2025 Update: They still taste great, they still seem to get annoyed with any basic questions like, "What are the little pockets filled with?" And customer service still seems pretty quick. We will easily drop a hundred, minimum, each time with visit, which is multiple times during our annual michigan trip. If you want to experience discrimination, come here. I took two numbers and waited patiently while multiple other customers were helped ahead of me. Each time my number should have been called, it was skipped. I asked for assistance several times, and all three employees behind the counter told me to "wait" while they stood there talking. It was frustrating and embarrassing. I am a Christian Catholic and was wearing a cross necklace that was clearly visible. The staff looked directly at me multiple times, including at my cross, and still continued to skip over me. Whether intentional or not, the situation made me feel singled out and discriminated against because of my faith. No customer should ever feel that way when walking into a business. read more

Visited here on a Saturday night at 10pm last week and the place was CROWDED! Service is fast here even with so many people visiting. It's a Mediterranean bakery with lots of space to sit and eat. They have shakes, ice cream and coffee as well. When you enter you have to grab a token # and then place your order. Then a person helps you out with everything that you need from behind the counter. Visited here on a friend's recommendation, and also after seeing it on Padma Lakshmi's "Taste the Nation." WOW. For starters, the cafe is super clean and attractive with live palms and lots of light. The counter is divided between French and Middle Eastern pastries, both absolutely gorgeous. SO many choices, it was nearly impossible to make decisions. We wanted a taste of authentic Middle Eastern items - mostly variations of flaky phyllo dough, nuts and honey. The server's English was a bit limited, which made ordering a tiny bit challenging. I would have loved signage explaining each confection, but I certainly appreciate that I'm not the main audience and this place is really intended to serve the local Middle Eastern community. After my kiddo and I assembled a box of sweet and savory items (for only $13!!!! WHAT???), I grabbed a coffee and we simply sat and nibbled to our hearts' content. The baklava seemed to be a signature offering, but my favorite was a deep-fried doughy empanada-ish item that tasted like a honey-soaked donut filled with cheese. So amazing. Sweet dreams are made of SHATILA! The best baklava around. For first timers, there are no lines. Make sure to take a ticket when you walk in and listen for your number to be called, or look towards the ceiling in the middle of the bakery shelves where there's a small screen displaying what number they're on. Don't be alarmed if the current number seems far away from the number on your ticket. It moves pretty fast, even on busy days. The system has been this was as long as I can remember, and seems like it really works for them. Find the person who calls your number and they will help you select and package up your treats. Today I found out they have an assortment of sugar-free baklava as well! The sugar substitute they use is lycasin (maltitol syrup). This is a nice alternative option for people who can't digest sugar well. There's also ice cream, both in cones and to take home in large cartons, and cakes, both full size and individual pieces. There's seating inside if you want to break into your goodies right away. A box of Shatila makes an excellent gift as well! read more

We got the sweets and packed them in our suitcase (which was of course thrown around in the airport) so we were dreading the worst when we opened the sweets' paper bag. Shatila Bakery in Dearborn is an absolute must try if you're visiting Michigan! Be prepared for a mass of people as soon as you walk through the door. This place is always busy... and for good reason! The middle eastern pastries here are DIVINE. I recently discovered that they have different desserts made in slightly different methods to reflect how they are traditionally prepared in various Arab countries. My favorite things to get are the pastries made with dates, pistachio and walnuts! During Ramadan and other Muslim holidays they have an even broader selection!! All of the pastries are baked to perfection and always so fresh and flavorful. I also really love their ice cream! They offer very unique flavors such as rose water and pistachio, and incorporate ingredients that are part of their traditional pastries. Despite the inevitable crowd, the service is always super fast and you're usually able to order shortly after picking up a ticket and waiting in line. There's also plenty of seating which makes it a great spot fora coffee date. The one thing I don't like about this bakery is their French inspired / more "American" desserts. The cakes that I've tried have been dense, dry, lacking in flavor and sometimes even seemed a bit stale or old. That's the only reason why I'm not giving this place 5 stars. read more

Shatila is a must if you're ever visiting Metro Detroit! They have the best, authentic Middle Eastern pastries. So good and renowned for their treats, I've seen them sold at Plum Markets far away from Dearborn. Shatila is usually packed on weekends. The last time I went was a weeknight and not really a line. My favorites to order are the baklava, mamoul, and knafeh. I really appreciate how they pack a separate, small container of the syrup for the knafeh so it doesn't get soggy before you're ready to eat it. I love the interior of Shatila - there are tall palm trees and lights that make for a cozy ambiance to enjoy your sweets under. One day, I would love to try one of their very decadent looking cakes. I was impressed by the decorating on this gorgeous cake the last time I visited, especially the large white chocolate peony on top (see pic). Love Shatila, will definitely be back! read more
