    "Shrimp shumai"
    frances m.

Oh, dear. This used to be our favorite Chinese place north of Portland and south of Rockland, but our takeout tonight was BAD. Like, real, real bad. They don't even know how to fold a dumpling. Look at this "shrimp shumai." Clearly, the folks in the kitchen have no idea what they are doing when it comes to Chinese food. Yikes. Bummer.

We passed this restaurant many times but never went in because of the exterior appearance. We thought it was probably purely take out. We recently went in to eat after reading reviews on Yelp. What a pleasant surprise. The interior is very nice and very clean ( as were the restrooms). There were three of us and we all liked everything we ordered. We tried the Korean beef, Mongolian chicken , stir fried teriyaki chicken, and various appetizers. Service was very good. Well worth a visit! The exterior is drab and not very inviting, but don't let that stop you from giving the place a try.

    Non-deveined shrimp.

Yesterday i picked up a 70.00 take out order and had a draft beer while waiting. I noticed as i sat at the take out location that the young lady pouring the beer only took a little from the draft and then poured old beer from a pitcher to fill the glass. trying to save the old beer that came out as foam when keg was tapped. the boss , another young lady showed the girl how to swirl the beer in the pitcher to add life. Bad practice , needs to stop, makes for flat and bad tasing beer. not sure how long the beer from the pitcher was there before being added to my glass. The girls knew to turn their back to customers while doing this so it could not be seen. Sushi is great, service is great fix the bad beer habit. thanks

Had to get the sushi "yacht" for two. But the nigiri was kind of weird. The rice tasted warm. Not like, perfect temperature from the hands of the itamae, but weird tepid lukewarm sitting around rice. The sashimi didn't seem so fresh to me, and sushi grade quality was questionable. The roll also seemed to be at an odd temperature. Overall I was rather disappointed. The best part for me was the sake. But my date (outside of her comfort zone) did seem to like it overall. I don't want to be negative, but this is definitely a "won't visit again" for me.

My wife and I shared three maki: vegetable tempura, inari (sweet marinated tofu), and avocado dream. We would love to return to try some of their many other vegetarian options. The vegetable tempura roll, which contained broccoli, green bean, sweet potato, onion tempura, and sweet brown glaze, was probably my favorite. This roll was huge, so open wide! The avocado dream was a close second, with sweet potato, avocado, and cream cheese. It's tempura fried with a truffle mayo on top, which gave it a really unique flavor! Though not as fancy as the two specialty maki, the inari maki was delicious too. The service was prompt and the kitchen was efficient, so we had plenty of time to get to our next destination without worrying. I'd love to return if I'm ever back in Brunswick!

We all got combos. The General Tso's chicken was the nicest surprise - nice quality chicken breast meat. I enjoyed my Thai Fried rice, however the flavors were a bit dull, however, I still enjoyed it. The Vegetable Gyoza was nice and flavorful. The dumplings were plump and delicious. I'm not paying $25 for old spinach that you're calling wilted. We saw a little farmers market thing going on in a little park on the walk over to Joshua's but it had ended by the time we realized our mistake and tried to walk back. Then we spot this little hole in the wall. It looked like it was once a gas station Asian food restaurant. The front of the building read: Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. We like all of those things so we headed over and took a chance. They no longer offer table service, but there was a sign that said you're welcome to eat your food inside, so we did. The menu was like any other Asian restaurant, all the staples were there, the lunch specials that include your eggroll and soup, choice of fried rice or white rice. So we ordered a couple lunch specials. And two are surprised it was insanely good. It wasn't like fine dining Asian food, it was more like comfort Asian food. My pad Thai was real pad Thai, it was sweet and it was sour, it was the spice level I asked for! It did not taste like spicy dried peanut butter rubbed all over rice noodles. There was a fantastic sauce to it. The miso soup I ordered was light and refreshing, yet comforting, like something your mom would make. The outside of this building looks like it's going to make you sick, ignore that part and go inside.

One of the biggest changes has been the complete turnover of the staff. All of the original people who made the place welcoming and enjoyable seem to be gone, and the difference has absolutely shown in both the service and overall experience. The food quality has become inconsistent and, at times, marginal compared to what originally brought us in. We've also dealt with repeated order mistakes, inattentive service, and an overall lack of attention to detail during several recent visits. Everyone understands that restaurants can have an off night, but this has become a pattern rather than an exception. What was especially disappointing was that we took the time to privately contact ownership about these concerns and never received any response at all. We weren't looking for compensation or special treatment, just acknowledgment and some indication that customer feedback mattered. Kume had a lot of promise when it first opened, which makes this frustrating to write. Unfortunately, based on our recent experiences, the quality control, consistency, and customer service are no longer close to where they once were.

I wanted to dine in, which was fine, though my food was still served in takeout containers. I ordered the "cauliflower pop" appetizer, tekka maki (tuna sushi), and tombo (a sushi roll containing cold albacore tuna, shiso, scallion, and ginger). The cauliflower app was fried and battered and covered in a sweet/spicy sauce very much like a General Tso sauce. Unfortunately I think what should have been a crispy texture was very soft and mushy, probably due to the sauce, and maybe how it was packed in a closed plastic container (despite it being served to a customer only a few feet away in the small dining room). The sushi was much better, both rolls being very tasty. The tombo roll had a particularly interesting and fresh taste to it. Yelp asks that a reviewer cover food, service, and ambiance.
