I work in software/databases, so I am pretty familiar with computers. However, I am not very knowledgeable or comfortable tearing my computer open to go through the hardware and try and swap pieces out. That being said, I had a serious framerate issue with my gaming desktop, and was doing troubleshooting on it for two weeks. I consulted Reddit, I wiped everything besides the BIOS, ran plenty of diagnostics, gave it a good dusting, but nothing fixed the issue. I finally decided to take it in and have someone look at the hardware, realizing most likely I had a busted chord or fan somewhere that would need to be replaced. I gave Scott a rundown, and he told me he would call me when he figured it out. He called me ten minutes later, so quickly I did not see the call until they had already closed. I then worked the rest of the week with Alicia who did all the replacements for my cooling system, graphics card and power core. Just got it home and have my computer running better than when I first bought it due to the new upgrades. I cannot recommend them enough, they are very knowledgeable and Alicia is a saint. They were the absolute best!!! I came in with a very unusual problem, I needed a tiny screw to hold my 2nd SSD in place on my motherboard. Personally I swear I brought my parts over, just misplaced them. Long story short, We went home with a handful of screws, picked which one fit, brought the rest back for free. Same feedback as others: Unprofessional Much longer wait time for completion than originally quoted Case of computer was worse off than when brought in (a usb port is partially collapsed) and my battery suddenly wouldn't hold enough charge to even turn on anymore. My laptop has to be plugged into the wall for power and even in that, seems to just be hobbling along. Don't trust them enough to take it back to make it right. read more

Didn't have a great experience here. This was over two years ago, so maybe things have changed and I admit my memory is not detailed. I brought in my desktop PC that was having overheating problems. The staff was nice enough, but they kept treating me like I was a pain in the neck, maybe it was because they didn't usually deal with machines like mine. It was off-putting. They ended up leaving my computer on overnight in their shop with no AC during a hot time of the year to "test" it. I don't know much about hardware, but putting a computer that is having overheating issues through 80+ temperatures for several hours seems like a bad idea! Maybe a good place for laptops and similar, not gaming grade machines. And as I said before, things may have changed there since my experience was from a while ago. read more

I'm willing to bet most of these 5 star reviews are from friends or family doing them a favor. These guys are so rude and unprofessional. They take days to even give you a diagnostic on the issue. They never call you to give you an update and when you call to check in, they give you so much attitude! Then when you ask them what the prices will be on the different solutions, they tell you to "stop being cheap". They throw out some random number and try to convince you they are doing you a favor. Do not be fooled! I called 2 others immediately after and they both quoted much cheaper for the exact same work. Now watch the owner reply back and complain about how terrible his experience with the customer was, how all of this is a lie, and how great he is and how he can do no wrong. My computer crashed and two other competitors told me it was a battery issue. After the I spent money on a battery and their consultation services and still had a problem, I took it to Scott. He spent a day diagnosing a power failure in the motherboard and arranged burial services. You may say, "What's the difference? it still means your computer was broken and now you paid a third guy to tell you what you already knew." Right, but at least I knew the truth and that it was a terminal case. He also rolled his consult fees into a great replacement that's better then the one I took to him, and at what I consider to be a really reasonable cost. So, yes. My gaming laptop had a fan that went bad, I could hear it scraping. I figure I'm a smart guy, so I got the part number for the fan from the company (origin). Laptop takes 2 fans, same part #. I bought 4 new fans from China so I could replace them both while I was at it, and have 2 spare for next time. I'm a smart guy, so I figured I would install them myself. Easy job, right? Well I failed to take into account the stupid tiny ribbon cables that are so short when you detach the keyboard assembly they just rip out of the board. They weren't broken (so I thought), so I tried to get them clipped back in myself. I made an even bigger mess of things, and figured I'd probably bricked my expensive gaming rig! Took it to Computer medic, Scott assured me that I'm not an idiot, even though I'm pretty convinced that I am, and was optimistic about fixing it. Well, it turned out I damaged a couple of those ribbon cables. Scott still managed to fix EVERYTHING, including repairing the tiny fragile stupid ribbon cables that are completely non-standard parts and practically irreplaceable, got both of the fans installed to boot, and even installed a terrabyte SSD I brought him and put windows on it for me. He charged me a whopping hour and a half for labor for this job. :) (that was sarcasm if you couldn't tell, an hour and a half is just unreal). Next time I'm not even going to try to do my own work, I'm just going to take it over to Scott and pay him, he's not only a great technician but just an all-around nice guy, and super knowledgeable about computer hardware! So the laptop dies for the 2nd time in a year. My data is backed up BUT...since things won't even get to a bootup screen (even in DOS) it becomes somewhat useless. On a Sunday. With project deadlines looming. So Computer Medic got my business because they happened to be open on Sunday and would take a rush job. Scary, huh? Could mean they're desperate. Or expensive. Or both. Turns out it was neither. Scott Snell was both competent and damn busy. It took about 48 hours for me to get the problem resolved (failed hard drive, but the data was recoverable), so I didn't have to fall back on my unproven backup system. The price was fair, and even though I had to reinstall my programs (another day flushed down the toilet) I didn't lose anything important. Dogs are also allowed at the office here, which is a big plus for me. Had a great time with Deacon while I was waiting for final installation when I came to pick it up. Don't let the 4-star rating fool you into thinking someone else's 5-star rating means that company is better. When your problem is fixed correctly, everyone thinks it's GREAT. When it's not fixed correctly (regardless of reason), everyone thinks "this place sucks." I think this one has 5-star potential, and I'd like to see some others bring their problems here to confirm or deny. Hopefully, ones that aren't quite as severe as mine. read more

I found computer medic on yelp and decided to give them a shot! It's a small business with a very hospitable owner and a n adorable senior dog manning the establishment. They were able to fix my laptop at a very reasonable cost and efficient amount of time! I am completely computer-illiterate. I can turn one on (sometimes), write emails, and use the internet, but that's about it. I bought a brand-new laptop at Office Depot two months ago and this morning (Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend) the "P" key just ... fell off. Of course, I called for help. Office Depot: "No, sorry, we don't do repairs here. You'll have to call the customer service number." Office Depot Customer Service: "Oh, you don't have your receipt? You'll have to wait until Tuesday to call the receipt recovery center. Or I guess you could call Acer, since it's still under the manufacturer's warranty." Acer: "Did you drop it?" Me: "No." Acer: "Are you sure you didn't drop it?" Me: "I'm sure I didn't drop it." Acer: "Maybe someone else was using it and dropped it." Me: "No." Acer: "Okay, then I guess it's covered under the warranty. You'll have to bubble wrap it (6 inches thick) and send it off to the repair center. You can expect to have it back ten days from when we receive it. You'll have to cover the shipping costs." Multiple Other Austin Repair Companies: "We're closed until Tuesday." I've given the play-by-play just so you can understand how extraordinarily frustrated I was by the time I called Scott at Computer Medic. He was VERY nice, listened to me, tried to help me over the phone, then offered to let me come in (on a Sunday, no less!) for him to look at. When it became apparent that I AM going to have to get Acer to fix the entire keyboard, not only did he not charge me for his time, Scott offered to fix me up with a loaner laptop until mine returns. I cannot even begin to describe how relieved I am. Today was SO close to being a complete disaster, and Scott saved the day! While watching streaming video one Friday evening, my computer pops and goes black, won't restart. I had it in Scott Snell's hands early Saturday and it was done by Monday afternoon. 4 little cubes on the motherboard were copper on top, I blew 4 circuits at once. Replace the system? Not necessary. Scott had a new motherboard that fit my system with a faster chipset (yeah!), 2Gb Ram, new video card and reinstall Windows and drivers over existing load. Fast service, no waiting, answers his own phone and the price is great. My system now runs as fast as I can type/think! Scott gave it another 2 years of life. I HP laptop crashed in the middle of some important projects for work. I found Computer Medic online after a bit of research. Other places quoted me ridiculous hourly rates and slow turn around time. I spoke to Scott and he offered to look at it same day for no charge. It required a few days of work (combination of malware, Ebola, and swine flu - nasty business). However, Scott fixed the problems, and got my computer running as fast as when I first purchased it. The best part... he only charged me a few HOURS of work and his rate was more than fair. My friend also bought a used desktop from a DIFFERENT vendor in San Antonio a few months ago and it's already crashing periodically. He has fair pricing and he's honest. I have been doing business with Scott for 3 or 4 years now. I think I have bought 7 laptops and 1 desktop so far for business and personal purposes. Computer Medic is a great local company with a great owner. My MacBook was facing the ever popular issue where upon start up appeared a flashing folder with a question mark. This is a sign of a corrupted hard drive. Scott, the owner, told me this was most likely the issue and that my files may be gone for good, but he would be happy to run diagnostics and see what he could do. He even promised up front that he would cap the work at a certain price (a price which was waaay better than other repair shops I had spoken with before). My hopes of ever getting my files back were very low, but to my astonishment, Scott was able to recover EVERY file and even cut the price off below the cap he had originally stated. This was a great experience and I will definitely be bringing any device issues in the future to Computer Medic. Also, don't get too bummed out if you don't hear from Scott after a few days. I needed my old Dell laptop fixed a couple months ago, the screen had cracked, and none of the several other places I'd gone to even had an LCD for my model. (One did offer to order it, for an arm and a leg). So by chance, I stumbled upon Computer Medic through an ad on Craigslist. I took my laptop there, and within a few days it was ready! (I was lucky enough he had the right screen on hand) Compared to other places, it was cheap. And It was great learning that I don't have to dodge traffic, drive to North Austin, or even Round Rock to find quality PC repair service -- there's one a 10 minute drive away! :-) So now Computer Medic is the only place I go when I need computer repair, or even an upgrade. What really sets Computer Medic apart from all the rest, is the Owner, Scott's willingness to tell you exactly what's wrong with the computer. Sure, maybe not at first, but certainly when the work is done. And even give advice how to prevent the same thing happening, or how to use a component. It's doesn't just feel like a Service, it's a learning experience too. Scott has the patience and knowledge to explain the issues, without dumbing it down, and without using cryptic tech terms either. He's easygoing, (Like Randall says, who else would allow dogs? it's great!) and he's so... Austin. Just not quite as weird. read more

Day one: I first brought my laptop in for a cracked screen. They were able to replace the screen immediately which was great. I brought the laptop home and didn't use it that night. Day two: In the morning, I opened it up and it had a TAB fault error screen. My husband called and informed them right away. I brought the laptop back that afternoon and when I dropped it off, I was basically accused of having damaged the brand new screen, and that it couldn't have been anything else besides my negligence. They replaced the screen again for me for free which I thought was fair. Day three: I open my laptop and I can hear something within the screen/lid clicking around, like a loose screw or something stuck inside. Every time I open or close the laptop or move it around, I hear a small metallic rattle. The screen is also covered in grey diagonal lines which I didn't notice right away. When using a white background (like MS word document) it is very obvious and annoying. Almost $200 wasted in repairing it.... I would've been better off bringing this to Fry's or buying a new computer. By the way this laptop is only a year old and never had any issues before the cracked screen and ensuing repairs. 7/7: Response to Scott I appreciated the quick work, which is why I opted to tip $20 to my bill of $164.95, making the total $184.95 (which is why I quoted "almost $200"). I do recall that my husband and I were extremely grateful, thanking you and your associates endlessly (and providing a tip). You did not accuse me of any negligence: that was provided by your employee when I returned the next day with the tab error fault. She made multiple comments that I must have re-damaged the laptop in the 12 hours since I left your shop, which I rebutted and discussed with her on the spot. If I was or am doing anything to damage my electronics, I want to be fully aware so that I can fix my bad habits. In this case, I do not believe that I contributed to the recurring damage and I did everything I could to bring it in right away. I understand that parts can be faulty and electronics can be temperamental, and did not begin to get upset until this point. The grey diagonal lines (which are still present) are not obvious against the desktop background until you open something light colored (MS Word or a Google page, for example). They transverse the entire screen and are extremely apparent with the light background. My lesson learned from this is to check items a lot more carefully before I bring them home. You, personally, were professional and worked quickly. I just wasn't satisfied with the repair or the way I was treated when I returned-sorry. I've since replaced the original laptop with a newer laptop to avoid further damage to something that I depend so heavily on for my daily work. The original laptop is still usable, but probably better off as a stationary machine at home for lighter use (my subjective opinion). read more

Best Buy had my computer for days. I took it to Computer Medic and they had it done in one day! Their prices are very reasonable and the people there are so friendly and helpful! To add to the great service, I got the computer back and was setting it up when I realized that we didn't have a keyboard. Brought my laptop in for something that was easy to fix just had to wait for a part to be delivered but when I called which was two or three times over a 2 week process to follow up the gentleman on the other end was always annoyed. So after my first great experience, I went back and had a "meh" experience. My computer had some kind of malware trouble, and I was in the middle of a semester of course. I showed up about 10 minutes before 10. The door was open, so I didn't think to look at the hours. I got in trouble for showing up early. :/ I figured, whatever, I just need to drop this off. This time I had a netbook and stuff backed up, so I wasn't in a hurry to get my desktop back. I was dumb enough not to ask for an estimate (he fixed it right in front of me the last time I took it in). A week goes by, and I hear nothing. I finally call and he has to look around for a second and try and figure out what I left. I got the impression he hadn't worked on it, because I got a response like, "How about I fix it by tomorrow afternoon, and I'll call you if it takes longer." I went ahead and called to check before I went over the next day, and got a "I TOLD you it'd be ready." Hmm. Maybe I just caught this guy on a bad day/week. Another home run by Scott. I have a theoretically strong PC that's been anemic for quite some time. I've never had time to back up all my data properly and bring it to Scott but finally, I'd had enough. I told him what was going on and he got right into it the next day. He found significant fan and cooling issues that were causing lots of CPU stress. Fixed. Scott ran a few benchmark tests and said before vs after was 3.5 times better. When my DVD drive stopped working, I took my computer to Computer Medic. Scott helped me; a very nice guy, and he seems to be the manager or owner. He knew right off that bat the it was a hardware issue, but was polite enough to humor me about it possibly being a software issue. Work and labor were more than fare, $60 total. Here's why Computer Medic gets only 4 stars: besides my DVD drive issue, my laptop's keys were sticking very badly from a rouge bottle of salad dressing some 3 months ago. They offered to fix it for $20 by taking my keyboard out and soaking it in alcohol. Turns out this completely screwed my keyboard up. In their defense, they did immediately order a new one, and put it in for free. Also, the place is kinda a mess. Looks more like a techie-hoarder's garage than a place of business. I can't cay enough about this place. They saved me a great deal of pain. I am a somewhat advanced computer user, as in I build my own desktops. I don't have the diagnostic equipment to test when things go wrong. I had 2 drives fail with in 48 hours of each other, so I assumed my Motherboard was bad, but want to get it tested to be sure. Sure enough when he tested it, the board was fine, but both drive have failed. I must have some bad luck, I have never heard of drive failing at the same time till now. I highly recommend this place. I can't thank Scott and his crew enough! I needed to wipe data from 4 donated laptops for shipment to an impoverished area in Tanzania. We negotiated a lower price since it was for charity, but Scott surprised me by doing the work for free - he was happy to help a good cause. Not only that, but when one laptop failed to operate, he threw in not 1 but 2 more systems for us to send to Africa. I can't begin to tell you how much this was appreciated. How many shops do you know of that are so generous and community minded? More than that, though, is that the shop is run by lovely people (and their adorable canine companions). This is a solid shop.
