My mom and I generally go to Mylapore Fremont and get strong vegan filter coffee; it is made perfectly there. The strong vegan filter coffee here was too strong and it was not hot enough. Got the vegetable pakoda. There were no vegetables, there were only onions. The pakodas were too crunchy and unpleasant to eat, there was absolutely no flavor of any spice. It was inedible. I told my colleagues and friends in Folsom they were lucky to have mylapore restaurant in town. It serves some of the best South Indian food rivaling the restaurants in bayarea as well. Idly express which is their foray into the bayarea market doesn't disappoint at all. We got some idlis and vadas from their limited menu and the first spoonful of sambar dipped in vada gave me literal goosebumps. This is as good as any idli or vada or sambar or chutney you can find in India. I didn't dig their podi idli though. My only other complaint is their food packaging, three of our chutney containers opened up and spilled into the bag. It reminds me of the Saravana Bahavan in Chennai. 5/5 for all types of idly 1/5 for Masala vada We also tried their weekday special Masala Vada, absolutely tasteless, no salt and seasoning. The chutneys did not complement the taste as well. I could not eat more than one. Service is not that great when the place is crowded during the evening. They should have a announcement in the mic at least because we don't know whether our order is ready. Got a takeout lunch order last week. Puliyotharai, one container of Mirchi ka Salan, and Vadai to go. Vadai was crispy and great, even though we ate it 15 mins later at home. Puliyotharai taste was good, very satisfying, though the rice felt just a little too grainy for my liking. Mirchi ka Salan was amazing! Loved it. I wish there were more mirchis! I think it was a 24oz container, so it's a lot for 1meal. I froze half of it, to use another day, and it tasted the same/perfect a few days later. I can't believe I've never been here before! I had been craving south Indian food for some time now, and we were in the area, so we headed to Idly Express. I was so happy with the items we chose! Everything hit the spot! - idly: perfectly fluffy and soft - pongal: savory and flavorful - medhu vada: not too oily, light and tasty - sambar: balanced flavor, spices were not overwhelming, mild heat - onion & tomato uthappam: not too doughy (and each order has two!), and tasted great with their coconut chutney - rice kheer: perfectly sweet and oh-so-creamy, with tender cashews (the perfect way to end the meal) I should note that I am a wimp when it comes to spicy food, so I can't comment on any of the dishes that have chilis (or any real heat). Best idlys in Bay Area. Pillowy soft with sight tang from fermentation. High quality chutneys; the coconut chutney isn't some watered down version to save money and increase profitability. Like the quality of food from 15y ago before restaurants had to lower food quality to pay rent. Wow stunned at quality and texture of idlys. Definitely a life changing experience. Worth the visit even if you never had idlys before. Nothing like the texture and the mixing of dipping into sambar and various chutneys. Every bite is different. Delicious. The Bengali vegetarian curry; labra has some Sweetness in it. Probably not from added sugar. There was a entire cinnamon stick in it; reminds me of a Chinese 5 spice flavor but not as strong. Could not stop eating it. Finished half the container cold before putting it in the fridge. The recipes on the internet for Labra don't seem to capture this unique layered flavor. I have to say that when I try a new south Indian restaurant I make it a point to try the Idli, which is a steamed savory rice cake. It's supposed to be fluffy and light. But a lot of times the idli is not very soft because it is not fermented properly in cooler weather. This version was excellent. My search for the ultimate idli in the Bay Area has come to an end it seems like. Served with accompaniments of Sambar( vegetable stew) and coconut / tomato chutneys. I also ordered the vada which is like a savory donut. The vada was crunchy outside and soft inside. I had it for brunch but you could easily have it for dinner or lunch as well. Must say if you are a fan of filter coffee do try one. It may be a little milky for some but I like it that way. The place has no seating inside. There are a couple of tables outside. The best idlis in town! I've always been a fan of Madras Cafe, but this place surely surpasses them. The idlis are incredibly soft and spongy, and the sambar is perfectly flavorful. Idli vada combo had 2 thatte idlis and two vadas (and chutney and sambar). Incredible portion size for the price. Idlis were soft and vadas crisp. Mini idlis and podi idlis were also good but the idli-vada was definitely the star. If you order delivery like I did, consider putting the vadas in the air fryer for a couple of minutes and they should turn super crisp and fresh. Even worked for the one vada I left refrigerated for a day. read more
