His son moved to Dearborn in the 80's and opened up Masri Sweets, bringing Nablus style Knafeh which is known the world over. It's my favorite thing to eat here. They still carry on in the Palestinian tradition. Samples are handed out generously. You want a piece of pastry which might be $2 or $3 somewhere else, no problem. Take 2. Palestinian culture has historically been very generous with food. Guests never leave without eating, and strangers are always welcomed. What cynical irony that food is currently being used as a weapon of war against these people. I sometimes wonder if their hospitality wasn't their Achilles heel. If you're in Dearborn, head over to Masri sweets to experience not only world class Knafeh, but maybe some of that famous Palestinian hospitality.

I am not sure if they produce mass quantities of products. Some of the parties were pretty to look at. I didn't buy any because it was so late in the day and I know it's would be a little stale by then. So it looks nice, clean, hospitable staff, not really knowledgeable. They do offer cappuccinos and espressos in addition to fresh brewed coffees. Gonna have to set my alarm to get out earlier to try one of these pastries fresh!

Customer service and friendliness were beyond excellent; but be sure to pack your patience at peak times because this spot was slammed. You take a number when you walk in, and then wait, and wait, and wait for it to be your turn. This isn't for lack of staff, because there were at least a dozen people working behind the counter, it's just because they were packed with customers! The selections are overwhelming and since it was my first visit, I needed help. The young lady who helped me was very patient, told me about the differences in their specialized Arabic pastries, showed me her favorites, customer favorites, and descriptions for anything I asked about. I went with a small sampler tray of her favorite specialized pastries and their best sellers. Everything was delicious! Flavors, textures, uniqueness, complexity...all of it. My whole family raved about all the treats, so we ended up going back later in the weekend and purchasing a couple larger trays of our favorites (and some new selections) to take home and share. We all agreed that the Qatayef was easily our favorite; for anyone who doesn't know, it is a small pancake filled with custard, fresh chopped strawberries, chopped pistachios, and drizzled with chocolate...fresh, bright, and mouthwateringly delicious. The only negative I experienced was that when I visited around 10am on Sunday to load up for our trip home, their selections were very limited, and I was told I'd need to come back after 3pm to get some of the things I was looking for. So, I would recommend calling ahead to see if they have a full selection before you go, if you don't live nearby. Ultimately, if you haven't tried Dearborn Sweets, I'd highly recommend giving them a shot. They have tons of middle eastern specialties as well as traditional bakery favorites (such as cannoli, fruit tarts, filled donuts, cakes, etc.).

Since those two Yelp events, I've been back to the bakery several times to try its cupcakes and savory items, like the dill soup, which is so delicious and comes with cornbread. I'd love to see more savory meals offered. One drawback is that Homestead has limited hours which is why I've only been back several times. Walk-in hours right now are Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 9am-3pm. The rest of the time it's open for special events and orders made in advance which you can do on its website. Also, you can only order one flavor of cupcake on the website, not a variety of flavors. It would be nice to see more flavors offered like the buttercream flavors I tried at the Yelp event as well as expanded hours for the bakery.

We also found out that a car had slammed in to their building on Father's Day while they were inside filling custom cake orders. Thank goodness nobody was injured. Once they were fixed, they had to rush to do the best work they could in the short amount of time they had. Although cake did taste good and all the other items were great, she definitely can not make a wedding cake.
