Last night, New Year's Eve, 2022. Made reservations in advance, for 5:30 pm. We figured before the busy time of the night. We were 7 people. Waiter came to take our orders, told us we had to order appetizers and main course now. We kindly asked not to rush us after the appetizers. Give us a break before bringing out main course. He said absolutely! Our appetizer dishes were taken away and 2 minutes later here are our main courses! I tried my best, but could only eat one shrimp. I asked to package it up. During our time there I was facing the glass door refrigerator, which contained bowls of seafood salad, grilled vegetable and so on. Not one bowl was covered, not even the fish salad! Never ate at this restaurant and I took a chance ordering catering for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day ! The food was amazing! All the fish dishes from Zuppa Di Pesce , Branzino Limonese, Shrimp Oregano, Baked Clams, Calamari Fritti was out of this world. The quality of the fish was very high standard. You walk into this restaurant and you've taken back in time, to the way the neighborhood used to be. It's nice, nothing extremely fancy, but it doesn't need to be. It feels the way 18th avenue once felt so many years ago. The Food is fantastic, pound for pound, some of the best you're going to get in the area. From their basic pomodoro, to their Pizza, to their risotto special, to their fish, to their mozzarella, I can go on and on and on. I've never had a meal here, where I've been disappointed. Il Colosseo is one of the family-run restaurants that is absolutely a favorite among the locals in Bensonhurst. It's equipped with a full bar and possibly all the wine choices you'd ever enjoy with Italian food. Upon arriving (no reservations), it was already pretty full, but get this - Il Colosseo is actually colossal. You think the large dining room is it, no! There's another section on its right side, which is great. It's a great restaurant for a date or for family because I'm sure there's enough space to fit all party sizes. The prices aren't bad - about $10-12 for penne vodka, which I loved. It was a lot of food too! Plus, they start you off with bread and butter, but it's alright, Il Colosseo is already my bread and butter. The servers are really helpful! Not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from but I've been here several times and never once has an issue with the service or food (maybe it's a hit or miss with some people?) Food is delightful and dishes are prepared exquisitely. My favorite appetizer is most definitely the grilled octopus. It's a staple for me to order this every time I visit. A few other dishes that I prefer include: Shrimp Scampi, Clams with Red Sauce & Linguine, and the Tiramisu. Shrimp Scampi is top notch and heavenly here. I love how rich it is without making you feel like you're eating tons of heavy carbs. It's probably my go-to dish for all future visits. I came here with my girlfriend because, under very odd circumstances, I lived right around the corner in Bensonhurt. We got some pizza for an appetizer, and then two spectacular pasta dishes. We left stuffed, and had the leftover Penne Vodka the next day. I have to say, I didn't know vodka pasta could taste that good--but it was certainly the best I'd ever had. With consideration for the portions, prices, flavor, and atmostphere, this is about as good as it gets. This place is great! I've walked by this place a million times but never thought to try it out until my friend told me about here. I've ordered a couple of things from here and everything has been spot on. I've tried their pizza, fried calamari, baked clams, and their pasta with tomato sauce. The pizza is one of the best in the area for sure! One thing I would say is I would have liked it a little bit crisper, but everyone knows it's different once it hits the box so not going to penalize for that. The pasta is fresh and the tomato sauce is amazing. Calamari is crispy and tender. The baked clams were also very flavorful and I would 100% reccomend. They also gave me a giant serving of bread. This is my neighborhood go to spot. If I don't know where I want to go or if I don't feel like driving across Brooklyn to Greenpoint, Bedstuy or Williamsburg. It's authentic Italian food. Can usually get a decent bottle of wine to go with my meals. We usually start off with the Misto Mare, a mix of grilled octopus, clams and shrimp. Always a good starter. We also do the mussels in a white or red sauce. It's always a good idea to ask what the specials of the day are. What I like is that they always change it up. Being a frequenting customer, I like that the specials always change. The whole fish is always a good pick. Always fresh and cooked just right. Last night, we had the risotto with prosciutto and figs. Very tasty with a sprinkle of grated cheese. The brick oven pizza is always a great choice. I love the char that they put on the crust. This is the best Italian food I've ever had. Everything from the appetizer, enter, and dessert was top of the line. For our appetizer we got the Vongole Grantinate, which was the 8 baked clams. Really had a ton of flavor and had the bread crumbs and splash of lemon that, all together, made for the perfect appetizer. Our entrees were cooked to order and we chose Penne for our pasta and for the salse we got the special which was Pumpkin Garlic and the standard Alla Frank Sinatra which consisted of black olives, clams, muscles, and shrimp. I don't usually order seafood sauce since it's usually overpriced and most restaurants are stingy when it comes to the quantity of seafood in a meal. I was really taken back at how much seafood was in the sauce and how great the quality was! The whole sauce was covered in fresh clams, muscles, and shrimp and it tasted delicious. The price for it was so reasonable too and I think that's what shocked me the most. The Pumpkin Garlic sauce also was delicious, from what I was told, and it probably should be added to the menu as a staple. Portion size was perfect too. Usually restaurants give an oversized portion, which isn't bad, the portion size here however was the perfect amount to fill someone up. Also, the bread is great to just clean the sauce on the plate. Lastly, for dessert we ordered the Torte di Ricotta which was the Italian Cheese Cake and the Profitterol which was the chocolate cream puffs. The cheesecake has a much smooth texture as opposed to many other cheesecakes since this was made of Ricotta cheese and not cream cheese. Really good cheesecake. The cream puffs consisted of a filling and covered in chocolate, it was simple and sweet. Really great spot to bring anyone for any occasion and I'll definitely be coming back in the future. Italian coworker of mine recommended this place so I visited after going to the NY Aquarium. I got a pizza, seafood risotto, custom snapper dish as it looked very fresh in ice, and a pizza. For dessert 2 orders of profiteroles. Oh and a bolognese pasta Thought it would be too much for my wife and my 2 kids. Think again. I haven't enjoyed a meal like this one in a long time. My family and I went here this past Saturday for an early dinner and we were starving! As soon as we entered, the waiter put a basket of bread at our table. Instead of the regular Italian bread most restaurants put on the table, this was a fresh and crusty round loaf. Delicious! For appetizers, we shared an order of baked clams and a plate of fresh mozzarella. The clams were a nice size and perfectly seasoned. The fresh mozzarella was bigger than I expected, and was served with tomato, roasted peppers, and olives. The meal was off to a great start. Then, our pasta dishes came out. My husband and daughter loved the vodka sauce, and my son raved about the pomodoro sauce. I hesitated ordering the broccoli rabe and shrimp over linguini, since broccoli rabe is a vegetable many places don't cook correctly and it comes out bitter. Not here. Perfect. For dessert my children ordered the Tartufo (vanilla and chocolate gelato bombe covered in chocolate) and I had the tiramisu. The tiramisu was surprisingly light and had just enough coffee flavor without being overpowering. The ONE issue we had was when my husband ordered regular coffee we were told they didn't have it - only cappuccino and espresso. Now, he was more than happy with his cappuccino and I always order espresso so we didn't care. I'm not sure if they never have it, or we were there too early and it wasn't brewed yet. You will be happy with any of their pasta dishes, but my favorite is a classic, the penne alla vodka. My grandfather loves their pizzas, which I sometimes order as takeout (I stopped because one of their employees makes me feel very uncomfortable via relentless sexual harassment every time I go there) as they do not offer a delivery service. The waitstaff is attentive and professional. I've never had a bad experience or a sub-par meal here. So, I've been living in Bensonhurst for a while now, and I never knew this place even existed. I decided to try it by recommendation from a woman I met in the nail salon and by fellow yelpers. To start, the decor is straight forward and simple, it has that "been in the family business" kind of feel. The clientele seems to be made up of locals, lots of Italian families and such, which gives it a very warm lived in sort of vibe (although don't mistake this for dingy- the place is immaculate!). Once you sit down you are promptly brought a basket of fresh bread and moments later bruschetta. (Very tasty- particularly since it's free!) My friend and I decided to order a bottle of wine- only $22 for Chardonnay! We decided to try one of their brick oven pizza's for an appetizer since they were reported to be on the small side. We ended up ordering the Capricciosa which comes tomatoes, mozzarella, prosciutto-cotto, artichokes, mushrooms, and olives. I must say- for someone who is a fan of thick Sicilian pizza- this think crust pie had me reeling. It was so good- and everything was fresh, none of that crappy canned mushroom/olive stuff! For the main dish. I ended up ordering Shrimp Francese ($18.50)(butter, white wine, and lemon sauce) with a side of capellini (thin spaghetti). The shrimp were ever so slightly over done- but the sauce was light and savory and the portion size was good. My co-diner ended up ordering one of the nightly specials which happened to be risotto with grilled prawns and pumpkin. I had a bite of hers and it was delicious. By the end of the meal I had hoped that I might have room for dessert but my friend and I were absolutely stuffed from all the food and wine. However, when I looked around there seemed to be a decent number of people ordering dessert so perhaps next time I will give it a go. Il Colosseo is a Buddha-send in this neighborhood! My sweetheart and I are regulars and rarely does it disappoint. The owner is going for a sophisticated take on "family-style" Italian food, this is not a "chicken parm" place to bust a gut on cheesy mediocrity. The decor could use an update, it looks like someone's basement rumpus room and having no windows doesn't help. But we love it for the food. Even the house wine by the glass is good. Best tip you'll hear: ALEAYS GET THE PASTA SPECIAL! It is always fresh and complex and delicious. The best one we got was made with a sauce of cuttlefish, which I wish they'd make a regular menu item, we'd never tasted anything like it, so special! Pizzas are fabulous, period. Crispy, delicate and fragrant. Sometimes we get one as a starter (they are small, and meant to be), especially the one with arugula and prosciutto. Also the fennel salad! We don't get the octopus anymore, because we feel bad eating them, but if you don't have the strange appreciation for them as animals that we do I admit it's a great dish. One weakness in the menu are the risottos, I've yet to have one there that wasn't undercooked and under seasoned. Too bad, and we've tried it half a dozen times. The meat entrees are good, not earthshaking, and the portions are too large. I know that's a sacrilege for some Bensonhurst diners, they expect to bust a gut when they go to a restaurant and are pissed off when they don't, regardless of how gross that may be. Satisfaction comes in many forms, people. If you're a diner that appreciates a great and satisfying meal out on all levels, I recommend two people splitting a salad, a pasta and entree. They will gladly split the pasta into two separate plates for you. It's plenty of food, I promise you. And that will leave room for dessert. And do not, I repeat, do NOT skip dessert! The Italian cheesecake is superb, sublime, with a hint of lemon and a vaguely fennel fragrant overtone, just like my Nana made. Upon showing up to the restaurant before it was even crowded we arrived to our table with a long black hair across the end of it next to my place setting, that when we asked to clean up, all they were going to do was change the place setting, not wipe the hair off!! Just the tip of the iceberg. Waiting over 1.5 hours for our entrees as we watched the restaurant fill up and others receive order after order was unacceptable, especially without any type of explanation. A table of 8 that literally shared 3 apps shouldn't have to wait that long while watching numerous tables around it fill in and be served, shouldn't have had to ask for another round while we waited that long, shouldn't have to worry about finding a fly in the water. Oh I forgot to mention the second hair on the table when we moved the bread basket. Not sure if that was there when we arrived or came as part of the bread. Okay so I finally got back here! Got to see a bit more of the place, including the wood burning oven. When you at pictures of what trattorias in Campana look like, this is pretty dead on. Service was good, especially considering we were just ordering pizza; the owner/manager in particular was very helpful. We got a few margaritas, as well as a capricciosa (olives, mushrooms, artichokes, proscuitto) and a house special (hot dog, mushrooms, ham). The toppings here ae the main attraction. They use here what is probably the best olive oil I've seen used on a pizza before. The tomatos are bright, flavorful with a mild acidity, the mozzarella is great, and it all balances beautifully. However, the crust doesn't match up, and if it did this would be among the city's best pizza. It lacked in both flavor and character, which disappointing as it was fine texturally and puffed up very nicely. With a little fermentation and some salt they could fix this, and no char was not really an issue either. This is weird because the crust wasn't an issue last time, so this may have been a fluke. As for the specialty pies, I thought they piled the toppings on a little too much, and they should cut things into smaller chunks as well. Still, the stuff they used was all top notch, including the hot dog. The hot dog was indeed great quality, but I didn't feel it added much to the pizza. People in the group just ended up picking these items off the pizzas and eating them, but nobody had any complaints. Regardless, the margarita had great balance to it, so much so that I still feel that this is a great pizza, crust nonwithstanding. This is obviously a place where the pizza is just the tip of the iceberg, and I will be back to try more of the menu (can't believe we got no octopus). I definitely feel better having tried it again, and while it may not be my first choice for this kind of food in south Brooklyn, its definitely a great place and deserves its increasingly positive reputation. read more

This is another spot that I would visit more often if only I lived closer. Il Colosseo is an Italian restaurant with a wood burning brick Pizza oven. It was one the first brick oven pizzeria's in NYC. It is located in the formerly very Italian neighborhood of Bensonhurst. I like il Colosseo for many reasons. It has very good food, it is very reasonably priced, and it is spotless. I order the Quatro Stagioni Pizza when I go. It has wild mushrooms, artichokes and ham on it. I recently ordered a steak with Broccoli Rape, and it was delicious also. If you go bring an Italian dictionary because everybody who works here speaks Italian, and they are not fond of English only speaking people. read more

The open kitchen is a nice touch but there is also a gritty looking fridge visible where mushrooms and other food are stored. Service: The service was quick, but the staff was cold. No one asked how we were doing after we got our food and only the busboys said thank you and goodbye as we left, and that was only because we turned to them and loudly said it first. Food: Firstly, the bread is hard and cold which is a disappointment at an Italian restaurant. We had fried calamari, penne vodka, and mushroom (funghi) risotto. Calamari was well cooked and a large portion, so overall it was nice. I think, however, that the breading could have used more seasoning. The risotto was not bad but a little bland as well. Maybe because we came on a Sunday night like one of the other reviewers who was not overly impressed, but while we liked Il Colosseo, we did not love it like so many of the other reviewers. The restaurant has a very local flavor and is a family oriented restaurant which I really like. The service was efficient (except we waited quite a while for our check...but then again you could say that they did not rush us) and I liked that they give you lemon to put in your water glass. The busboy from Albania was friendly but the rest of the staff was a bit standoffish and the person who I assume was the owner was not very friendly. That is until one of his regulars came in whereupon he was quite vivacious...to them, not us! The pizza is average at best. For a brick oven wood fed fire creation, the crust was more like local pizzeria crust. Our spaghetti with olive oil and garlic, however, was fabulous. The bread was good and the decaf cappuccino was excellent. We did not try the desserts but they looked very good. I was surprised that they don't have cannolis but maybe that was a good thing :-). I can't believe I have never been to this place until two weeks ago! It's hard to find a restaurant that matches up to the restaurants of Italy, but this place comes pretty close! Everything about this restaurant feels authentic, from the food to the people who work here. My friends and I came here after a day of possible starvation so getting started off with some bruschetta once we sat down was a win in my book! They have an open kitchen (love it) and nice wait staff. For an appetizer, we ordered baked clams, pretty good, not salty like a lot of other places make them. For main courses, we ordered seafood risotto, mushroom risotto and seafood linguine, simply delicious! The portions were huge to the point that my friend and I packed half of it to go. They're very generous with the seafood as well, taste was right, but a little too much garlic for me. For dessert, we had cheesecake and tiramisu, the waiter recommended the cheesecake. Yup, cheesecake was goood! It was nice and fluffy and not too sweet. The tiramisu wasn't as good, too much cream and too sweet, but strong coffee flavor. This is my new favorite Italian restaurant, definitely going to be back for the pizza. Must bring friends to eat more! =) read more
