I had a so-so experience here this morning. The first issue was while placing the order: the barista added four or five extra flavors, bumping up the price of my drink by a few dollars. We pointed out the error, she apologized and removed the extras, and then we paid. Second issue: When I received my drink, it was only a 12 ounce instead of a 16 ounce. I didn't speak up at the time because I thought maybe she entered the wrong size at the register. But later I checked my paper receipt, and I had been charged for a 16 ounce. (I accepted the loss because I didn't want to risk a third thing going wrong.) The coffee itself was good, but I didn't enjoy the experience. I'd never been to Java Jahn, but the bus was running late so I decided to grab a cold brew before heading to work. I tend to make a coffee stop downtown (Cherry Street Coffee and Cedar & Spokes are two of my favorites) but I think I have a new morning routine! The cold brew is soft and almost nutty, but doesn't at all taste watered sown. The tiny shop was a little crowded, but I was in and out in about 2 minutes, which is vastly different than the 25 minutes I waited yesterday at Cherry St (yikes). My son and I stopped into Java Jahn a few weeks ago, while we were walking around the neighborhood and killing some time in between appointments. I had driven past their store many times but hadn't stopped in yet. I have been missing out! This place is a small and quaint, but warm and friendly coffee shop with lots of variety and selections with a caring staff. I had a drip coffee (bottle of water for my son ... he's only 2 so no caffeine for him) and we split a delicious and huge piece of coffee cake! The coffee was rich and full flavored. They have all the usual suspects on their menu and plenty of breakfast, lunch, and snack type foods & sandwiches to choose from. If you're in the area, I would highly recommend stopping there. The staff was super friendly and patient going all the different flavors they have at the coffee shop. I ordered macadamia flavored latte with an extra shot of espress and my partner ordered 20 oz Americano. His americano was super water down. We were expecting the drink will have more espresso shots for a 20 oz, but I guess it's 2 shots with more water. The banana bread with tiny chocolate chips is the best reason to stop in, but if you'd like a good espresso or cortado you will be rewarded. Very small but not as small as a first impression, just glance up while at the counter. Nice baristas and - mixed feelings - it's never busy when I come, which is very random. Considering the availability of good local institutions left in Seattle, Java Jahn provides some of the best upscale coffee services in the greater Seattle area. It is comparable to Cafe Allegro which is the oldest coffee shop in Seattle and served what is known to some people as the original Starbucks! The service and ambiance at Java Jahn will surprise you just getting off of Leary Avenue and stopping by for a small treat or breakfast. The baristas here are a lot like Shelley who used to run Java Hut up on the Miracle Mile, or Aurora, back in the day when the rockabilly scene and the alternative country music scene was really big and all of the ladies used to dress up like Bettie Page and Poison Ivy of the Cramps and the local scene still boasted lots of Greasers and hot-rodders. Java Jahn is the kind of place you find in Friends. Go here. Java Hut is now a really great Mexican Market with Oaxacan queso and really good fresh peppers and meals and spices but I don't know what they did with the back room. I think they use it for their storage and backstock. For local locals, Java Jahn is A Muddy Cup but for Ballard. We need to buy coffee here for all of the volunteers at the Ballard Food Bank around the corner. They don't have a full-service restaurant with a menu but they have an upstairs seating area just like the original Bauhaus in the Melrose Avenue building on Capitol Hill. 11/10. I'll be back y'all! Oh, I love coming here! It's so cozy and quiet. And all the people who work are very nice. The thing I like best, other than the half-hidden mezzanine, is that they display art for sale done by local artists. It's a nice gesture, and something I enjoy seeing at places I frequent. Stopped in here recently to grab some cold beverages in the "scorching" Seattle heat. They put waaaaay too much syrup in their drinks. Yikes! I got a Strawberry Italian soda, and it was so sweet that I couldn't drink it. My friend got an iced hazelnut latte, and even though he drank all of it, he complained about how sweet it was. Very cool space, nice people, and consistently good coffee. Not a lot of parking, but that's alright. They're making the absolute most out of a fairly small area. There's a bar with stools by the door, a couple tables in a corner, and then a loft shoved over everything with a few more tables and chairs. Central to the space, and completely covered by the loft, is the pastry case and coffee bar. The pastries looked pretty amazing. We didn't come in for sandwiches, but we got a couple Americanos and they were tasty and reasonably priced. This is clearly a solid coffee choice in the area, and they keep nice long hours. Located in Ballard, directly across from Mars Hill, this is one great coffee shop. The staff have been friendly, personable and efficient on all visits. The coffee is served quick and has a great taste to it. Prices are a bit on the higher side; however, menu prices do include tax so that helps and punch cards are available for frequent visitors. Overall this is a great coffee shop that has a nice locally owned feel to it and staff that cares about their guests and their products. read more

I was intrigued by this place for a while and my friend and I were looking for a pick me up after a tasty meal at Mean Sandwich (totally recommend- review inception). Java Jahn hit the spot! I love lighthouse coffee which is what they serve. Cold brew I ordered was made with their grounds and had been steeped to perfection! ALSO. Our server was not only super nice as well as knowledgeable, she was a great singer!! Love. This. Place. It is rather tiny with just 2 tables below and a few tables upstairs but that is the charm of it. It's a great cozy spot to grab a book and read or chat with regulars. Popped in for a quick meet up with a friend and was happy we stopped at Java Jahn. I've been in Ballard for a few years and have always wanted to try this place, and I was not disappointed. The vanilla latte I order was well balanced and not too sweet. And comes with a chocolate covered espresso bean. But the star of my visit was the lemon poppyseed bread! The slice was thick and the bread was moist and full of flavor. I would go back just for that. The interior is cozy and there's a small mezzanine with a few tables if you want to post up for a while. Java Jahn makes yummy coffee beverages and has a decent selection of pastries and sandwiches. They actually offer something for the breakfast crowd and the lunch crowd! The lunch sandwiches here are definitely superior to other coffee huts (including Tully's and Starbucks). The thing that really makes this place shine, though, is that they are very friendly. Even at 6:30am and even though most of their customers are shop guys, like my husband, who don't really care about service. I can't believe there are only 3 reviews, except I guess in reality the people who take advantage of this scrumptious place most often are down the road... the auto repair guys, the industrial workers, and odd passersby like me... THAT DRINK ALLOWED ME TO SURVIIIIIVE. Serious survival, too--like 6 hours of stressful conference survival. So anyway, my "mocha?" What is it? 3 shots of the oh so perfect LIGHTHOUSE ROASTERS, mmmmmmmm, then "3" meaning probably more like 5... 'shots' of Ghiradelli white chocolate, a bit of steaming--but lower temp steaming so I could actually -drink- the thing--milk... I was set. I'm getting one tomorrow. And every daggum time I'm in Ballard at their kinda totally weird hours that certainly match the workers over there. It's a really STRANGE place to have AMAZING roasts... oh, and the treats I got were delectabe, too. Then again, CHOCOLATE. Who complains when it's good, egg-and-milk-containing chocolate (I'm a vegan chocolate whiner. I do not want soybean cocoa,kthx.) So yeah, because it's not yet entered... hours: M-F 5:45am-6pm Sat 6:45am-5pm Sun 6:45am-7pm Odd. Place is odd, hours odd... but FANTASTIC. WORTH THE RIDE ON THE 28 or whichever you're on! Their (iced) green tea lattes are truly amazing!! Very refreshing on this hot day. Also, the service was great, the barrista was super sweet. Plus, the internet is fast as well. I actually like that the 'study area' is upstairs, above the entrance, so you feel like you can study without any of the bustle of people ordering drinks. read more

They have cozy interiors but the music is extremely loud and unpleasant (supposedly "new age electronica" - comprising what sounds like sex sounds amidst some industrial sounds - grates the mind to shreds if you're near a speaker). I can't say enough about the friendly staff and very good coffee. I got layed off my job a couple years ago after relocating to Seattle. As soon as I walked in the barista could tell I was having a no good, very bad day. As it turns out, the barista in question was the owner, who immediately asked me what was the matter and when I filled her in on my bad luck replied "oh sweetie, don't worry it will all work out. Let me buy your coffee". She was right, everything did work out, and I will be getting my Jahn on as long as I live in the area. read more

Ann and Patti are the best. I first went there because they had Lighthouse coffee, and after my third visit, Ann asked me if I wanted a 3x tall Americano every time. I said that I did. She asked me how much cream and sugar I take, and now, as soon as I walk in the door, she starts my drink and hands me the same, perfect cup of coffee every time. Visiting from the Bay Area and I stopped by here two days in a row for cold brew coffee and the Asiago bagel I added hazelnut and half&half to my cold brew. Also purchased the chipotle turkey sandwich before going on a hike. There's only cheese, turkey, chipotle sauce, and tomatoes in the sandwich. Hallelujah, I have found my safe place. Super convenient location, especially for me since I come over to Ballard mostly for LA fitness. This place is like 3 min walk from the bridge compared to many other cafes, so maybe not the best for many Ballard residents. It is by the road with couple of parking on the road or next to the place. Easy to find, but easy to miss as well since it it a pretty small place. This is probably the part that did it for me: service. When I walked into an empty cafe, the employee working was cleaning the place. She invited me with nice smile and immediately went to the counter to get my order (surprisingly a lot of people do not get that getting order is more important than making drinks or cleaning the place). She was patient with me being picky on what to choose, and helped me out by explaining the prices and even had full minute conversation on why we hate cream in the donut. She had the attitude and personality of a great barista, and that leaves the customers very satisfied even before getting their drinks. That is probably why they have a lot of regulars here, and I know that since she remembers name of like ten people who came in within 30 minute period. The coffee was pretty good, very light body though, which was surprising since I expect medium body for most Seattle blends. Not too acrid, more of fruity sourness with right amount of bitterness. Perfect with their pastry to make some bittersweet flavor. Overall, I would definitely come here whenever I am not feeling to explore other cafes. Man, if I lived in Ballard, I'd probably go here a lot. My coworkers and I stumbled in here after going to the hardware store and deciding that we desperately needed coffee. Now if we're planning a trip to the hardware store or Sherwin Williams next door, it's always, "can we go to that great little coffee place?" First of all, this place is adorable-- first floor is pretty cramped, but there's a great upstairs seating area. Parking is also a bit scarce. But the food is delicious (I especially enjoy the pesto breakfast sandwich) and so is the coffee. And the baristas are always so friendly. This seems like a great place to curl up with a coffee and a book. I'll definitely come back if I'm ever in the area. read more

This is a cool coffeeshop I just discovered, although it seems like it is well known to the locals. Not a very large space - a garage turned into a coffeeshop with a garage door entrance and small seating area upstairs. There are a few square tables downstairs and then 4 tables upstairs. At least from the bottom level, you get a lot of light coming through. Coffee is good - espresso is better than drip on my taste test. Vanilla latte was tasty - around $3.75-$4. Flavor shots are $0.25 which is cheaper than most places. Also, plenty of food options - sandwiches, bagels, etc. The barista was very friendly - as has been reported by other Yelpers. Good customer service. When I was here on a Sunday afternoon, it was busy (sounds like busier than it usually is). Maybe folks coming from the Mars Hill Church across the street. A little loud with outside street noise coming in. Some background muzac wouldn't hurt. Free wifi. Not so good parking. Definitely a cool space and good coffee. I would return. read more
