Fantastic pasta, decent wine(I only tried one, so don't take my word for it, but consider corkage given the price), mixed service. Knocked a star off due to service experience and price vs value ratio.
Took my girlfriend here for a special night. I'd heard and read a lot of hype for this place and it was my plan B spot as my first pick, Vito's, just suffered a very unfortunate fire. C'est la vie. I'll split this into different sections.
Food:
The good: This was some of the best pasta I've ever had, the flavors were mostly on point and the fresh pasta texture was supreme. This was the kind of pasta where every bite got better and better, new flavors popping in and out of my awareness. This was clearly made by someone who knew how to cook. The bucatini.
The disappointing:
We got their special off-menu pasta with anchovies and breadcrumbs. I'd like to preface this saying I'm a big seafood guy, I cook with and eat anchovies on a regular basis. Love them. This pasta sounded right up my alley...however it wasn't. It tasted as if they had left the anchovies out too long or something. The pungent fishy note of the anchovies was more on the forefront rather than the delicious umami side. My girlfriend, a fellow seafood and anchovy fan, agreed. I did like the combination of flavors with the breadcrumbs and the pasta overall was acceptable. However, it didn't live up to either it's potential or the bar set by the other pastas we tried.
Also, we got the tiramisu at the end of the night. Loved the complimentary amaro. The tiramisu itself was unfortunately ruined by being topped with an excessive amount of dry, unground coffee beans. There were numerous whole coffee beans sat atop it. I think I see what they were going for, but these were very unpleasant to chew and way way too bitter for a dessert. Saying this as a 3-5 cup a day black coffee drinker. Way overboard y'all. Of course we picked these off half way through, but literally left a bad taste in my mouth for the last thing I ate here. The rest of the tiramisu was just average imo. Looked pretty though.
The focaccia was prettier than it tasted. It just tasted like average focaccia to me.
Wine:
Wow this wine list is huge. I took a suggestion from the server because I didn't know where to start. Paradox of choice is real y'all. Unfortunately, the wine we got was just good. Meaning, not great given the price imo. They are the type of restaurant that will let you sample the wine first and bring you another if you want, but I am not that type of customer. Maybe it was an unfortunate palate mismatch. Regardless the bottle I had didn't taste anything like the flavor profile I requested. I think the wine itself definitely had a fair bit of depth so it was definitely decent - but not decent enough to justify the price during this visit and hence I would probably just bring my own wine from now on and pay the corkage fee($30 when I checked online).
Ambience:
Really cool spot in the old homestead. However, we got sat on the covered back patio and the ambience was a lot more casual and low budget feeling for what kind of restaurant we were at. I could see it being nice for a big casual group, but if you're on a date I'd suggest staying inside
Finally, service:
The hostess was fantastic. The waitress we had was...unfortunately a bit of a let down. I say this as someone who was a server and did other customer service for over a decade, so I know what the job is like and what I think is a reasonable expectation at an expensive restaurant. She just didn't seem like she wanted to be there if I'm being honest. Bit of a buzzkill talking with her actually because she was so low energy. She did everything she needed to on a basic level, was polite, regularly checked on us, and refilled our wine. But it's like she was just working from a script, never really seemed to engage with us. When she was telling us the specials she very monotone and I kinda spaced out because she just talked for a while. Imo, if you're in customer service you should leave all your personal baggage at home and bring all your attention and energy forward for your customers. I didn't feel like we got that. However, the biggest thing for me was I felt like she really botched my wine recommendation. I asked for something like a fruit forward Bordeaux and she recommended a wine that turned out to be pretty dry and astringent. Not at all fruity. For the cost, I really expected better.
Anyways, I know I complained a lot in this review, but I hope the owners can take these as improvement recommendations. When I'm spending hundreds of dollars at your restaurant I just have different expectations than your everyday place.
I would happily dine here again for the delicious pasta, and I'd recommend others do so as well. Best pasta I've had in Seattle. Maybe bring your own wine. read more
