Sat outside for 20 min assuming they would come out and take my order. It wasn't until I called and asked why nobody had came out yet to help me and my wife, and he had said they stopped doing curbside orders in the start of the summer. Well, it would have been nice if there was some kind of signage or maybe after 20 min the employees could have used their common sense and customer service to come out and take our order and I would have been to then have been informed of their new summer policy. Jack's serves a large American menu, burger, hot dogs, fries and various fried food. We tried burgers, curly fries, and fried pickles. They have a sign that talks about quality food not being "fast", but I found the wait time on a Saturday afternoon to be reasonable. It's just a walk up counter with a few seats outside, but seems well maintained and well run. Fried pickles were great! Burgers were decent- their prices have definitely gone up- but so have everyones. We have always been big fans of Jacks drive in, since the new owners have taken on the restaurant things have changed a bit. The food as I remember is pretty similar and yes the prices have gone up (which industry hasn't had costa go up?) but they are more tech friendly, better online experience, and more menu choices. The corn dogs were okay, the burgers were good, fries were pretty good, and I got a burrito which is more like a chimichanga not a burrito. What I got was a bun with an overcooked frozen patty, some shredded lettuce, a pickle, a half piece of bacon, I think there was a small piece of cheese and a small dollop of tasteless sauce. I like Jack's. It has a feel of an "In and Out Burger". Great great great fry sauce. I got two extra for my burger. It was a cheat day, and I wanted small town, local, fast, gut bomb. Some things could have been better, but keep in mind, I had 3 single burgers, large fry , and a small coke for 14$. Also this meal was for two. I didn't go hog wild. I wish I would have gotten double burgers, as the patties were small. I knew I should have went with the curly frys as they looked better on someone else's plate than on my standard frys, and I wish I would have gotten a shake cause they looked great as well. This place is amazing from the top to the bottom of the menu! Everything has so much flavor and creativity! The whole family has loved everything we have tried. My husband swears the onion rings here are the best he's ever had. I agree with him. It's all cooked to perfection, nothing is overdone, too crunchy, or tough to eat like other burger joints tend to be with meat. They also have a great fry sauce recipe. Great food! Owned and ran by a local family for the past 25 years. Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers are good but on the smaller side, If you want a good size burger go with the Jack Burger. A favorite is the Farmboy, similar to the look of a Big Mac, but with sauce lettuce pickles and ham. The hamburger sauce and fry sauce are great. I split fried mushroom after being told how good they were, and I mean who doesn't want to spend almost 4 dollars on 6 greasy little mushrooms? They even charged me extra for fry sauce! Whooohoo. Some many rave reviews, yet so much disappointment. The nostalgia is such a draw for this place, but the food, not so much. My advice, stick to grilled cheese and fries, you will probably enjoy your meal. Anything else, and you should probably look elsewhere! read more

As a young boy in the 70's I would traverse the alleyways of Caldwell picking up tin cans with friends in order to get enough (.25) for an order of Gems. Aka tater tots along with the fry sauce. I remember sitting in the small and intimate ordering area several times in anticipation of that golden deep fried goodness that McD's could not match. On a good day yielding bountiful aluminum finds I would also order a jack burger as well. My younger siblings always wanted to visit this place too and when I felt gracious I would bring them home some of that golden deep fried treasure. I remember getting my bike tire fixed or aired up right next to Jacks too, I think is a Big O tire now. There used to be KFC a block away which never was an option for me. The pubic library is right around the corner so after filling up on food I would go and look at the monster books of Godzilla, Frankenstein and Dracula. And those giant Charles Schultz Peanuts comic strip books as well. When I watched the movie Super 8, I thought of this wonderful place. Don't miss this place if your in the area. It's not nearly as good as I remember it from over 30 years ago. I think the menu has more than what it should. We decided to try it out for lunch and I ordered a "Double Cheeseburger". It was more bread than anything else. The bun was like what you you would get on a Big Mac, but was nice and fluffy. I had to look for the burger patties. "WHERE'S THE BEEF?" It was like they took a McDonald's patty and cut it in half so you get 2 patties out of it. Ditto for the cheese slice. I want to support local businesses, but won't go back to Jack's. I will say my wife seemed to like her mushroom burger. But I have a feeling it was more mushrooms than meat. One of the first burgers I ever fell in love with back in the 90's when I was a wee grade school aged child. It still remains a favorite. How much of this is due to my rose-tinted glasses vs the actual overall quality and taste is up for debate. Nevertheless, the fact remains that I have never finished a Jack's burger and felt anything but satisfied and craving more; the latter possibly due to the size of their standard burgers. Jack's has done something that all hometown favorite burger joints have discovered as a key to sustained success and that is to NOT CHANGE. The burger I enjoyed as an 8 year old is the same burger I enjoy today as young man of 30. Their burgers are still the same. The patty is still thin, the bun is still soft, and the signature taste from the lettuce with their burger sauce (some type of watered down mayo) is still going strong. The other mark of a long withstanding burger spot (in the Pacific Northwest anyway) that Jack's has all but perfected is their fry sauce. Sure, the recipe for fry sauce isn't a secret. But Jacks' fry sauce somehow reigns supreme, and as a local I have had a LOT of different fry sauces. I credit this place as the reason behind why I still can't help mixing up my own batch at any restaurant i visit in an area that has yet to discover the beauty of fry sauce. Jack's Fry Sauce is king. With that being said there is still something to be desired of this enduring local favorite. Customer service can be a bit inconsistent and I attribute this mostly due to most of their workforce comprising of high school students who likely have not had a lot of customer service experience. Not a big deal at a place where your interaction ends after you pay at the counter, but worth noting since it is something that can turn away a casual visitor. Their prices can also be a source of deterrment for some customers. Don't get me wrong, their standard burger price at under $2 is extremely reasonable. However, when you realize you will need 2-3 of these to feel satisfied it can change the equation a bit. Additionally, there is then the additional cost of fries, drinks and extra fry sauce. Yes, you'll want extra fry sauce (See above). While someone looking for a small bite to eat can easily spend less than $10, a family of 4 who are all looking for a real meal can easily spend $50-60; a price that is a bit offputting for an establishment that doesn't have indoor seating. I don't see Jack's going away anytime soon and as long as they never change I don't think they ever will. read more

Experience: I grew up eating Jacks Drive-in as a kid. It was purely coincidence that my parents would stop by and pickup a couple cheeseburgers for me, rather than going to the local McDonalds, and I thank them very much for it. I now reside in California, but every couple years when I visit Caldwell, I make it a point to come to Jacks and order 3 cheeseburgers and a large fry. Quality: My girlfriend was with me on my most recent visit. She works supply chain for a multi-billion dollar fast food chain so she knows some good basics about how to critique simple foods like a cheeseburger. Her thoughts, the bread was soft and fluffy, cheese was melted, there is a tasteful amount of seasoning to the beef, and the sauce they add gives a good but not over powering amount of flavor. All seems basic right? Add them all together and it turns an "okay" cheeseburger to a "good" cheeseburger, all for a very affordable price. See you again in a couple years, Jacks! read more
