Florence is struggling to return to the level of service that was pre-COVID. This restaurant seems to be effected by this problem as well. As a part-time resident of Southern California, this type of cuisine is widely available with excellent options at reasonable prices. As such, we are accustomed to a higher quality of both service and food. Ixtapa has an extensive menu, but most of the offerings share a similar flavor profile and pedestrian preparation. Sauces were good, but not great, chips could have been prepared off-site and my guess is that the freezer is where most of the ingredients come from. Our order needed to be corrected twice, and even after the second time, it STILL was not as we had requested - we gave up trying to make it right. Given that there was a skeleton crew working on Tuesday at about 1 in the afternoon - keeping orders straight seemed to be difficult. Our waiter disappeared for long periods (perhaps helping in the kitchen) but making it hard to address needs. We never received a refill on chips, iced tea (which had a funky aftertaste) or even a courtesy check. Disappointing. The carpet needed attention, and the general appearance of the restaurant is tired and dated. Realistically, this venue is good for modest Mexican cuisine, but keep your expectations low (do not be influenced by their website) Perhaps they will be able to lift quality and service as Florence recovers from the pandemic. We paid about $40 for two meals and one iced tea including the tip. We will give Ixtapa another try down the line, although we will be checking out some of the other Mexican restaurants in the meantime. read more

So good! I'd been looking for a really solid, old school, chips and salsa sit down Tex Mex place. They seem to be dying out and being replaced by counter service taquerias. This place was exactly what I was looking for. The Ixtapa Burrito and the Chile Verde were my favorites. (I went a couple times, I didn't eat all that in one sitting!). We love Mexican food so were excited to try this. We should have known by the appearance outside. The menu looked great but the prices were ridiculous for this place. Compared to the night before at the Waterfront depot... we were shocked. We split the Crema and chimichanga. Both were nothing special. Portion sizes were on the small size. The margarita was like a kool aid slushy. I usually don't prefer to write negative reviews but this is one to be avoided. I will say our server was pleasant and very good. Had the prices not have been so much, I would have said it was okay. The meals of combos were 18-24 .00! The salsa was generous but mostly like tomato sauce with a bit of cilantro. read more

We saw that Ixtapa had mole, and we love mole, so we decided to try theirs while in Florence yesterday. We both could not believe how delicious it was! We got it to go, drive down to near the river and sat and ate. The portions were generous, everything was very yummy and fresh. The bead, rice, tortillas and especially the chicken and mole were perfectly prepared and amazing for being to go food. They have figured this out, they know how to make delicious food under all the crazy constraints of the rules of the lockdown. For Mexican food on the Oregon coast, this place does it well! We travel to Mexico yearly and in my opinion the food is similar to what we've had in Mexico. I realize there are variations depending on what part of the country you are in but it feels like this restaurant is trying to encompass a variety of the country's food varieties. Not as good as the reviews on Yelp. Rather disappointed. Service is fair, waitress is a bit short and in a hurry. Got the food quick but I guess it's not busy so that helps. I got Cameron's Monterey. This is my staple mex food. This was the worst I ever had and I've had it a lot. I got a super small portion of shrimp and barely any veggies. I don't get rice and beans, I get salad. But yes, yes I still pay full price. It would be 1 star but wife's food was good. Off the list to come back. In fact I'm hitting McDonald's to finish filling the gut. We ordered "seafood" chimichangas and the only seafood inside was imitation crab. In addition, there were "bonus" pieces of 1" pieces pork fat in the sauce. It is not listed as an ingredient on the menu. This was not an issue for me but my partner is pescatarian. Fortunately she is not allergic to pork or has religious issues with the consumption of it. Maybe I just don't like Mexican anymore, but this was one of the worst. We don't like spicy, we asked if anything was, they said No. However, everything was very spicy even the rice and beans. We all know that opinions vary.... but I'll put this one out and walk away. Nachos Mexican Restaurant, in Eugene (out of business for years now), had THE BEST nachos available. You can tell I'm still a little salty about the closure. LOL But now moving on to a relevant eatery... Ixtapa, in this case. I stopped here because every place in town was packed on the NYE, and because I love Mexican food, and because I'm adventurous like that. I wasn't disappointed. I thought the service was second-to-none. They were absolutely slammed and somehow still managed to get me all the additional drinks and sides I asked for, quickly. I had their biggest plate of nachos and found it to be just right in size, delicious, and not at all expensive. The beef was yummy. I'll be eating here again, when in Florence and craving Mexican.
