When the original door was removed, it was clear to see that the opening had been modified. The original door was not the correct size for the opening. We had already bought a door from the original door measurements. Knowing that we would not be able to do it ourselves, I contacted Kama'aina Handyman. They did an excellent job and built a new frame for the doorway. They also replaced some cinder blocks that had broken with wood framing to make sure the door was straight and plumb. It was quite a big change for her after living independently, so we took our time researching options and companies. My mom wanted a design-build company that would take care of the entire project from start to finish. We met with three other design-build companies and felt most comfortable with Atlas. Their estimate was also fair and reasonable. Josh, our project coordinator, was down to earth, patient, a good listener, and easy to work with. He made my mom feel at ease and clearly cared about what was important to her. Josh was a constant presence from the beginning and throughout the design phase. We met with Jeremy and Josh weekly to design the layout and specifications of the ADU. We had difficulty making some decisions and changed our minds on a few things. They were incredibly patient and kind toward us, doing their best to accommodate exactly what my mom wanted. We continued meeting weekly with them until we were completely happy with the design plans. After that, they took care of submitting the plans for permitting. Once permitting was approved--less than a year later--we met at our home with Josh, Bruce (the owner), and Shay and Saul. Bruce came to meet us personally to share the company's heart, commitment, and dedication to its customers. Shay was our project manager, and we worked with her for the entire duration of the build. Shay was extremely responsive, patient, accommodating, and always available. We can be very detail-oriented and nit-picky, but she took it all in stride. She truly went above and beyond every step of the way to make sure we were happy with everything and completely satisfied with the end product. Even when unexpected things came up or things didn't go exactly as planned, Shay always made it right. The build took about nine months, which was quicker than the permitting. All the workers and subcontractors were great to work with. They were respectful, on time, and hardworking. Unfortunately, I can't remember everyone's names, but I specifically want to give a shout-out to Gabe, Randy, Shane, and Aaron; and to the subcontractors, Joel (electrician) and Marlon (AC). Bethany, our selections coordinator, was also wonderful--knowledgeable, helpful, and willing to meet with us multiple times. She even came with us to different vendors to help us select every single item in the ADU. Her eye for design was extremely helpful. She also put together a packet of all the products we selected with their warranties and rebates! We can't thank Atlas enough for their professionalism and trustworthiness. Every member of the team worked with the same ethic and care. My mom is extremely happy and settled in her new home. It has everything she asked for, with quality materials and craftsmanship. Atlas was amazingly able to design an ADU with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a laundry room, living room, and kitchen--all within 800 square feet! Even after our project was done, we have contacted Shay a few times, and she is still incredibly helpful and responsive. He was very knowledgable and seemed to be a straight shooter (I wanted some storage over the toilet and he straight up told me that would be weird because it would block the bathroom window). After listening to what we were thinking, he came up with a plan and gave us an estimate. We didn't get any renderings (not sure if bathroom renovations get those?) but we knew he knew what he was doing, so it wasn't really an issue - Mom and I were trusting he and his team's professionalism and it worked! Did we have any idea of the cost of a bathroom renovation? No. Was it more than I imagined it to be? Honestly, yes. But after the job was done, did I think it was worth it? ABSOLUTELY YES. From the first site visit to the final walkthrough, everything was seamless. William managed this project very well and guided us through this process with ease. At any point if we had questions he was quick to respond. The showroom they have is great and the experience of setting your preferences on design and materials is quite enjoyable. The only hiccup we encountered is that the supplier of the original tile that had been selected did not come in the size we needed and so it wouldn't have meshed well with the current tile in the living room. William helped us find a suitable alternative and we were able to pivot and are very pleased with the outcome. There were a couple of adjustments during the project but again related to the tile, we changed the direction of the placement which allows for us to replace the remaining tile in the house in the future if we decided to do so. William and team thinking ahead with our needs in mind really provided a sense of care. To top it all off, we wanted this build done ASAP and the team was able to complete the remodel in 8 days compared to their estimate of 10 - 14. My renovation consisted of a full kitchen & bathroom remodel, with tub to shower conversion. I contacted a few companies and received various quotes, some of which required me to travel to various showrooms to select materials which as a first time home renovator, seemed overwhelming. However, when I was contacted by William, he informed me he had previously done renovations in my building and was very familiar with how the management office worked, water shut off, elevator reservations, etc. MY Construction's showroom had all materials/samples in one place where I could put everything together and get a visual idea; he also had tons of photos of examples on his phone to show me. Can't say enough amazing things about William and his crew, not only did he keep me updated daily, but he also handled so many of the nuance tasks on his own, making sure I wasn't distracted at work or taking on any unnecessary stress during the project. (He even dealt with a cranky tenant who had been accidentally double booked by management for the elevator as well as installing all of the new appliances!) The communication couldn't have been better. On to the finished reno; it's truly everything I wanted and more!
