Food is okay for the cost. Better even, in the bar, during happy hour. The policy of an entire party having to be there before being sat (even at a two top) is ridiculous though. The lobby is always full for the 20 odd happy hour bar seats - which means waiting outside even when the restaurant is empty. I've went to Elliot or other restaurants instead almost every time that happens. Try as I want to supporting the only Junction "high-end" spot , it's honestly not worth the silly hassle for after work meet up dinners if you aren't literally walking in together. We went for brunch on a Saturday. When we were seated it wasn't very busy. But it started to fill up fairly quickly. Our drinks came promptly but we waited almost an hour for our food. People seated after us got their food before we did. The food came just as we were getting ready to walk out I had the Jax Benedict and it was fantastic. I've only been here twice, but my experience both times was so great that I know I'll be coming back more often. Their servers are on point. They are extremely attentive, very friendly, and knowledgeable. The steaks are amazing!!! I had never ordered steak before my first visit. I got the porterhouse and was blown away! On my second visit I got the ribeye (which was so flavorful and delicious), and again was 100% satisfied when I left. I went to a few other steakhouses after my initial visit, but Jak's is my favorite. They combine quality, pricing, and service much more efficien than any other. read more

I am sorry to say this but our steak was tough full of gristle. Went there last night for dinner. I had the delmonico Oscar style $65.00 prime grade. It wasn't prime grade I have had choice ribeye that was more tender. It had good flavor that was it. My husband had the delmonico his was more tender.I just want management to know. Ate there tonight and it had some good points and some bad points. Cons - - We arrived 45 mins after they opened the place wasn't full but people were still starting to tricking in. Yet it was an hour until our steaks came out. We did have appetizers and then salad and bread but even those came out after a long while waiting. Just oddly a long wait for the start of the night. - There sides salads need a little something other than lettuce - add a tomato and some sliced olives. Lettuce on a plate a salad doesn't not make. - I agree with others it can get a bit noisy in there. - They already charge you a portion of gratuity. It says at the bottom of the menu they will tack it on to pay the kitchen staff. Would rather you add a $1 to each menu item that take a percentage of my meal order and then add onto it. Hope your staff likes having 2.3% tips - Ordered the Special - Bone in Ribeye with some type of peppecorn sauce. Now I knew it had peppercorns but I thought they would just be these peppercorns floating around in the sauce. NOPE. The meat was slathered with peppercorns, top and bottom and I even tried to brush them off. There was sooo many peppercorns sticking into the steaks I couldn't get them off. And me and my boyfriend TRIED to eat and it was some of the worse steaks. (And that's comparing them to grandpa's over cooked under a broiler steaks) We had to send them back and my boyfriends was sooo embarrassed and guilty cause he's never had to do that. Pros - - The Artichoke dip was very tasty and the sourdough bread had a crispy outside and warm chewy inside. REAL sourdough. - I alerted the manager to our Peppercorn problem. She seemed really nice and told us that it was suppose to have that much peppercorn. She offered to get us some plain ribeyes and she didn't make us feel bad for turning back the order. Cause we totally felt bad. - The plain Ribeyes were AMAZING!!!! Like why are you trying to do something with them Jak's Grill? Leave them alone these babies are perfect just the way they are. They were soft in my mouth, and the meat so flavorful and perfectly salted just enough. I'm a bit annoyed you felt you needed to do anything with them, they stand alone by themselves! First dinner of my weekend in Seattle! I'm so excited to eat! We walked a short distance from where we were staying to Jak's Grill in the U district. First impressions - 4 of us showed up at once as we waited for 2 other colleagues - they made us wait in the back corner until our whole party showed up. Didn't offer drinks, didn't offer,.. [Editing myself] anyways-moving on - Our server was great once we were seated. I surprised myself and I DIDN"T ORDER A STEAK!!! I saw Lobster Mac N' Cheese on the menu and couldn't resist. It was beautiful and wonderful! Rich cheese and lots of tasty lobster! Yes! So much left I heated the second half up in my hotel room later. Congratulations Jak's! I was a big fan when I last lived in West Seattle, 2004-2009 but since moving back a few months ago I am not impressed. What happened to this place? Sunday night I was there with a friend from out of town as we were craving a great filet mignon. My medium rare filet came with a cool center and red to the edge, I just prefer it traditional medium rare, this was just too rare. The server had to discuss what I want and I had already said medium rare, so she decided to argue that this was their medium rare. Who argues with a customer who wants their steak cooked more? They certainly were not re-making it, it was just to get it to the med rare temp. This issue got resolved but as we both ate our filets they had gristle in them and tendons and at least 2 oz. of both were inedible. I have never had a filet with that much waste, the quality was not good. I order a filet as I hate gristle, fat, and tendons in my steaks. I asked for my baked potato packed to go as between the salad and steak it would be enough for me at dinner. When she brought the check and my packed potato all seemed well. I opened the potato for lunch the next day and it was really gross as if it was 2 days old with hard yellow edges. I tried to scoop it out but clearly, the cook was mad at me and gave me nasty old dried out potato. I got a mediocre dinner and no lunch!! read more

I came for brunch with my boyfriend. He got the Jak's chophouse dip with potato pancakes and I got eggs and a biscuit (only $5!). Everything was delicious. We both agreed Jak's was one of the best meals we have ever had. Every food item had thought put into it. Even the bread had some kind of Oregano flavor. My boyfriend's current favorite Seattle restaurant has been replaced! The price (at least for brunch) was amazing compared to where we live in Downtown Seattle- and the food so much better! We took the bus from Pioneer Square and it took less than 20 minutes. We have lived in London, NYC, been to all the greats in each city, and Jak's is among the best. The staff treats you like friends. We will be back, and bringing everyone who visits with us as well. read more

(Changing my rating since no comment by management was made. Apparently seating someone right next to the kitchen even when plenty of tables available and has a reservation and we ultimately sat at another available table and watched others sat at open tables - seating POC next to the kitchen is totally normal) We love steak places like El Gauchos and Capital Grill. JaK's is good for a West Seattle restaurant. Our servers have always been kind and friendly. This time like one other time, they attempted to seat us right next to the kitchen door. I made a reservation and there were plenty tables available-not Covid situation bc every other table was established and we chose a different available table. I told the host that we wouldn't sit there. He had a table a few over and did not seat anyone at the bad table for another 30 minutes, with seating people at other open tables. In my opinion, those tables should be the last to seat. People of color/ POC, often get stuck at a lesser table. I figure they try to stick people there that will accept it. We won't. They eventually sat an elderly couple there who did not want to sit there. There were open tables bc I could see the cleared tables that could've held people, not the "every other table" issue. I write this to remind the management and hosts not to sit POC at undesirable tables. I almost stopped to say something but I find it a little too upsetting and I worry that I won't be kind. I should mention right up front I generally don't rate steak places as 5 stars. So often I find them overpriced or that I could easily do better at my house by visiting a good butcher and having a good grill. I don't think that's true with this place. My wife and I stopped by on my birthday for a nice little steak dinner to celebrate. We happened to show up for happy hour, so the place was packed, but we still managed to find a spot at the bar (our usual spot.) We went with a couple of cocktails and settled into the menu. I do wish I could remember the appetizer we went with. It was a special and it was very tasty. As for dinner, my wife went with the filet done Oscar style and mashed potatoes. I went with the NY strip, but was unsure what to do for my side, until the following exchange happened: Me: What do you have for sides? Bartender: Fries, baked potato, potato pancake, garlic mashed and a UFO. Me: A what? Bartender: UFO. Mashed potatoes topped with a potato pancake. Me: Wait - what?? Decision made! There should really be Nobel Prizes for things like that. It was as amazing as it sounds. I don't care what else you decide to get, you need that thing in your life. As for the main event, the filet was awesome, but my NY Strip won in the steak department. It was cooked to a perfect rare, the meat was dense, flavorful and delicious. Unfortunately, we were just too stuffed for dessert. Now, if I can throw in a bonus review... I'm putting this at the bottom because I don't want anyone to see this. I'm being selfish. :-) Jak's has probably the best happy hour in the metro area, or at the very least West Seattle. Now, it's only an hour - 4:30-5:30. And only available at the bar. Number #1 on Yelp right now.. Excellent! Jak's is easily the best 'steak/ ambiance/ value/ service' for your money steakhouse I've ever been to. Other steakhouses 'jak' up their prices.. not here! I've only been to the W. Seattle loc, which you'll miss (I did) over and over again, unless you keep your eyes peeled for the little neon sign. From the outside, it looks like a seedy little store.. kinda 'jak'd' if you ask me. A green awning and a neon sign. Don't let that fool you. GO INSIDE. Vaulted ceilings, dark wood.. it's beautiful! HH Review: We went in to meat and meet. They were both very successful. I got the hamburger, it was perfectly cooked- but as a tip for others: order medium unless you really like it on the rare side of medium rare-and the accompanying fries were crispy and delicious. I had two of the special cocktails- cosmopolitans- which were both good but not overly strong. The service was spot-on, the bartender had our orders before we could even wish for more, the food arrived quickly and the bill was split for 4 of us without even asking. I really liked this place! It's a not fancy, big portions very flavorful steak place. I got the Jak size New York Strip and my friend got the ribeye. The entrees come with a side salad (nothing special just some greens and dressing), a huge piece of broccoli and a potato side (baked, mashed, potato pancakes or fries). I ordered my steak medium and it came out perfect! I also ordered the sauce au poivre (peppercorn one) and it was good. There was a nice kick to it and it didn't overpower the steak. What steak house can make Ms. Nina into a convert, well for the moment at least... well the restaurant is Jak's!!!!! They are so on point with their food it isn't even funny. I came here with my girlfriends, and I didn't let my seafood eating self not order a steak at a steakhouse, so I actually did a petite filet medium rare with sauce au poivre :) HOLY MOLY it was delicious, my mouth is craving it right now, which to me is surprising. I don't crave red meat, EVER!!! So this is kind of a big deal. One of my girlfriends ordered the pork chops(bitch ahaaha), and it was F'N AWESOME! I actually liked her food better, but whatever. We split it since she felt bad for me to eat a whole petite myself. hahahha We also as a table shared a lobster mac and cheese for an appetizer, and prawns scampi... which were decent, not amazingly delicious, but decent. And at the end of dinner, our waiter told us that they have happy hour for 5 bucks for some of the items on the menu, and that they also have brunch. I have not personally been back for anything else but dinner so it's hard to say if it is worth it or not, but everytime I come back with a friend that has an expense account haha, we end up ordering the same thing. :) Gotta love those corporate expenses..... shhhh don't tell Jak's is the best steak house in seattle.. hands down read more

First, when I walk into a restaurant I listen for the presence of canned music. This is often too loud and at an sophistication level of 12-year-olds (like the Travelers, and Outback) Jak's passed the first test - no stupid music. The decor was classy and quiet. There are no cushions on the seats, no gawdy fixtures, but lots of dark wood. Warm and understated. We were seated after a short wait (no reservations - an excellent idea). The waitperson was friendly and helpful. The drinks, reasonably priced and they actually had liquor in them. I ordered the New York strip, Jak's cut and garlic mashed. The salad was served first and it was wonderful and generous. Then came the main course - a steak the size of two fists, cooked to perfection, as were the generous portions of delicious broccoli - not too limp, not too raw. The potatoes were fabulous. The waitperson, seemed to appear at exactly the right times. We shared a dessert and I ordered coffee, again wonderful on all counts. The price for this slice of heaven - very reasonable. Jak's is run by adults who know what they are doing and want the customer to return. And we will. read more

**Burger of the Month Review** This Jak's burger review is long overdue. I promise it wasn't intentional. I've just been mulling over how to rate burgers against each other that are at such different price points. I mean, Jak's costs over twice as much. Don't they have an unfair advantage? Here goes my scores: Taste: 59 of 60 points Preparation: 10 of 20 points Appearance: 8 of 10 points Burger Goodness: 8 of 10 points TOTAL POINTS: 85 Yup, Jak's gets a B-average for me, 5 points below red mill. Since this burger costs twice as much, I am holding them to a higher standard. The beef was juicy, cheddar was smooth and the bun complimented the meatiness very well. I docked most of the points from preparation and here's why: 1) I appreciated the two giant slices of tomato but they probably should have seeded them. When I picked up my burger, the bottom bun was soggy from the tomato. 2) The bacon was good, but quite floppy. Because it was floppy, it gave me an undercooked impression rather than the satisfying crisp of a bacon cooked just right. read more

Literally a happy hour; from 4:30 to 5:30p bar patrons get a price break on drinks and a steal on food. Arriving a quarter after 5 on a Monday afternoon, the restaurant had enough people to relieve you of the sketch factor but wasn't packed where seating could be an issue. The $6 happy hour martini was pretty good and helped kill the lingering plague that put me down the week before; the gin wasn't top-shelf but it wasn't rubbing alcohol either. An order of onion rings, shrimp scampi and steak bits accompanied my martini and scotch. The onion rings were the most perfect onion rings I've ever had - the batter didn't fall off after the first bite like so many others and the crunchy texture was perfect. I could've done with another helping of the shrimp and steak bits but decided on the creme brulee instead. (I really enjoy scooping up the itsy bitsy vanilla bean seeds afterwards.) Disclaimer: I often dine alone. Therefore, I've become a good resource for places where one can enjoy a meal at the restaurant's bar rather than table-side. This review is written from that particular vantage point. When judging such a place, three criteria are key: 1) The quality and variety of food served 2) The care and skill of the bartender 3) The nature of the bar's social atmosphere The bar at Jak's is excellent in all three regards. I place it as one of the best restaurants for solo dining in Seattle. First, the food. The steaks are top-notch, probably the best that you can get outside of, say, Daniel's Broiler, and at a fraction of the price - even if the fraction in question is 2/3rds. A nice option for a less expensive meal is their steak sandwich. Order it with grilled onions (not listed on the menu, but they'll happily accommodate) and a side of horseradish. It will knock your socks off. If you're one who enjoys the booze now and again, get their house martini, a veritable fishbowl of Beefeater gin served up and vermouth-free. I'd stop at one if you plan on driving, two if you plan on walking. They also have an good wine selection, both by the bottle and by the glass. The bar itself was relocated during the recent remodel and is much improved for it. Before it was tucked away in the back and seated only six. It felt like a hideaway for married men having affairs. Now it's up front and forms a nice L shape - second only to the U shape for socializing with complete strangers - and seats a tight dozen or more. I always bring a book or magazine when dining alone, and at Jak's I rarely end up reading it. West Seattlites are a friendly bunch, especially when well-fed and little bit tipsy. read more

First time trying this location even though I've been to the one in Issaquah. The two places are comparable with each not very big in size and has the same interior even with heavy wood accent. The time we came here for dinner on a Saturday night the place was totally packed and I can see why they don't accept reservations as they have an adequate amount of business. I ordered the New York steak sandwich and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The au jus that it came with was not too salty as I'm afraid of when any sandwich meal comes with it. The baguette bread had a nice consistency of not being too hard or too soft. The green onion fries were tasty with them being seasoned with sea salt. It reminds me of eating garlic fries instead these are are made with green onions. The fries were a bit too salty, but not too bad. I have to agree with my gf that the price for the food here is a bit expensive compared to other steak places I have been. I would've gladly went to The Keg and had a comparable meal with a cheaper price. Service here was kind of slow as our waiter was busy with other tables and took awhile to bring our check. Not a bad experience for my first time here, but would've been happy to just cook my own steak at home. read more

Approximately a 2 million minutes ago, I wound up at Jak's Grill. At the time, the bar was located in the back, and this space was a bit cramped. It was weird to ease past dining patrons in order to wait in the bar for service. They've remodeled since, and the layout is much better now. It's still a bit small for a steakhouse of this quality, especially one that does not take reservations, but the only way to solve that would be to knock out whatever's next door. Or take reservations. Or add a third floor. Three floors of steak. Mmmm. The steak was good, but back then, I was still ordering steak medium because I was, well, stupid. WAIT GET YOUR FINGER OFF THAT COMPLIMENT BUTTON! I know what you're about to do. You're about to hit that "just a note" compliment and let me know that yes, I am still stupid, you've read my reviews, you've seen the evidence. So let me clarify: I was ordering my steak medium because I was *stupidER*. Force of habit. I had never bothered trying it any other way; I had grown up with meat to order being cooked 'medium' because... well, that's what my parents did. Call me impressionable. Just don't hit me with a hammer to make your own impression on me. [Wow. That was a really bad pun. Moving on...] It wasn't until I joined one of my first friends in Seattle for his birthday at a Ruth's Chris that I discovered that I had been ruining a lot of good stead for a long time. He ordered his steak 'blue' and gasped in horror, disgust, surprise, and a bunch of other nouns when I ordered mine medium (and stopped the waiter and changed my order to rare). That day I discovered the difference between a good steak vs a mediocre steak. It's mostly in the quality of the beef, and somewhat the flavor of the sauce. Because honestly, mediocrity begins at medium. When they say 'well done,' they don't mean it as a compliment in any way. Oh no, that's a joke. "Well done, sir, you just destroyed a perfectly good piece of beef!" If I were a steakhouse chef, I'd have a whole bunch of sub-par cuts of beef for the medium-to-well-done crowd, because they're really not going to know the difference anyway. "Here ya go, I just dug this piece of charcoal up from my grill. Isn't that what you asked for?" Yeah, remind me not to list this review on my resume when I go for that job. Fast forward from approximately 4 years ago (2 million minutes or so) to now. I hadn't been back to this Jak's since, as I generally meet friends at the Laurelhurst location. In the meantime I've (re)experienced the Metropolitan, Ruth's Chris, El Gaucho, Daniel's. My experience is that Jak's competes with all the top steakhouses in the city by serving a top notch steak at almost half the price. Sure, the servers might not be wearing tuxedos, you might not have a wine specialist help you choose your vino, and they don't wheel a cart to your table to cut and prepare the meat in front of you. But all of that is icing, really. I brought my business partners here, and several things happened: 1) I had their special skewers and prawns, which I never do, as I prefer a huge slab of beef that I can take 3/4 home and munch on for the next three days. This gave me enough protein to be able to finish in one sitting without feeling like a gluttonous pig. It came with a jalapeno sauce to dip both the beef and the prawns in, and holy crap that shit was good!! 2) I drank wine, which is normal, but then we drank scotch from their impressive scotch menu for dessert. I don't remember which I had now, but it was very very smoky. Nice, but as my appreciation for scotch grows, I'm finding I am liking scotch from one of the other regions. 3) I didn't order the "Flying Saucer" which is basically a combination of garlic mashed potatoes and the potato pancake. It's not on the menu, you have to know about it to ask for it. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle! GI JOE! (shameless plug for my band, Stay Tuned). I had a baked potato instead, and loved it. My partners had garlic mash and fries (another not-on-the-menu combo possibility), and loved their mash. And their fries. 4) We ordered two desserts, instead of just one. And finished them both. One was the chocolate cake option, the other was a fruit crisp. Both were yummy. By the time we finished those, I did feel like a gluttonous pig. 5) We were seated almost immediately, and the staff was very friendly and continued to wait on us and make sure we were totally satisfied even though we sat there discussing the future of our business past closing. This earned them 2 of the stars. The dinner was where they lost me. The caesar salad was mighty disappointing, with its very bitter dressing. But the big deal for me was the filet mignon. It was almost inedible. More than half of this piece of meat ended up on the side of the plate because it was gristle. Big fatty chunks. On a filet! Also, the flavor just wasn't there. No special seasoning or hot buttery goodness. This subtracted 2 stars. The last star I gave them was for the dessert. We had a big hot chocolate chip cookie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. This thing almost gave me tears of joy. It was that good. Best Steakhouse in Seattle. Period. This place outshines all of the other fancy steakhouses in Seattle (The Met, El Gaucho, Brooklyn, etc.) easily in both food and service. Way more bang for your buck and I feel the food is more consistent. The service has been impeccable every single time I've dined there (around 6 or 8). I've taken everyone I know there and is a great place for a fancy night out with an out-of-town guest or family member. Also great for an evening celebration (birthday, etc.). Everything I've had has been AMAZING, but here are my standouts: Steaky steaky steak (any cut - amazing. From filet to Delmonico, all good!) Oh - and they KNOW how to cook a steak correctly! No overdone steak here! The Brunch (don't miss it; you will be sorry!) The Potato Pancakes (oh my goodness yummy cheesy awsomeness!) The Burger (definitely a contender for best burger in Seattle) The Broccoli (I don't know how they broccoli that big, but it's really tasty!) And I'll just mention the brunch again for good measure. Go ahead - give me a salad, sourdough bread and butter, and a baked potato with every thing on it too and don't forget to grill me some veggies too. All for $34.95? what is there really to complain about? I've been to all 3 locations of Jak's Grill and they all always give great consistent service paired with great consistent food. I was surprised to know that the steaks aren't Prime grade beef but rather choice cuts. However - they must be hand selected choice cuts that barely missed the prime grading because it's so juicy, so perfectly grilled, so delicate and delicious. The setting here is small just like all the other locations - it's always packed but always worth the wait. read more

It's hard to remember an America that wasn't consumed by fear and guilt, but there are a few places in Seattle that still evoke a very retro sense of shameless ambition for corporeal pleasure and entitled opulence. This Jak's is one of them. Forget that all your friends have gone vegan. Leave the war in Oceania at the door. Just revel for a singular hour in the dark wood and meat smoke, and let the ghost of Tip O'Neill drool a thousand besotted blessings upon your fleecy head. Not all Jak'ses are like this---in fact, not all seats in this Jaks are. The University Village Jak's, for example, has more of a strip mall feel, and even the second floor of this Jak's radiates a synthetic '80s vibe. But if you can luck into one of the high wood booths on the first floor, a prime delmonico and a dry martini can bootstrap you into a very '90s sense of shameless collusion, red-meat religion, and unbridled optimism. Ask for the ancho-seasoned prawns as an appetizer for the full-decadent experience. You'll pay a decent price for this transportation--$30 to $40 for a full-size steak and side. But play your cards right and you can leave with a doggy box that, in its peppery meaty goodness, will remind you (yes, even in the watery light of the next Seattle morning) that a swaggering future is a once and future possibility. read more

I've been here for dinner 4 or 5 times and done brunch twice. My wife and I once ordered a 21oz t-bone steak to share, but they brought out a 46oz. We had no idea it was the wrong steak, and could only eat about half of it. We kept going on about how enormous it was! When the bill came out we were completely shocked at the price. They were gracious about it and only charged us for the less expensive steak. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but they handled it fairly well. I know it's a steak house, and I went for dessert! I guess it's my own fault?! My husband and I had dinner in a sushi restaurant, and then we wanted some real dessert. We decided to go to Jak's. We figured that even though it's a steak house, it can't go wrong with a cup of coffee and some cheesecake etc. Coffee tasted like water, and it was luke warm. Creme Brulee was cold and "old"! I was appalled! Cheese cake was mint flavored, and it was not dense like what a NY cheese cake should be like. Oh well, it didn't say it was NY style. I can let that one go. But, cold creme brulee and luke warm watered down coffee had no excuses. The service was horrible! No host was at the door to take us in for almost 10 minutes, and the waitress didn't even bother to ask how everything was and didn't explain to me the cheese cake was going to be mint flavored. Because of the bad dessert experience, we will never go back to try their meat! Stick to the ones we know--Metropolitan Grill has the best steak in town!!! read more
