I'm donut? matcha. $5.95 + tax as it's $2 more than an original. Soft with subtle sweetness and matcha. Good but pricey

I had heard about this Japanese donut brand a while ago when they first opened, and remembered they had giant lines. Based on this and their great for business but horrible for me (and most New Yorkers) location in Times Square, I planned on waiting a while to go here until the Instagram and TikTok hype died down. This worked out perfectly recently as I was walking home from a dinner at Ci Siamo, and as it was pretty late, there was a handful of people there but no line. The staff, when I walked inside, were friendly, and noted that a few things were sold out. They showed me the menu, and I got out of there quickly after ordering, as it only took a couple of minutes more. After looking through the board menu, I went with one of their signature donuts, an "I'm donut? matcha." The signature donuts range from $3.95 to $5.95 + tax, with mine being the latter price. The donuts are listed as nama/生, a Japanese term meaning raw or fresh, which you can also find with the excellent 'Royce brand of nama truffles. As with said truffles, it really means that they are soft enough that they melt in your mouth. The donut was pretty similar in texture to a powdered donut, though even softer. Outside of this, and not surprisingly for an Asian dessert, it was very lightly sweet, so if you're used to Krispy Kreme or similar, you might not like how subtle the sweetness is here. The matcha flavor was present with a mild bitterness, though I'm not sure if it was worth it for the extra $2 compared to the plain nama donut. If I were to go back here, I would potentially splurge on the sake cream or stick with their original. The latter feels more worth it as I definitely prefer the texture here over a standard donut, regardless of it being pretty small and pricey. Good for a one-and-done, otherwise.

The viral Japanese donuts open its first shop in NY and we had to pay a visit (actually 2 since we came back to purachse some for our trip back to CA) Sure the prices were a bit on the high side (hey we are in NY) but the donuts were pillowy soft and most of the flavor were delicious like the caramel espresso and matcha ! Worth the hype to swing by for some desserts that's overly sweet and looking for a change in donuts texture !

Ordered: I'm Donut? Original (~$4) Custard Cream (~$7) Glazed Ring (~$5) Aya's take: Wow, I'm blown away! I'm Donut? truly redefines what a donut can be and quite frankly has ruined all other donuts for me! The question mark in the name is a nod to their innovative approach & creative flavors. This is evident with their nama donuts, translating to "fresh" or "raw" in Japanese, which are unbelievably soft, fluffy, and moist. My favorite was the Custard Cream filled with a light and fluffy custard paired with the soft brioche exterior. It was truly unforgettable. The I'm Donut? Original and Glazed Ring were also absolutely delectable and gone in seconds! Chef Ryouta Hirako did his big one with this concept. I've never been more impressed with a donut and can't recommend it enough if you're in NYC.

Came here because we had time to waste before a show. The guy working said the Sakura was the best donut so we did - and it was delicious, although raspberry flavored which was confusing since Sakura should be cherry, right? The donut cost $8, so that's the ding. That's a lot to pay for a small donut!

It's fine. Maybe a fun splurge. Ambience is fine. Bright, modern, clean. You can see the donut assembly operation behind the counter, for better or worse. Service is great. You tick off your items on a clipboard and take it to the counter where you pay and pick up your order. I was told that the Sakura was out of stock when I first arrived but I asked the counter staff and they informed me that they do push out new batches regularly and it would be not about 10-15mins for the next batch. Couldn't wait initially but with that information I did come back later in the day to finally get my hands on it. Donuts are tasty with some interesting and intricate creations, including the latest specials. The Sakura had some good fruit flavor, and the milk tea had delightful notes of citrus playing very well with the earl grey. The donuts themselves have a nice chew while still being light. Then why only 3 stars? At their price point, the offering is about par. It's obviously in a different tier than Dunkin where $2 gets you an inconsistently and asymmetrically filled jelly donut. You're getting what you pay for. I'd give them credit for creativity and quality but it's still $8 for a donut. That said, there are tourist traps that'll charge you premium prices because of location and not deliver on quality, so at least that's not happening here. I could stretch to 4 stars but the value proposition just isn't there.

BLT donut sando. Fear not, the yolk will not run everywhere. I enjoyed the combination.

I enjoy the quality of the food every time. The donuts are not overly sweet, and they have unique flavors. Definitely worth trying it. I bring my friends visiting NYC to try these donuts out.

Reallllyyyy DELICIOUS!!! BEST DONUTS OF MY LIFE!!!! I honestly didn't think much of it, I didn't even want to get them cause I thought they were a bit pricey, but WOW. I can only dream to have this donut spot open up in my area. They were the perfect texture and literally melted in your mouth. They were pillowy and the flavors were great. I believe they're Japanese style donuts. It's a MUST try if you love donuts. They have some crazy flavors. Like a 5 min walk from the center of time square. Service was informative and the aesthetics are cute. The matcha no filling 8/10 Espresso filled 8/10 Original 10/10 Chocolate Shell 10/10

I went when there were no lines after a long dinner in luck of trying their Japanese donuts and all the matcha was sold out unfortunately :( The people working there told me it sells out by 5pm so definitely don't wait until after 9pm. They still had donuts but the regular Nama donut was sold out as well so I ordered a chocolate Nama donut and the cream filled milk tea donut with the oranges on top! Both of them were super good and I can't wait to go back to try the matcha cream donut. Maybe then I'll give it a 5 star rating as the flavors for me weren't my fave but I definitely love the texture of the donut and how soft and airy it is.

I very much appreciate a place that specializes in something and that's idonut. Their donut is light, fluffy, and surprisingly does not feel too sweet. I got their scrambled egg donut and the chocolate donut. The scrambled egg I wasn't the biggest fan of the filling (was cold) but the donut itself was divine. Also got the chocolate one which was light and airy and not too sweet. My friend got the teriyaki chicken sandwich donut and she really enjoyed it! Not sure if the base of the donut is different (it looked kind of different but I doubt it is). Def a good stop if you want a nice bite!

I've been hearing such great reviews about this place and finally made time to stop by. I decided to go with the original Nama and their royal tangerine with early grey. The texture of these donuts was definitely unique and very mochi like which I enjoyed. The tangerine was my favorite mostly because of the different flavors and layers compared to the just the original. I loved how the donuts weren't too sweet either. The cream inside wasn't overly strong in earl grey, but rather more subtle. If you enjoy cream puffs, I would lean towards the cream donuts! Overall great spot!

I came in a Wednesday late afternoon and it was quiet. Upon entry you see a large open space with display of types of donuts and a table with order sheets. You look at the sample display and on a sheet wrote how many and what types of donuts. First of all the place is clean and bright with view of staff either packing or baking the donuts. There's a display of merchs you see and also can order. One novelty item that I almost brought if the price is slightly lower was a water bottle that's the size of your palm. I would say two full gulps of water. Not sure how useful but cute... I bought the OG nama, chocolate Nama, & caramel espresso to taste. All were pillowy, not too sweet & the cream was light. The only downside for me really is that it tastes like brioche bread that I didn't feel like is a yeast donut. Like it didn't love it. The place is well run with great staff. Definitely support them if you are in the area.

It's not terrible, but if I waited any length of time for these donuts, I would've been disappointed. I fully anticipated a line upon approaching I'm donut, but quelle surprise, there was literally no wait today. I assume it was due to the cold, but I'm not complaining. You walk in, you're provided a clipboard with options, and fill it out before presenting it to the cashier. I really only wanted a savory variety, so I opted for the egg filled donut and received it quickly. It reminded me of pancake and eggs, the donut is sweet and soft, and the eggs are a bit tangy and...eggy. Remarkably cold. But that's it. No wow factor, no complex flavor, nothing. Maybe a sweet flavor would've fared better? But not horribly impressed with my first offering from I'm Donut.

    Ashley W.

Went in here on a whim, drawn by the interesting storefront sign! They only allow a certain amount of people in there at a time but luckily we didn't have to wait outside long. We went inside and filled out a form on a clipboard with our orders. I guess you need to get there early somedays because they run out of donuts! Although my husband disagrees that they should be called donuts because there's no donut hole? We got the chocolate donut, chocolate donut with banana cream and the yuzu champagne donut as well as a hojicha hot chocolate and black sesame coffee. Surprisingly the banana cream one was my favorite, I think because the yuzu was a bit sour and the chocolate donut was a bit plain. But the cream was perfect pairing to the chocolate donut. The black sesame coffee and hojicha hot chocolate were also very comforting on a cold day!

Donuts & coffee both good - Good. Experience a no go. They were pre- occupied with added fees. it's all they mentioned with each donut picked. It went like this - "A dozen doughnuts please" and I began pointing at quite regular looking donuts (all in the same rows) or so I thought. Next the woman is struggling with a paper by the register trying to figure out the coat of this dozen donuts (plus five with her added $1's) - then more struggle and I said " it's a dozen plus $5" thats $29.50". "Oh no you don't have a dozen". Apparently the extra $5 disqualified my "dozen". I know what you're thinking but No- no special donuts from some other case - no coffee rolls etc - i'm a NY'er and know a donut from a special roll etc. You need to buy five more for a dozen. "Oh? No, I have a dozen and am paying you five up charges as you stated." Next thing she is ringing the donuts individually Plus the extra $5 Which makes NO sense. But gets her another added $5 or so. Why would they keep quoting me add ons to my dozen if no dozen existed once you added a Boston creme etc. She raced to the manager. The Brooklynites thought ne a mean old lady for saying you're overcharging me'. The manager flew over - a young man huffy and emphatic that the five very ordinary donuts that were $5 more converted my dozen to a different price per donut. Then they said something funny to me - "would you like me to take those out and give you regular donuts?". No. (See update for more) " No those are the ones I want " but you just over charged me - I'll take them. But you are overcharging me. Thank you. Holy mackerel - just glad to be on the way out WITH the donuts of course- I was not furious or anything- and the donuts were never at risk- I'd not walk out on the donuts - My advice is to be more transparent in pricing and not deem very basic donuts special donuts - making your customers feel ripped off.- Better just to charge more for the dozen. And.. like other shops put any supposed special donuts in a special donut area - like coffee rolls, big fritters etc. That's how it's Typically done. This is New York! You can't pull that here. This is a place where people pay $6 for a good cookie. They are not cheap. Don't be weird at the register. And those cups Come on - are you KIDding me - pun intended. She grabbed the box and actually began getting ready to fling donuts around. It was totally weird. Had she actually not stopped trying to untie when asked I would have not taken them. It weirded me out. You say you keep the business the same since 1993? Well where is the Jelly Stick? A New Yok classic. So much for keeping it the same. Its on the sign over the counter and you don't make them any more .. so It is Not the same as it once was. Got ya! jk. And no.. no no.. I am Never mean or rude... just willing to say something. I didn't get a chance to eat these until later, but that Creme Brulee was a messy one. I would consider this a dessert (not since it technically is, but due to this being rich and heavy). The creme within seemed to be concentrated on one side, so this was the last side I ended up finishing. The mini was perfect and simple in vanilla. I finally ate the black & white the next morning, and this was probably my favorite; I ate each side equally until the end. I opted for the mini donuts with strawberry and ube flavors with sprinkle and snowy milk as the toppings. I also added fresh strawberries - and did I mention that the donuts are made fresh? All of that for just $13. I loved the mochi texture of these treats and I am looking forward to trying to new flavors next time! I was also eyeing the croffles because they looked almost like ice creams. You can get these to go or if you'd like to eat as you roam around, the owner will put them in a paper boat/container for you. She was so patient and makes all of her treats fresh it seems. Can't wait to come back to try the croffles!

If there ever was a perfect donut, Caroline's is the place to find it. The dough is fried, but airy…read moreand light, not at all greasy. Filled donuts are bursting at the seams with custard that tastes like egg yolks, cream, sugar, vanilla and little else. The orange cream cheese donut is generously frosted with, I'd guess, a mixture of cream cheese, marmalade, powdered sugar, and cream. Based on what we've tried, the donuts at Caroline's are old fashioned, unadulterated and excellent. I recently picked up four donuts for the fambly: the aforementioned orange cream cheese, creme brulee, Boston cream, and raspberry glaze donuts. This was in the afternoon around 4 p.m. and all of them were perfectly, wondrously fresh. The person at the counter (the male proprietor, I think) assured me in his charming French accent that they freshly fry donuts several times a day. Creme brulee was the fan favorite with the hard, crisp, sugar shell on top cracking delicately under a knife to reveal a loose, rich, custardy filling. But across the board, donuts were beautifully made (both aesthetic and delicious!), and well frosted / glazed / filled. The raspberry glaze by itself was a touch too sweet for our tastes, but applied with restraint so the overall effect was balanced. We are not in the donut market very often, but have had this place bookmarked ever since my esteemed Yelp colleague, Alan S., reviewed it last year. Now that we've tried these beauties, I think we're going to find many excuses to be back (e.g. for Hannukah sufganiyot, anything round for Lunar New Year, anything fried for Diwali, anything that can support a candle for birthdays, etc...).We really like this place and we suspect you will, too.

For so long, the Upper East Side was in desperate need of a really good donut shop. I'm not talking…read moreabout Dunkin, although there's a time and place for that. I'm talking about an establishment that makes high-quality gourmet treats. As you can imagine, I was thrilled to see this one opening in the neighborhood last year. I have been to Caroline's several times since it opened its doors to the public. I've tried a few of their items, including the glazed twist, Boston creme, coffee donut, and strawberry filled. The glaze twist is one of my favorites. It's wonderfully sweet while not cloying, and I especially enjoy topping it with the Bon Mama berry jam I have at home. The Boston creme is truly made with love. It's sufficiently stuffed with creme and topped with a thick layer of chocolate ganache - the expensive stuff! The coffee donut is also delicious. Of everything I've tried, the strawberry filled was my favorite. You can tell their strawberry compote is homemade and not too sweet. The dough is light and fluffy and generously coated with granulated sugar. What a treat!
