If you are needing a hard drive/HDD recovered, Tom/IT Data Recovery is the place to go. On Saturday 01/07, my 4TB WD HDD with 8 years worth of videos and photos wonked out. Most importantly, I had almost 1TB of honeymoon photos and videos that hadn't been backed up. I googled "hard drive recovery Austin," which led me to Tom at IT Data Recovery! On Monday 01/16, Tom let us know that he was able to recover perfect copies of the Hawaii & Honeymoon videos and 99.9%+ of the sectors after the repairs and multi-pass cloning. On Wednesday 01/18 (10 days after drop-off), we picked up our recovered data. Tom placed them in a 5TB portable USB drive that was compatible for both Mac and PC. Tom reminded us to make copies of the backup and let us know that ITDR has the data backed up for 30 days in case something went wrong after pick up (e.g., if it was dropped or mishap with the transfer process). If you are uncomfortable with that, you can also let him know via e-mail to wipe the data earlier. Payment was quick and easy, and Tom sent us a receipt via e-mail afterwards. Tom is awesome. I had a Macbook Pro 2012 that had a dead battery and motherboard/logic board failure, but I still had some important documents on it. If you're reading this review, it's likely that something dreadful has happened to your data and now you're panicked, shopping around for a data recovery center. Look no further. I was in the middle of writing my doctoral dissertation when my primary external hard drive suddenly stopped working. Now I own about 8 external hard drives, all of them similarly aged with a 1 TB data capacity, and the primary one had to go ahead and croaked on me at the most convenient time. The other external HDs have various copies of the data, I hadn't backed them up in a couple of months, which was a very precarious and expensive mistake. First, I took the bad HD to Best Buy and CompuZone, of which neither place could help me out. A few days later, CompuZone referred me to IT Data Recovery, presenting me a business card from a Mr. Thomas Hall "recovery advisor / technician." I called Tom that night, and he immediately picked up my call. He was patient, kind, and informative. He laid out every possible scenario, giving me approximate estimates of each scenario. I never felt he was withholding any crucial information from me or assuming that I knew what I should know. The next day, I filled out a form online and dropped off my HD. As it turns out, I was facing the "worst" scenario in which my hard drive required a clean room for data recovery. Tom estimated that the clean room scenario would take from one week to three weeks, and even so, he could not guarantee that they would recover all the data. If they couldn't succeed, they wouldn't charge me. What more did I have to lose? I gave them go-ahead. A week later, Tom contacted me with good news, saying that they were making excellent progress with the data recovery and hoped to make a "very good" or "near-perfect" recovery. A few days later, he updated the news, saying they made a perfect recovery, which he claimed to only happen in 15% of the worst case scenarios (!!!). It's hard to imagine how one could give a 5-star review for a data recovery operation. What a stressful ordeal - losing one's data! It's even worse when it's your small business data which was stored in a RAID array and had a backup copy on a separate drive to boot. This was not my finest hour. However, Tom and his team came to my rescue by saving all of my data and providing it back to me exactly as it was. Furthermore, it was not terribly expensive (not compared to the competition anyway). I have always been a believer in local small businesses, and I admit I was briefly tempted to send off our server to a lab somewhere. However, I am so glad that I did not! Wow. Business must be good. I just talked to Tom, who turned my words around, said I kept changing the story when indeed he was not listening to what I said but was filling in blanks that didn't exist, and within minutes the free evaluation they boast about became a $100 charge. Okay. I was fine with that because he said the evaluation would essentially be an initial recovery attempt. i.e. my issue sounded like an easy fix, but after the initial charge the total would be a minimum of $400. Wait a second: At the beginning of the conversation he had just told me the minimum was $300 and now it is $400? This is when he realized his error and that I knew he was going to overcharge me. I actually was still fine with the $400 since I already knew that was about the going rate. But suddenly, he said he "wanted to back out". His exact words. "I want to back out." I've been in business since 1991, and I have never had a more upsetting or disrespectful conversation with a potential service provider. Right before I called, I had just come out of a successful negotiation at my office so I was feeling great and was really on. But this one phone conversation with him left my mouth dry and me feeling confused and very disturbed. I hope he was just having a bad day and doesn't treat everyone who doesn't appear to be a big wig with such disdain. I pretty much had multiple panic attacks when my external drive quit working. It would power up but none of the computers in the house would recognize it. So, thinking it was something simple like a bad USB cord - I took it up north to Frys. They took it off my hands and said they had to run a diagnostic and get back to me. That evening they said their computers could recognize it but couldn't see data. Okay. Progress. Then five days went by with no update but since it was such a huge drive I didn't panic too, too much. Then I called them for an update and found out they didn't retrieve anything and now the drive was making noises (according to them). Panic kicks in. Two year old IMAC. Hard drive completely fried. Nothing backed up. Contained my son's first two years of memories in video and photo. Needless to say, they were priceless images for my wife and me. I called Tom in a very desperate moment (probably blabbering and not speaking very clearly in my distraught state), and he calmly listened to my drawn out version of how everything had transpired (despite the fact that it was a Saturday and IT Data Services was closed) and then explained in extraneous detail all of my options. Because of numerous complications and frustrations with Apple Customer Service, I had to call Tom back multiple times before I decided to use their services. Each and every time he was considerate and listened to my problem/issue/concern without revealing any signs impatience. Due to the fact that I live up at Fort Hood, Tom offered to pick up the drive from Compuzone where the warranty work was being done on the computer. In a matter of days, IT Data Services completely recovered 100% of the information on my hard drive for a very reasonable price. They saved it to an external and sent it to me 2-day FedEx to let me look through the drive and make sure everything looked satisfactory. Once I confirmed that it was a complete recovery, they dropped the hard drive back off at Compuzone. Let me also mention that although Compuzone is only a couple of blocks from IT Data Services, many stores would have charged me for the convenience of the pick up/drop off. IT Data Services, on the other hand, offered to take care of it before I even had to ask.
