    "Shrimp shumai"
    frances m.

Oh, dear. This used to be our favorite Chinese place north of Portland and south of Rockland, but our takeout tonight was BAD. Like, real, real bad. They don't even know how to fold a dumpling. Look at this "shrimp shumai." Clearly, the folks in the kitchen have no idea what they are doing when it comes to Chinese food. Yikes. Bummer.

We passed this restaurant many times but never went in because of the exterior appearance. We thought it was probably purely take out. We recently went in to eat after reading reviews on Yelp. What a pleasant surprise. The interior is very nice and very clean ( as were the restrooms). There were three of us and we all liked everything we ordered. We tried the Korean beef, Mongolian chicken , stir fried teriyaki chicken, and various appetizers. Service was very good. Well worth a visit! The exterior is drab and not very inviting, but don't let that stop you from giving the place a try.

    Non-deveined shrimp.

I can't believe how good this place is, a hidden gem. Everything is fresh and perfectly flavored, not oversauced. I highly recommend.

I ordered through DoorDash and the food came right on time and nice and hot. I ordered the General Tso Dinner Combination. The chicken was packed with flavor and delicious and is some of the best I've had around, I would definitely recommend this dish as it left me very satisfied! The rice and egg roll that came with it were decent. I also got the Boneless Spare Ribs which were delicious and the steamed dumplings which were decent. Not the best Chinese I've had but I will definitely be going back there since it's probably the best spot in the area if you don't want to drive all the way to Portland for Chinese food.

Has the food flavors tipped the scale towards the bland side? Maybe - one visit won't tell - but we're over spiced and seasoned anyway - blandness might just be what we need for a stint, give the tired taste buds a little vacay. My Pork Chop Suey did fit that a bit - but it saved San Francisco - way back when it was worth saving - now I wish no less than a deep dive into the dystopian abyss of Atlantis upon it's highways and byways. Inside is a fair attempt to recreate the Chinese experience thru appearance - there was effort taken to capture a little imagination of us Americans. The cusine reminded me a bit of my grandmother's Hungarian goulash -red & white onion & green and red bell peppers (it's available in Beef) all of which could have been cooked a bit longer to release their natural juices. In slight contrast with Lo Mein, Chinese foods more common dish, Chop Suey is made with rice or noodles - Americanized with the multitude of additional ingredients pea pods, chopped carrots, mushrooms & sprouts in a sweet thin glaze lurking below and giving a little float to the rice I poured in - a little pinchy blast of salt and lil red pepper flake with the cooking might just have been seasoning enough.

We all got combos. The General Tso's chicken was the nicest surprise - nice quality chicken breast meat. I enjoyed my Thai Fried rice, however the flavors were a bit dull, however, I still enjoyed it. The Vegetable Gyoza was nice and flavorful. The dumplings were plump and delicious. Inside, was dark and didn't look like the dining area was open. When we walked in, we were acknowledged our order was processed and we were on our way. It was a very transactional experience. it's nice there was a parking lot. I might visit again, if someone is unable to eat MSG.

I'm not paying $25 for old spinach that you're calling wilted. We saw a little farmers market thing going on in a little park on the walk over to Joshua's but it had ended by the time we realized our mistake and tried to walk back. Then we spot this little hole in the wall. It looked like it was once a gas station Asian food restaurant. The front of the building read: Chinese, Japanese and Thai food. We like all of those things so we headed over and took a chance. They no longer offer table service, but there was a sign that said you're welcome to eat your food inside, so we did. The menu was like any other Asian restaurant, all the staples were there, the lunch specials that include your eggroll and soup, choice of fried rice or white rice. So we ordered a couple lunch specials. And two are surprised it was insanely good. It wasn't like fine dining Asian food, it was more like comfort Asian food. My pad Thai was real pad Thai, it was sweet and it was sour, it was the spice level I asked for! It did not taste like spicy dried peanut butter rubbed all over rice noodles. There was a fantastic sauce to it. The miso soup I ordered was light and refreshing, yet comforting, like something your mom would make. The outside of this building looks like it's going to make you sick, ignore that part and go inside.

Works fine and saves a tip if you think that way. I ordered the Pad Thai dinner special and was pleasantly surprised to find it also comes with a couple of choices. In my case I added pork fried rice and an egg roll. A lot of places don't offer rice with noodle dishes. The egg roll was excellent and the rice and pad Thai were fine. I thought the pad Thai would have benefited from having more veggies with it and a bit more sauce, but it was certainly a generous serving and tasted fine. My wife went with chicken and broccoli and also thought it was fine. We thought restaurants have to offer tap water, but when we ordered water we received bottles. So it was all good, and there was enough available that we had a second meal of leftovers, one way to help defray the higher cost of eating out these days.

It was the late 8Os and Chinese buffets were in their infancy in Queens - it was an exciting day to know that we're going out to eat that evening to my parents favorite Chinese buffet. They basically half starved us during the day with our ritual of a banana for breakfast and another fruit or poorly prepared vegetable for lunch. They're always looking for a deal, which I believe was part of their attraction. Personally, I've not had many new memories of buffets of any cuisine - they're always getting peppered with heath violation papers - this was my thinking. Driving hungry and teetering on desperate to just sit with a hot cup of tea and decompress the body and brain from a trying week - the neon sign and ample parking had me turn around and pull in, enter and was seated. I expected somebody to be tucking egg rolls into their boots and all out brawls at the shrimp tray, none of which occured. There were some mysteries rolls, not much shellfish - it wasn't a seafood buffet, yet there were underwater representatives available. Ya know -- I think its a law to have fish and turtles in the foyer at those establishments as I reflect back upon a seafood buffet experience or two. Four double sided, well lit serving stations. I started with a scoop of what I believe was a Chinese roasted imitation crab souffle - green beans for a good luck chaser. A stick thru a piece of white meat (perhaps turkey) hit my plate with a Clunk as did the breaded chicken so I created a soft landing zone with beef fried rice and lol mein noodles for future additions. So I began to eat and I watched some people waiting for new trays to arrive - this is a strange optic for me - I mean, the particular item of interest to you is worth just standing there - in wait - hoping to get first dibs? The place wasn't very busy, personally, I'd wait at my table - Weird. First plate was fresh and hot and unhealthy - it went down quickly and plate number two had a sauced rib, a chicken wing more green beans and sliced pepper thingies with a sweet and sour eggplant I believe. Needing a flavor punch I foolishly a dropped a half a ladle of some super spicy mustard that wrestled my nostrils with blowtorch intensity, which the jasmine tea doused out quite well. Then I saw a banana at the far table and freaked out a bit due to the scars of the Late 80s Bananas // Chinese Buffet Memory Synergies - so I stayed away from that area which also included the desserts - but I didn't see the self serve sift ice cream machine equipt with the lever giving you the maniacal power to create ice cream lines over your cookies, so that was out. That's basically it -- $17.75 out the door.
