    "Shrimp shumai"
    frances m.

Oh, dear. This used to be our favorite Chinese place north of Portland and south of Rockland, but our takeout tonight was BAD. Like, real, real bad. They don't even know how to fold a dumpling. Look at this "shrimp shumai." Clearly, the folks in the kitchen have no idea what they are doing when it comes to Chinese food. Yikes. Bummer.

We passed this restaurant many times but never went in because of the exterior appearance. We thought it was probably purely take out. We recently went in to eat after reading reviews on Yelp. What a pleasant surprise. The interior is very nice and very clean ( as were the restrooms). There were three of us and we all liked everything we ordered. We tried the Korean beef, Mongolian chicken , stir fried teriyaki chicken, and various appetizers. Service was very good. Well worth a visit! The exterior is drab and not very inviting, but don't let that stop you from giving the place a try.

    Non-deveined shrimp.

Close to more bars for extra drinks, easy to run into other friends. Also, it's a beautiful spot with outdoor seating in the warmer months. We opted to sit outside and enjoyed khao soi, katsu pork sandwich, and the honey soft serve. The portions are generous, as we were able to share and have leftovers. Each plate had so many great textures and flavors. We did experience a long wait between ordering, getting food, and receiving the check. It was a busy summer night so I wasn't upset, but do not plan on having a quick meal here. Get cozy, get an extra drinks and enjoy your time here. Apologies, but phone did not eat first this time-no pics!

Service: Great Food: We started off with soft serve and the seasonal earl gray outshined the house honey. The earl gray had a great flavor topped with an excellent syrup while the honey was mild and the chocolate shell didn't add anything, although the 'honeycomb' bits were delic. Crispy eggplant special - good, very small portion Pork katsu sandwich - pretty solid, interesting pickle Pad mee korat - good, small portion Value: Aside from the soft serve, the portions were very small for ~$17 price point, and the food was good but aside from the earl gray soft serve, didn't amaze to the point of paying a higher price point. Overall I did like this meal but portions were small for prices. I hope they keep the earl gray soft serve around!

They have outdoor tables if you're traveling with a dog - the place is right across from Reny's Department Store and is easy to spot with its bright yellow color. We devoured the chicken lumpia (spring rolls), the pancit bihon (Filipino noodles), and the Filipino curry dish (which was delicious). The yakitori skewers were also tasty for lunch. We came in on Saturday night knowing we would have to wait so we went to the bar. They had a special cocktail that night and it was so good I wish I could remember what it was called but you have to try whatever their specialty drink of the night is. Since we had a large party we ordered a lot because everything sounds so good so we did a bunch of Dim Sum and a few mans as well. We went with: Empire Eggrolls Lobster Rangoons Char Siu Baos Spicy Pork Belly Buns Pork Potsticks Shanghai Soup Dumplings Shu Mai Curry Udon Kung Pao Chicken Honestly everything was great but the stand outs for me were the Lobster Rangoons, Char Siu Baos, Pork Potsticks, Curry Udon, and the Kung Pao Chicken. First of Lobster Rangoons I mean how do you not. Portland Maine being Lobster Paradise this just makes sense and is a must try staple here. Just takes your normal Chinese Crab Rangoon to the next level. The Char Siu Baos where the best BBQ Pork Bun I have ever had. I know these can be hit or miss sometimes but Empire it doing it right truly the best I have had. The Pork Potsticks were also great. A top 3 dumpling I have had. I honestly wasn't expecting much but these were amazing. The Curry Udon was kind of a funny story. I said we should try this and my friends like me know it was vegan but for once that didn't bother me. This was great and so full of flavor. Plus you can't go wrong with Udon. Kung Pao Chicken is always my go to and this one takes the cake. The Chicken is lighty battered and so full of flavor. One of the best I have ever had. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything we had at Empire Chinese and I would 100% go back and do it all again. I'll end this review the way we started dinner. Lobsta Goooooonnnnsss!

Confession time: the idea of paying to cook my own dinner has never exactly screamed "great night…read moreout." Then I went to N to Tail, and now I'm considering a career in table-side grilling. The meal started with spicy cucumbers, fried eggplant, and Korean fried chicken. The cucumbers were refreshing, sweet, spicy, and dangerously addictive. The eggplant was crispy, sticky, and packed with flavor. And the fried chicken? My partner could have just eaten that alone and been happy! The four of us went all in on the largest combo platter. Short rib, ribeye, pork belly, shrimp, chicken, veggies--the grill was working overtime. The short rib ipractically melted, the ribeye was buttery perfection, and the pork belly reminded us why pork belly has such a devoted fan club. There was a brief period where my partner and I had no idea what we were doing at the grill, luckily we were with seasoned veterans of it! By the end of the meal my confidence was soaring that I could do this again! The banchan, which the server hinted at has a few sides that change time to time, kept every bite interesting The service was fantastic and so informative, and the entire experience was far more fun than I expected. We were really excited to try this spot out and chow down on a bunch of meat. We came in at 5pm and waited to be seated. The host said table for 4? I said yes. He said okay and was about to guide us but then I said oh and 2 babies. His reaction, ohhhh I don't we can accommodate your party here, sorry. I was caught off guard since I've never been to a restaurant that turned people away. I'm assuming kids/babies aren't welcomed here? There were plenty of large tables available in the front where the host stand was. I could count 4 tables on my way in, 1 or 2 of them larger tables. We were open to the grill tops or regular tables but he didn't ask us. I guess if you have kids, save the hassle and dine elsewhere. We ended up at Highrollers for the evening.
