step in to if you care about ambiance and experience. read more
