Breakfast stop on Sunday after church. Pretty busy as expected at 11:00 on a Sunday. We were seated right away up in the small loft area. Thought since we were seated out of the way we would have slow service, but that was not the case. Our server was quick, knowledgeable and very attending. She was running up and down those stairs nonstop. I think her name was Ada. She was wonderful. The special of the day was chicken fried chicken Benedict. It was so good. I had a side of fries instead of hash browns and it turned it into a perfect brunch meal. Check out my photo. This is another restaurant that I cannot believe. I haven't gone to in my 40 years in Spokane. It has been here the whole time quietly sitting on grand south of 29th. Very cute building and very welcoming atmosphere. Not too busy early on a Saturday, but it quickly filled up. The four of us in our party were seated right away and immediately greeted with menus and coffee. Very friendly staff and our coffee was never cold! Menu was typical for a breakfast and lunch place and not overly complicated. Our order was taken and delivered quite quickly and the food was piping hot. Eggs were cooked perfectly as were the hashbrowns. Omelette was stuffed full and delicious. Pancakes were fresh and fluffy. One of the things that I particularly noticed was the cleanliness of this place. Sometimes, when a business has been around for a while, it just can get neglected. Cobwebs in corners, dust on light fixtures, etc., but not here! It is apparent that they take great pride in keeping a clean dining room. Classic Excellence! Three of us stopped into The Chalet at noon for our first visit. We all elected to order breakfast. Patti and Suz got the Light Breakfast and I went with the classic Steak and Eggs. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious! The prices were very reasonable and our waitress, Martha was superb! What we called a café in the fifties, The Chalet offers a chicken-fried steak that has me hooked. Yes, I'm pretty sure it is delivered frozen by a restaurant service, and then deep-fried in the kitchen, as most chicken-fried steak dishes in the area are, but I love it! I love the country gravy and mashed potatoes as well, and so I don't question their bonafides, either. I always order the fruit salad as my side, and recently I found fresh pineapple among the other fresh fruits! A huge step up from the sophistication level of the OLD Chalet, which was already my destination for my chicken-fried, this Texas cook hasn't made it at home since she discovered The Chalet. Delicious food here, I've only eaten their breakfast options, but it hits home. There's quite a lot of seating spaces despite the small size looking from the exterior. The servers were also very polite and definitely made the atmosphere feel more comfortable. I got the biscuits and gravy, which also comes with hash browns and either 4 strips of bacon or 4 sausage links. The biscuits were definitely the best part of the the dish -- buttery, soft, and SO TASTY. The gravy served as the perfect complement for it. Personally, I thought the hash browns had an odd, over-oiled type of taste, but adding ketchup helped that. My friend that I went with got the Denver Omelette, which he seemed to enjoy. Quick, friendly, classic breakfast diner food. My wife and I came in on a whim. I ordered a basic eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns, my wife ordered a meat omelet. Talk about perfect.... this was indeed PERFECT ! ... there are many facets to a proper plate and this restaurant and all their personnel... know how to do it RIGHT.... I have eaten in restaurants of all sorts for 50 years. Coast to coast and beyond USA borders.... this chicken fried steak and eggs with hash browns... absolutely 100% perfect. I can detail every single facet of the meal, including the waitress and all staff... but EVERY SINGLE facet was perfect. That does not happen that often in ANY restaurant. From the steak, to the quality of the eggs, the doneness of ALL of it... to portion, to presentation, to doneness and all that goes with it.... This was really top shelf... Went in on Friday. Katie was amazing. She was so friendly and attentive. Ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and it was huge. Love that they also have smaller options on the menu. Such a cute cozy place to eat. I took my granddaughter there once and she asked if we could go back for a second time. Will definitely make it a point to go back. A late lunch led to a perfectly delicious BLT on toast, paired with a nice big bowl of tomato bisque soup. One sandwich was more than enough for two. And then I drank their coffee which came with a carafe. I have to say it was the BEST coffee I have had in a long time. No bitterness. Just the right smooth flavor. I've been wantinng come to this establishment for quite some time. MMy wife and I finally made it. Walking in it is open and airy with a 1970's European -American diner feel. There are booths around the border, tables in the open space, and a long row of counter seats. The staff was friendly and efficient. If ordered, coffee is brought in a thermos pot tHat is left at the table. We found the coffee to be of good quality and taste. My wife ordered the breakfast special with Chalet cakes (pancakes). 1 egg, 2 link sausage, and hashbrowns included. Nothing special or memorable about it. I had the biscuits and gravy which comes with 4 sausage or bacon, and hashbrowns. The biscuits were good but fairly dense. Again, nothing remarkable about them. I'm glad we tried them out and we may go again someday. My final thought is that this is a place where you can get pretty average diner fare wIth friendly service. read more

Not a bad spot for breakfast overall. The bacon was a bit greasy and so were the hash browns, but the staff was lovely, chatty, and so friendly! It's worth coming here just for them. This place was very basic. We were shopping across the street, and felt it was a safe choice for a bite while babysitting my grandson. Actually, their spinach and bacon salad was pretty good, but everything else was just food. Not a big deal, but just looking around the place it seemed like it is probably better to come in for breakfast. There weren't many people in there when we had dinner. They should probably consider just being one of those breakfast and lunch places, only, and not be open for dinner. read more

Do you remember going here with your grandparents? I don't think anything's changed except my adult pallet. Lots of fried food, iceberg only "salad", thin soups. Our friend took us here because he loves their turkey dinner. Roasted turkey, stuffing, whipped potatoes (seemed like instant), gravy (canned?), overcooked carrots and a roll. House made blue cheese dressing (he needed 3) and cranberry sauce. He was happy and I wished I had ordered the same. I had a chicken fried steak with canned gravy and the same potatoes. The "steak" had a chem taste. Another in our group ordered the Pot roast - meat was fine, same potatoes, canned gravy. Another had the center cut pork chops with same potatoes and gravy. She said they tasted ok but were super thin. I think breakfast is probably good here and it's served all day. Service was good. So, I'm not saying it's terrible food and if you're looking for a nostalgic menu and food, this place is for you. read more

This has been a south hill staple forever! I went here with my grandmother on Father's Day. We were sat quickly since it was just the two of us and they were quite busy with a wait. The food is homestyle nothing gourmet or special. But the waffle like my grandmother gets is always good and the bacon is great. The pancakes are not good. The batter has been over worked so they are a little tough. The atmosphere is retro because it has not changed since it opened. The coffee is decent and the staff is always friendly. Bonus point for nostalgia. It's been 20+ years since I've been here, so decided to give it a try again for breakfast this morning. Some things never change, even though maybe they should. I know my taste for quality has spiked considerably since my last visit. I'm struggling awarding four stars for a breakfast joint that still serves boring food service coffee. This IS the northwest, for God's sake! Same with pastries. The cinnamon roll is generic food service variety, in a city with a plethora gourmet bakeries. The pros: super clean, good service, decent old-school food offerings. The Denver scramble was very good, although I knew better than to ask for any specialty cheeses on it. read more

I am typically not the type to leave a 1-star review, but we were so very disappointed with our meal. I got the turkey dinner and what I received was subpar at best. Two thin slices of what looked and tasted like deli meat atop soggy, mushy, flavorless stuffing smothered in brown gravy. The mashed potatoes advertised as included in the meal are in fact NOT included. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and was very upset to see they had smothered his food in brown gravy rather than the traditional (and photo advertized) country gravy. My boys got the cod and salmon and while they said it tasted ok, the portions were so small, I ended up having to cook them another meal. In any first visit, I always come for breakfast and order eggs benedict. If it's poor, I never return. The benedict served here is among the best I've ever enjoyed. I love the lemon wedge on the side, a tiny squeeze adds a bit of tart to the overall flavor. The staff are friendly and accommodating. I am obese and am often challenged by tight booths or tables. Been there forever, and I cannot count how many times I've driven by it since 1989....and never went in. How wrong I was, huh? This is a great diner. And easily one of the friendliest in town. Everybody in there was smiling and welcoming. We had not one, but three different servers come over and ask us how everything was, with genuine interest in our experience. Well, it was delicious. Wonderful house roasted turkey on my club, and my cup of clam chowder actually tasted like clam chowder. So many diner chowders unfortunately taste like corn starch. Also got to try my daughter's pancakes, and they were fluffy goodness. Pretty impressed on how quick we were able to be in and out of there, as well.
