Very disappointing service from the host chef, and Management! My daughter and her family met me at Kume in Augusta, ME for lunch yesterday - there were 7 of us (four were kids). it was 1pm and they were very busy. The kids love the hibachi experience so we requested that instead of the dining area. They sat us at our table at approximately 1:30 and we waited and watched them continue to sit people. We understood they were busy so we would probably wait a little longer than normal but we continued to wait for 45 minutes and watched as they took the order at the table behind us who had been seated after us and another table beside them. As their waiter left their table I stopped him and mentioned that we had been seated before them and had been waiting for a long time. Another 15 minutes passed and the manager finally came by so I stopped her and I asked again about getting waited on. She never apologized for the long wait then left and came back in another 5 minutes - at that point we placed our drink orders as well as our meal orders.....we even decided to skip some of the things we were planning on ordering because we knew the kitchen staff was busy. They came back with the drinks quickly then a few minutes later with the salad and soup - we barely got to start eating those when the chef arrived. It wasn't a pleasant hibatchi experience at all - he verified our orders and started cooking - he barely interacted with us (none of the fancy stuff the kids really look forward to). He cooked everything so fast and just threw it on our plates so some food just landed in the table! Some of the food wasn't completely cooked....one of my granddaughters just got rice and noodles and didn't even eat her noodles because they were not fully cooked. in addition, all our meals included rice or noodles which, in the past, they have let us order both so we just get smaller portions of each but this time they charged us $4 each for a side order portion but did not give us side order portions. When I went to pay I spoke to the Manager about the portions and I was told everything cost more now so the side portions are smaller - I went to say something else to her and she walked off to charge my card. When she got back I mentioned that we waited 45 minutes and had to ask twice to get waited on and they served others that came in after us - she never even apologized- she just said they were very busy. Very disappointed in the overall experience but the i was extreme disappointed with the way the Manager handled the situation. Our bill was $180 ($200 + with the tip)....when you spend that much you want to feel like it was worth it and we certainly did not! I was not asking for a free meal and I get the price of everything has gone up - but an apology for our wait and poor service would have been nice! I left with the feeling that the Manager didn't care about my concerns/our dining experience at all - it was all about the money....very unprofessional Manager! read more

The standards have dropped dramatically at Kume. The sashimi Deluxe that was once served on ice with colorful lights is now no ice on a bland plate. The portions of sushi are so small that you'd be better off buying sushi at Hannaford. I had their "vampire" drink and it was watered down sprite and tasteless. We will not be back anytime soon if ever. I'll just go to Hannaford for the same money I spent at kume and get 5 times the amount of sushi. Pathetic. read more

This was an excellent overall dining experience. The food presentation was perfect and the quality was off the charts. Our waiter Vincent was attentive but not in our face constantly. The drinks were perfectly balanced and very flavorful. The price was excellent given the quality of the food and the amazing atmosphere. Five stars for service but two stars for food. Been here twice now first time got the filet and lobster for two at the hibachi with a large group. Smallest lobster tail I've ever seen and very little steak. Lobster was over cooked and tough. Steak was okay. Second time was hibachi with another large group, we got a sushi roll to start which was good and then had the chicken, plenty of food but nothing spectacular. I want to like the food more but what they lack for in food they do give 110% in service. The hibachi cooks are very good and do all the normal stuff that entertains the group. I was pretty disappointed in our Hibachi experience recently at Kume. It was a great surprise when they opened up here in the Augusta area and I was excited to take my child there. When we had company we decided to try it out and made reservations. The space is huge - almost uncomfortably so in the main bar room but we were escorted over floor food (granted it happens in hibachi but there were no tables currently cooking, and only 2 other tables with guests) into a filling hibachi table with people who looked unhappy at being sat with strangers (?!). We got a few good-priced drinks (for the size, was great, too bad it was the only one I was offered at any time) and gave our order for a sushi/sashimi appetizer. Before we were able to finish our appetizer, the hibachi chef came and he was pleasant but not spectacular - with a child at the table, I expected more. The portions were ok, they looked poorly planned as my husband who was the last at the table got a short portion of veggies but since he was the only one who ordered the calamari, he got all of that (which looked almost like 2 portions ?). The sushi was ok, not great - it's unlikely I would go there just for the sushi when Cafe Bangkok in Hallowell does such a great job. And the hibachi was disappointing. The flavors were not very clean, as expected, and it was sloppy and not entertaining. It's unlikely we'll go back any time soon and since it is a local chain I don't expect the one in Topsham to be any better so I doubt we will check that one out, either. read more

This place sucks pig dick. I was accused of stealing and got harassed the next time I came in, when in fact they were the ones who forgot to take my card when they cashed out my entire group. Got everyone's cards, but mine. Every time me and friends come in here we are stared at and treated so rudely and the waiters DEMAND that you tip them or they throw a fit. Said we never tip any time we come in there yet every time me and my friends have been there it's always been very generous tips. Hope that everyone else sees this and realizes this place is not friendly. Only nice people are the hibachi chefs and the owner himself. read more

Always curious about this place. The decor is beautiful with fish tanks and floral design. It's been awhile since we went, but I remember the meal was quite tasty and exotic presentation. However, for us it was a bit on the pricey side. Service was excellent. Now I recall this was way before Covid 19 hit. I absolutely would recommend this to those who have good taste. Pros: Beautiful environment, fast service, full sushi bar, comparable with other local prices, full drink bar, japenese beers. Cons: It didn't hear my favorite Thai restaurants that does sushi. I did find it to be a tad bizarre that they used a pepsi 1990 hard plastic cups for my sparkling water. I would have liked a glass like a big kid personally. The salmon was over cooked also. I don't know how two restaurants (one in Topsham one in Augusta) can be so different. Or how the employees at one can think that Katsu sauce is one thing while the other location thinks it is something completely different (Duck Sauce). But they do. We buy our meals from Topsham a lot. Never have any problems there. Augusta on the other hand? You need to get your act together. I don't want Duck Sauce with my Chicken Katsu. I want KATSU sauce. If you don't know what it is, you shouldn't be serving food in that restaurant. read more

Well, having been to KUME a few times since moving up here...it's okay...food is alright...but it's americanized ..plates are too large, food is passable but meh...Tako Su - Octopus salad...swimming in a dressing that is way too much...Bento box...instead of a Bento box you get a huge plate with 4 compartments and if you order anything else...no room on the table...plates are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY too BIGGGGG!!!! Bento Box was disappointing for the cost...compared to Benkays in Portland...this is fast food ...no care...just cookie cutter thrown on a plate...no honor...no pride...just serve the next customer... and honestly wish this whole 'Hibachi' show thing would end immediately...can't even look in the room for the lights flashing and the music and the noise...the clanging of the utensils on the grill hurts my ears even on the other side of the wall... We had excellent service and both our waitress and hibachi chef went above and beyond to accommodate my daughters gluten allergy. The hibachi chef used clean utensils to cook all of her food before touching anything that may contain gluten. it was our first experience out at a restaurant since her diagnosis and it was fantastic. One of our favorite places in Augusta to eat before a movie. The decor is really spectacular - my electrician husband thinks the lighting above the bar is really cool, and I love the bubble wall and the huge fish tank! I don't know where they found those fish, but they certainly are full of personality. Although I wonder if it makes them sad to see all the sushi being carried by. We haven't done the hibachi yet, but it always sounds as if people are having a blast over there. We opt for the sit-down meal, and have never been disappointed. The options are always fresh and flavorful. My favorite is the spider roll, but all the sushi is very good. Make sure you leave enough time if you've got something else planned for the evening - the service tends to be slow, even when it's not particularly crowded. Going downhill fast. We've been here on 5 separate occasions since they opened their restaurant. It was great at first, now it's not. When we walked in I immediately observed how filthy the floors were, dirty fingerprints everywhere and the bar area is disheveled looking. I wanted to walk out but we were very hungry and unfortunately Augusta doesn't offer much for mom & pop places on certain days/times. I ordered the mushroom soup. It was about 6 oz. of a clear "broth" with a sliver of mushroom. It literally tasted like filthy socks were steeped in hot water. Absolutely the worst soup I've ever had. The sushi roll was bland, the shrimp tempura was clearly prepared hours/days in advance, was barely any coating on it and the end last bite was a raw shrimp. It was a disgrace. I have had this roll here a couple years ago, so I have an honest comparison. We will never go here again. No need for the manager to respond. read more

Had the crunchy tuna roll but it wasn't my favorite. My husband had the red chicken curry and he said it was good. He took left overs home which I was going to eat the next day but I noticed little fivers all over the chicken and vegetables. I was shocked at how good it was. The Wasabi was superior to most places I've been, the sashimi was very fresh and delicious. The teriyaki shrimp was good and the chicken udon was way better than I could have hoped for. The edamame was OK, but could have been warmer when served and the kani salad had one piece of seaweed that was a little fishy, but the miso and salad made up for it. I called ahead and made a reservation for 7 PM. My fiancé and I came with two of our friends. We got sat at a hibachi table with 8 other people (they ended up being the best part of the whole night) We got sat at 7:10 which was no biggy because of course it was busy. It's Valentine's Day so we expected it to be busy but not like what we experienced. By the time we sat down and ordered drinks it took us an hour an a half to receive them (I'm not even exaggerating) We watched 2 other tables get sat, placed drinks and have the guys come start preparing their food. Obviously we were upset and someone from our table went to find our waitress to ask what was going on. The manager eventually came over and basically laughed us off without offering to help us or get our drinks. Come two hours after getting seated, the guy finally came over and cooked for us. He was amazing and the only reason I'm giving two stars. We gave him an extremely generous tip because he's the only reason out night wasn't awful, When we went to pay our bills, the waitress put on a drink that we never got. So we told her it's fine, we'll take it and drink it anyways so that you don't have to go through the process of getting it taken off (I'm a waitress so I understand it's complicated) And she continued to try and take the check with our credit card out of my hand. I said no! You aren't charging our card until we get what you're charging us for. At the end someone from our table asked for some kind of comp because the service was absolutely terrible. The waitress said no and went on to tell us (without us saying anything about it) that if we didn't tip atleast %10 that she would have to pay out of pocket. Update: The owner has been responding the same exact way to these types of reviews for a long time. The language in each literally sounds like copy and paste. Makes me question whether out reviews are taking into consideration. Especially if the same issue has persisted for months! Truly an awful experience. The host was very friendly with helping us get seats very promptly even on a holiday. The guys behind the sushi bar were also really nice. While we waited an hour for our food, they gave us a little dish with spicy crab and kelp. The waiter, purely awful. Didn't even greet us. Asked us for drinks and after we ordered never checked back on us. Food took an hour, as I said, and it came cold. The people next to us were also dissatisfied. When they told their waiter, also ours, that their food was cold, the waiter said "ok good" and walked away. Asked for the check immediately and it took so long for them to bring it. Someone else saw us upset and helped us thankfully. Overall, do not recommend. Way better places to go to even for the same type of cuisine. read more

What I miss the most after moving to Augusta is a decent sushi place. While their sushi is good the rest of the food is a fast pass for me.
