I have to give massive, enormous thanks and credit to Zain, because while the place he sent me to (the rival, Shatila) was excellent, if he hadn't sent me there, I wouldn't have discovered their cross-burb rival here in Dearborn, Masri, and I wouldn't have come here late night to give them a try. And it totally changed my life, and I will be eternally grateful to Zain for that. He just needs to contact me to claim his reward. Shame I couldn't bring the heels girl here (yet). When I do it'll be Masri Feets. Or Masri Teats? So, when I got to Masri, there was a long delay for fresh Kanafa, and plenty of people waiting even close to closing time. Those serving were really, really nice and told me what to order along with the incomparable deliciousness known as the famous Kanafa. Everything was really delicious, but nothing and I mean nothing on Earth can come close to the gooey dreamy perfect warmth of the Kanafa. If it was a butcher shop, it'd be Masri Meats, and if it sold bedding, it'd be Masri Sheets. If they sold chairs, Masri Seats, and if they sold Greeting Cards, maybe Masri Greets. If they were owned by Townshend and Parker (spiderman) they'd me Masri Pete's, whereas if Amanda owned it, it'd be Masri Peets. But it's not. It's up in Dearborn but even if you're nowhere near Dearborn it's worth a massive detour to get here and enjoy this heavenly perfection. I would probably drive hours out of my way to get one. Everyone that shared one with me has said it was one of the best things they've ever tasted. Make sure you get here and try it as soon as possible. The number one place to stop in Detroit. A family-favorite of ours for many many years, especially as gifts for family and friends. It's the perfect size, affordable, and great quality! Pros: lots of variety, friendly employees, good quality Cons: can get very busy and unorganized at times During normal times, my review would be a 5, but the reason for the 3 stars is because there were multiple workers in the store with no mask on. Some with a mask on but bunched under their chin and others with no mask at all. It really irks me when employees don't wear masks and makes me think that they don't care about their customers or workers safety. In some ways this is the Krispy Kreme of Kanafeh. What's missing is the "HOT FRESH NOW" neon sign. But that's the killer app of Masri Sweets. Why settle for a slice of pretty good kanafeh, that's microwaved on a plastic plate? If you are in Dearborn, you don't have to eat second best. The good folks at Masri have hot batches coming out all the time. And there is nothing quite like watching them cut you a square off that crispy, melty, and sweet motherlode. Do you want pistachios on that? Heck yeah! It feels like it could take a lifetime to figure out which Arabic sweet shops make the best treats. While it may be a delicious mystery to unravel, I'm afraid my metabolism couldn't quite keep up. What is very clear, is that the kunafeh at Masri Sweets is the best one I've ever had. My new favorite in Dearborn. For me, the pastries are not overly sweet - just right. They are nicely balanced and tasty. I haven't tried the European pastries, but *everything* else I've had has been on point. In particular, I like the ballorieh, burma and mamoul. The service is also just wonderful. They'll often give you a cookie or cup of tea for the road. Nice folks. They are quick, friendly and neat. Pricing is also good - particularly if you purchase by the tray. We so Love this place the very best in Dearborn a must try. Kanafeh is a traditional Palestinian dessert made with cheese pastry soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup. It is popular throughout the Arab world, especially in the Levant and Egypt, principally in the West Bank. In addition in Turkey, the Caucasus and Greece. If there's one dessert that rules as the Queen of Arabic sweets, I would nominate Kunafe Nabulsia, the sticky pastry made of gooey sweet cheese sandwiched between layers of shredded kunafe pastry. If you need treats for any special occasion, I would recommend here as well. It's bigger than Lebon sweets, and IMO has the BEST kunafeh. I enjoy their version because theres's not too much of a sweet top layer. On a side note, the cookies are also to die for. I also love their attention to detail in their packaging. All of their boxes and bags look very presentable. Prices are worth the quality you will get here. Also, for people that aren't familiar with middle eastern treats, I would recommend the staff here to help. They are very accommodating and friendly. This is the spot that made me fall in love with kunafah and also spoiled me because my standards are now way too high now for kunafah. The space is big- great for bringing a group of friends. They serve other deserts as well- they also have boxed ready gifts full of different sweets as well. The kunafah is constantly made so it is always fresh, it has the perfect cheese pull and they also provide extra sugar syrup. I personally don't think you need it- I think it's perfect as is but I've had it before with the extra sugar syrup and it is amazingggg. Two samples here on the long day of eating on our Bizarre Foods Detroit trip. They have a delicious spread of options for viewing. Make sure you walk around to check out all the desserts. We tried two: Knafeh and Katayef. When we were ready to order knafeh, there was only one piece left and they told us if we waited a few minutes, a fresh hot batch will be ready. If you have the opportunity to wait for fresh ones that come right off the stove, take advantage of it. When it's fresh and hot, the cheese is wonderfully stringy and the whole dish is nice and sweet from the syrup. Although, it wasn't as sweet as I thought it was going to be. I wouldn't categorize it as a dessert. It's topped with crushed pistachios for extra flavor, texture, and appearance. The end result, its gooey, sweet, and crunchy. A good combo. The katayef really doesn't stack up to the knashef. It is not bad but really doesn't offer the level of flavor nor complexity of the knafeh. I guess its not fair to compare them since they are so different, but when your eating them side by side, its hard not to. It's a small stuffed pancake but really not as nicely sweet as the other. read more
