Lost our reservation. We had reserved a table for 4 at least 2 weeks prior because we had friends visiting from out of town. Only option given was to sit at the bar. Told us the other tables all were booked. We watched as first one, then another, then another 4 top opened up. we had a 7:00PM reservation. we have an eleven month old, a four year old and I am 72 and can barely walk with a cane. At 6:51 we called the restaurant number to say we would arrive at 7:15 and received a recording saying to not leave a message and when the tone sounded the recording said the mailbox was full. When we arrived at 7:17, the owner had given away our table. She did not take any ownership for the fact that she was unreachable, or showed any compassion for our situation (e.g., that the reservation maker was driving and not able to pick up the phone, that we were managing two young children). Neither did she make any accommodations to try to right the situation. We have enjoyed the food for over a decade, but based upon the total lack of hospitality and poor communication, we will never be back and will cease recommending the restaurant to our visitors and friends. read more

If a restaurant states their hours online, on their website, that their hours are til 2.30 pm for lunch but doesn't honor that it causes some grief for people (me) who drive all the way there, a half hour drive for me and hurry to get there, walk in at 2.14 and am told "Can you come back at 4.30. We're closed". No explanation, no polite behavior. Just sass and get out. Tried calling at 2 to put an order in. No answer. Long Grain could care less about people. Very selfish behavior. read more

We live in Boston and consider ourselves foodies - this was some of the best Thai food we've ever had. I don't think I can do take-out for a long, long time. I'm just going to compare it to the awesome dishes I so, so enjoyed at Long Grain. Some things you may want to know: -Many of the starters and mains have tofu options, and the tofu is *local.* -The wide noodles used for some of the noodle dishes are *handmade.* If you're getting noodles, do include one! Our table loved the pad seaw so much that we got a second plate. -Long Grain utilizes local when they can, and you can taste it. They also have a nice long list of alcoholic bevies. -Expect specials, and get specials. -There is an option to dine-in or take-out. A surprisingly delicious experience off the main block in Camden. The restaurant is unexpectedly chic and rustic, with plenty of seating: long tables for larger groups and small tables tucked by the window. We ordered the Peek Gai Tod, a hefty portion of crispy fried chicken wings with a side of Jaew sauce. A little bit of this sauce goes a long way and it is goooooood. My husband got the spicy night market noodle soup. The sweet and sour broth was savoury and made me pucker up in a good way (that's how I like it!). I got the Kao Soi Gai, which was had a strong curry flavor, which gets advertised as Chiangmai style. I've never been to Chiangmai, but now I have all the more reason to go. While I liked my husband's main dish more than mine at the time they came out, when it came to leftovers (oh yeah, you're going to have leftovers), my dishes flavors grew with time, and tasted even better at home! I'd say the spicy night market noodle, since it's rice noodle based, is best enjoyed while fresh. This restaurant is officially on our list of recommendations for friends when they come to visit us in Portland and are making the trek further North. read more

5 stars - A birthday lunch worth traveling for We stopped into Long Grain for a birthday lunch while vacationing in Camden, and it completely lived up to the hype -- and then some. Everything we ordered was spot-on: the fried tofu was golden and crisp without being greasy, and the tom kha soup was light but layered with flavor, packed with mushrooms (a favorite of ours) and the kind of broth you want to savor slowly. The pad kemao with pork belly was the standout -- reasonably spicy and made with their signature handmade noodles that were simply perfect. Fat, silky, and just the right amount of chewy before they melted in your mouth. The pork belly added just the right hit of richness. We also had the pad see ew with chicken, a gentler, sweeter dish that was deeply comforting and ideal for someone craving classic Thai flavors without the heat. We have been coming here annually on our trips to the Camden, ME area. It is something we prioritize each year, because, it simply is the best Thai food we have had, and it is in an unexpected location. The quality has not only stayed true over the last years, but at our visit last night I would say it has somehow gotten even better! The flavors are spot on, the dining room is elevated cozy, the staff is kind and down to earth as you would expect in mid coast Maine, and the owners and chefs are always visible and available. Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time, as it can be busy during the summer season, but really that is a tribute to how good this place is! Returning to Long Grain was nostalgic. While the menu has evolved, the classics remained. Just a block off of the main drag in Camden, this place has some of the best Thai/Asian food that I have ever eaten. While getting a table isn't always easy, it's well worth the wait. I have always found the team to be extremely informed and ready to guide you toward what you might like and your desired spice level. The show stopper for me is absolutely the wide rice noodles that are incorporated into several dishes including the photo of the Chicken Pad Kemao included here. I would also recommend the mussels, coconut soup and larb from the small plates. Hard to honestly go wrong on the entrees. I will certainly be returning soon! read more

Ah, Long Grain -- where the noodles are hand-pulled and the service is hands-off. We had a reservation, which apparently meant "please wait awkwardly at the front for 10 minutes while staff avoids eye contact and we rifle through the pages on our clipboard." Okay, fine. Camden is a sleepy town; we can be patient. But after finally being seated, it was another *20 minutes* before anyone asked if we might enjoy a beverage. A tumbleweed rolled by. I aged a little. When we *did* get the drink menu (a printed-out Word doc), the draft beer list wasn't up to date -- a minor offense unless, like me, you get emotionally attached to the idea of a specific blonde ale that turns out to no longer exist. Our server seemed like they'd rather be anywhere else -- possibly in another town, or dimension. We clearly stated we were going full-on family-style feast mode, and it still took a small eternity to get side plates. Once food arrived, though? Totally worth the wait. The **mussels** were *amazing* -- briny, rich, and swimming in a broth that begged for rice. (We had to ask for it, which felt like asking for socks with shoes. Just make it a thing!) The **pad Thai** was a bit of a wallflower -- asked for medium spice and got more of a "ketchup is spicy" vibe. But the **pad see ew**? *Chef's kiss.* Smoky, chewy, savory perfection. The **night market noodle soup** was also excellent -- deep, complex broth and noodles that meant business. Water refills were on point (shoutout to the silent water ninja who kept our glasses full), but our server ghosted us halfway through the meal, never to return. Another server dropped to-go boxes like a mic drop, and after 25 minutes of playing "Where's Waldo: Check Edition," we flagged down a third staff member just to pay. We were interested in dessert... like, philosophically. But by then we were tired, irritated, and spiritually full. In short- Food? Delicious. Service? A social experiment. Ambiance? The food here is DELICIOUS. I ordered the Pad Pak and the menu doesn't tell you but it comes with jasmine rice to soak up the delicious almost broth that it comes in. You can also sub the meats easily which is very nice. The service was good, very friendly and accommodating, don't be afraid to ask for changes! The only note I have is that they do not pick up the phone, it wasn't busy when I went but they wouldn't pick up the phone when I tried calling and while I was eating not once did they reach for the phone even when not busy. We had a delicious dinner at Long Grain! The dessert was surprisingly the best part. The coconut crème brûlée over black sticky rice was heavenly! We enjoyed the green papaya salad and the pork skewers to start. We'd definitely get the skewers again! For entree's, we had the Kao Soi Gai and the Pad Kemao. Both were delicious, but the Pad Kemao, in particular, was amazing! We will definitely be back to get that again. The staff was very attentive, seemed to be working well as a team, and the dishes came out fairly quickly. However, the atmosphere was odd. It was a little cold and we could hear most of the conversation at all tables near us. They might want to consider some sound dampening techniques or an alternative seating layout. read more

3.5 stars. We had several people recommend this restaurant to us, and we happen to be staying in a hotel right across the street, so it seemed like a no brainer for us. We were able to sit at the long (shared) community table, despite not having a reservation (you need one to even sit at the bar!). The inside of the restaurant is adorable. A bookshelf separates two halves of it, filled with Asian ingredients. There used to be an Asian market inside the restaurant, but during Covid the market shut down, and now all the ingredients are just for decor! Very colorful, unique, and fun decor! Lots of different options for wines- we tried 4 white wines but they all seemed very sweet and I was not a fan of any of them. For dinner we tried the hoi mangpu (steamed mussels), pad seaw (house-made wide rice noodles with sweet soy sauce stir-fried with greens, eggs, and chicken), moo ping (pork skewers), and shishito peppers (with tuna shavings and aioli). All the dishes were tasted "good", but none wow-ed me. The steamed mussels were my favorite dish, a 10/10. The mussels were small and cooked perfectly, tender but not too soft, and were basting in a spicy coconut lemongrass broth. There is no bread or crostini served with the mussels, so I would suggest ordering some sticky rice to dip in the delicious broth. The broth was really a unique flavor, unlike any broth I've had before. It was rich from the coconut, but kept its freshness from the lemongrass, and it had a little kick to each sip. Made a reservation for this Asian restaurant on a weekend for lunch and it did not disappoint. It felt like an upscale take on common Southeast Asian food. Ordered: The fried rice with pork belly was so flavorful and had great wok flavor. The rice itself has a mild nuttiness that makes you come back for more with large pieces of white onion that constantly cleanse your palate. The wings have an excellent crunchiness, although the garlic flavor is more mild. All of the wings are flats and that's exactly how we like it. The beef salad was OK. Love the use of shallots and fresh cucumber and lettuce. Their chili oil is extra, but has a well rounded, balanced flavor and spiciness to complement the food. First I want to say the food was delicious. I would recommend this place solely for the ambiance of the restaurant and the flavors that come out of the kitchen. I would recommend this restaurant again, but only for take-out. Unfortunately the service at long grain gives pause. We were the first customers to walk in for dinner at 4:30pm on a Tuesday. After a minute, the hostess asked if we had reservations, we did not (EVERY seat in the restaurant was open). She scanned the restaurant, humming, as if she was performing calculus to fit us in. Her grace was able to fit us in to a two-top table, shocker. After being seated, it took easily 20 minutes to be waited on. One other group trickled in, and overall the service was painfully slow here, with little to no follow-up during dinner. The vibe: Arrogant. It was high season when I was at Long Grain over the weekend. It was pretty busy but lucky enough to get a reservation for a very early dinner. Plan well ahead and don't expect to land a reservation the day of. Take out is available if you can do without the sit-down service. The restaurant has a bright and airy setting just off the main drag in Camden. A quaint town to visit and explore with a slew of restaurants to try and small shops to peruse. The menu was short but interesting and they had one special which we did try. And it is a fusion approach with a very authentic Thai flair. I first tried to order food from them June 2020 and after calling repeatedly for 10 minutes, I was told there was a 7 hour wait and they were only accepting dinner orders. That didn't work for my plans, so I declined but knew I wanted to try them as soon as I could again. I found myself back in Camden recently and knew to call in my order right when they open at 11:30. That did the trick! We had: Pork dumplings - delicious flavor and super fresh. Wrappers were a tad thick. Mussels - sooo good. Great broth and quality Pad see ew - this was our favorite. The housemade noodles are bomb and they nail all the flavors. These were clearly quickly wok fried, which is a flavor common in Thai food in Thailand but usually lacking in the states. They nailed it! I'm not sure when they'll open for dine in again, but I'd love to come back and try it then. As Popeye the Sailor Man might have said had he been with us, I'm strong to the finich, cause I eats my kale. We secured advance reservations via telephone because we knew, as you now know, that this restaurant is busy, busy busy on weekend evenings. We started off with Hoi Mangpou - steamed local mussels in a spicy coconut lemongrass broth that proved to be excellent. As is typical of my wife and I, each orders an entree of their choice that is shared. She ordered Pad Seaw - chicken stir fried with organic greens and egg in a sweet soy sauce over housemade wide noodles. I countered with Pad Pak - stir fried organic greens with local tofu. It never, though it should have, dawned on me that the organic greens featured in each dish would both be kale. Unexpectedly excellent Thai food in Camden. We had the mussels, chicken wings, second noodle dish on the left hand side of the menu (Chiangmai style?) and the coconut custard dessert. All were excellent, but the stand-out for us was the dessert (it's in the running for one of our top 5 desserts EVER) and super plump and flavorful mussels. I also thought the soup was fabulous but it was a little too flavorful for my husband who likes milder flavors. Was made even better by the sweet, kind and thoughtful service. I am doing a review for togo only food. The staff was very helpful when picking up my order of Pad Thai and Pad Kemao and unknown coconut milk soup with mushrooms and chili oil. I have eaten a lot of Thai food and or Thai Fusion and i did not enjoy either dish and the soup went unfinished. The Pad Thai was very dry and lacked flavor other than heat and I think peanuts must have been on sale because there was no shortage of those. The Pad Kemao (drunken noodle) was not much better.They say the noodles are homemade if that is the case I'm happy most other places leave the noodle making to the pros. We enjoyed one hell of a tasty Thai meal here, and were both surprised and impressed. This is a beautiful space in Camden, just a block or so away from the main row of shops. Our local guide (sister-in-law) told us to make reservations and that was the right call as we made them for an early dinner after driving up the coast of Maine. For starters, the town is fun to explore and see while you're in Maine. We were there in the cooler months so popular ice cream shops and others were shuttered for the season, but it's still scenic and charming. With Long Grain, we had our toddler which I would NOT recommend. She was not on her best restaurant behavior so we had to inhale our food and get in and out. They whipped up some amazing Pad Ke Mao for us, full of garlic and veggies and a nice, low to medium dosage of spice. The noodles were thick and homemade, soaking up every bit of the seasonings. I'm not always a "mushroom guy" but these were fantastic and brought an extra element to the dish. Overall service was fine, not the most welcoming but not unfriendly either. The ambiance is wonderful, but the food is the star of the show. We noticed a TON of Thai places in the state of Maine, and for our money, this was the best one we came across both on Yelp and in our opinion. read more

Ok the food is super tasty, the decor is cute and well maintained, the service well... not that great. I've been here twice - once for dinner and once for lunch. Both times sat at the bar because I didn't make a reservation. Tried a good sampling of foods- ALL of it really good (I would prob pass on the larb dish though). Service is so bad it's almost comical. First you wait forever for anyone to greet you at the door (first time they were busy ok I get it, second time no excuse they just couldn't be bothered). So at the bar, where water is handy everything is right there - it 1. Took a while to get refills on water (you had to ask) 2. Took a while to order (even though like I said they weren't busy) and 3. You have a partial view of the kitchen to see what's going on - including the wait staff checking their phones while the owner seemed to not notice because she was on the phone and running around. I literally saw this happen twice when I was there - once when the restaurant was busy and another time when it wasn't terribly busy but still there were people in the restaurant that needed service (ie ME!) I get it - I worked in restaurants but this was just blatantly disrespectful. This isn't a diner - it's a restaurant where I'm paying a minimum of $50 pp for my meal so c'mon people. Service aside the food really is good pad seaw, mussels were excellent! As well as the dessert! But yeah I just can't get over service... I'll order take out next time. read more
