I took my dad to Masri Sweets in Dearborn today. I love this place not only for their delicious Knafeh (Nabulsi style no less), but for the atmosphere. The founder is from Nablus, Palestine, where the original pastry shop opened in 1902. My dad knew the original owner. His son moved to Dearborn in the 80's and opened up Masri Sweets, bringing Nablus style Knafeh which is known the world over. It's my favorite thing to eat here. They still carry on in the Palestinian tradition. Samples are handed out generously. You want a piece of pastry which might be $2 or $3 somewhere else, no problem. Take 2. Palestinian culture has historically been very generous with food. Guests never leave without eating, and strangers are always welcomed. What cynical irony that food is currently being used as a weapon of war against these people. I sometimes wonder if their hospitality wasn't their Achilles heel. Visiting from SF and this was part of our Detroit food crawl! Delicious knafeh; lives up to the fame. Love that they separate the syrup, it's thin and not overwhelming. Exquisite. I love Masri Sweets. It's my go-to. I don't go to any other Arab sweets unless I am out of state. Everything is always fresh and delicious, even if you come within an hour of closing. This time, the service really disappointed me. Usually, the staff is the same anywhere, slightly awkward but helpful. The owners are fantastic. the young man who helped me had a very rude demeanor despite me being nice. I don't know if he had a bad or a long day but he had a really bad attitude. I ordered almost $90 of Kunafa and assorted cakes which is what I usually do..I ask the staff to assort the cakes for me and he was being so rude about it? "I don't want to assort it incase you come back and complain about not liking it..." and I casually told him that' will not be an issue because I always do this, I never come back to complain even if I don't like it , and it's for a guest. General feedback, it will not hurt you to adjust your tone. Regardless, I will keep coming back despite his energy, I will just ask to wait for another staff member. read more

My fiancée is from Palestine was craving sweets from home so we made the drive to Dearborn from Ann Arbor just to try this place, and all the desserts were on point. The freshly made knafeh was especially amazing. Above all, the staff were all super friendly and one man in particular made it his mission to make sure we felt taken care of since it was our first time there. I have been ordering from this place for over 15 years. I have technically ordered hundreds of boxes for clients gifts too. However after receiving my latest order a week ago I can say that the place has changed. The quality is not the same as it used to be. The Burma tasted burned. It was so dry and so hard to eat. They don't pick up the phones or reply to emails any more. I remember the days where customer service was so important to them. I used to work with Suzanne who was the owner and the desserts were so delicious along with an amazing customer service. Masri Sweets in Dearborn has pretty much everything you need to satisfy your sweet tooth. The best thing is that these sweets are all handmade, natural, no chemicals or preservatives and keep for awhile. The shoppe has a very welcoming entrance and you can sit st a table and have a treat over to the side. Cakes, cookies, candies, pastries, and baklava by the slice, pound or tray. Gift boxed or just plain, they'll let you decide how you want it packaged. We were helped by Hawraa and Fatma. They were so friendly and helped us pick really nice treats out. They took special care to wrap the sweets really good so they'd make it back to Chicago without any damage. All the sweet items were delicious and full of nuts and or lightly sweetened cheese and other goodies! We loved all the sweets but I especially loved the wrapped cookie that was packed with ground nuts galore! You don't find those in too many places. I saw Masri Sweets on Food Network a few years ago and made it a point to visit when I returned to my husband's home state of Michigan. The young lady behind the counter was friendly and very helpful. Luckily she guided me away from some of the treats my daughter initially thought about trying due to possible nut allergy cross contamination. My daughter was happy with the ice cream selection. I came for the kanafa which was the best I have ever had! I also purchased a chocolate cannoli and baklava which was beautifully wrapped to go. The baklava was ok but the cannoli cream was to die for. This place is worth the hype! Plenty of parking and easy to find. Interior dining area was clean. I was in Michigan for the first time and wanted to visit Dearborn to try Arab desserts, so a friend recommended Masri Sweets to me. I went on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't busy. The lady behind the counter was helpful in explaining the different types of pastries. I wanted to try both the regular (cheese) knafeh and the ashta (cream) knafeh, but they don't keep a batch of the ashta one to dole out by the slice the way they do the regular knafeh. Instead, you can order a small or large tray of it, so I ordered the small tray for $20. After a brief wait, my made-to-order tray of asha knafeh came out packed in a lovely golden box. I had underestimated the size of the small tray because it was actually huge: I brought it to my boyfriend's extended family dinner and it easily fed 8 people and still had half left over. The knafeh was decadent, light and sweet but not overly sweet, and it was a hit with everyone. None of us had tried knafeh before, so it was gratifying that everyone was so impressed by it. Definitely use the syrup that they pack on the side because the knafeh isn't sweet without it. As for the regular cheese knafeh, I wasn't expecting to like it because I'm the weirdo who doesn't like cheese, but it was really pleasant! I don't know the next time I'll be in Michigan, but I'm going to be dreaming about the ashta knafeh until I return. Thank you to Masri Sweets for the lovely experience! P.S. Boyfriend's grandma loved both types of knafeh and said you can tell that the bakery is really classy because of the beautiful box they packed the knafeh tray in. This place has always been on my food bucket list for the kunafa and I finally got to try it today. It definitely lives up to the hype! The service was also exceptionally fast and friendly. They even threw in a free piece of baklava with my order just to be nice. While the baklava is "ok", the kunafa is the real star of the show here. Putting oozy cheese in a dessert honestly didn't sound very appetizing to me, but this definitely works and is simply amazing. Everyone should try it before they die. read more

Whatever the quality of their sweets, do not try ordering online. We live in Jordan and so rely upon online ordering for sending Eid sweets to family in the US and Canada. First, my stepdaughter placed an order for a gift for a colleague. She had to contact Masri Sweets several times before they finally produced and shipped it. Of course, it arrived late. After that, about a week ago, I made two orders within minutes of each other, each to a separate address (my daughter's family and my son's), with the idea that they would be delivered in time for Eid. The second order was produced and shipped timely. The first was charged ($50), but apparently never produced or shipped. I have contacted Masri Sweets customer service by email four times with no answer. Obviously, ordering online is hazardous. If you want reliable, timely delivery with responsive customer service, use Texas-based Lunaria Sweets. Do not attempt online ordering from Masri Sweets. I've been ordering from them for years with never a problem. I only switched to Masri Sweets because my wife said that they make the best maamoul. Never again. Oh sweet!!! Price is reasonable! Friendly servers and cashiers. Overwhelming selection of sweets. I wish they put labels on each item for the name, ingredients and price so we don't have to ask what it is all the time ;-). Don't know the items but tasted good. For sure, the green stuff is pistachio and white stuff is made of cream. Diabetic? No problem. They have sugar free options. Service water is available. Dining area is clean and widely available when you want to stay and eat the sweet stuff right away. You pick the item, they put in a styro plate and covered in plastic wrap. The final packaging looks nice. The server/cashier totals the items...we end up paying $17 worth of sweets with 4 pcs of samples, with lots of sesame seeds. Reminds me of eating butchi (fried dough balls with beans or taro filling) from a Chinese restaurant. Lots of free parking at the back entrance. Restrooms are clean. Accepts cash or credit. Although I'm not very good at knowing the names of the Middle Eastern treats, I can tell you that everyone I tried was delicious!! As suggested by others, I tried the Kunafa and it was amazing!
