We tried this place for the first time when camping near Tehachapi. Great food and service.

We came in for my father's 70th birthday. It's a cute little place w nice atmosphere. If I lived there I can totally see myself hanging at the bar all the time. Pricing: At lunch a bottle of wine, ribs, and the special of the day (beef dip sandwich) was $60 including tip. So it's pretty reasonable. Food: The ribs were great (they came w a soup or salad; I chose the caesar. I'm picky about caesar; I like it to be flavorful and this was probably store bought general caesar without anchovy). dad seemed to really like his sandwich and the fries were perfectly crisp. They were generous portions and It came out pretty quickly too. Service: Our server needed training; he didn't seem to know anything about the specials. Nice guy just not informative. Overall: i was bummed they didnt do anything for my dad's birthday. Otherwise, I may go back again to try the foods that made it into the bakersfield Californian! read more

We've been going to Jake's around once a year for almost ten years and we're always surprised to see some of the very sharply negative reviews for Jake's. My wife and I both had a very memorable steak dinner the first time we were there sometime around 2006 and the quality hasn't changed as far as we can tell. She's gluten intolerant and long before knowledge of gluten allergies were well known they were very helpful in helping us figure out what she can and can't have on the menu. We've seen it busy before and it is packed. The difference between a lazy night and a busy night is so drastic that I'd imagine any error in scheduling would lead to a rough night for all involved. You can say this about any place, but maybe it's even more wise to visit Jake's on a quiet night. We've had all varieties of steaks there from the prime rib to the sirloin to the blackened flat iron steak. All have been among the best steaks we've ever had. I do believe that a lot of people are having the opposite experience that we've been having, but I'd gander that Jake's is much better than it's Yelp rating. It's probably the classiest joint in town and it's fairly expensive so expectations must be high going there so everyone who has a bad experience might be extra likely to voice their displeasure. read more

So, the great road trip of 2015 commenced on a toasty Friday, with Kingman, AZ being the destination for that first day. We awoke rudely by an ostensibly misbehaving fire alarm at 4:50 AM, a full ten minutes before our clock radio was scheduled to wake us up. But of course, I was already awake, due to the intense level of excitement I have for these trips. Strange freeways! Unknown towns! Interesting and varied restaurants! Opportunities for Yelp reviews galore! So, after we took care of business in our hometown, we hit the road, getting out of the Bay Area without any incident. Made a Starbucks stop in Livermore, then proceeded along that great California viaduct known as I-5. Apart from some roadwork near Kettleman City, it was without incident, and we found ourselves getting off in Buttonwillow to approach Bakersfield via Highway 58. I'm sure Bakersfield has many fine residents and places to see, but damn was it an ugly day there. Too much smog, traffic and chain restaurants inspired us to continue straight through town and up east of Highway 99 to scale the Tehachapi Mountains, arriving in its namesake town near the pass summit. After wading through a series of rather uninspiring strip malls, we were able to locate downtown, parked, and walked around looking for a place to eat. After dissing a rather forlorn-looking Mexican joint, we found ourselves at Jake's. When we walked in we were at first concerned - there was but a single row of tables for two - and there were only three such tables, including one with a fiftysomething guy trying to hit on a twentysomething waitress. Fortunately, the hostess showed us to our table, in a second, more welcoming set of tables (and I should point out that Jake's also has a rather sizable dining area). Our waitress was friendly and eager, if a bit nervous. She knew when to take our order, and refilled my drink in a timely manner. I ordered the Aloha Chicken, which is chicken dipped in plum sauce, accompanied by rice pilaf and tasty vegetables. It also comes with salad and bread, the latter of which was at first forgotten to be presented, but the waitress did correct that oversight, and produced a platter full of steamy dough with melted butter. All in all, between the wife and me, we spent but about $30. Not too shabby an option! read more

We travel through tehachapi every year. We never stop. This time we stayed over night. A Bakersfield native suggested jakes. I ordered the kobe burger because I felt too bad to order anything else when gran-mammy was treating. I'm not a fan of restaurant burgers, so it was with great hesitation I ordered this on. Best restaurant burger I've ever had. Really fresh all the way around. Everyone in our group had good food. Note: the menu states they have an agreement with a local ranch, thus, supposedly, having excellent meat. read more

We spent the night in Tehachapi on our way home from Las Vegas and we were looking for somewhere to have a nice dinner. Checked Yelp and found Jake's Steakhouse, confirmed with the hotel that it would be a good choice and made a reservation. We were seated at a nice booth. The restaurant was busy, soon one of the wait staff stopped at our table and told us our server was swamped so she would take our drink orders. Shortly after another staff member stopped by with water and told us the specials and asked if we would like to order a basket of bread for $5. We said yes and were glad we did! She brought it fairly quickly, nice warm, delicious bread with butter! One of the ladies brought our cocktails then another stopped and said she would be taking over our table as our server was so busy. Her name was Sara and she gave us excellent service! 3 of us had steaks (sirloin, filet, and hangar) and one had ribs. We all enjoyed our meals so much everything was fantastic! We were so impressed with how all of the waitstaff worked together to make sure was had great service! Will definitely come back when we're in the area. read more

We went here as an early Father's Day dinner on a Friday evening. It was a beautiful drive from Lancaster to Tehachapi. Cute little city it's downtown area is absolute gorgeous. Jake's Steakhouse is very intimate and you must make sure to have reservations. We have the spinach artichoke dip which was pretty good. Followed by homemade clam chowderFor the main course we both had the 14 ounce can cut prime rib. Mine was an end cut and his was medium rare. Both cooked perfect and oh my God the best prime rib we've had in such a long time. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. It came with green beans and squash that were cooked and seasoned. I had a baked potato and he had homemade augratin potatoes. For dessert we split a mini lime tart which was really tasty. What an excellent meal. I feel it was well worth $100 cost us for dinner. We can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. Can't say enough good things about that prime rib absolutely meeting. Excellent wait staff and a very nice comfortable atmosphere. In Tehachapi on my way to Arizona and hungry as hell, I passed Jake's on my way to the hotel and pulled in with no reservation AND my dog Betty, a big girl who is unfortunately the undeserving recipient of a shit ton of breed bias! The cheery hostess seated us on the patio without blinking an eye. Our server was quick to bring water and menus, stayed a minute to chat, and made sure we were happy during the meal. We shared the half rack of baby back ribs and those 5 ribs were more than enough to satisfy me AND Betty, and she's got a big appetite. The sauce was great, just enough tang to keep it interesting, and not the usual cloying sweet stuff. The food was perfectly prepared, the service was great, and the customized tequila drink I requested was delivered without a fuss. The experience was so good that I made it a point to eat there again on my way back to the Bay Area. If you are in Tehachapi, eat at Jake's. You won't be sorry! read more

Much to my dismay, I'm writing a less-than stellar review on this steakhouse. Its iconic of Tehachapi, a small community compared to its much larger neighbors Bakersfield and Lancaster; eatery options are limited, and competitive. I will try to be as honest as possible in this review, as little weight as it carries (lacking that fabulous little star of clout next to my name). The atmosphere and decor may have been preferable a couple of decades ago, but it is, in my opinion, quite outdated and much in need of a makeover. The layout doesn't really seem to compliment the atmosphere, and compounding the problem is the lighting...I feel like I am eating in secret (shhhh...). The food seemed to be a hit and miss, and by that I mean a 50/50. While my husband enjoyed his steak, he did not enjoy the mashed potatoes, which had so much garlic you'd think you were warding off vampires. I liked my sides, which were mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. But I had a beef with my beef (clever pun *pat on the back*). I asked for medium, which I know means red, I like that. But what I got was so rare it stood up by itself on my plate and did a jig. I sent it back and what I got back was a piece of filet mignon that was overcooked. I'm disappointed in that. Like, my options were either, still alive or burned at the stake. What I can say is this, the staff were outstandingly pleasant, and our server was very chipper and kind. Despite the food being hit and miss, the staff were spot on and well trained. Perhaps the chef was just having a rough day, as we all do, and I may return in the future where my current rating for this steakhouse may change, for better or for worse. Jake's is good. I like the servers and love the flatiron cut. It's cooked simply with sautéed onions a d mushrooms and always perfectly seasoned. The baked potato and veggies are simple too but I like that. I go to Jake's knowing that I'm going to get an honest and very, well cooked meal and I love that. read more

This classic, comfortable steak restaurant left us wanting more. Contrary to other reviews, our parties experience with the staff was very positive. The restaurant is clean and seemingly well maintained. The facility appears to be able to handle larger parties and our group of 8 was managed flawlessly. For this review, it's all about the steak. The choice of a $30 Ribeye had high expectations that fell woefully short. Cooked well, the Harris Ranch farmed steak was tough. In all fairness, did not bring it to the servers attention. Asked around the table how well the others liked their food and met with average responses. Salmon, Prime Rib (get here early or they may run out), veggie plate, Top Sirloin and a Filet all occupied our table. The wine list had diverse choices but nothing stood out as upper shelf. Maybe it was a one off but the bones of this restaurant and the professionalism of its staff oozed classic steakhouse. It just seemed to fall off when it came to the food. For the money, expected a bit more. Suggestion is when the steak comes in off the delivery truck, the owner or chef be a bit more demanding in the cuts of meat they serve. read more

First of all, this location isn't Bel Air or Beverly Hills. but their attitude and prices beg to differ. Why would I need to request bread and yet others were served bread? My son ordered a Old Fashion drink and it was extremely weak/watered down. We sent it back for a new one and we really believe they sent the same one back. My son also ordered a Prime Rib Medium Rare, when the waiter placed his plate on the table, I can clearly see it was more of a Medium Well, no pink/red whatsoever! When we asked to redo his order, the waiter returned saying they had no more Prime Rib? This is a Saturday Night @ 6:30PM! I ordered a Ribeye Steak Medium. That was all good for the exception I thought it was not a Ribeye Steak. Ribeye should have not to much fat but just enough fat for the juiciness and flavor. My "Ribeye Steak" was way to lean throughout, just a piece of meat without any flavor? Zero fat, only the edges of the Steak was acceptable to enjoy. All our dishes came out of the kitchen warm, not hot. Even tables around us was returning their orders because they came out warm. One lady next to us just out right canceled her order! I don't mind paying good money for good food, it cost us $140.00 for the table of 3 of us plus tip. Went to Jake's for what we were hoping would be a nice anniversary dinner; could not believe that servers were not wearing masks on June 19th during Covid-19 as cases were skyrocketing in Kern County. Went up to the front desk to tell the receptionist that we were cancelling our reservations because the servers were not wearing face masks and left! I went there today and my family and I had the best attention and food, ever! Firstly, we were greeted by our waitress who was really nice with us. We got to choose the table we wanted and she immediately got to our table with the menu. We ordered 2 peach (warn you; it's unsweetened) and 1 raspberry iced teas, which was delicious, I loved it! You get either a soup (today they had lasagna and rib eye) or a garden salad (Romaine or Cesar). Both soups were really good and the salads are good. I had the Alfredo Pasta with shrimp- veeeery good! My mom the Penne San Remo which has sun dried tomatoes and artichoke. Pretty good, too. If you want a dessert, our waitress came, showed and explained to us every dessert they had. It was a tough choice, but a delicious one. I can assure you, I will be coming back! read more

Off the beaten track in Tehachapi, but worth the stop. Friendly and accomodating, as are most things in Tehachapi. Appetizer: Had the potato skins with cheese, sour cream, and chives. Pretty good...needed seasoning something awful, but once salt and peppered, they were fairly good. Basic. But they were also free with a coupon from the Holiday Inn, so what's to complain about??? The St Louis Ribs were tasty. They were a bit smoky with a touch of heat. The meat was tender enough, but by the end of the meal had gotten a tad chewy. They came with sweet potato fries which were screaming for some sort of seasoning. Salt? Pepper? Chili powder? Something to save their little souls from being bland. The Porterhouse was thick and delicate, with the fragrance of garlic hovering. I ordered medium rare...it came pretty rare. But the meat virtually melted in one's mouth. The garlic mashes potatoes on the side I didn't quite understand. They were garlicky...yum...but there was no sign I could see of cream or milk added to them. Basically it was a crushed baked potato with garlic. Now, it still tasted quite good, but I expected something different. The veggies on the side were to be ignored. The prices were quite reasonable...two dinners and drinks only about $50. The portions were generous and the meat was overall well-cooked. Would probably eat here again, though I was disappointed after visiting the ostrich farm in Stallion Springs that there was no ostrich on the menu. read more

My Husband and I stopped here on our way home from our Anniversary. It was surprisingly great for a small restaurant that we did not expect to find. We ordered wine and coconut shrimp as a starter. I was going to order soup with my meal but didn't because my Husband said I would get too full. It was a bell pepper and gorgonzola cheese soup that sounded amazing. She not only brought us the shrimp, but also a small sample of the soup that I did not order but wanted to try. First off great service, appetizer amazing, wine was great. We both ordered ribeye. My Husband's was perfect, he ordered med/rare. I ordered medium and received a well done steak. Only reason for no 5 star. Seasoning was perfect so I kept the steak even though she offered a new one. Gave us free dessert which was the lava cake. Amazing! Overall glad we stopped here. Great end to our vacation and Anniversary. Will be back again for next road trip. A better meal might be had at Denny's. (Insert sad face.) We brought my family here for a nice Birthday dinner celebration. The time before was ok as we had ordered prime rib, but they were out of it this visit. So we all ordered something else on the menu. Out of 6 people, none of us were satisfied with our food. The Short rib pasta bolognese was worth a 1/4 of the marked price. The sauce was crap, the pasta was crap, and there was no way to tell the meat was short rib because it tasted and felt just like ground beef from a frost bitten freezer. The ribeye steaks were not quality marbling and what was presumably edible was unfortunately stringy. The angus burger was a complete disappointment. They forgot the cheese we paid extra for, the bun was stale, the lettuce was wilted, the patty was not juicy, but I can give credit for the fries as they were fresh and tasty. The lasagna lacked flavor; it tasted like they layered cardboard in marinara sauce and tossed cheese over it. The owner should hire more skillful chefs if they want their food to match their prices. I give two stars solely dedicated to the friendly and accommodating waitress because she was busting her butt. read more

Two groups of friends met in Tehachapi from different adventures and went to dinner at Jake's. It was about half full at 7:30pm (I didnt realize Tehachapi shuts down around 8pm) Anyway, service was a little laid back, but nothing bad. I had the Prime Rib, King Cut and a baked potato, with a Cesear's Salad. Since the menu noted they used Harris Ranch beef, I counted on it being good...and I wasn't disappointed. Other's in the party had the Flat Iron Steak which they said was good, and someone had the Halibut, but I don't remember their impressions off hand. There was a bit of a commotion from the party next to us, who complained that our table was served food before theirs, even though they had placed their order first. If I wasn't tired, or had had an alcoholic beverage, I may have said something back to them....but thought better of it. I thought out service was great....even though their service might have been a bit slower. I split a check with a friend who had the same prime rib, and it came to $72 for the both of us, athough he shorted me on the tip...but that is his fault, not Jakes! read more

While traveling on my way to Vegas, we stopped in Jakes after seeing the great reviews and comments and was very impressed! Darlene served us and was highly attentive, intuitive and friendly. My friend had the macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi and it was phenomenal!, I had the Ahi salad paired with avacado and their wasabi dressing and was very pleased. Darlene also recommend a fantastic glass of Chardonnay to complete a great meal. Will definitely return if I ever find myself that way again read more

I went on the reviews i read. I was disappointed! On a positive note the dinner salad was good and the waitresses were good. I ordered Filet Minion and my wife ordered the fish and chips. My steak was really nasty like it was boiled or cooked in the microwave then placed on the grill. The fish and chips were the worst we ever had, maybe because the cod wasn't cooked all the way through. The bill for both our meals with one beer and one iced tea was 55 bucks. The steak wasn't worth 30 plus tax!!! My wife left nauseated and I also left with an upset stomach also nauseated over the price I just paid. We recently had the good fortune to spend the night in Tehachapi , where we had dinner at Jake's Steak House. Jake's came highly recommended by several people staying at our hotel. One person told us he had never had a steak anywhere as good as the one he had at Jake's. My wife had grilled salmon, while I had the 14 ounce rib eye steak. We both had salad, baked potatoes and vegetables. Everything was absolutely outstanding. Although the restaurant became pretty busy, we didn't have too long a wait for our food. It came from the kitchen hot and stayed hot down to the last bite. If the food was great, the service was equally so. Our waitress, Darlene, was friendly from the minute we walked in, made sure she was frequently checking to see if we needed anything, and was simply awesome. She recommended a Russian Mule for a drink before dinner and was right on with her opinion on it as well. Darlene made the dinner one to remember with her wonderful personality, smile, and conversations. We don't have too many occasions to drive through and stay overnight in Tehachapi, California, but we will certainly eat at Jake's again should we find ourselves in that area of CA. We ate lunch there today. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Salad. The chicken was clearly cubes from a bag and there was absolutely nothing Cajun about it. When we first ate there two years ago it was amazing. But, the chefs changed and so did the food. The fish is always a frozen, dry "square". The Ahi Tuna Salad is still delicious. Always friendly when you walk in, but quality has gone down hill in the last two years. So sad, especially when there are few fine dining experiences left in Tehachapi. read more

This is officially our go-to. My husband had the prime rib and I had the fillet; both were fantastic. My fillet was so tender, thick, and flavorful. My husbands prime rib was equally delicious and the dipping sauce was amazing. The vegetables were grilled to perfection. I can't wait to go back and try their pasta and seafood! I have to say this is one of the worst steakhouses I've ever been to. I've given it a couple tries, The 1st time my steak had no flavor The whole plate was kind of bland. Not what I thought it would be like I had heard The stakes were delicious but not true. Then I went back for a special occasion, And I ordered the prime rib, The prime rib was so overcooked it had a rainbow effect on the meat, So without a word I just got up paid for my check Without eatting my meal, Now I drive all the way out of town to go have a good steak because there is not one this town I wish there was and hopefully soon. read more
