My boyfriend took me for an overnight in DC for my 48th birthday and booked a reservation at Iron Gate for dinner last night. All I have to say is WOW.
From the minute we walked in the door, we were treated like royalty.
First, the atmosphere is unreal! Quaint, brick courtyard vibe with lots of greenery, white lights, vines, black wrought iron -- we loved the romantic courtyard feel! They apparently opened their one courtyard area that's normally reserved for private parties because of COVID-19, so we were immediately seated there.
Our server was Shek (as he put it: "Like Shrek without the 'r'." ) and he greeted us immediately and was warm, friendly, and knowledgeable. He wished me Happy Birthday as did the host (who turned out to be the manager) and spoke with us about the menu. Within seconds of being seated, we were served a complimentary appetizer (some sort of spicy feta dip with crackers and veggies - yum!) and two glasses of champagne. What a nice birthday surprise!
Alongside Shek was a lady named Erin who assisted him; Erin too was amazingly attentive and friendly. Neither Shek or Erin missed a beat. Aside from having to put our masks on every time someone approached our table (which is a COVID thing - no reflection on this place), we had a fun, carefree evening.
The food was phenomenal. My only 'dislike' was the Crispy Blue Catfish with Shaved Fennel, Pickled Chili, Olive, and Harissa Aioli. The ball-thingees were terribly "fishy" tasting but that's probably because-- well-- they're FISH. haha! But my boyfriend loved them and I enjoyed the yummy accoutrements that came on the plate.
I loved, loved, LOVED the Yogurt Roasted Eggplant with Fregula Tambouli, Feta, Mint, Pomegranate - out of this world! Also amazing: Shrimp Scampi with Spinach Malfade, Peperoncini, Dill, Garlic, and Breadcrumb, and the Focaccia
with Shaved Zucchini, Roasted Garlic, and Smoked Mozzarella.
The drinks were delish- Tim had the margarita; I drank wine. And as if this place didn't wow us enough, they treated us to two home-made cookies at the end of the meal plus a hand-written "thank-you" card from the staff. Whoa!
Pre-COVID Pandemic, Tim and I dine out a LOT and I truly feel that service is LACKING these days. You can have great food and atmosphere, but if you're treated poorly, that will make for a horrible dining experience every time! This placed WOWED us. Shek was so amazing, so friendly and knowledgeable.... Erin was kind, sweet, and attentive as well. This place will forever stand out in my mind and I'll refer the crap out of it (already have on social media) because of the PEOPLE and how they treated us. Like special guests in their own "home;" the next time we visit DC, we're sure to book another dinner date with Iron Gate.
If you're looking for a nice way to get out during this awful pandemic and want to go to a place that's taking COVID very seriously while also ensuring a magical experience, wonderful food and atmosphere, look no further and book a reservation here! Not cheap by any stretch, but well worth your money, I promise!! read more
