Decided to have our Anniversary dinner at J's since, we hadn't visited in a while. We by passed the appetizers and went straight to dinner. I had to get the steak maui with smashed potatoes and Alex's salad which was absolutely delish! My husband selected the cajun trout with butter sauce and pecans over rice with a side of coleslaw. Nice menu, the salads are great and I love the prime rib..I also go for the seared Ahi tuna..bathrooms are very nice and are always well kept as one would expect in a place like this..very good wine list complete with paring suggestions throughout the menu..the bar is surfaced with a very nice marble, and the barmaid, my guest, and myself all witnessed a paranormal experience as my wine glass moved across the marble bar top on its own about six inches! Turns out this place was built on a lot where a funeral home once stood..then I go out to start my car and it will not start... then I try calling a tow service and my phone won't work...wow! Aside from the trippy stuff, this place is a definite go for me..perfect for that special night out. read more

I dine at JAlexander's regularly for busines and feel there are many, many better restartants in Toledo. The food is good. I recently had one of the best caesar salads I have have had in a long time. It was very garlicky, but I love garlic. (That said, it was the creamy garlic dressing, not the traditional kind.) Other food quality varies from excellent to OK. Unfortunately, though, JAlexander's is overpriced for the service and quality of food. The service is such that you may never see the same waiter staff member twice, as they use a team approach. This translates into miscues and special orders being bungled. Orders come out in a haphazard manner, with people not being servedat the same time. Sometimes the entree might even come out before the salad. The drink prices are among the highest in the city, and the pours are measured very conservatively. read more

The carrot cake is to die for. Get it to go if you do not have room to eat it before you leave. Most of the time when I go there, the server memorizes our order (!?!??) AND remembers who ordered what once it came time to be served!! Some other faves are the orzo (side) and cosmos (drink). I usually order the salmon and have never been disappointed. read more

I realize this is a franchise but I don't care! Does not have the atmosphere or character of a franchise in my opinion. Service is always impeccable and the tables spotless. Easily accomodate families will still feeling upscale. Round booths at the bar sort of feel like a private party. The menu is interesting and appeals to a lot of different tastes. Probably the only place in Toledo that services a grilled artichoke as an appetizer. I dream of the artichoke. Carrot cake is phenomenal too. My Grandma loves the key lime pie. read more

The J. Alexander's chain likes to consider themselves a bit of an upscale dining experience, though in Toledo, you will not find it. Seems like every time we visit - which isn't all that often - the results are the same. And that is, pretty good food (not great, and wildly overpriced) and pretty bad service. Last night, when the service was so bad we actually said something to the manager, the response was complete disinterest. We came in 90 minutes before closing, and all the workers were already focused on their closing duties, not customers. There were hardly any people in the restaurant and our waiter could not have been more inattentive. If you want to overpay for slightly above average food and bad service, then J. Alexander's is your place. read more

I usually avoid chain restaurants but I am definitely a fan of J. Alexanders! The food is always great and the drink are heaft pours. My only critiques: 1. Stop drowning the salads in dressing 2. I tried this place because I was shopping and heard about it. We both ordered fillet mignon, I ordered loaded baked potato and my wife ordered smashed potatoes, the cook on mine was medium rare which the cook was good, my wife order medium, when she cut into it the cook was more rare then mine. After waiting a little while for our server my wife alerted her to the temperature and she took it back to the kitchen, when the server brought it back, she place it in front of my wife and apologized then walked away. When she cut into the steak it was beyond well, chard on the outside and dry in the center. She was hungry and tried to eat it but she didn't care for the cook or flavor, she said it just taste burnt. The server came back about 10 minutes later and asked if she would like a container and my wife told her she did not care for it because it was burnt. The server took her plate then brought us the bill. I am disappointed that no one came to our table or the servers at that point. We paid our bill then left. I just don't understand why a manager would not have visited out table after the first issue. It is unfortunate this happened and my wife was upset and hungry when we left. She was also convicted the same mashed potatoes came back because they were cold and she would not eat them. I would suggest that if a server removes a plate with only 2 bites from the steak and the potatoes not touched, a manager should visit the table. As of right now I would not recommend your restaurant and would share my thoughts to anyone who would mention your restaurant. I do understand issues happen, I am a chef and know the drill, that's what upset us the most. I truly hope you're management address this issue and put a system in place to prevent this from happening to another guest. Thank you. read more

Service slipping. When I lived in Toledo, I used to eat here at least three times a week so when I am back in town I usually stop here. The food and service are consistent,which makes it the best chain restaurant in Toledo. I am a get in and get out guy so I frequently eat at the bar. This time, I sat down, got the scripted welcome with a menu and then the bartender ignored me for 10 minutes. I placed a to-go order at the same time as my meal and they must not have put it in until I was ready to leave as I had to wait another 10 minutes. And the bar was empty. For my money, the best middle-priced steakhouse in Toledo. While it is typically crowded and the parking lot is too small, my wife and I love to eat there. The only thing keeping it from being 5 stars is their selection of cuts is too small. The steak is excellent and cooked to perfection, but I would like to order a porterhouse or a filet that is larger than a piece of salmon. read more

Food- Outstanding. I had the prime rib and it was made exactly to my specifications. The food was served hot. Presentation was non-existent but that is ok as the food made up for it. Service- nice but server wasn't very knowledgeable about the drinks or food. We were seated in a booth in the bar area thus one would think the servers would know there drinks....server didn't know what a dry white wine meant and when one of the people asked for a martini she asked if she wanted it dirty. My friend asked what that meant and she didn't know. For the type of ambiance and the food I think the girl waiting on us was well out of her league. The ambiance is really nice. Like another person stated, you can go dressed up or casual and will feel comfortable either way. The noise level was very minimal and the lighting fantastic. Woud I go back? Absolutely. Why?
