It's made to be split between at least 3 people and you must use a fork & knife to cut it & eat. It was one of the best rolls I've ever had though, so I strongly suggest you order it when coming here. We also had the dumplings (veggie/ I highly recommend) and the seaweed salad to start with. AND....*drum roll*...they're now open on Sunday's!!!! Wow, this place is excellent. I bought a Groupon for this place (after checking on Yelp first, of course) and am SO glad I did. It is my new favorite sushi place! We started off with miso soup and hot tea. The green tea was great - didn't have that funky smell some green tea gets. The miso soup was really good, as well, and they brought us little salads with peanut dressing - very refreshing. For our sushi entrees, we got the Washington monument roll, which was excellent. I am sadly allergic to shellfish, so we had to ask them not to put the crab meat on top. Our waitress was super nice about it, and it came looking just as delicious (and beautiful) sans crab meat. The sauces around it were really good, though I don't know what they were. The fish was really fresh, the avocado was perfectly ripe, and the rice was a great consistency. I would go back just for that roll (which is not a roll at all, but rather a tower of sushi deliciousness). For our actual rolls, we got a philly roll, a seaweed salad and avocado roll, and a veggie roll that had radish (maybe daikon?) in it. All of them were excellent. The fish and the veggies were extraordinarily fresh. The seaweed salad roll was something I'd never had before, but would eagerly have again. And each of those rolls (with the exception of the monument) were quite large and only $5 each. You can't beat that! I stopped by here on my way home after work and was really pleasantly surprised. For just over $10, I got a bottle of water, spicy tuna roll (my litmus test for sushi), and avocado roll (to round out a light dinner). Had I read the fine print that sushi rolls come with miso soup, I might have skipped the avocado roll. I'm glad I got it, though -- avocado can be as good an indicator as fish of freshness, and this was perfection. The spicy tuna roll was not the best I've had ever, but it was the best I've had in the DC area. Fresh tuna, cucumber, roe, and spicy mayo sauce. And it was really and truly spicy, unlike many I've had around here which would be better described as tepid tuna rolls. I'd guess the place is doing more NOAA lunch and carryout business, which is a shame, because the space is quite nice and it's a good spot for a casual dinner. There are tables outside, and a bit of a cafe atmosphere inside. I would have lingered a bit longer but there was seriously nobody there. So, I think this place could be a 5-star experience with one or two of the following: - More dinner traffic - A liquor license (sushi is always better when Kirin or sake is an option) - A clearer menu (there's an espresso machine, and a sign for bubble tea, but no indication of what drinks they serve) The more dinner traffic Yelpers can help with. So if you live in one of the umpteen high rises surrounding it, drop by for dinner sometime. The sushi is super fresh and the prices are better than the nearby Giant. Ikko is located near downtown Silver Spring on the ground floor of an office/residential building, which makes me think that it does the majority of its business during the work week. As such, I was cautious about trying it out on a Saturday night, fearful that the sushi wouldn't be as fresh. As it turns out, I needn't have worried. My friend and I were in a rush and in need of a convenient and light dinner, so we stopped by Ikko and ordered 3 rolls between the two of us: Spicy Tuna, Redskin Roll and the 007 roll. Most sushi places I've been to in the DC/MD/VA area will only give you complimentary soup/salad with a minimum purchase or an entree, so we also ordered 2 bowls of miso. Service was pleasant and prompt and we were surprised when our server brought out two bowls of miso AND two bowls of salad, on the house. The rolls were served without delay and surprisingly were very fresh and tasty. Including a soda, our total came to just over $25 for the two of us and we both left very satisfied. Stopped in quickly while waiting for someone in the adjoining Bennington. Took them longer to bring me my check than to seat me AND bring me my food. The length of time my entire meal took was tripled just by paying for it. So mediocre service, but better than average food, and very reasonable prices. I'm a little but ashamed that I was the duchess if Sushi Jin after eating here. Nice lighting, typical soft Japanese music in the background, pan Asian decor, and a small bar area where you can watch and eat. A little chalkboard at the door tells you the specials. I didn't get a chance to try the Monument roll everyone talks about; I'll probably wait until I'm here with someone else (Kristin M??). There's a limited offering of wine, but they have Barefoot so I'm happy :-) The food was the only 4-star part of my experience, but I definitely will give it another chance. read more

I absolutely love sushi...I can eat sushi all day! This place ranks on my top 10 list. It may not be the highest on my list but it is definitely there. They give you a good portion and it tastes amazing. The pricing isn't bad either. I say about half of the food on the menu are slightly cheaper than average sushi restaurants! The rolls though can go up pretty high but the portion is pretty good. I say the East West Highway Roll is a good deal, it's about 10 dollars and it's not bad. If you want to go higher in price, I recommend the D.C. Monument Roll and IKKO Dragon Roll. Service is excellent as well. They provide you with care and courtesy. I used to like ikko 1-2 years ago.. I still like their salmon nigiri and chef special rolls (although yes they are mediocre) but I am giving this restaurant a 2 star rating because their scallop and sweet shrimp nigiri is honestly inedible and should really be taken off the menu immediately. I ordered this 2 times the first time I did tell the owner that I can't eat the sweet shrimp because it was too fishy. This time I just couldn't complain the service was outstanding and so welcoming I didn't want to ruin it with my complaints. However the scallop tasted like a rotten fish bomb in my mouth. It was horrible and I pray for all those that ordered this and the sweet shrimp. The sweet shrimp I didn't even try because it was yellowish when I got it and I knew right away it wasn't fresh and the smell confirmed it. On top of that when we asked for possibly the miso ramen the server was honest and said too many people complained about it and she wouldn't recommend it. I don't blame the server I really think the owner needs to change her menu and take out some items instead of offering the bad items. A few truly bad items on the menu can really remind a customer why she'll never return read more

I can't say enough good things about Ikko. The sushi is always fresh, the staff is so friendly, and the prices are reasonable for the area. I'm a regular at Ikko and have never had a bad experience. They tend to get crowded starting around 6:30 PM but the service and food quality stays excellent. You get a small salad and miso soup with every order, which is a great way to start out. We normally get rolls and have had just about everything on the menu. They are all delicious! The DC monument and Las Vegas rolls are really creative and different, but they have more traditional offerings as well. The prices are reasonable enough to order several rolls and have a little bit of everything. They also give you fruit with your check as a nice little dessert. This is a truly exceptional place to eat and I highly recommend it! read more

Oh my... This might have been one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. To start, the sushi was phenomenal! I had the Washington Monument Roll and it was incredible. I don't think I will ever have it again (it was so intense) but it was incredible. It is not the most beautifully presented item (see caterpillar roll), but it tasted divine. As important as the quality of food was the service. The service and atmosphere of IKKO were the inspiration for me to create a Yelp account so I could tell the world. They never brought us our food! We ordered a couple of seaweed salads and a bunch of sushi and we got the salad then waited for over an hour. We each had somewhere to go so we just had to explain to the waitress that we had to leave. They comped us the salads but it was a really weird experience. It was surreal. There was no sense of urgency. I don't know what the sushi chef was doing. He didn't seem busy at all. I won't go back--too big of a risk! Try Kotobuki. They are great. read more

After seeing the reviews, I decided to give this place a go. I've been asking my friends from Japan what is the best sushi place in DC and they have given me a dismal, "there is no good sushi here." Sigh...so I took my quest elsewhere. IKKO actually turned out to be a good choice. I went during lunch and got one of the lunch deals (sushi, salad and soup) and was quite pleased. The sushi was fresh (note, sushi = nigiri, not rolls) and the service was fairly quick. I don't think I'll ever forget the first night I went to IKKO. It was freezing, I had no internet, and when I got there, I didn't realize they were actually having a power outage. Nonetheless, they welcomed me in, gave me free tea, and made me a delicious thing of sushi. That being said, going back a few more times, and I'm a pretty huge fan of IKKO, this place is really only slightly short of 5 stars in my book, but there are some very specific reasons for that. Pros: + Holy moley, the rolls are really well made and packed with flavor. Spicy tuna is a huge standard in most places, and IKKOs spice flavor is complex, well balanced, and hot. + I like the lump crab and old bay in the Baltimore + The DC monument is amazingly delicious if somewhat difficult to eat. + The older gentleman who is the sushi chef is fantastic at his craft, and amazingly friendly. + I'm not sure if this is a menu item, but the older gentleman gave me a free handroll made out of the exact same things as the DC monument. If anything, this handroll is actually brilliant. Heck, see if they might make it, it's amazing. Cons: - Ok, so the staff is all over the place. Most of the time they're amazing, but occasionally some of the younger girls seem to get distracted by their cellphones. It's upsetting. One of the other sushi chefs seems to be phoning it in. - The sashimi doesn't quite seem as good. The chirashi is very good value, but I'd give back a little for a nicer flavor. IKKO is delicious, and the folks are very nice. Stick to rolls, and you're gonna be happy. Definitely go when the older gentleman is working, you won't regret it! read more

I got the above for a night of take-home sushi with my girlfriend and it turned out to be one of the best finds in the area. And by area I mean the tri-state area. The prices were right, the sushi was fresh, well-formed and held its shape, flavor was amazing...no complaints! Their DC Monument is sure to entertain as well! It's basically a massive cylinder of sushi that you're going to have a hell of a time trying to eat neatly. But that won't matter to you once you taste it. The only thing that was tricky was parking... But we sneaked into a reserved spot while I ran in and grabbed the loot..er...sushi (same thing right?). Delicious sushi and wonderful customer service! Whenever I need to fulfill my sushi fix I come to IKKO Sushi. The space is relatively small but can pack quiet a bit of people especially on a busy night. I hate parking in downtown silver spring but thankfully there are several parking garages that line the street which makes getting to IKKO relatively painless. The staff is incredibly friendly and sweet. I've come in at almost closing time and they've still been incredibly welcoming and kind. Came in once and had one of the best server experiences of my life. I can't for the life of me remember her name but she was very young. She complimented us and even had a small conversation about hair and eyebrows ahah. Super duper sweet. As for food, we always order the dragon roll which is incredibly flavorful and delicious. Not to mention that the first time we came they gave us free mussels (? may have been oysters) as they were trying to incorporate something this into their menu and wanted some feedback! The only roll that I don't think lives up to the hype was the DC Monument roll. It's very expensive, not very filling, and not very flavorful. I would definitely skip that. If you want a convenient place for some high quality sushi this place is for you. My favorite is the chef special roll, its bunch of different things sliced up with this awesome spicy sauce. I think I would've given this place a higher rating if I was actually a sushi fan which I'm actually not. So there's nothing this place could've done. Great service! Really good deal on the lunch special. I had the udon and it came with 6 pieces of California roll and a small salad all for $10 (before tax)!! Really good prices on all the lunch special meals. The udon was nice and light and the tempura shrimp perfectly battered. The California roll was also very fresh. My boyfriend and I love Ikko - we order or dine in here at least every other week. The people that work here take friendly service to the next level. They usually give us lots of extra goodies like special mussels, tofu cakes, ice cream, or soup and salad. The regular sushi chef is great, and even the other ones are pretty good. Noaa roll, 007 roll, volcano roll, silver spring roll, philly roll, any of 'em are great, you can't miss. Word of warning about the DC monument roll. It is not a roll. It is a tower of imitation crab and rice. It's the sushi equivalent of those monster gimmick burgers you see on the food channel. Order with trepidation. They did bring back bubble tea, and I hate to say this because I really do love their food, but I just don't like the way they prepare the bubble tea. It's too cold and there are icey lumps in it. It is just not for me. So, I would order some japanese beer or hot tea instead. read more

The boyfriend and I came here solely because of the "zomg DC Monument" reviews. Normally, we're not maki fans....we prefer sashimi and nigiri. Still, how could we resist after reading so many rave reviews? The restaurant wasn't crowded when we arrived, so we were seated immediately. The staff members were all very nice, and were happy to make recommendations to us non-maki eaters. We of course ordered the DC Monument roll, as well as a few others, and we were sadly not blown away by anything. In all fairness, we might night be the best judges since we don't eat maki often, but I was hoping that with the creative execution, the flavors would be just as spectacular. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Don't get me wrong- nothing was bad or inedible. It just wasn't fantastic, either. IKKO is a bit off-the-beaten-path that is downtown Silver Spring, which makes it not terribly appealing to visit often. We drove up and weren't able to find street parking, so we had to pay to park in a nearby metered garage. Just be forewarned. read more

So ideally I'd give IKKO Sushi 3.5 stars. I went there with a friend for lunch on a Saturday. There were about 6 other people in the restaurant so needless to say, they weren't very busy. The waitress was at our table the moment we sat down asking what we wanted to drink and gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. Here's where they get the lower rating - despite the fact that they were empty by the time we ordered - they still took over 35 minutes to make us 3 rolls. The sushi chef was nice and gave us some edamame but I will still confused by the hold up. It was still an absurdly long time to wait for 3 rolls. The sushi itself was pretty okay. We had a rainbow roll, a philadelphia roll, and the tiger roll. They didn't have any really creative rolls on the menu that I just had to try and instead I picked out some standard rolls you can get everywhere. Anyway, IKKO sushi would probably get 4 stars if it weren't for the fact that it took 90 minutes to eat lunch on a Saturday at an empty restaurant. read more

Sushi in DC SUCKS (please message me privately if there's a place that you think is good that I have not tried) I LOVE their DC Monument roll just as everyone does too, the spicy tuna is perfectly seasoned and the amount of avocado is so so good! This place is tiny...very few tables to sit down. If you have a group of 5 or more, good luck! Even with the reservation, we (party of 8) had to wait quite some time. The service was...interesting. Our server didn't seem to speak English very well. When we ordered, she wanted to make sure that it was everything we were going to order for the whole night because they were so busy that the next order would take 40 or more minutes. She's telling us this and she hasn't even gone to the computer to place our orders in. Great, in addition to the wait for our table, it would be 40+ minutes for our orders. After taking our orders, our server asked everyone if we all wanted soup. I had to be the one and I asked for salad. She gave me a blank stare, and asked again, "soup?"... 7 people nodded their heads (thanks everyone), I still asked for salad. "Soup," she said, and proceeded to walk away. She eventually came back to our tables with soup. I asked her again if I could get a salad instead, she said "no!" She continued passing out the soups and left. To our surprise, she then returned to our table with salads! Even though it was the tiniest little plate of salad, still got salad! [Finally.] Our food came within a reasonable time (20ish mins) for being a pretty full restaurant. Food wasn't spectacular, tasted like any other decent sushi place. I've known about this sushi place since I moved to Silver Spring, yet somehow I only just had a chance to try it. It's a cute restaurant in the Bennington Apartments and the staff is very nice. They have a sushi bar you can sit at while they make it, but also tables to just enjoy yourself with friends. I had a yellowtail sushi roll and teriyaki chicken. Both were fantastic! The sushi was very good and fresh, and the teriyaki chicken was very flavorful. I had leftovers that I almost left behind, but the staff sorta chased me down to make sure I didn't. I greatly appreciated that since I was clearly in a little food coma. I'm not sure what took me so long to try this place out, but I certainly won't let much time pass before my next visit! read more

Hmm hate to take away stars because the sushi and other menu items are pretty good, but the service here is hit or miss. Call ahead for take-out because they are just too slow in general. I only put my order in at the desk because I had questions and sometimes you can't trust asking over the phone because it gets complicated. I came in today to order and was told it would take 15 minutes. I was first in line for take-out orders; there were four people behind me. Why did those four people get their food before me and why did it take damn near 30 mins to get my food? This lady and I had been sitting for over 20 mins (and still, she got her food before me). Hellooooo it doesn't take that long to cook tempura. Basically, the whole restaurant was weeded which is ridiculous since it is such a small place. Sushi chef was weeded, the hostess/cashier/server/busser (yes she was all 4) was weeded which really made me uncomfortable. As a former hostess/busser I was really frustrated with how she was handling the lunch rush. Tables were left dirty and chairs had not been pushed in...totally dangerous (and fire hazard) and were obviously in her way as she was serving patrons. She tripped and spilled miso soup at some point. The chairs not being pushed in bothered me so much I almost got up to push them in myself! I mean I hate to be anal about that kind of stuff, but once you have experience in the restaurant biz these things are easily bothersome. I FINALLY got my sushi craving in! Came here for lunch today and Ikko did not disappoint! This little gem is beneath the Bennington Apartments. Keep your eye out because if you're walking, you could pass it up. Parking may be difficult for those who drive here, as only street parking and garage parking is available nearby. The ambiance: Small and quaint! Walking in around 12:30pm, tons of tables were filled. Staff were super friendly and attentive the entire meal. The food: YUMMMM. They have lunch specials ranging from rice dishes (e.g. marinated pork on top of rice, bibimbap) to bento boxes and sushi platters. I went out on a limb and ordered the chirashi special. Being my first time here, I was quite nervous as some sushi places don't have tasty, fresh fish. While we waited for our food, they brought us miso soup and a small salad. Miso soup was typical and not too salty. The salad was fresh and tasty, tossed in a peanut/sesame dressing. I gotta find the recipe for that dressing. Alas, the chirashi came! For those who don't know what this dish is, it's basically a variety of sashimi pieces on top of rice. The presentation was absolutely gorgeous!!! Going counter clockwise starting with the salmon, toppings included two pieces of salmon (sake), red snapper (tai), white tuna (escolar), tuna (maguro), cooked mackerel (saba), yellowtail (hamachi), shrimp (ebi), and cooked egg (tamago). All of these deliciousness were on top of sushi rice, sprinkled with seaweed. There was also taro root, cucumber, daikon, and pickled daikon. I asked for a side of spicy mayo as well. All the fish were fresh aside from the red snapper. Unfortunately the red snapper was slightly frozen, chewy, and tasted like the ocean =( Hence the one star dock. Other than that mishap, I fell in love with the melt-in-your-mouth salmon and white tuna. You can't beat the price...$14.99 for all the sashimi, miso soup, and salad. If you're a purist when it comes to sushi, tending to chow down on just nigiri or sashimi, I don't recommend Ikko Sushi. I ordered the sashimi delux and the salmon was really fresh, otherwise the tuna was a bit gristly and nothing to write home about the flounder. The big ol'inconsistent chunks of fish was served with hot rice. My pal had the chirashi and it was one big abomination of stuff thrown into the bowl. Korean yellow raddish (not looking for a kimpab here) a handful of masago and an explosion of other random cuts of fish. Most folks here are chowing down on rolls and when we declined to order any the server said, "fo reals?" Saw a few of those abomination rolls (e.g. DC Monument rolls drenched in a crap load of sauce), if that's your thing then Ikko is a good bet. If you want to go to a place that has great quality fish, go to Sushi Taro or Tachibana. read more
