Met an old work friend for lunch. We grabbed a booth way in back so her large dog could join us. They weren't busy at all. According to their website, and yelp, there should be a salad bar. Nope. I had a chef salad that was all white iceberg lettuce, a few onion rings, and some cuke slices. And a pile of yellow cheese I didn't want. Never-the-less, it was all fresh and crisp. They used to be so much better. But after shut downs a few years ago they couldn't find anyone to work here, except for the convenience store and Starbucks. And the Subway is long gone. It seems they have at least figured out how to keep the kitchen open with regular hours, but the food is only okay now. They state they are Iron Skillet, but the TA-Petro website indicates no Iron Skillet at this location? There's a diner-like thing going on here, but no one is sure what the hours are? I have been to this location several times and the waitress There is just so outstanding she goes above and beyond the amount of work she does all by herself is incredible and she's so impressive and nice at the same. Passing by on I-90 close to the airport we needed a sit down restaurant for dinner. Unfortunately I picked the Iron Skillet. Their menu was limited to mainly burgers and sandwiches and the very friendly staff recommended the buffet. We picked the buffet and found the majority of selections to be cold and not seasoned with anything recognizable. Maybe it was timing or just a bad night but I would recommend passing on by. You drive around, sometimes you get hungry. It was nearing the end of a day of driving and I could not stand the thought of fast food. I headed in to the Iron Skillet and was promptly greeted after grabbing a seat at the counter. The menu is standard American fare leaning toward belt extensions. I chose not to go with the grilled cheese with a quarter pound of cheddar since I don't feel the need to meet any cardiologists this week. I did go with the "sensible selections" pot roast which was a half portion of the pot roast along with a trip to the soup and salad bar. As with most salad bars it can be very healthy or very deadly depending on what you select. The ingredients were nice and fresh but the dressing options were fairly limited to creamy dressings, no oil and vinegar options in sight. There were also some fried shrimp, chicken and ribs. The shrimp were ok but the drumstick was almost too dry to eat comfortably. The half portion of roast came with gravy, fried onions and potato. I went with baked and the potato was very large. The portion of meat was way more than I could eat so I was glad I went with the smaller serving. At $8.99 it was a good value for the money. The roast was tender and tasty and was a very nice change from the fast food choices on the road. Iron Skillet would not necessarily be my first choice but I would stop in again. I am a huge fan of all you can eat salad bars, especially ones that serve chopped hard boiled eggs. With the demise of the Sizzler chain, my cravings for a good salad bar have been mostly unfulfilled, until I discovered this place. Dining here has been a welcome break from my studies at Eastern Washington University, and now that I am set to graduate in 2 weeks, it saddens me to realize that I will not be able to scratch my salad itch without driving for a while. The only thing that would make it perfect is if they brought back diced ham as one of the offerings they put out. They used to put it out, years ago, but replaced it with something else about 2 years ago. Nice choice of foods :biscuits and gravy hash browns two kinds off scrabbled eggs ,ham, sausage, bacon and corned beef hash, also some sort of sausage with green pepper , fruit , breakfast cereals, french toast oh yes and grits!
