4.5 stars for excellent service and excellent food The SO bought a groupon for this place (which was rejected... but sorted out with groupon later), so we made our way over. We arrived too early (the gap between lunch and dinner) so we had to wait in the car for about 30 mins and it was snowing :( BUT the wait was worth it. We were seated immediately, even though we arrived about 5 mins earlier than the official opening time (hey, it was cold and we were hungry). The waitress was a sweet young girl who was patient and had plenty of recommendations. The owner or head chef is korean (but don't let this take away from quality of the sushi!!). We bought about 4 different rolls and also got one to-go and they were all delicious. First was a free starter of a mini salad with a nutty salad dressing. Then our rolls came out quite quickly, as we were the only customers at the time. There were a lot of "regulars" who would come in for carry out (probably employees from neighboring office buildings). The volcano roll and spicy tuna were amazing (my two favorite), but I don't remember our other orders. I mentioned i had a craving for sushi and the SO brought up this place. Sigh... Where to begin. My boyfriend and I are SUSHI LOVERS. like.. LITERALLY. When we found out that we were moving into an apartment that had a japanese restaurant across the street from us we were THRILLED - until we actually got there. My wife and I had a terrible experience here. We came for dinner on a slow night, with fewer then half the tables occupied. It quickly became evident that our waitress was--flaky. We asked 3 times for tea, to no avail. We eventually had to flag down a different waitress after the food arrived and we still had nothing to drink. And the food didn't arrive for nearly a half an hour! The food itself was just ok. I had an assortment of nigiri, while my wife had the yakisoba. The fish was adequate but unexciting. I've known about this sushi place since I moved to Silver Spring, yet somehow I only just had a chance to try it. It's a cute restaurant in the Bennington Apartments and the staff is very nice. They have a sushi bar you can sit at while they make it, but also tables to just enjoy yourself with friends. I had a yellowtail sushi roll and teriyaki chicken. Both were fantastic! The sushi was very good and fresh, and the teriyaki chicken was very flavorful. I had leftovers that I almost left behind, but the staff sorta chased me down to make sure I didn't. I greatly appreciated that since I was clearly in a little food coma. I'm pleased to report it was much better - the service was still friendly, but on this visit our order was put in quickly, our sushi came out in a reasonable timeframe, and everything was pretty darn good. We started with miso soup and seaweed salad - standard and solid. Our spicy scallop roll was super super spicy (yum!), spicy tuna a bit more bearable, and the rainbow roll was just yummy. Husband and I visited IKKO one weeknight on vacation with friends who are regulars. The owner loves them and brought over some apps on the house- everything I tried was delicious! It's in a residental tower and the bathroom is outside the restaurant off the lobby of the building. That was strange. Husband had Udon and really enjoyed it. I ordered an Alaska Roll and a Philly Roll as well as a special roll that I'm having trouble remembering right now. Possibly the Dragon Roll? It's all blurring with the amount of food that was on the table. It was a Wednesday evening, so I think there were only two other occupied tables. I wish I had known how much food it was gonna be or I would not have ordered the Maryland roll. The wait staff even brought us a lot of extras with the meal - a baked mussel amuse-bouche, miso soup, edamame, and some fruit after the meal. This place is a hop and a skip away from where I live, so I've been here a few times. Pros - Great service, friendly staff, fast service Cons - The sushi is just okay - the fish is fresh but the creativity is lacking. It's not the kind of place that you crave, but rather the place you go to when you're in the mood for Japanese food, and don't want to walk too long or drive too far (if you live in downtown Silver Spring). Bottom line - there's better options a little further (Bethesda/Chevy Chase, etc), but if you're crunched for time, and want the basics, you won't be disappointed. read more

The food is good, but the wait time and service is really unpredictable when they're busy - we've had efficient service on some occasions, but other service that doubled our time at the restaurant. It's probably a best bet to go here during the week instead of the weekends to get the better service. They have a good variety of rolls that are different from the usual, but not all of them are successes. I'd recommend sticking with basic rolls and maybe throw in a special roll to see what you think of them. Thank everything that's good in this world for Yelp.com. This website, along with urbanspoon.com, has led us to many tasty places and helped me steer clear of places that would have been a waste of time and money. On the evening of my birthday, it led me to a nice little place called Ikko Sushi. Since Ms. Classy and I were on a date, I didn't pull out the old flash bulb camera and plop on my ratty fedora with the press pass sticking out of its side. I did, however, take some mental notes of our dining. First of which was the peanut sauce on the complimentary salad was really good. The sauce had a deep, unsweetened peanut flavor and the romaine lettuce and cherry tomatoes were the epitome of freshness. The miso soup was nice and smooth, not at all mealy, and also complimentary. There are other places where I had the privilege of paying for a soup that I didn't like as much. I was already very pleased and I had yet to spend one cent. For our specialty roll, we ordered the Volcano Roll. The first thing I noticed was the size. The pieces were larger than the standard sushi rolls, but not so big that one piece would be like trying to fit a tennis ball into your mouth. A few days later, I came back for lunch as a member of "the new media" (I love to make myself sound important). Since I was dining alone today, one roll would be just fine. Last time, we went for the Volcano Roll, so I went for the Tiger Roll today. I made my order at the counter, paid, then took my seat and pulled out my notebook and camera. I still don't have the knack for being suave at this whole taking pictures inside a restaurant thing. Do I just be nonchalant, confident, and casual and snap at my leisure, yet try not to draw any attention to myself? Do I first ask permission from the proprietors? Well, today I asked permission to get a photo of the sushi counter, which did get the manager summoned. I felt quite awkward and wished that I didn't ask for the picture and just sat in a far corner and snapped a few photos of my food without any notice. The manager, it turned out, was the nice lady that greeted me as I walked in and I noticed her saying goodbye and wishing a good day to exiting patrons. They did ask why I wanted a photo and I gave them an outdated business card that had only the information of my Baltimore blog and explained that I'm in the process of launching "Cheap Eats in DC" and would like to do a review of their fine restaurant. They were more than happy to let me take as many pictures as I like and the manager took $3.00 out of the register and gave it back to me. I have accepted free items in exchange for reviews before, but arrangements all have been made beforehand. When I scope out a place to review by my volition, I never ask for nor expect free items, so I immediately put the $3.00 into the tip jar on the counter. Now, to the sushi: the Tiger Roll consists of scallops and spicy crab meat on the inside, with several shrimp covering the top of the length of the roll. This roll had the right amount of spice where you could still feel the hint of it afterward, but it didn't detract at all from the flavor. A while back, Ms. Classy and I used to frequent this less than pleasurable place in College Park because we didn't know any better, but no more. But wait, my meal wasn't finished! The manager brought out a plate of six nigiri pieces: one shrimp, two tuna, two salmon, and one white tuna. They were fresh, cool, and savory and my lunch turned from a mid-sized munch to a complete stuffed stomach. Will I go back? New to the DC area, and lucky for me and my husband, this great sushi place is just down the street! It has become our go-to sushi joint and we will continue to go back! Salad (with a great peanut dressing) and miso are included with your order, and the rolls are generous portions and very tasty. The employees are great, but the service is a bit slow. We are often the only people in the resturant and it usually takes longer than expected to get our food. Not that we're in a rush to enjoy this great food! read more

I love, love, love me some Ikko. I've lived in Silver Spring for years and never knew about it until I moved a little closer to Chevy Chase. I haven't had anything here that wasn't happily devoured in five minutes flat. The caterpillar roll, the dragon roll, and the DC monument roll are all awesome (my boyfriend found the DC roll to be kind of strange as it isn't in traditional "sushi-roll" form, but for me, it's really really hard to go wrong with crabmeat, avocado, and raw tuna.) They are all pictured on the website's menu. I also really enjoyed the Las Vegas roll. The staff have never been anything but super friendly, even when busy, and it seems like everyone chips in to take care of the tables. One suggestion? More spicy rolls sans shrimp!!! We love spicy, but my squeeze is allergic. I'd give five stars if parking was a little more convenient. Or if I could afford one of those fancy apartments above the place. read more

Food/drink quality: So far, this is the best sushi restaurant we are enjoying in all of Silver Spring. The fish is fresh and abundant in the rolls, and the Yakisoba is very tasty. The miso soup is always comforting and they also have take-out! We really like the Rockn'Roll, Las Vegas Roll, Philadelphia and Ikko Dragon Roll 2. The menu offers bento boxes, sashimi, dragon boat sushi, many different combination of traditional and custom sushi rolls and fried noodles and udon. We haven't tried every roll yet but a few more visits will probably take care of that! Service: As soon as you walk into the restaurant, you are greeted by the hostess. Some nights are full, so be sure to call ahead or don't come hungry. The restaurant is relatively small, so be prepared. It is located within the storefront first floor of an apartment complex, with restrooms located away from the restaurant space into the resident area. No street parking but there is a Montgomery Parking Garage within a 5 minute walk Decoration: The space is very clean, small and cozy. Traditional Japanese characters and pictures adorn the wall.
