We tried Gem In & Out a couple of days ago I first thought it was drive through only happy to find more seating options than I expected. I must say the service and wonderful people were very welcoming! My wife told her it's our first visit and she gave us a coupon for $10.00 off our meal! Hamburgers were simple but delicious! Drive thru: Great food. Good prices. But be sure you have time because if there are 1-2 cars in front of you most likely a 15 minute wait. If 3 or more, expect 30 minutes. Good food though. Salads are great. read more

Great onion rings, good chili cheese fries and decent burgers. Was a little disappointed in the milk shakes, but with the BOGO on Friday & Saturday it's still not terrible. The ham on the hamburger was definitely different but not in a bad way. Next time I'll stick with one of the basket options but overall, solid old school spot. That being said - just because it shares part of its name with a certain chain from California does not mean it is close to that in anyway shape or form. Great classic burger drive through that has been around for quite some time in the local area. They have the best breakfast burrito I have found in Caldwell and huge coffee portions. My only gripe would be they can be painfully slow. read more

I grew up in Caldwell in the 80's and loved going to this place back in the day. So of course when I come to town it's always on my list of places to visit. I get a good old fashioned cheeseburger and tots. Their fry sauce is home made and so perfect for the tots. The building is older of course but I think that adds to the charm. The staff is always so nice and helpful. read more

Service was great. Nice little burger joint in Caldwell. I had the spicy chicken sandwich, or so I thought. They had the chicken sandwich on special. I asked if the spicy chicken was part of that deal. After being told no, I ordered the spicy chicken combo. The sandwich was okay. The chicken breast was a little small to the bun. It had great flavor, but I detected no spice at all. The tots tasted good and were stove hot, a plus for me. Free refills on the drink, as it should be. The sandwich was okay, but I wanted spicy. A few pickles on that sandwich would make it better in my opinion. I will give this place another shot. read more

I absolutely LOVE Gem in and out. however the past few times my order has been wrong, and or im waiting 20+ minutes at the window just for my order to be incorrect. I support because I enjoy the food and that it's local. Personally I fear the issue is they need to fix the speaker boxes so employees can understand orders and make sure it's not incorrect by repeating it. This place is awesome, and my BLT was loaded with bacon and fresh lettuce and tomato! Simply a great mom and pop restaurant with a drive thru or eat-in option. It also seemed as the locals come here for their lunches too. I wasn't exactly eavesdropping but I did hear the conversation of the two farmers in the next booth over. Bathrooms were clean, so I assumed the kitchen was too. Curly fries were yummy (I ate some of the hubby's). I loved the attitude of the little old lady who took my order! Caveat: I am a native Southern California transplant and yes I like In & Out, but it's NOT the best burger out there. Gotta admit though, I did ask locals on the local foodies FB page, "Hey, where can I get a burger like In & Out." I did not know better. Shout out first, to 13th Street Pub and Grill in the Hyde Park 'hood. They have a burger that will 'break yo mouth'. Set a brand new standard for me. Heard about Gem In & Out from many locals and my clients, so I knew sooner or later I'd be driving thru for a burger. Got the Gem Burger meal, even though I'm not a big fan of ham. The burger was ono and so were the fries. Drive-thru moves a bit slow, but you can tell they are making it fresh as you order. Next try will be their Taco Burger. I like they have their own spin on fast food favorites and I try to support local businesses as much as I possibly can. I'd love it hit this place up more often, but I gotta work out more to justify the extra calories, fat and salt. . . but man, whatta way to go. We had a mix of good and not so good at this restaurant on this our first visit. We were very disappointed in their selection of milkshakes (only 4 flavors available) and the fact that they were handed to us already thin and runny. And their cherry milkshake tasted horrible, like fake cherry flavor. We ordered a ranch chicken sandwich which was overcooked, dry, and nearly flavorless, an order of tots which were hot and crispy, but a bit under seasoned, and a taco burger that was actually pretty good for the money. All in all, we were not impressed and will return to other fast food and take-out restaurants in the Caldwell area. At least these other restaurants have a lot of milkshake flavor choices and know how to make a thick and enjoyable milkshake. read more

This is a typical burger joint that is surviving because it is fast, friendly and reasonably priced. When in downtown Caldwell there are a number of dining choices but this place has the ability to get you fed fast. There are a lot of choices on the menu so there should be something for everyone to eat. The person taking our order was very efficient and asked all the necessary questions with a smile. I judge all burger joints by the king of all burger joints, The Viking Drive-Inn in Boise. The Gem is one of the better burger places I've been to. It's not at "Viking level" but dang good. This little mom and pop place has a great greasy spoon atmosphere and super friendly service. The Gem burger, which has a slice of ham and cheese on it is a great old school burger. It's no Eric 2 from the Viking but it's damn good. Excellent stuff....with places like this I can't imagine why any proud American would bother going to a chain burger place. read more

Admittedly, I haven't been to too many burger stands in the treasure valley. That said, Gem has been one of my absolute favorites (Bad Boy on Vista is another one; however, Bad Boy on Fairview gave us a terrible experience). As others have said, this isn't anything mind-blowing. It's a burger joint that sort of screams classic. The tiny dice on the onions (I know, potentially from a Cysco truck), the "burger sauce" (different from fry sauce), the 1/4 pound patty and the tiny, grilled slice of ham... it's all just too classic. I had a meal with the Gem Burger (standard burger with a slice of ham, lettuce and tomato... added some onion), the Tater Gems (tots that are actually deep fried), and a beverage. It was all solid! More importantly, the gentleman who helped me (he recommended my food choices) was incredibly friendly and articulate. I'll most definitely be back and, hopefully, will find a reason to give this place five stars. read more

Hmmmm.... decent, average hamburgers. I needed to pick up some lunch for the family and wanted to try a local place. Figured they have been around for over 50 years, with a line of cars on either side of the building (for take out) and would be great. Atmosphere was quiet and looks like the place hasn't been updated since the 1970's, which I think adds to the charm. Service was pretty quick. About 5 minutes to get my order. Made sure I got the fry sauce the lady behind the counter said I must have. Got the burgers home and they were ok. Not spectacular. Just ok. Thin patty with a little shredded lettuce and their house sauce. Fries were not fresh (frozen... probably Simplot) and unsalted. Now that I know what to expect, I will still go back for a cheap fix. read more
