Maika'i installed damaged/ defective floor tiles in both my bathrooms and tried to say the scratches were part of the "design" of the tiles. One bathroom had 18 scratches and the other had 14. The scratches are between 3-5 inches in length and are very noticeable on the polished surface. First they tried to say it wasn't noticeable then they said it was part of the design. They will not replace it or refund me enough so I can hire another contractor to replace it. The work supervisor jun sent me pictures of another customers shower walls that had the same scratched tiles with red arrows pointing out the scratches and said it was "not noticeable unless you looked at it at an angle." This means they are installing defective/ damaged material in other customers homes too. I saved many years to afford this remodel and I am devastated by their poor work and materials. They also did a bad job of grout on the shower floors and bathroom floors and when I asked why pipes they installed for my tub to walk in shower conversion were off center they said they always do it that way. If they had told me they planned to install the pipes off center before they did it I would have hired a different company. Communication is very poor with this company. None of the workers on site speak English and their "supervisor" is rarely there so the workers are left on their own and they have poor judgement and little common sense. The owner Q never answers e mails or text messages when you have concerns and the supervisor Jun tries to charge you extra to fix problems they caused that should have just been done right the first time. They were supposed to install shower doors I bought from Home Depot but on their first attempt the doors were askew and not aligning parallel to the shower walls and they only glued the door jams on instead of following the instruction manual and using the provided wall anchors and screws that came with the kit. Then they threw away the box. I sent them a video from Home Depot showing them how to do it. The supervisor Jun assured me that he and the workers had watched the video and would do it correctly with screws the next day. The next day I called Jun and he said he was there when they put the screws in. I told him that the door jams peeled off the walls because once again they only used glue and no screws. I had to hire a different contractor to put in the doors even though in our signed contract Maika'i was supposed to provide the labor to install the doors and I paid them to do it. The owner Q said that it wasn't necessary to follow the instruction manual for installing the doors because his office worker who used to work at Home Depot said it wasn't necessary. I would guess that this worker has never installed a Delta Contemporary sliding shower door in their life. They put so much grout on the shower floor it obscured the floor tiles and you couldn't pry out the shower drain if you had a clog that needed to be snaked. Then they chipped the tile when the chiseled off the excess grout off the drain cap. Other red flags to watch out for: they want most of the money upfront or halfway through with only 5% due at completion of work. This gives them little incentive to finish in a timely manner or do a good job the way a 50% at completion would. They wanted me to buy flooring from their store for them to install but it only had a 10 year warranty. I told them my brother's flooring from Bougainville had a lifetime warranty for residential use and Jun said they could make theirs a lifetime warranty because they worked closely with the manufacturer in China. I needed popcorn ceiling that had asbestos in it removed. Although the contract I signed with them said if the ceiling had asbestos it would have to be professionally abated, Jun told me they could remove it even though it had asbestos and "we do it all the time." I told him his workers didn't have protection from breathing it in and I didn't want them getting mesothelioma. I also didn't want me or my family to get mesothelioma from their contaminating the whole house and the abatement company said it is illegal to be dumping that stuff in regular trash. I could go on but this is getting pretty long. My advice to you would be to know they are not accredited with the Better Business Bureau but you can still file a complaint against them with the BBB and the BBB will work to mediate for you, you can file a complaint with the Hawaii state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, but most importantly do not hire this company! Save yourself the stress and sleepless nights. They are cheaper than most other companies but there is a reason for that. Sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you get even less than you paid for... read more

I would give them a negative rating if I could. -Their services are terrible. They just want to grab your money and run -They skipped essential steps while installing my flooring, causing long-term damage. -The tiles they installed for me now leak dirty water from below, indicating that they probably didn't even put concrete underneath. -They also use every chance to add more fees to their services. -The floor liner bubbled up after only a couple of months. -The stair installation was also terrible, as the wood started to fall apart and pinch my foot as I stepped on it. -They installed an island without an outlet, even though I requested one. While building, they didn't even use the slab design I chose because it was out of stock; since I am easygoing, I wasn't going to start an ordeal over it. I'm unsure if that was the case or if they have to use the cheaper product for us because we have no construction knowledge. Furthermore, when we cleared my brother's room to turn it into a baby room, we noticed painting spots all over. -They did not move anything and only painted to please the visible eye. We are now seeking out them to make this right. If you don't have experience in the same field or knowledge of fixing houses, I wouldn't recommend using their services. They are not honest and genuine in providing their services. Unfortunately, we didn't have basic knowledge of construction and were scammed by them. read more

We were so ready to update our place after being stuck at home during the pandemic, so we spent a decent amount of time doing research since our last renovation project didn't exactly go as planned. Thankfully a friend referred Maika'i construction and we are so glad we called them up. They are a team of professionals, very responsive, up front about the project and cost and how much extra fee if I decide to add any particular parts, I felt at ease working with them, which is really rare for working with a construction company. They also have a showroom of their own stock of materials such as kitchen cabinets, hardware, flooring. I had a blast shopping and picking out materials which is included in the price quote. And the best part, they finished the entire project on time! Now that's really the first time that happened to us , out of multiple construction companies we've worked before, I can stay we are most happy with Maikai for their professionalism and a job well done. We have a brand new kitchen and flooring! read more

The best contractor experience we have had in the 16 years we have lived in Honolulu. I found them on Yelp (thank you Yelp!!!) after having disastrous results with another contractor who quit the day before he was supposed to start work (I will cover that in a separate review). But on to the important stuff: Maika'i showed up to look at the job 2 days after first contact and I had an extremely reasonable proposal in my hands 3 days later which I immediately signed. They started work 2 days later! Work was for remodeling of a 100 yr old solid stone house where nothing is easy (try running electrical or plumbing!!). Work included bathroom(s) renovation, kitchen renovation, lanai waterproofing and tile replacement, replacement of rotting exterior stairs, complete interior painting (w/20' vaulted ceilings requiring scaffolding), and exterior painting of lanai parapet and exterior gates and the carport/garage door. All work was done in house with NO subcontractors which is amazing these days. Maika'i has large staff of workers including all disciplines (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpenters, painters, etc) that are expertly managed as they rotate work amongst multiple customers. David and Mr. Q (the PM and Owner) are a pleasure to work with. All work completed exceeded our expectations and they will be our first choice for any future remodeling work. read more

This was my very first renovation. Admit, it can be trying and stressful. Maikai's David and Scott were very helpful and if there are questions, they get Q's opinion and approval. They were recommended by a close friend, whose daughter has also renovated her 50+ yr old home... beautiful! I picked out the quartz counters, quartz shower walls, cabinets and hardware. They installed all the items I purchased. There were a few situations, however, it usually comes with the nature of renovating. All good. At the end, my old dated condo was transformed into a beautiful new one! I just "love" my clean, bright, up-to-date unit! So happy with my choice of colors as well. Thank you Maikai. read more

The Maika'i Construction team is superb! I recently renovated a 50+ year old home with new plumbing and electrical. I received a few estimates from a number of local contractors and ultimately selected Maika'i for their fair pricing along with my gut feeling on trust. David and Q are easy to work with and take the time to understand your construction needs. David is awesome with answering phone calls and texts which helps to alleviate stress... building/remodeling is no joke so it is important to have a contractor who will answer when you need them. One of my favorite parts of the renovation process has been picking out my finishes and accessories. Because I am new to construction, the Maika'i team has provided me with thoughtful suggestions on how they can make my interior selections functional and aesthetically appealing. They take direction well and work hard. Every time I have stopped by unannounced, the entire team has been focused on the job. We had a small hiccup with the pattern of my laundry floor tiles, but Maika'i was quick to apologize and make it right. Although my home is not 100% completed yet, I wanted to share a few photos of the renovation process (I will add more photos later). I can't wait to move in and enjoy everything! read more

Maika'i Construction - a kitchen with wood floors - General Contractors Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

I was in the market of a contractor to do an extension to my home in Mililani Mauka.  The renovation was approximately 800 square feet.  The build included a new bedroom, renovation of a half bath into a full bath, a den area, extending the existing family room, and a covered patio. After getting estimates from friends in the construction industry, who did side jobs on weekends and contractors that were referred by friends, I decided to check out Yelp because I was not satisfied with the completed time and overall estimate.  Because of the great reviews, I contacted Danny Cho of Maika'i Construction.  From the start, I had a good feeling about this local braddah.   He was professional, easy to talk to and very accommodating.  Danny's estimate was reasonable and fair compared to other estimates I received.    Overall, I was very pleased with Danny and his crew at Maika'i Construction.  I am a very detailed individual and Danny provided me with assurances.  Danny has a "no worry, I'll take care of it" attitude.  And believe me, he's good on his word.  He also completed the project before the estimated date of completion and more importantly on budget!!!  His crew are very hard workers and respectful.  They work six days a week and completed the job in 35 working days.  Even my neighbors commented on how fast construction was completed.   I'm glad I found Maika'i Construction on Yelp.  Danny and his crew will be remodeling my kitchen in the near future.   Mahalo Danny and Maika'i Construction. read more

Disappointed in this company. Initially contacted them due to their excellent yelp reviews but they didn't live up to the hype. I spoke with Danny back in June just after purchasing my home. Danny was very responsive and made the time to stop by to provide me an estimate to renovate my kitchen/dining room. After seeing the scope of work he said he wouldn't be able to provide an accurate estimate until I had blue prints drawn. Fast forward 8 weeks I get the blueprints made and contact Danny once more eager to start my project. He stops by looks at my place once more, reads the blue prints and tells me he will get back to me asap with a bid. 1 week goes by no call, I text him he says he needs more time, 2 weeks go by I contact him again and he says he needs more time, 3 weeks go by and I call Danny once more he proceeds to tell me he doesn't have time to take on my renovation. Really?? I waited 3 weeks for you and you don't have the time? Why did you even bother to show up to look at my place? A total waste of my time. Maybe my $100k kitchen Reno was too much for him to handle? Or maybe this company only likes to take on easy condo jobs? I guess I'll never know...... read more

Highly recommended by my friend as they were on the low end of his remodel budget. He told me there was some inattention to detail but overall satisfied. I scheduled them to give me an estimate. They sent over someone to only measure the remodel areas and she told me that she would be unable to give me an estimate on the flooring. I was told her boss would contact me but he never did and I had to contact them for the exact estimates. I chose another company that is giving me the service I expect when spending thousands of dollars. I'm giving them three stars and being generous as they never even gave themselves a chance with me. read more

Danny Cho and his folks did an amazing job on my kitchen. Demo'd one day and complete rebuild in just about 2 days. Timely, amazing work, great price and really professionally done. My building has some strange set ups that require kitchen cabinets to be modified to allow access to an old fuse box and the hot water heater. No problem for them. Done easy and well. The crew even threw in a back splash behind the stove that went straight up to the cabinet. It wasn't previously discussed. The foreman just thought it would look good and asked if I'd like that. Of course. Why not? So he threw that in at no additional cost. Very very pleased with the work and highly recommend them. read more

Danny Cho and his company just remodeled my entire condo unit in Waikiki. There are countless horror stories when it comes to remodels but the entire process was an absolute joy. Not only was he perfectly on budget, but he finished in WAY less time than he estimated. I was not in town for most of the remodel but he constantly sent pictures and updates to me. I never felt like I was missing anything by not being there. In the beginning I interviewed 3 construction companies and while doing so I asked to go see current job sites for each of them. This made it very clear that Danny and his crew were the ones to pick. They were obviously the most organized and professional. Such a great choice. Danny also did the layout for the entire kitchen (which was a challenge). He sent me dozens of 3D drawings with many revisions. I don't know how he did it but he managed to fit all the things I needed into my tiny tiny kitchen. My building manager also commented to me how wonderful they were compared to other construction companies who have worked in my building. They were clean and courteous while others tracked dirt through the lobby and left trash in the halls. And to top it all off Danny is a REALLY nice guy!! read more

These guys are great! they did our bathroom renovation and were so easy to work with! We are using them again on a whole home remodel!

We were looking for a dependable contractor who did quality work Mr. Q. came to our house and we discussed a possible ADU addition Mr. Q suggested that maybe the ADU was not the way to go and suggested adding to our existing home. He said that the price would be very affordable and we discussed the estimate. Mr.Q took care of the plans and permit, demolition, framing, drywall, electrical, plumbing, painting, roofing, gutters, AC split units, cement, solar and even welded and awesome metal gate. We were living in the existing home while construction was going on. We got to know all of his workers and they became like our family. They always showed us what they did before moving onto the next section. Mr. Q is also hands-on and always answered his phone when we had a question and always kept us up-to-date as far as any issues that came up. We are very happy with their quality work and dependability. Our project was completed way before the end date and we were pleased with the results. We would definitely recommend Maika'i construction to anyone looking for any type of work. They are the best! read more

To remodel my condo in salt lake, I got 3 estimates-proposals from different contractors. I went with MAIKA'I CONSTRUCTION for many reasons. Danny (project manager) was very professional and polite; he went to look at my condo just 2 days after we spoke on the phone. His proposal offered a VERY FAIR price and included a 3D image of what my kitchen would look like after renovation. None of the other contractors did that. He was also really good at communicating with me via text, email and phone during the project, always getting back to me within few minutes of reaching out to him. He gave me very professional advice on different things I had questions about and updated me on the project almost daily. His team not only did an amazing job of renovation, but they were skilled, clean and finished the job ON TIME as promised in the proposal. DANNY went above and beyond my expectations, even coordinating days and times for other contractors doing other jobs at the condo like appliance deliveries. If you are looking to remodel your home, any job small or big, DANNY and his crew are the best choice! read more

Maika'i Construction was able to start the job right away. That was important for us. (One company tried to scare me by saying that something must be wrong and I should run if they say they could start working on the unit right away.) Danny Cho's customer service is outstanding! During the whole project, Danny returned phone calls/texts promptly, he sent pictures of the unit as dif parts were being completed, he would check with me first before doing something that wasn't planned and he helped me pick out the best faucets for the unit. And their prices are very reasonable. From what I have seen, Danny has a lot of integrity. He will follow through on what he says. That's pretty awesome! Danny Cho and his crew at Maika'i Construction provided us with a great renovation experience from start to finish. Our condo in Kakaako needed a full kitchen renovation, as well as refinishing of all ceilings, walls and floors. Maika"i Construction completed our extensive project at a reasonable and very fair price. We were living on Maui at the time so the arrangement was long-distance. Danny was always agreeable and responsive which made the entire process that much more positive. He and his crew followed the strict guidelines of our condo - we were impressed by the high caliber of his crew whenever we flew in to Honolulu to view their progress. As former business owners, we have dealt with various construction companies in differing scenarios - we know good work when we "see it". Our kitchen turned out beautifully and thanks to their recommendations & advice, we were happy with the entire outcome. We highly recommend Danny & Maika'i Construction. read more
