Il Piatto has the bones of a great restaurant -- and that's exactly what makes the service failures so frustrating.
Let's start with the good: the food is genuinely excellent. Every dish we had was well-prepared, flavorful, and clearly crafted with care. Our server was warm, personable, and knowledgeable when he was present -- and he went above and beyond by bringing us a complimentary taste of a new shrimp risotto they're testing out. It was delicious, and that gesture alone showed real hospitality instincts.
Now, the reality of the experience: we sat for 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us beyond water. Drinks took an unusually long time after ordering. The complimentary bread -- a staple at an Italian restaurant of this caliber -- never arrived. And when we finished our meal, our plates were cleared promptly, but then we waited another 30 minutes total just to receive and settle our check. We made it obvious we were looking around, made direct eye contact with the manager multiple times, and he never once approached our table. One check came back instead of three as requested, adding yet another unnecessary delay.
Then came the bill -- Il Piatto tacks on a mandatory 20% service fee that is not a tip and does not go to your server. This is separate from tax. A $35 dish doesn't stay $35 -- by the time tax and the service fee are applied, you're looking at closer to $50 before you've even considered leaving your server a gratuity. For a table of three, that adds up fast and feels like a blindside at the end of an already frustrating evening.
For a restaurant steps from the White House, charging prices that already reflect its location and ambition, the floor management is simply not matching the quality of the kitchen. A manager who notices guests waiting and does nothing (stopping by to check in on a noticeably eager table, asking the server to stop by, restructuring server sections, etc) is a management problem -- and that has a ceiling effect on the entire dining experience no matter how good the food is.
The food earns a 5. The server earns a 3. The overall experience -- held down by timing, a disengaged manager, and a fee structure that feels deliberately opaque -- earns a 2, and that's generous. I would not bring out-of-town guests or family here until the front-of-house operation and their billing practices catch up to what's coming out of the kitchen. read more
