Came here on a recommendation as it has been there for years, but we ended up disappointed. The fish and chips were bland and no where near the best ones I have had. We also had the small shrimp which were nothing to brag about. The sauces to dip them in are not fresh and come in pre-packaged containers. The batter for everything fried was lacking flavor, but maybe that is how they like it in Seattle. It was a ridiculous amount of food but I wanted to try a bit of everything since we were there. That said we also tried the clam chowder because I love clam chowder and was curious to see how it was in Seattle (I do not think this was a good representation of Seattle clam chowder). It was so thick that it was unappetizing. The flavor was not that great either, but I'm sure if it was just a little thinner it would have helped tremendously. Heard Ivars is a must as a Seattle tourist. We got the salmon and chips, fish & chips (cod) and fried clams. I also got a large iced tea. The cured tea I got was non sweetened and very refreshing, not too bitter. They have pre packaged Ivar's tartar sauce and ketchup. The first thing I noticed was the fries/chips were very nutty in terms of taste, I believe they fry them in a peanut oil, it remind me a lot of five guys fries. If you like that peanutty after taste you will love these, for me it was big strong after a serving of series. The cod was pretty juicy. The salmon was drier than the cod so I personally don't think it's worth it for the extra price. The tartar sauce is decent, nothing special read more

Wow, 6 years ago we came by this place for the first time and I gave a five star review, even now remembering how great the fish and chowder was. We were excited to return after all these years and granted it has been 6 years, we did not expect such a drastic change. And this place sure has drastically changed to become a disgusting bleep bleep bleep. Bad words omitted. The counter is disgusting, pieces of fish, sauces, trash all over the place. The employees are all a joke, kids messing around without a care in the world. None of the seating seems to be cared for either. We ordered the salmon fish and chips, and boy was it a mistake to even consider coming back. The fries were soggy, stale, gross. The fish was absolutely horrible, disgusting, nasty. The salmon was fishy with a terrible odor, it was overly fried, disgustingly salty batter, the whole thing was dry, we almost threw it up. The chowder was quite literally, "clammy" - so fishy and way too soupy for "chowder". It was disappointing to say the least. Pretty good. The white clam chowder (In a bread bowl of course!) was really good. The fish and chips were okay, we expected the portion to be bigger. Feels more like a chain than a local restaurant but we appreciated how easy it was to order and how it was east to social distance. Next time I want to try the salmon chowder. read more

A MUST go to! Hubby and I were on our 10 year wedding anniversary and we were strolling along the water and window shopping and ran into this place. What caught my eye was the outdoor dining along the water. It was pretty busy I'm assuming because a cruise ship was docked near by so we thought we would take a chance and see if it would be a long wait. The kind hostess told us there was no issue with seating us and it would be a 20 min wait. About 15 min later she seated us outside. We noticed our waiter had alot of tables but that didn't stop him from acknowledging us right when we were seated. I ordered a refreshing tropical cocktail that was pink with sugar along the rim. To eat we stared of with bread and butter which was 2 small mini loves and for our main dish I ordered the 2 piece Halibut Fish N Chips and my hubby ordered the 3 piece Cod Fiah N Chips. My step daughter highly recommended the sit down restaurant but the fish bar better suited our needs in between a visit to the aquarium and a harbor tour. Service was great. The popcorn shrimp was perfectly cooked. My stepdaughter complained that it felt slimy but she's probably just used to rubbery overcooked shrimp because it wasn't slimy, just surprisingly plump and juicy. My husband wasn't impressed with his chicken tenders. I tried them. They weren't bad, but c'mon, it's a fish bar. In Seattle. Get seafood. Servings are generous. My only complaint is that the fries could have used more seasoning. Maybe it's because people like to feed them to the seagulls, who are surprisingly respectful of personal space. I totally expected to lose a finger after my experience with seagulls in San Diego, especially since these seagulls expected us to feed them, but nope, one particular seagull and I approached each other very cautiously. Your classic touristy food spot which is right along the pier/waterfront of Seattle. It's not bad and a great place to grab quick lunch while being able to sit near the water. For the price and quality, it's about fair. I opted for the 4 piece (half cajun, half regular) for about $11.30. Next time, I may just opt for full cajun. If you like a kick, I'd highly recommend it for an extra 0.60 or so. Can't go wrong if you're nearby but not exactly a place you go out to seek for. read more

A very popular eatery, long lines but moves quick. There is an enclosed sitting area where you could go eat. Your basic fish and chips, clam chowder. They also have the fancier dine in restaurant next door. We ended up doing the combo of 3 piece Alaskan cod fish and chips, a bowl of clam chowder and a drink. The fish was just ok, it was piping hot and the kid ended up eating all the French fries. The clam chowder was pretty good with the nice smoked bacon flavor. Let me just start by saying that 2 weeks ago, I watched Food Network's Throwdown with Bobby Flay, and the dish of focus was fish 'n chips. Now ever since watching that episode, I have been craving fish 'n chips like nobody's business. This is to the extent that I dreamt about it (read: this craving is serious). Thank you, Ivar's, for satisfying my humongous fish 'n chips craving! The fried Alaskan cod was light, fresh, and completely satisfying. Should you desire other fishies, Ivar's also offers salmon or halibut 'n chips. Don't fret if you're not feeling the fish either. Clams, oysters, shrimp, and chicken - check, check, check and check. For the calorie counters out there, the menus flaunt exactly how much "energy" you get from each offering. 600 calories for a 4 piece fish 'n chips? Not horrible. Besides, even if you don't or can't finish your order, there are plenty of seagulls on the pier that would be more than willing to snarf your leftover bits 'n pieces. Need more encouragement? There's a sign on the dock that says "Do not be afraid of overfeeding. Seagulls are dainty eaters." If by dainty, the sign means rabid, I agree. read more

Nothing beats eating fish than when you're on the pier and lo and behold, there's fresh fish underneath you. They don't really have many options but I got the Cajun fish and chips. Came for dinner during the pandemic (summer 2021) so the menu was a bit more limited than I guess it is usually? Setting/COVID: Lovely patio overlooking the water. Lots of outdoor seating. Food: We tried the calamari, the stone fruit salad, the salmon tacos, the clams in white wine appetizer, and the cod fish and chips. The only thing I wouldn't order again was the salmon tacos - the chunks of salmon were dry and under-seasoned. The clams and the stone fruit salad were both very good. I enjoyed the fish and chips too but you need to ask for malt vinegar (mandatory IMO). Drinks: Mixed drinks got good reviews from my dinner companions. They didn't have the Oregon Pinot gris I ordered but the Washington rose I got instead was nice and served at the right temperature. I have been Ivar once a couple years ago. I still remember how good the clam chowder was. We went back today again and the soup reminded me of my last trip there. The size of jumbo shrimp is decent. They are quite generous on the fried clams. The staff there are very friendly. We had to change orders after we paid and they were very nice about it. The only drawback is the seating area. As many tourists feed the pigeons, pigeon do come in and you can constantly see pigeons fly above you while you eat. Wish the restaurant can do something about it. read more

Maybe I'm biased because I grew up eating this stuff back when they had arcade games in the restaurants, but this is my favorite fish and chips in Seattle. Get the cajun style! It's the best. Really sad that the airport location closed, but this location is the best. On a sunny day you can sit outside, watch the ferries, look at the mountains, and feed the seagulls all while eating fish and chips! On gloomy days there is a warmed indoor seating location with large windows where you can still look out and mope. The ordering here is a little chaotic with the tourist hordes, but somehow they find a way to get it done quickly. I never have to wait more than 5 minutes for my food. I am in here once a week. Stopped by since I was meeting up with my friends in a few hours but was starving since I had just landed in Seattle. I had just finished visiting the aquarium down the embarcadero and decided that I needed to try something before heading back towards the car. Ivar's is apparently an institution here and since I didn't need the sit down experience, I opted for the Fish Bar, which is like bar service: you order at the counter, wait for your food, then take it to the seating area next to the shop or into the covered area to eat without having to worry about seagulls pooping on your head. I ordered the calamari/french fries and a small cup of clam chowder. I initially sat outside but the seagulls were congregating so I moved indoors. At least it was nice and warm, thanks to a wall heater blowing hot air throughout. I enjoyed my clam chowder but the calamari was something else to be desired. Some of the rings were so small that it was mostly batter, that I ended up removing. And my french fries were soggy. Service was good though and staff friendly at the counter. This review is for the fish bar, which is on the outside. You order and get your food, then sit at tables on the pier. Prices are a little cheaper than the sit-down restaurant. I don't think we spent more than $10 for some items to sample (not a full meal). White chowder is pretty good, clean tasting with a decent amount of clams. Not as potent as the smoky umami-rich brew served at Pike's Place Chowder, but this one is more like classic white chowder in my mind. The fried clam strips were tiny, but they did a good job with the crispy batter. DH wished they seasoned them more. Fries were pretty awful - steak-cut, but undercooked and greasy. They were very USEFUL, however, for entertainment purposes. Which I mean: feeding the seagulls on the pier. It was INSANE the number of birds hanging around & how they pecked each other to get at the fries. Kids were throwing the fries and birds would pluck them out from mid air. Some startled diners cleared out from their seating areas. Feathers were flying. Surprisingly, there wasn't too much bird poop in the actual eating areas. Also surprising is that the health department is okay with this. Best low cost entertainment...gotta do it once if you're visiting the area. read more

The clam chowder was AMAZING, so we were very excited for our fish and chips. However, they were fried to the point of being rubber and the fries tasted like freezer fries. Coleslaw was WAY to watery. The 2 menu items were complete opposite ends of the spectrum in quality. The 3 stars come from Leslie (our waitress) being so friendly and the clam chowder. Fish and chips were incredibly overpriced for what they were and I'm happy they were kind enough to remove them from our check. This is the signature stop in Seattle pier for some classic style fish n chips. It's a great place where they offer cod/halibut/salmon options for fish n chips. Ivar's is one of my favorite places for clam chowder. (And if you know me, I'm really, really serious about clam chowder.) Ivar's white New England clam chowder is a great example of the quintessential bowl of chowder: thick and creamy consistency, potatoes and celery chopped to the right size, sizable chunks of real clam... It looks and tastes just right. No frills, done well. The other items on their menu (a variety of fish and chips, shrimp cocktail, bread bowls etc) are all pretty good too. Ivar's Fish Bar is right next to the Ivar's Acres of Clams restaurant on the pier. If you want a quick, decently-priced meal, opt out of the restaurant and order from the Fish Bar counter outside. There is ample heated seating in a covered area, and outdoor seating for the brave. There's a great view of the water and lots of seagulls to watch. The kids love feeding the gulls. Service: Other than taking your order and calling your name when your order is ready, this place is pretty much self-service. You grab your own napkins and eating utensils then find a place to sit. Location: This fish bar is located conveniently at the waterfront at pier 54. I've been to Ivar's several times and realize the price keeps raising every time I go back which is definitely a bummer. I tried the halibut which was the most expensive and frankly, it wasn't that great. I think if you're trying this place for the first time, I suggest the cheapest fish option because it's surprisingly the best option they offer. Toddler friggin heaven: -seafood bar = no long waits for food or dealing with wait staff -sitting outside but in a tent = feeling much less guilty about how much food your kid throws on the floor! -seagulls and ferry boats outside = great entertainment -feeding the seagulls outside (highly encouraged!) with leftover fries = TODDLER MIND-BLOWING In short, a great place to go if you're in the area and have young kids (and a limited tolerance for sit-down restaurants). Also: it was closed for construction while we were there, but apparently the space next door is a fire station (complete with fire-fighting boats!), so again, toddler heaven. I am visiting my son from out-of-state & we decided to go have dinner at Ivar's to celebrate his birthday & Mother's Day on my last night in Seattle. We sat outside on the patio, overlooking the water & gorgeous views. And while we dined, we could watch the Ferries coming and going, which added to the ambience. This is nothing more than a tourist trap. We were looking for really good seafood and this absolutely was a disappointment. Ordered fried calamari , the seared scallops and beer battered halibut. The breading on the calamari was extremely heavy and greasy. You couldn't really enjoy the calamari. A $40 scallop dish yielded 6 scallops in total which were over cooked, rubbery and too salty. Came in on an off hour for lunch and there was absolutely no line. Not bad for me since I was able to order immediately. Upon ordering, I got the cup of chowder and true cod 4 pieces with Cajun seasoning. So for service, the only service one can really base it off is when you order. Didn't ask me which clam chowder I wanted (because they have more than one kind) and just gave me one (good thing he gave me the right one though). The "cook" said order up and he didn't get the food until the cook said order is up thrice. Kind of bad service in that regards - especially so when I was the only customer. Lastly, he placed everything on the tray and just stared at me without saying, it's ready or here you go. Just stared at me as I was reaching for it. Anyways, to the food. The only good thing I liked were the fries. The fries were crunchy and golden brown. These were actually nicely done. Which is the sad part because the cod or chowder should have been the better. The cod (Cajun) doesn't taste any different to regular cod. The batter was visibly darkened like it had some spices there, but there was no additional taste to it. The cod was slightly overcooked too, because the fish was a bit on the dry side. The batter is a bit on the thicker side. The chowder had a lack of clam taste and tasted a bit of flour. The consistency and texture were correct, but it wasn't tasty. Pretty sad since this is a place on the waterfront. Lastly, the seating for this place is an enclosed location off the side of the order up area. There were birds (tiny sparrows and pigeons) in there. I kid you not, they kept coming over trying to eat some food. Pretty unsanitary in my opinion. A staff worker came in and just laughed when she saw the birds.
