Hainan chicken
Amy L.

Ordered food togo and it took about 17-18 minutes for it to be done. It was during dinner so it was busy. The chicken wing was crispy and juicy. Not too salty either You cant really go wrong with the hainan chicnese since its their specialty but the rice was a bit too dry for me. I had to drown it in the soy sauce they provided. The red sauce was actually spicy today. Might have changed their recipe since it did look like it had more oil that usual.

Came here for an early dinner. Heard this place is very good and the wait can be long if you come later. Glad we came here at 5pm. You can find parking in the back of the restaurant and there also an underground parking. We parked in the underground parking and took the elevator up to the street level. The restaurant is nice and clean. Plenty of tables. They also have outdoor seatings. They have two sets of menus depending on the time of day. One set of menu is their Lunch/Dinner Menu. The other Menu is their Tea Time Menu, which is from 3:00pm - 4:45pm. We got seated right away since we came at 5pm. The staffs were nice and welcoming. We ordered the A1 - Roti Canai for Appertizer. For the Main Dishes, we got the R1 - Singapore Style Hainan Chicken Rice and the R4 - Nasi Lemak w/ Rendang Curry Beef. Foods came out so quickly. We loved the Roti Canai, it was so good. The Singapore Style Hainan Chicken Rice was not bad at all. It was tasty. As for the Nasi Lemak w/ Rendang Curry Beef, wow, it was so good! Loved every bites. I finished the whole thing. It was that good! Loved it! Would definitely come back here again in the future.

If you're craving legit Malaysian comfort food in the SGV, Ipoh Kopitiam in Alhambra definitely delivers!! This spot is always busy (expect a wait), but it makes sense once you taste the food. They really lean into traditional Ipoh-style flavors, and you can tell they care about authenticity. My personal favorites were the Milo (so rich and nostalgic) and the kaya toast. It was crispy, buttery, and perfectly sweet. Super simple but so satisfying. A lot of people rave about the wings and the Hainanese chicken rice too, and honestly, they live up to the hype. Overall: worth it for the flavors alone. I'll definitely be back.

Been wanting to try this spot and decided to try with my roommate! I love that they have yelp waitlist so I don't have to wait outside. The store itself is small but they are very fast. I personally really liked their appetizers more than their entree but I want to try the curry noodles next time! I would say the price is cheaper compared to the quality that you get. Would come back!

This place never disappoints--unless you enjoy being sad, in which case, go elsewhere. I've been here more times than I've checked my phone today, and we've got our all-star lineup on lock: Roti Canai, Hainan Chicken, Kaya toast... You know, the usual suspects. But today, plot twist--we discovered a new legend: Stir fried flat noodle with gravy sauce. Move over, old faves. Pro tip, and I mean this with love: put your name on the Yelp waitlist before you leave the house. Unless you enjoy staring at a line so long it makes the airport security queue look efficient. Seriously, pack a snack for the wait. Or just, you know, Yelp ahead like a civilized hangry human. Service is good, quick, and practical--like a friend who listens to your problems but also tells you when you've got spinach in your teeth. No fuss, no drama, just noodles and gratitude.

I prefer to Order takeout from here, because I do not want to wait in the long line. But for the times I've dined in, I've opted for patio seating because I can bring my dog! Food is always consistent and the service is quick. My favorite is the kaya toast. Their hainan chicken rice beats out savoy anytime. The chicken wings are nicely seasoned and tossed generously with garlic. Pineapple bun is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The beef rendang is also very flavorful and pairs nicely with the coconut rice. Because all their food is so good, I just wished the portions were bigger ! They opened a second location inside the food court at the Arcadia mall. I'll be looking forward to trying that out to see how it compares.

5 star for the roti 4 star for the hainan chicken 3 star herbal soup Previous review said the herbal soup meat fell off the bone and was perfection. Maybe it was an off day bc that wasn't the case for us today. Waited about 45 minutes to be seated off hours. Nice ambiance with little personal space but good enough for the meal. Milk tea was decent but not special. This place is on the Michelin guide, so expectations were kinda high. Will try other dishes next time but not gonna get the herbal soup again.

Cute Malaysian food place that has a breakfast and lunch menu depending what time you go. There's plenty of parking in the back of the restaurant. Ordering a set from the menu is the best way to go. Staff can also speak Chinese if you're more comfortable with that. They're super friendly and patient with any questions about the menu. Service was quick and food comes out fresh! The curry fish ball noodle soup was my main entree order. The curry fish balls we're well done and full of flavor. The curry sauce permeated more into the noodle soup, changing the taste of the noodles. It always comes with an egg option and up to your preference how it's done. Toast with Homemade Kaya and Butter is always a treat here. I personally love how they cut the crust off and leave them to be like little dessert sandwiches. Kaya is a sweet coconut and egg jam and generally sweet. Definitely not something you can find frequently served! Hot Milk Tea has refills. It's not overly sweet and is reminded me of a hot Hong Kong style milk tea. It comes with the set meal! Will be back again soon! We love the breakfast menu!

Authentic Malaysian and Singaporean food. As a Singaporean I was very excited that this level of authenticity and quality for the region's food exists here in LA. We came here on a Saturday evening, almost close to closing time, and were the last group to get seated. Had to make an order before the kitchen closed but thankfully a table cleared up so we could eat in the restaurant Got the prata, rendang, curry fish ball and laksa. My favorite was the rendang. It was tender and flavorful. The laksa was good and the prata was soft, fluffy, and crispy but I preferred the curry from the curry fish ball over the curry that was provided with the prata. I also almost cried when I saw Milo dinosaur on the menu since that is my childhood favourite. Overall great food, will return again.

I was really excited to try this place out since I always see a crowd outside and my best friend recommended this place to me. I came on a Friday evening and placed my name on the waitlist at around 5PM. I waited around 30 minutes before being sat. Their menu is filled with fan favorites like curry roti, hainan chicken, noodle soup, and a pineapple bun. My boyfriend and I wanted to try a variety of items so we opted for a chicken rice plate, hainan chicken, roti, & chicken wings. Every item except for the chicken wings came out in 5 minutes, which I appreciated since I was hungry. The Hainan chicken portion is quite small, which I didn't mind since I wasn't too hungry and there were other appetizers to pick at. I was quite disappointed with my first bite since the chicken and the rice lacked flavor. Usually the rice is seasoned and cooked with chicken broth and fat but I couldn't taste any of that here. The roti was good but nothing super special. I enjoyed my boyfriend's plate since the chicken had more flavor but it wasn't that much better than the Hainan chicken. The chicken wings were made to order so when we got them, they were piping hot! It looked really delicious but upon taking the first bite, more than half of it was breading. The breading did not have enough seasoning too. It was extremely oily as well. Overall, I'm glad I was able to give this restaurant a try. However, I don't think I will be coming back.

If you're looking for incredible Malaysian food in Monterey Park, this place absolutely lives up to the hype. Michelin Bib Gourmand-rated four years in a row, and once you visit, it's easy to see why. There's usually a line wrapped out the door--but trust me, it's worth the wait. The space itself is modern and comfortable, with both indoor and outdoor seating that makes it a great spot to hang out and enjoy a meal. The food is packed with bold flavors and just the right amount of spice--every dish feels thoughtfully made. You have to try the Malaysian coffee (kopi)--it's literally in the name, and it does not disappoint. Rich, smooth, and the perfect complement to the meal. My personal favorites are the Hainan chicken and the roti with chicken curry--both are absolute standouts. Honestly though, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Expect a crowd, bring your appetite, reasonably priced, and get ready for some seriously satisfying food.

You will be waiting at least 45 minutes if you want to eat here on a weekend evening. BUT it's worth it! I was really looking forward to trying their curry laksa. I have only tried Uncle Fung's laksa soup and fell in love with the curry coconut flavors. I thought Ipoh's Singaporean curry laksa was just as good, but definitely a lot spicier. I'm glad I had their roti to balance out the spice - super yummy and buttery. I can handle mild-medium spice but yeah, this was a little hard on my tummy lol. The pineapple bun was a nice way to finish the meal. Pretty sweet and very soft. I genuinely loved every aspect of this visit. I would just recommend adding your name to the waitlist on Yelp as soon as possible because this place is popping on the weekends.

Food here is amazing. Very authentic Malaysian food. There hasn't been a Malaysian restaurant this good since Little Malaysia in El Monte decided to retire. I'm so glad they got the stir fried noodles with gravy. They really got this one perfect. Their laksa is also perfect. The hainan is probably the weaker dish but I haven't seen any restaurant in USA done hainan chicken decent yet. Only dish I wish they have in the future is the black soy sauce turnip cake.(chai tow Kwai). That's one Malaysian dish I can't find anywhere. Will definitely be coming to eat here regularly!

The locals know of better spots. But I'm not local, so Savoy is all I've ever known…read more They have other items, but everyone comes here for chicken rice. Practically every table will have an order. Yeah, soft chicken - even the white meat, rice with a strong chicken flavor you didn't know existed, and excellent ginger sauce that surprisingly hasn't gone viral yet. Boneless chicken, by the way, so non-Canto friendly, and you saw that with the mosaic of people coming in to pick up an order. Me too, planning to pick up 2 orders before making my way Irvine, driving fast, faces pass, and I'm southbound. Jiving like Terry Crews. OK, maybe not "driving fast". This is LA, after all. But then the daily special menu caught my eye. It's Thursday. Chicken ala King, the chicken Al Fredo of Hong Kong, the one white sauce Western dish that HongKongers think of. It's fine. You have a job, and you're not here as often as you wish. Trigger pulled. And you're not the thermopile that you think you are anymore. Trigger pulled on the large chrysanthemum tea. And boy, do I NOT regret that decision. The flavors were on point, just like how it used to be in HK! The richness of the butter worked well with the flavor of the chicken. I don't feel as bad as enjoying the butter and cheeese combo that is Al Fredo but that's probably a bias I have. (The easiest place to get this in HK is actually KFC... But the execution is also pepper heavy there is no taste semblance to the original dish...) The tea is floral, sweet with a slight bitter aftertaste from being a little over brewed if your standard is Vita, but absolutely perfect for the heatwave. Service was great too. The boss lady smiled but was also very sharp. Got the tea immediately, no fuss about the ice, no hesitation and ready to switch when I asked if the adjacent container is milk tea. It's not. It's THEIR cappuchino. By the way, if you noticed the 3 veggie paintings on their wall, here's the irony... I'm pretty sure there's no leeks, carrots, or garlic used in making chicken rice. The yellow of the walls work well though, working in step with the sunset hues, and a far cry from the no-frills hospitial-wite walls of so many other Cantonese mom-n-pops. And sadly, no one comes close in the Bay Area, not even the 2 new shops in Millbrae dare I say. Parking isn't an issue. Valley Blvd is a busy street, but the side streets are residential. Try not to be on the other side of Valley though. Valley with its traffic is a pain in the rear to cross. Even if you're not a chicken. N if u gonn' say jo mama make it betta', lemme ask, jo mama make dat rice too? Sorry for Game-of-Throning in the beginning, but TBH it's not like this ESTABLISHMENT needs this review. So I came away thinking the chicken rice here was simply okay - not bad, but not particularly memorable either. The chicken itself was decent, but mine came out slightly overcooked. As a result, it lost some of the tenderness and velvety texture that defines truly great Hainanese chicken. The dryness also muted some of the natural flavor that should come through in the poached chicken. The rice was probably the biggest disappointment for me. Great Hainanese chicken rice should have a rich aroma from chicken stock, garlic, ginger, and rendered fat, with each grain distinct and flavorful on its own. Here, the rice felt a bit clumpy and lacked the deep, savory fragrance and chicken essence that elevate the dish. As for the condiments, they were adequate but unremarkable. The soy sauce and ginger sauce did their job of complementing the chicken, but neither stood out. The chili sauce had some heat and acidity. Still, it lacked the brightness and complexity that can really tie the entire plate together. Overall, nothing about the meal was bad. In fact, I can see why it satisfies many people looking for comforting chicken rice. But for me, the chicken, rice, and sauces never fully came together into a cohesive, standout dish. It's competent Hainanese Chicken Rice - just missing the extra depth, balance, and refinement that make the best versions truly special.

Nasi Ayam Kremes is a combination of Indonesian style fried chicken, white rice, perkedel (fried potato pattie), fried tofu, fried tempeh, and sayur asem soup. The chicken is deep fried after it's been cooked in herbs and fully marinated. Very flavorful as I can really taste the different herbs and spices. Over the fried chicken is a generous serving of savory crunchy crumbs. There's also a side of medium spicy house sambal. I would recommend adding some kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) and use this as dipping sauce. The half fried chicken is rather small, about the size of a Cornish hen. The soup is pretty good, even though I am not a fan of sayur asem soup. This tamarind-based soup contains green beans, chayote, corn rounds, and peanuts. The deep fried marinated tofu and tempeh are so yummy! They truly remind me of the good ol' days living in Indonesia, as they are the staple foods of the locals. The perkedel is just passable, possibly because it is served cold. Unfortunately, it isn't as crispy as it should be. The restaurant is small. Other than the kitchen crew, only one person was doing all the work. Good and very friendly service. My order did take a long time, however. If you're in a rush, you may want to eat somewhere else. Indo Bistro is the place where you really want to "santai" which means relax, take it easy. Indo Bistro is an Indonesian restaurant, mini-mart hybrid. After it is wrapped in fresh banana leaf, it is then char-grilled. Their lemper is really good, but very greasy. It's basically food and lip gloss in one. BOGO Lol Next time when I'm craving more Indonesian food, I'll be coming back to Indo Bistro. They have really good chicken satays.

We pointed out some allergies to the staff and he helped us work around it. The orders came out quickly and he checked in on us frequently to see if we were okay. Great service! Bakka Wild Salmon - This salmon had a lot of things going on for it, in a good way! The combination of flavors felt very refreshing, especially on a hot day. The lime and basil played a big part there. Crispy Short Rib with Lime - Even initially before coming here, this was the dish that caught our attention. I will admit the portion size was a bit smaller than I expected and was even skeptical when it came out. However, without a doubt, this was the highlight of the visit. As someone that loves savory foods, this really hit the spot. The burst of flavors settles in right away. Truffle Wok Seared Noodles - We wanted to pick this noodle dish as a balance to the protein dishes. It did its job but it tasted okay. Not something that stood out. Slow-Drip Vietnam Coffee Flan - I liked the caramel that was layered on the flan, it was crunchy and added a nice texture. It was a nice presentation but tasted okay. Thai Tea - This was my personal drink. It was a standard Thai tea but came with ice cream on top. It was not too sweet but didn't stand out compared to other items. Strawberry Pandan Lemonade - This was my girlfriend's drink. I had a small sip here but found it was refreshing and not too sweet. However, I didn't really get any pandan flavor, mainly strawberry. When it all comes together, it was a good experience. The interior of the story is more dimly lit and felt like a romantic night dinner, despite being the middle of the day. The dishes had a balance of standard and hidden gems. Everything was more than sufficient for two people to share. Service was great and very attentive. Will come back for the Crispy Short Ribs! American Express is accepted here.

A vibrant five foot lobster art installation greeted customers at the door. So cute I could almost…read moreeat it up. Its size should have alerted me to the offerings inside. Because once seated at the table, I spotted a staff member showing a live crab so big and rugged looking it could have been part of a prehistoric lineup. We whetted our appetite with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon, and then the food started coming out. It was a veritable feast. One that put some of the wedding banquets I've attended to shame. Every dish was superb, but if I could only choose half, these would be my favorites: -Braised Morel and Chicken Soup -Salted Egg Fried Shrimp -Vietnamese Style Filet Mignon -Salted Fish, Chicken, and Tofu Hot Pot -Vietnamese Style Black Pepper Fried Fish with Basil -House Special Vietnamese style lobster with noodles The runners-up: -Szechuan Fried Free-Range Chicken (Bone-in) -some kind of pork chop -Lotus and Wood Ear Stir Fry -Choy Sum Stir Fry -Steamed Garlic Alaskan King Crab The Hong Kong egg waffle dessert didn't quite land for me, making it the lone outlier in an otherwise spectacular spread. It was my first time trying Morel mushroom soup and Salted egg fried shrimp, and I cannot get enough of them. I hope to visit again very soon!

We went with a large party to celebrate a birthday. Food was very uneven: the lobster and shrimp…read morewere good, but others were just OK (three cup chicken) or even quite poor (the water vegetable and mapo tofu). We had a mix of older Taiwanese who wanted dishes the restaurant is known for, and others who had different tastes.. Also, they forgot 2 dishes. We informed them after we were done eating--they were starting to clear the table after they brought dessert. We said they could just be cancelled because dinner was over. They went into the kitchen and when they came back they said they had already started cooking them. What coincidental timing! After 5-10 min they brought the two dishes anyway (!). Poor service and likely an outright lie. Why wait until after dessert to bring out two savory dishes? Based on anecdotes from friends it seems like service and food quality depends a lot on who they are serving.
