I ordered a Kume fish bowl and got a glass of sprite with a splash of blue Curacao in it. I ordered a calamari appetizer and got a plate of about 7 deep fried extra firm rubber bands.. that's all I ordered with a side salad. The salad was great! I didn't eat the rest of my meal or bother with the drink, then sat there awkwardly as my friend ate his tiny little plate of tempura. This place used to be great. We went for my birthday back in September, and had an absolute blast! We were surprised to be seated right away, since we wanted the Hibachi experience. I thought for sure there'd be a line for that! We were seated with an another family that was also celebrating a birthday, so that was fun! Of course the chef puts on a funny show as he slings eggs, noodle, chips chicken and throws Sake. Spicy crunchy tuna , spicy crunchy salmon roll , yellow tail roll to go. 6 piece rolls unless you get a Chef special. Looked like they had a good lunch combo as well but I didn't want the included soup so just ordered individual rolls. Didn't look too busy on a late weekday afternoon but looks like a nice place to sit and have a meal. Cool giant sumo statue right when you walk in. 10 minutes and it was ready , amazingly quick. I enjoyed all the rolls but didn't realize the yellow tail was seaweed wrapped so wouldn't order that again. Everything was good seemed fresh. One thing about Kume: it's reliable. I've gone here probably 20+ times and I've never had a mistake in my food or bad service. It's always just right! The sushi is great- nothing too fancy but it's yummy. My fav is the Christmas roll. The hibachi is really great too. I especially love takeout because they make it quite easy and seamless. the last time we were hereI was disappointed in the calamari & soft shell crab. They were way too over fried. The calamari was too chewy to eat. So they took it off the bill. The rolls & sushi were very good. This time, I asked for no white fish on the Daryl Dixon roll, but extra topika, it was outstanding!! I also tried the Tempura tuna roll. It is a new favorite. The tuna tataki was chewie than last time, but after my husband's sushi came, I realized that it had been Toro, which is the prime tuna, but usually melts in your mouth. It tasted good but was way too chewy. My last visit, the tataki, was perfect. My husband's sushi was beautiful, fresh, with big portions. Although toro was chewy. We will definitely return next time we are in Augusta. read more

I have been to the Kume in Topsham, ME a few so I wanted to check out their August location to see if the quality of food matches their Topsham location. It did in my opinion. The location is sort of tucked away in the back of an area where there is many retail store and restaurants once you navigate the windy road of Stephen King Drive. Nobody knows how to drive this road so be on the defensive. This location has two sections of the restaurant, the hibachi side where you are entertained by their talented chefs while eating and the dining side where you are waited on by their staff. I chose the dining side which was a short wait as it's a smaller dining room. Appearance was well kept, bar is quite large, had a large fresh water fish tank and all staff presented as professional wearing masks. We started with the Pork filled Gyoza which is a pan fried dumpling and they were delicious. Nothing disappointing with them. Dumplings had plenty of filling, nice pan fried with one side being crispy and the other pillow soft from being steamed. The sauce was complimentary to the dumpling. We then dove into two different plates. The first one was the Red Dragon Roll. It is Shrimp Tempura, cucumber, avocado, topped w/crunchy pano and spicy tuna. It has a little spicy kick to it, but not overpowering at all. This has been one of my favorite sushi rolls from Kume. The second plate was the Maki Combination which is 3 different rolls: shrimp tempura roll, California and spicy tuna. I had no complaints as all ingredients were fresh, cooked well and nicely put together. I mixed up some soy sauce and wasabi which I dip my sushi rolls into to add additional flavor. I had no complaints as all of them were plentiful and satisfied my craving for sushi. Staff was very friendly, professional, always checking on us to ensure our experience and the quality of the food was to our standards and in some cases overly polite, but I understand that is their culture and upbringing. If I find myself in the Augusta area craving sushi, I will stop by here again. It's worth the visit. read more

The guy running the to go orders was a rude little jerk. He was short with me as soon as I walked through the door. He got even more miffed and rude when he couldn't get my credit card to work in his machine. Eventually he did and murmured something under his breath as I signed the slip. Went for Galentines and had Hibachi Lunch. They were quick to seat us and take our order. I ordered the Shrimp hibachi lunch and my friend got teriyaki chicken and rice. They brought the soup and salad together. The soup was good but it was cold. The salad was fresh and good When I got my shrimp the food had a weird smell. I tried it and it also tasted bad. I decided to send it back and I was apologetic when they came back they informed me they were charging me half price because I ate the salad and had one taste of the soup. I never thought I would live to see the day that Augusta got a cool, hip, delicious sushi restaurant. Either I'm dead, or the unimaginable happened! Kume is about as good as one can expect for a Japanese Steakhouse chain in "central" Maine. Was it the best sushi I've ever had? No. But was it way better than most chain-ish sushi restaurants I've been to? Hells yes! The starters were superb, particularly the pork goyoza. I had three rolls and they were all delicious- salmon avocado, something with salmon, mango and cucumber, and the Lady in Red. Great atmosphere and service as well. If you can't make it south of the Maine mason-dixon line (Brusnwick-ish) then this will certainly satisfy your sushi cravings. read more

As usual the first thing that I would give a comment about whenever I go to any Kume restaurant is their server, a very plain,slow speaking that doesn't know how to explain their menu and we need to ask someone to help us explain to her what we want but other than that the food is good,sushi is more better than other Japanese restaurants in the area, me and my wife both have the nabeyaki udon and it was great, very tasty and just about right on my palate This dish normally comes with shrimp tempura and a side salad,the tempura is crispy and sauce that comes with it was to sweet for me and the salad,not so appetizing ,just a few cut of lettuce with a watery dressing, if you're going to serve the salad like that maybe just forget it, it will just ruin the whole dining experience The whole dining area was huge and they have lots of servers and since that they were not busy at the time some were cleaning the tables and some were dusting. Kume is the place to go for hibachi in the greater Augusta area. The hibachi chefs are amazing, the food comes out quickly and is so fresh as it gets whipped up before your very eyes. If you catch the raw zucchini you get a long shot of sake from the chef! of for the kids the chef gives you a shot of water but everyone still chants "Sake Sake." My daughter loves the salmon hibachi kids meal. The portions are generous, the floor show is as entertaining as all get out. Their sushi chef is not be left out either. I have never seen a more elegant presentation than when you order the dragon roll, one of their most popular rolls, it is set on fire as it's delivered to your table. The ingredients in the dragon roll all balance and compliment each other nicely. I highly recommend you check it out. The restaurant is clean, modern, nice decor, and the wrap around bar is decorated with different colored pennies. We like to guess how much money is in the bar top. They have a beautiful establishment. It's for entertainment. It's fun and a bit loud but it's a show with the tempenyaki... I ordered lobster Rangoon and the was very little flavor. Also very little lobster for 9.00. This is also not a fast food restaurant but that should not be expected. It's about the experience and the food. Our waitress did a fine job and was attentive. I ordered sushi and watched the show as my party ordered off the flaming grill. My sushi was only just ok. The rice and fillings were bland. Everyone at our table said the food was ok. As for Japanese places go, I think this one was just ok. I stopped by here on the way back from Maine and was disappointed at the quality of the food compared to its cost. I normally get a salmon avocado roll when going out to eat and the fish tasted ok and the roll had way too much rice. Their soups were also too salty. The setting is really big but it did not get near to full during peak time. I also felt they do not give you a good portion of food for what you pay for. Over all this was an ok experience and I'm not too sure I would go back if I was in the area. read more

Welcome to one of be biggest hibatchi/sushi/steakhouses with a bar that I've been to! From the outside, Kume looks like it's going to be on the smaller side, but there's so much room once you step inside. Perfect to bring parties to. My first time coming here was with my in-laws: a group of 11, including my boys (1,7). Only 3 ended up ordering hibatchi, so the show wasn't very long. The cool was hilarious and gave us all a good time with tossing zucchini at us (I didn't catch it when it was my turn, sad face), making an onion candle & train, and interacting with my boys. He was amazing and made delicious food for those who ordered it. The portions sized are definitely on the larger side. My son ordered the Children's Hibatchi Chicken with noodles, my husband ordered a dragon sushi, and I ordered chicken teriyaki with fried rice. Each meal came with miso soup and salad, except for the children's hibatchi order. The Children's Chicken Hibatchi w/noodles: The noodle portion could have been a meal on its own! Our cook made enough noodles to cover half of the plate, and still leave some aside for our other son (1), who gobbled up his share quickly. The meal came with plenty of chicken and cooked veggies, it definitely looks more like an adult portion than a child's, and we're not complaining at all! Just expect leftovers if your child doesn't eat like a 18 year old. Teriyaki Chicken w/fried rice: The chicken was cooked well, and covered in just the right amount of sauce. The veggies were fresh and cooked well. The fried rice was good, nothing special. The plating was great! Imagine a freshly opened box of Jenga blocked, stacked perfectly. Now imagine the blocks are strips of chicken covered in teriyaki sauce and that's the plates chicken. It was a stack of chicken, perfectly layer on top of each other, super easy to eat that way. Underneath the chicken was a bed of veggies: carrots, zucchini, & mushrooms. It was a much better plating than I can relay, and unfortunately for you reading, I didn't take a picture. Flying Dragon: Pepper tuna, cucumber, with avocado, eel, strawberry sauce, masago. This is something that I don't have much info to give. I am currently pregnant and can't eat sushi (sad face). But my husband said it was good! The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our cups were never empty for more than a few minutes, our plates/bowls were cleared within a matter of minutes of us finishing, and they had smiles the entire time. The only bad thing about this trip to Kume is that I didn't think to take any photos to share of the food. The company, the entertainment, and the delicious food all together were simply enough for me today. You'll just have to go to Kume to see (and eat) for yourself! read more

We stopped going to Augusta's Kume restaurant 2+ years ago because the staff there seemed to have extreme and persistent difficulty with putting the katsu sauce in with our Chicken Katsu orders. This happened 100% of the time we ordered take-out from this restaurant. We have never dined in the restaurant, only eaten via take-out. At one pickup, my husband looked through the bag our order was in and saw there was no katsu sauce, again. So he went inside and was shuffled around - quite callously/apathetically from how he described it - to a small number of employees who did not speak English. No one was in a hurry to help him. He finally wound up speaking to a manger-type individual who proceeded to tell him what he got was katsu sauce for his chicken katsu. The sauce we continued to receive from this restaurant was an orange-ish color. It tasted alright but it wasn't katsu sauce. We have been frequenting the Topsham Kume for many years now. Take-Out only. When my husband approached them with our difficulties in Augusta we were assured that the brown sauce we get with our katsu order in Topsham is katsu sauce, and whoever is working in Augusta does, in fact, have katsu sauce available for their katsu orders. We ordered from Augusta again, and again they added no katsu sauce with our chicken katsu order - so they did not learn anything from the interaction my husband had with them explaining we aren't getting the right sauce with our order. There are other possibilities for why this problem persisted: the employees don't want to give it out, for some reason; the employees don't care if take-out orders are served correctly (that was the impression my husband got when he spoke to them...they were very flippant, as if he was wasting their time); management doesn't care if take-out orders are served correctly. We had made phone calls to the restaurant alerting them to the issue after we arrived home with our food, and even tried to be proactive about the issue by explaining to them while ordering, that we haven't gotten katsu sauce in the past and would like someone to make sure it's in the bag before closing it up. Of course he was assured this would happen but you can likely imagine what actually happened. So we just stopped going to this restaurant altogether. This weekend we decided to try the Augusta Kume again. We ordered the chicken katsu with extra sauce, and a couple other items with extra sauces so we'd each have a sauce to ourselves. I laugh when I write this but... what we got was - chicken katsu, dry.. because, of course - 2+ YEARS later and Augusta Kume STILL isn't giving customers katsu sauce. We got a miso soup bowl serving of this orange goopy sauce. Zero "extra sauces" for the sides we ordered - and one of them had no sauce inside it. So we were actually down a sauce. (Laugh. It's ok). But the funniest of the entire experience was ... my husband got a side salad with his order and this side salad was, literally, not figuratively for the story's sake... literally... a hunk of iceberg lettuce. And get this. He was given FOUR thousand island dressings to go with it. What the... this salad had no onion, or tomato. Not even a cucumber slice. Just... lettuce in a plastic container. But thank goodness he had 4 thousand island dressings to go with it. Good Golly. I don't write reviews like this often but honestly, this is deserving. If you work at the Augusta Kume I'm the person who Tweeted my complaint and deleted it because you were so immediate and supportive with your response. But your establishment learned NOTHING from our exchange because you have NEVER gotten a single take-out order of ours correct. NOT ONCE. Not before you addressed my tweet. Not after. And 2+ YEARS later we're still 'here'? Your restaurant deserves this rating. Should you improve and I experience it? I will absolutely reflect that in my improved rating. read more

Another visit to my little sister in Waterville and we had decided we had exhausted all of the options there, so a relatively quick drive down to Augusta seemed worth it. Her first suggestion had a 35 minute wait so we took off to explore and saw this. Neither of us had ever been to a Hibachi restaurant and since my sister is easily excitable, she really wanted to go as soon as she saw the sign. It was obvious from the parking lot we were there before any crowds that arrived for the lunch hour. So in we went. Fortunately another Patron notice star confused faces and explain to the process to us. There is a menu which offers sit down options and there are selections specific to Hibachi. Since we had never had it before, my sister and I decided to share he's Samurai special which includes a choice of three meats as well as a scorpion bowl drink for two. The food produced was excellent. My sister and I were glad we shared though since we had no idea how good it would be. We both ended up ordering something in addition and yet took home leftovers anyway. Hers went to her fiance and mine went to my husband. We both found the person cooking slightly awkward and with bad aim. He was attempting to send pieces of zucchini from his spatula into someone's mouth and he was 0/6. The waitress who was helping us made it seem like the chef only comes out to the Hibachi once so when I ordered something in addition that was from The Hibachi menu they had to check with a manager and decided they could make it in the kitchen, play it, and bring it out to me. Confusing, but the food was equal quality so I'm not really complaining that much. I do not know off hand if this is a chain of restaurants, but if this is indicative of Hibachi cooking and the resulting quality we can expect, it's definitely an experience I will look for at places closer to home. read more

Very disappointing service from the host chef, and Management! My daughter and her family met me at Kume in Augusta, ME for lunch yesterday - there were 7 of us (four were kids). it was 1pm and they were very busy. The kids love the hibachi experience so we requested that instead of the dining area. They sat us at our table at approximately 1:30 and we waited and watched them continue to sit people. We understood they were busy so we would probably wait a little longer than normal but we continued to wait for 45 minutes and watched as they took the order at the table behind us who had been seated after us and another table beside them. As their waiter left their table I stopped him and mentioned that we had been seated before them and had been waiting for a long time. Another 15 minutes passed and the manager finally came by so I stopped her and I asked again about getting waited on. She never apologized for the long wait then left and came back in another 5 minutes - at that point we placed our drink orders as well as our meal orders.....we even decided to skip some of the things we were planning on ordering because we knew the kitchen staff was busy. They came back with the drinks quickly then a few minutes later with the salad and soup - we barely got to start eating those when the chef arrived. It wasn't a pleasant hibatchi experience at all - he verified our orders and started cooking - he barely interacted with us (none of the fancy stuff the kids really look forward to). He cooked everything so fast and just threw it on our plates so some food just landed in the table! Some of the food wasn't completely cooked....one of my granddaughters just got rice and noodles and didn't even eat her noodles because they were not fully cooked. in addition, all our meals included rice or noodles which, in the past, they have let us order both so we just get smaller portions of each but this time they charged us $4 each for a side order portion but did not give us side order portions. When I went to pay I spoke to the Manager about the portions and I was told everything cost more now so the side portions are smaller - I went to say something else to her and she walked off to charge my card. When she got back I mentioned that we waited 45 minutes and had to ask twice to get waited on and they served others that came in after us - she never even apologized- she just said they were very busy. Very disappointed in the overall experience but the i was extreme disappointed with the way the Manager handled the situation. Our bill was $180 ($200 + with the tip)....when you spend that much you want to feel like it was worth it and we certainly did not! I was not asking for a free meal and I get the price of everything has gone up - but an apology for our wait and poor service would have been nice! I left with the feeling that the Manager didn't care about my concerns/our dining experience at all - it was all about the money....very unprofessional Manager! read more
