I was right next to my wife when she made a 745 to 8pm reservation for 3, careful to make it clear that we'd take the bar or a common table accommodation. The person on the phone cleared such. And, I am writing this explicitly because I had a manager stare me down and invoke this review, challenging us to do so, in a very cavalier manner that no business owner would ever want. They couldn't accommodated us and insisted our reservation was for two, which we would never had made on the account of our 12 year old daughter being with us. You want the review, you got it. I am a local and have been at Long Grain probably 3 times. Always VERY noisy. I wear hearing aids an it is nearly impossible to carry on a conversation at a table. There are no quiet corners. We were seated promptly. The food everyone agrees is great, but at home we don't add salt to anything so I find most if not all the dishes over salted. (This is common to most restaurants. I don't know if it is worse at Long Grain or with Thai food.) It's kind of weird that there is no real waiting area and no place to hang a coat or stash an umbrella. (Maybe the long bench is there for that purpose.) The service was kind of spotty, in that 3 of our 4 entrees arrived at once and we waited 10 minutes for our 4th to be served. (They ran out for Pad Thai and had to make a new batch. It arrived steaming hot!) We had two wait staff: one was sweet but the other was a bit surly ("Sweet and Sour?") But given that were are so so busy on this Saturday night (our reservations were for 6PM), they did try hard to accommodate. For example, we ordered 1 dessert to share among the 4 of us *after* we had paid our bill (I actually thought this was unreasonable) but there were no sour looks from the wait staff and they just delivered 4 plates, 4 forks, and a second check for the dessert. We never felt rushed. This is a local favorite and most of us locals recommend it to vacationers, but I just find it a bit much. Maybe 'cause that is because I am 74 and grumpy. It's nice that you see all kinds of folks there . . . from young couples on dates, after work groups and whole families at big tables. We drove to Camden specifically to try Long Grain, and even though it was only takeout, I have zero regrets about the 1.5 hour drive. The food was beyond delicious. I got the spicy night market noodles, and my partner got the Maine crab fried rice with a fried egg. Both exceeded my expectations for an Asian restaurant in a small town in Maine. The spicy night market noodles came with a broth that created the perfect triad of sweet, sour, and spicy. It was such a unique flavor. The choice of rice noodles is perfect for the broth because it allows the broth to take center stage. The pork was also perfectly cooked and flavorful. I would highly recommend it, even though it's a bit messy to eat. I only had three (big) bites of the fried rice, and I wish I was allowed to have more of it because it was one of the best fried rice dishes I've ever had. The crab was perfect, and the fried rice was cooked to perfection. It wasn't greasy or salty. Crispy fried wonton special appetizer was good. Pad Thai was good, I put some of the sauce from the curry Massaman on it bc I wanted a bit more wetness and flavor. The chicken in the curry Massaman and potatoes was not for me and the rice that came with it was a bit over done. The mussels were quite good and the north they came in was unique. Probably one of the best south East Asian restaurants in Maine. It's a very busy place. We tried to call them multiple times and the call finally went through after about 10 attempts. We wanted to try this place when we were in Maine this summer but they were closed on the day we drove by Camden. We were glad that we got to try it this time. The night market pork noodles was my favorite in this restaurant. The coconut soup was very salty and over-priced. It's $11 and came in a pint. The other dishes we ordered were good but it's not so amazing that we have to go back there again. I love this restaurant and have been here many times. The space is clean and airy. The service is good, though often rushed. Reservations, even at lunch, are highly recommended or you may not get a seat. Their house made wide rice noodles are amazing, silky and very tasty. The local tofu is so delicious, as are the local greens. There are some very spicy dishes, but also an assortment of dishes for the less adventurous. I had an amazing meal at Long Grain, having gone at the recommendation of a friend, for an anniversary dinner. Here's the thing, I was a little skeptical. How could a tiny Thai restaurant in Camden, Maine be all that special or different from Thai food I'd had in Portland or other cities around the country? I made a reservation, not sure I'd actually need one, but I am so glad I did! We arrived a bit early for our reservation and waited in a few seats by the entrance. It's a small, one-room space, but beautifully decorated. Once seated, we ordered drinks and three entrees to share (with the intent to have yummy leftovers too). We were blown away with the quality, quantity, flavor, and overall deliciousness that we were served! I eat Thai food almost weekly, and nothing I've had compares to Long Grain! My wife ordered the Kao Soi (curry noodles and chicken), I ordered the Pad Ke Mao (spicy noodles with greens, mushrooms, and tofu), and we shared an order of fried rice. Dear goodness, it was fabulous. The presentation was simple, but lovely. The flavors were deep, mouthwatering, gorgeous. Every bite was better than the last. We had plenty of leftovers, as hoped, and got to enjoy the meals again a couple days later. The downside of Long Grain? It's two hours from my house, and no other Thai food will ever taste as good. They have two phone numbers you can dial for takeout but it still took 15-20 minutes just to get through and order. Long Grain was a treat. After a long travel day ORD to BOS and the hellish five hour holiday drive to Camden, I was ravenous and ready to bite someone's head off. Thankfully we had a booking at Long Grain waiting for us. They were really busy, so a reservation is a must. We started with a salad and pork dumplings which were both solid starts. For our mains we shared the Ramen: noodles, pork belly, egg and kimchi, minced chicken and Pad Me Kao. We really liked all three and they had a welcome kick that we always need with our Thai fix. I ordered dinner from Long Grain the last week I was in Camden, mid-November 2020, and it was a treat. Long Grain is extraordinary Fusion Thai, smack dab in the middle of midcoast Maine. Read that again. You are not in LA or Flushing Queens. You are in a small coastal Maine town. Before COVID, people drove from as far away as Boston for dinner. As you might imagine, I ordered a ton of food for one person. I wanted to experience as many different dishes as I could because who knows when I'd be in Camden next. My order, from starters to mains (including noodles): * Pan-fried garlic chive rice cakes w/ sautéed bean sprouts* These were simple fried rice cake squares. I couldn't discern the "garlic chives" flavor. Maybe five bean sprouts. Came with a super delicious soy-based dipping sauce. At $11.00 for six smallish pieces, this is a simple starch option if one feels flush. If you're into repurposing your order, you'll be fine, don't fret. I sliced up the leftovers, tossed them into sautéed kale, with a fried egg for breakfast. Next time, I'll order the fried rice, glowingly reviewed by other Yelpers. * Magic Oil* I think it's called magic oil. This is a little container of "spicy" oil that acts like chili crisp--crispy fried garlic, chili, maybe some other whole aromatics, hard to say?--but is mostly oil. It's quite mild and not terribly aromatic. It's a $1.00 so if you feel like trying it, you should. * Steamed mussels in spicy coconut lemongrass broth* Wow! Okay. Let's go. The broth has a definite, luxuriant smolder. Lemongrass, lime & basil keep the flavor fresh, herbaceous & sharp. And, if it reminds you of Thom Kha Gai but w/ mussels, surprise! YES! You're in Maine! Mussel lovers, get this. Sort-of like mussels? Order this to ignite your obsession. Sometimes a quiet, simple dish will point to the Chef/kitchen's remarkable hand, care & prowess. This is that dish. * Spicy, stir-fried, house made wide rice noodles w/ Thai basil, organic greens & mushrooms (Long Grain's take on pad kemao), w/protein choice or extra veg* Delicious, 100%. I was knocked out by the wealth of fresh foraged mushrooms--definitely oyster, maybe trumpet?--and fresh farm greens in this dish. The vegetables are chopped coarsely, into large segments; an invitation to appreciate their textures and tastes. Not only super flavorful & elegant, Long Grain's pad kemao is an innovative midcoast Maine iteration of a dish made half a globe away. This is the mark of good fusion for me: creating a dish built of traditional components & technique as well as local-to-the-chef ingredients. Final thoughts on the kemao: I ordered it with pork belly. I would have preferred the pork belly to have more structure, perhaps a bit of chew/crunch. Next time I order this dish I will stick to all veg. For me, that's where this dish shines. *Beef Panang curry w/ roasted red peppers, bamboo shoots & Thai basil This is superb. Like, outstanding. The mouthfeel of the "curry" is plush yet sharp, redolent, round and fiery. By this I mean its complex taste unfolds in the mouth, blooms and balances salty, sweet, sour, astringent and funk. The beef, cut a little larger than stew-sized pieces, is tender & velvety. Don't order this if you can't spend time with this dish, savoring each bite. And, basil lovers, rejoice. This is for you. I ate this for two nights straight. Then, with what was leftover over, I made some "kitchen noodles" with steamed shaved Carnival squash and udon. Even that tasted amazing. I think the strategy for a Long Grain food order is to order a bunch of dishes, enjoy it thoroughly, and be delighted to have leftovers to repurpose or simply reheat as is. A few words on Long Grain's vibe. First, they take sourcing very seriously here. Local, organic, line caught, pastured--thorough and careful sourcing that they honor by preparing carefully considered food, priced to reflect ingredients & labor. Second, they are a community mainstay. When I went to pick up my food, the individual who was packing orders in coolers* knew each customer by name. Except me, because it was my first time there. Still, she wished me a good night & warmly invited me to enjoy my meal. *ps: Long Grain's COVID takeout policy is available to read on their website. It's a little old skool as one has to call in an order in the late morning for a dinner pick up & the phone line is often engaged. That's okay. Keep trying. It's very worth it. The labor you will expend is nominal. Also, please don't expect that you can call in an order of food & pick it up 30 minutes later. That's not the way this system works. Having come to Maine, in part, to get a taste of New England, I was reluctant to try Long Grain - in spite of the reviews. Then, after my wife tried calling about 30 times without getting ahold of anyone (either busy or just kept ringing), and I after I walked over to the restaurant to order in person only to be told we had to call (how frustrating), I gave up. I'm glad I relaxed my expectations just a bit, and we called back the next day for takeout (the only option during COVID) and ate it in our hotel room. I'll start by saying this is the only time I've ever given five stars to a takeout restaurant and the only time I ever will give to a place that doesn't answer its phone or allow you to order online or in person. Next, I'll say it's the best Thai food I've ever eaten, hands down. Finally, part of the reason I'm a fan is that it wasn't just Thai food, but Thai food with a New England flare. I've only done takeout with Long Grain but enjoyed looking at the inside when I went to pick up food. Please be aware that takeout orders are assigned a time slot because they get so many. They will tell you which times are available and you pick your preferred time. The time slots go quickly so put in your order closer to when they open to get the time you want. The food is mainly Thai with some Korean and maybe others mixed in. Their Pad Thai is a staple and very popular. I can't resist their green curry. I love spicy curry and can go pretty high on the spicy scale but the curry comes in at a medium if you order it without asking them to adjust it. Stopped in for lunch without a reservation on a weekday. Very busy with only two servers working the bar, dining area and performing hostess duties. We were told the wait would be about 20 minutes and it was. We were seated at the bar. We noticed others waiting a very long time for their tables, some who had reservations. In general the service was very kind and competent, but chaotic - I felt like they have blown up in popularity and are struggling to cope, but hats off to the two folks working that day. As for the food, we shared the farm salad, rice cakes and pad kemao. The first two items were good - the farm salad was served cobb salad and the rice cakes were flavorful and tasty. The pad kemao disappointed us. I think we ordered poorly - the noodles were really wide and pale and didn't taste like anything, and the tofu was mushy (scrambled egg consistency). We just didn't care for it. The fried rice that others got looked better! Atmosphere was very airy and modern, and prices were a little high. Parking was easy across the street. I liked the food that I had here. I came here for dinner and had the rice bowl with diced chicken on top. I also had the egg on top which made it really really good. The dish was very spicy, but very high-quality and very delicious. Probably more food than I needed. The weird thing about this place is apparently you need reservations for the bar. I did not have a reservation. I just sat at the bar and waited for someone to come over. The waitresses ignored me, and I gather that's partly because I didn't have a reservation. They reluctantly allowed me to sit at the bar and order dinner and beer, but I thought it was a little weird that you needed a reservation to sit at the bar in an empty barstool. The blonde waitress who works there avoided me entirely, so getting service took quite a while. Their IPA that they have there which I believe is from Maine or New Hampshire was excellent. I don't remember the name but it really was a very high-quality IPA. Anyway I gather this is a very trendy place for the 30 and 40 something crowd. Lots of dates happening. I think this is a very nice place and apparently has good food and is open later than a lot of the other restaurants in Camden, my only concern is that they have very strict guidelines around who can sit where in the fact that you need a reservation. read more

Hands down, one of the most delicious and authentic Thai restaurants we've ever visited in the US! We lived in Manhattan for many years, but never found Thai food quite like this. To start, we ordered the rice cake and pork dumplings. Both delicious, but would probably skip next time to make more room for the mains and dessert. We travelled to Chiang Mai this past December, so naturally we were excited to try the Kao Soi. We were instantly transported back to the markets in Thailand. The broth was so flavorful and the noodles were absolutely amazing. We also ordered the Pad Kemao which was just as rave worthy. Wow. After eating lobster every day, two times a day, here in Maine, we had opted for a non-lobster lunch. My amazing fiancé had made lunch reservations quite a while ago. Four of us. Small restaurant and every table was full. It was bustling. Two very pleasant young ladies were clearing the tables and seating people & taking orders. You could just tell they were very good at their job. Both the men in our group are chefs & restaurant owners. They were so impressed with all the food.
