It's been awhile since I've been here, so I was surprised to see how much they had expanded into the neighboring space, and updated the decor. Very nice and open, with a nice-sized stage for live music. It wasn't very crowded when I went with a friend, but we heard that they had a happy hour from 4-6. We weren't sure about it, but were pleased that they indeed have half-priced rolls. Naturally, they're not going to be as big as a normal-priced roll, but there's still plenty to eat. The waitress was pretty distracted talking on the phone when she seated us, which was kind of ehh, but afterward she was very nice and pleasant. Only thing is that delicious cinnamon-ginger tea I raved about before now costs $3.50 (!!!!!) a mug, and it gets cold really fast. :( Only real downside. Either way, this is a pretty awesome place, and one of the few places that still have a happy hour. It's Mondays through Thursdays from 4-6pm. I have a feeling I'll be making more visits here, even though it's quite out of my way. read more

She gave attitude because she placed a wrong order and blamed it on us when all of us witnessed when the correct order was given. Never refilled our waters and forgotten about certain orders/sides. This was a miss for us unfortunately. First tell is when you come at dinner time and absolutely no one is sitting at the bar. But the dining room had a decent amount of people in it so we stayed hopeful. Especially reading the outdated rave reviews on the wall. It's a fairly good sized place, decor has seen better days, the table had a filmy stickiness to it, and the background music had a weird r&b club vibe. I felt like it was trying to seduce me into thinking I'll have a decent experience. The menu is pretty standard, you'll see a lot of familiar items. We opted for gyoza, a caterpillar roll, sushi dinner, pepper splash roll, and toro special. Salad and miso were nothing memorable. The gyoza was a shame. While it had the charred look to the bottom, all of them were just completely soggy and limp. They did not hold together, they fell apart when picked up, the left the mouthfeel of oil on your lips...but what was most disappointing was that they were bland. At one point we held one up and it looked like a limp Heimlich (the fat caterpillar from A Bug's Life). Then the toro came, it actually wasn't bad. But then dinner came, and our hopes were dashed again. Rice was stale and clumpy, rolls were far too big in my opinion, and the salt seasoning on my pepper splash roll at one point gave me a mouthful of just salt that refused to be washed away by anything else. The real kicker though was that in the corner of the sushi dinner plate, there was a hair. It got taken back and were given new ginger/wasabi (that's what it touched) and we hesitantly dove in. The food also didn't come out together; one roll was for me and the rest was for him/shared and I waited at least 5-10 minutes for mine to come around before we could start eating. I normally finish off at sushi spots with oreo tempura, but the rest of the meal had me skeptical. Still, I went with it anyway. It was served with toothpicks to eat with which did nothing for me. When I bit into them, the tempura was think and doughy and just did not meet my expectations for a good send off. I was disappointed in the meal overall and some of the prices in general. I would definitely need convincing before trying this place again. It's closest to the house but we'd rather drive out further for something better for our wallets and our stomachs. read more

Just awesome. A great selection of food, even for my non-fish eating sushi-loving friends. They have several vegetarian rolls, a BLT roll and several other cooked rolls. The Happy Hour is wonderful, a great selection at LOW prices. I also like that the happy hour is from 3-6 pm. I can go for a late lunch or dinner that way. Their pineapple salad dressing is WOW. We have ordered take out sushi from here several times and have always been happy. The service is very good. The sushi is made to order so you will have a little wait. Have not dined in yet but plan too. We generally stick to the traditional sushi, but they do have a nice assortment to please all. They also have a large menu of entrees we have yet to try. read more

YUM! The food is fresh and well prepared. The shrimp stuffed shrimp is one my favorite appetizers in town and I love the Ginger Cinnamon tea. Probably my favorite sushi places in Anchorage. Pricing is fair and their delivery service is awesome!!! We like to order from this place for work lunches and also when we have guests visiting from out of state. The food is always good, never had a bad experience and even though I personally do not like too many raw/wild sushi rolls (Rock Shrimp Roll is spot on!!!), everything always looks great and everyone's happy with their order. Hands down the best sushi experience in Alaska. The Chef-owner is inspired to create original recipes that you can't find at any other place in Alaska. This restaurant does not share the same, uninspired 15 year old menu with the rest of Alaska's Japanese restaurants. The night I went, I ordered omakase style where the chef picks all of your dishes and each dish impressed me more. We started with a local sauteed razor clams in a spicy butter with mushrooms which was just superb. The stir fry was executed with what Chinese chefs refer to as the "Breath of the Dragon;" on a very hot wok, very quickly leaving a very distinctive flavor which let the quality ingredients do all the talking. It was an amazing way to start. This was followed by many, many smaller plates of very high quality sashimi with various sauces, ranging from citrusy vinaigrettes to a robust balsamic vinegar dip to accompany grilled sablefish. One clever dish was the Rib-Eye sushi, which was thinly butterflied rib-eye steak grilled with a torch at the table topping sushi rice sprinkled with various peppers and spices. This was very good and a good alternative for those of you that don't like fish. The atmosphere was very comfortable and pleasant. It was a Friday when i was there and a lovely jazz trio was playing at just the right volume inside the restaurant on their small performance stage. It was the ideal accompaniment to a weekend dinner with drinks. If you were ready to give up on Alaska Japanese food like I was, don't! Take heart! Yuck. Went in to get one roll. A crunch roll to go. It took over 20 mins to get it. The server kept talking and my roll was just waiting on the counter ‍ and the roll literally didn't taste like anything. Thank goodness for soy sauce. This place isn't too bad. The sushi is decent, but not great, and there are definitely better places in town. They have a smaller list of available special rolls, but it has a nice variety of flavors. We had the caterpillar roll, which was good. They have the usual nigiri fare, though the tuna nigiri to me had very little flavor to it, there was too much wasabi on it (especially because it was so bland), and it was cut in a strange way. The salad dressing that was on the basic lettuce most sushi places provide (along with miso soup) was kind of off-tasting. Not like it was old but just strange--maybe too sweet? I still can't place the flavor. My favorite dish was the black cod miso appetizer. Perfectly cooked, nice and moist and buttery. They have Sapporo on tap, which my husband liked, but the wine choices weren't that good. Service is fine, a little slow to start, but nothing problematic. Our server was also pleasant, which I appreciate. I doubt I'll head back there on my own accord, but I would find things I can enjoy if I did return. read more

I think however, whoever is making their rolls is different because the roll I received tonight was not the same recipe that I am used to getting in the past. While the roll was good. The atmosphere is nice. But the service is not amazing. Meals were not brought out together. On two occasions, we had one person without their entree while we share our plates to accommodate their not receiving their food. Our dinner companion waited an hour before they received their California roll, good food but expect slow service. read more

Great south side sushi spot! I Luv Sushi is definitely one of our favorite spots. Consistently great Japanese cuisine combined with great service and a very elegant and comfortable atmosphere. We have ordered from all over their menu including sashimi, sushi, tempura and other traditional Japanese offerings. One of my favorites is the tonkatna (a breaded pork cutlet) which is always juicy and makes a nice alternative to all of the seafood we consume. Their sesame chicken is also a non-sushi offering for the less adventurous of your party, and is the best of its kind in town, very well prepared, lightly breaded and just the right amount of sweetness. My favorite though is the sashimi and tempura combination. Along with great food they often have live music, nothing so much as to be overwhelming, but a nice compliment to the dining experience, usually jazz vocal or mellow rock. My husband and I love this cozy environment that is close to home. We've had a few romantic dinners here, especially when they've had live music. They've got 24 oz tap beers, good wines and saki. It's been a favorite place for us to go. So I really wish their tuna was FRESH. I didn't want to write this but after the second visit where I had to send back smelly raw tuna, I must say something. You can't run a sushi restaurant and put out less than VERY fresh raw fish as its gag worthy otherwise. The other food we've had has been really good. The tempura is light and crispy, the curry dishes delicious, appetizer of clams with mushrooms quite yummy and cooked just right. My husband loves the steak and I must say they rock that one consistently! The service is fair and friendly but not fast. It's not a place to be in a hurry, it's for visiting and dining. We've found the sushi bar tables to be more intimate when there's a mixed family bag there. But with an adult crowd, it's nice. Im not being a hater and this is a nice little place to go. The sushi always has a lovely presentation. We will come back again but I'm not ordering anything with raw fish in it because in my experience anyway, they have a pattern of stretching the limits of their sashimi. read more

My husband and I have been enjoying sushi for many years. We decided to try out this place due to many good reviews. Our first observation was that the menu was slightly limited with options for rolls. But we were hopeful and made a few selections. After waiting for 15 minutes, we finally were able to put in our drink order. We were pleasantly surprised that the price on the beer was much lower than what we were use to! This detail made me overlook the length of time we had to wait in order to the get waitresses attention. It took another 10 minutes before we were able to place our dinner order. We were a little surprised of this delay considering there were only three tables, including ourselves, being waited on at the time. It took nearly 45 minutes of waiting (again, only three tables in the restaurant) before we finally got our food. And it was mediocre at best. I have never experienced a roll that I was unable to keep down. Dynamite rolls are my absolute favorite, but I was very disappointed in the taste and appearance of this roll. Overall it was a disappointing and long drawn out experience at this restaurant. We will not be going back. read more

Was there for lunch. The menu says that the rolls come with soup and salad. No salad was served. Had the Waikiki rolls: NOT GOOD! Mango slices of differing quality on each roll and the crabmeat was a very odd taste. My server was very nice but took forever to take my order and never returned with the check; service was meh. WOW! I have never ever been disappointed going here. I enjoy the Waikiki roll. Husband often enjoys the wow roll. We love to get the crab stuffed shrimp and the jalapeño popper as well. Staff is GREAT. incredibly attentive and professional. Atmosphere was only made better when they expanded & now have live music! I believe only friday & Saturday nights but maybe others as well.
