I had a couple of NHL hockey jerseys that I wanted to get patches sewn on (vs heat pressed). I'm by no means an expert in the dynamics of stitching and sewing, but I know that sport jersey fabric requires some attention to detail due to the stretchy nature of the fabric, and that it was recommended any patches be sewn on with the zigzag pattern. Although it took a week to complete (and I was in no rush), I am highly satisfied with the work they did. I know this probably wasn't a major effort for these experts, but since this was my first time doing this you never know what to expect. Brought in a par of J.Crew chinos to get hemmed. They had a 34" inseam with a 3/4 hem. I asked for them to be hemmed just one hem's width (about 3/4-1") to bring the inseam to about 33". When I picked the up, the thread color they used way much lighter than the stitches on the rest of the pants. I asked for a redo with a thread color that was closer to the original. They re-did the stitching, but also hemmed them again, so now the inseam is just under 32" and the pants are now way too short. read more

I brought in a hanbok skirt/dress I bought from Korea that needed hemming and the straps needed to be remade as well as other adjustments. I planned to wear it to a friend's wedding without a top/jacket over it. Miss Julie knew exactly what to do once I tried on the skirt and showed me how to properly tie it as well. After discussing the alterations, I paid for the service in full and trusted that she knew what she was doing. We decided to take some sheer underskirt fabric that was going to be hemmed to make the straps with. Also added 2 snaps were added and 2 layers of the skirt were hemmed. Important to note: Julie will require you to pay up frontm She said the reason why is because she had a customer come in to have alterations done and they never picked up their order. Hours of work was wasted so I understand this. Please make sure you are ready to pay in full or put a deposit down when you are coming in to have something tailored! If alterations are not right, she will of course make it right for you at no additional cost. Once I picked up my skirt, I tried it on again in the fitting room and it was perfect! Today, I visited the shop hoping to have a jumpsuit I ordered online assessed. While the jumpsuit fit, it was clearly made for someone shorter. The legs came down to my calves instead of my ankles, and the crotch pulled tight because my torso is long. I wanted to see if the jumpsuit could be let out at the shoulders and ankles. Instead, I was body-shamed by an attendant. Upon arriving, the first attendant asked me to change into the jumpsuit. She briefly examined me and then said that the second attendant, who was helping someone in the adjacent changing room, would need to take a look as well. The second attendant assessed me and stated that I needed to take the jumpsuit off to determine if there was enough material to let it out. Once I took the jumpsuit off, the second attendant informed me that there wasn't enough material to make the adjustments. I thanked her and was starting to pack up when the first attendant returned and asked about the second attendant's assessment. I told her there wasn't enough material. The first attendant then suggested maybe considering a two-piece instead. I hesitated, as I prefer jumpsuits. The first attendant then laughed and said, "Or you could just lose weight!" Needless to say, I was shocked at her rudeness and audacity. I responded, "I've never in my life been told to lose weight." I take issue with body shaming in general, but especially in this instance for several reasons: (1) The garment was loose at the waist and hips, indicating it was closer to being too big than too small for my body. (2) I am a size 2, so suggesting I need to lose weight is absurd. (3) The issue actually stemmed from my height--I'm nearly 5'10", and the jumpsuit was clearly designed for someone much shorter. I can only conclude that J Alterations employs people who enjoy body shaming women, harbor biases against Black customers, and/or are unapologetically rude. My issue isn't that they couldn't help me; it's that they thought it was appropriate to body shame a woman who is a size 2, or really any woman for that matter. read more

They do all sorts of alterations from suits and wedding dresses to simple pant hems. So I knew the pant hems by them would have nothing to complain about. And I was right! This is the place to do whatever alterations you need. I even brought in my motorcycle jeans and tried to move up the kneepad. They can do anything. I also like the pricing. Took several dresses to them and they do a great job and I'd you're not satisfied they'll redo it until it's fixed. The only issue I had was when the measurements for alterations was taken by the younger woman who works there. I purchased some scrub uniforms that were improperly fitted. I needed two pants shortened and three tops required velcro patches sewn on for my uniform. The store was open to walk-ins so I talked to the worker about what I needed done and the woman who assisted me was very helpful. She helped me measure my pant length so that she could accurately adjust it and sorted everything out. She spoke both English and Korean, so communication shouldn't be an issue. The store was also very clean and tidy, with an area in the front for measuring/sizing and register. They do require you to prepay for your order and my clothes were ready for pick up by the next week. The price I was quoted was much cheaper than a lot of other stores I had phoned. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience and would definitely recommend J Alteration to others! read more

Between a last minute a dress shirt, pants and handkerchief alterations the team was able finish everything the day of our event. Prices here are reasonable. Bought a cheap satin dress from ASOS which needed a lot of alteration as it was loose and also the straps were in incorrect position for my body. (Think criss cross straps on an open back dress) As soon as I put it on, she knew exactly what to do. We didn't need to talk much as she told me what needs to be done (I love that bc I honestly have no idea). She told me she will take it in and adjust the straps (and also to shorten it as I'm short). Turnaround time was reasonable (about a week) and the prices were also pretty fair ($25-$35 for dress shirt alterations & $40-$55 for suit alterations). I've had bad experiences at other shops for alterations at a cheaper rate so I'd rather pay more for better quality and avoid any problems. Based on other positive reviews, I took an evening gown to J Alterations to be slightly taken in. While I was there having it pinned, Julie noted that there was a hole below the zipper where the stitching had come loose. She said that she would fix it, and I hadn't checked when I picked up the gown to see if she had because I was in a hurry. Upon trying the gown on at home, I was very disappointed to see that she hadn't fixed it. The rest of the gown fits better, but I can't give five stars for this service, which was just as expensive (if not more) than other local tailors that I have frequented. Had everything that she charged me for been done and the dress returned as promised, I would have rated higher. She also tried to return my gown on a wire hanger instead of the velvet hanger it was brought in on in its garment bag. When I asked what happened to my hanger, she disappeared and returned with another hanger that was not the right one and which my gown slips off of. read more

Honestly neither of us could imagine how this was going to happen and not have the look of the dress changed.
