I haven't had a bad experience at ReHaru to date. The restaurant is clean. The service is always friendly and the food is always good. When you enter the front doors the gentlemen behind the sushi counter says, "hello." We were seated quickly and bowls of hot miso soup are brought out. Our order consisted of deep fried gyoza, spicy tuna roll, and beef yakisoba. Each dish was as it should be, flavorful and fresh. Next time I am getting the chicken yakisoba. I'm spoiled. I grew up in anchorage when Japanese sushi holes in the wall were filled with smoke ( yuk) and the Japanese owners and patrons were all conversing in Japanese. And the sushi was complicated and simple at the same time. It was quite the let down to see the Denny's style ambiance...they've been open a year, and the decor, feel, din seems pretty American cafeteria style seating. It certainly is at a romantic spot. I asked if they had uni, s Sea urchin, they confessed they did not stock it, as it is expensive and gets old fast. That in itself told me that serious sushi customers were not patronizing reHARU. 5 stars for presentation. All of our dishes were plate art. I had Chiriashi. It is my go to to test a sushi restaurant. It was very fresh and the rice was flavored slightly , most excellent. Yet an establishment I shall revisit will,have earned my patronage by dolling up the chiriashi with tiny garnishes that can be mixed occasionally with each bite....example: Crab claw, radish sprout, shaved bamboo, shaved onion sprout, some roe, mini shroom sprouts, burdock root shaved peas, cucumber, avocado,sesame seeds, shaved seaweed.... The lack of those indicated a boring Americanized version of chiriashi. I want complicated flavor profiles mixing in my mouth please. Hot saki, the biggest let down. It wasn't hit, it was Luke warm and the server brought over our cups pre poured so we couldn't traditionally pour each other their first cup. I didn't even finish the first carafe. One of my guests had a roll with spicy tuna. I'm not a fan of anything spicy, I dint think for a second the Japanese grew jalapeños in the 19 th century or even the 20 th, Slice of any kind totally ruins sushi, Americans seem to like it....is it because they actually dint want to taste the fish? I don't get it. It could have been spiced spam? The indication I saw fairly immediately that this wasn't got to be a revisited place was the spicy icons next to quite a few items. Also, the nigiri section of the menu was about 4 square inches....1/60 th of the menu. They were pushing rolls.... Wife had grilled tofu, it was good. We had to ask for plates , dipping bowls, as they were not presented with our meal. We all three voted to not come back. If you like budget friendly fresh sushi, you will be happy. If you want a more traditional ambiance, complicated flavor profile experience......meh! Overall 3.75 Stars 1st time to this restaurant. Place is an open space with booths and tables and a semi private room. Decor was nice with Japanese inspired decorations, simple and classic. 4.25 Stars - Our server was pleasant, friendly and helpful. We had a few questions and he was able to answer them. Also, he gave a couple of recommendations too. He served us a Miso soup that automatically comes with the meal. This is usually an added cost but at this restaurant, it is part automatically part of whatever you order. 3.75 Stars - we ordered an appetizer and three different entrees. Appetizer: 3 Stars - Gyzoa - pan fried with a lightly sweetened soy based sauce. They were just ok. Nothing out of the ordinary. It tastes the same if I went to grocery store and bought a frozen bag and cooked them myself. Entrees: all Sushi's rated at 3.75 to 4 Stars. - three different Sushi platters. Each of the sushi were about 8 slices and were about 2" in circumference. Decent size rolls. Unagi Sushi section: 1. Dragon - BBQ Eel with Avocado and cucumber - rolled in Rice. 3.75 Stars 2. Haru Orgasm - BBQ Eel with Avocado, cucumber, spicy minced Tuna, and Panko fried Salmon. The cucumber and spicy tuna was inside the rice while the BBQ Eel, Panko Salmon and Roe were on top of the roll. 3.75 Stars 3. The Vegas - Sashimi ( raw) Salmon w Avocado and cucumber. The flavor of the Salmon was more pronounced than the Haru Orgasm due to the freshness of the salmon. Wasn't as fatty as we wanted but overall it was better than the other two rolls. 4 Stars The restaurant serves other Ethnic foods from Chinese Mongolian beef , Vietnamese Pho, and Japanese Udon noodles. Sushi is their speciality but it is good to have other types of to choose from. 3.5 Stars Prices were reasonable for: Appetizer 6 Gyzoa $10 Sushi's - 8 slices: $16-$18 So would I come back again? The answer is "Yes". Though I would try the Sashimi style due to my personal flavor profile and probably try their Udon noodles and tempura ingredients. After a busy day I needed a quick lunch refresh my day. I had not visited reHARU since returning to Anchorage on business, and was very satisfied with the meal and professional hospitality. Nice inviting restaurant with good seating, and warm ambiance. The chicken Katsu bento box was great, tempura shrimp arrived fresh out of the fryer yet was not greasy, and the chicken Katsu itself was great. Very nice meal for a quick lunch. read more

This place exceeded my expectations. This is one of my favorite sushi spots while visiting Alaska. The taste of the fish and portions are huge. Even compared to where I live in Hawaii, this is one of the best sushi places outside the islands. The staff is very friendly and courteous, checking on us very often. My favorite sushi here is the SMT (Scallop, Mayo, Tobikko) and it does not disappoint. Their smoked salmon nigiri and salmon nigiri are delicious and rolls aren't overly sauced. I wanted some really good fried rice so I asked my daughter and she told me about this place. I walked in and grabbed a menu and placed my order. I ordered the fried rice, veggie roll, and gyoza. The roll was really tasty, wish i had asked for extra soy sauce and wasabi, But I made it work. The gyoza were amazing, very favorable and the dipping sauce took my breath away. I've had other sauces and this was by far the best. Now the main reason i went and continue to go back is the fried rice. AMAZING! Food is good, location is nice, but the service is lacking. I looked at other poor reviews and many said the same thing. It seemed the issue was the waitress had too many tables or just doesn't know what it takes to earn a tip. She didn't take our order for a while and after she delivered the food she never came back. We had to flag down two other staff members to help us. I still gave a 10% tip, and she had the audacity to say "that's all?" For that reason alone, I will never go to this place again. A complaint should always have a suggestion to fix the problem and this is an easy one to fix with a little training. read more

ReHaru is a pretty solid sushi spot in South Anchorage near the Dimond Center. They're always doing amazing business, sometimes you'll catch the busy signal when calling for takeout... but it's worth calling back for. Don't get me wrong, this place is not traditional by any means. Their sushi is very Americanized, but that's pretty expected out here in AK. Their rolls are large, whether it's a specialty roll or a tekka maki. The miso soup leaves something to be desired, not super flavorful, and no wakame! Sometimes their avocado isn't ripe yet... All that to say they are using good quality, fresh fish which is namely what I'm looking for with sushi. Sake (salmon) nigiri is fatty, flavorful, tender, and creamy. The crazy boy roll is a great tempura roll, sauced up but ReHaru doesn't drench all their rolls in sauce. Their California roll has a nice creamy kanikama mix inside. So, far from the best sushi I've ever had - but they're one of the more affordable sushi spots in Anchorage and their sushi is pretty tasty! read more

There are many sushi spots in Anchorage, we are slowly trying some of them. We came about 6:45 and they are in full Covid mode. There was one group waiting to dine in ahead of us so we went back to the car to wait. Waited about 30-40 minutes which was longer than I would have liked but it was worth the wait. We got seated in the back but a booth opened up a little later and we moved. There was limited seating inside but all the booths were full so they weren't spacing those. We got miso soup to start, no salad like other places. For sushi we got Crazy boy roll, fish and chips roll, a special roll that had bulgogi on top, and an order of salmon sushi. One lady was serving all of the tables which was kind of a lot. Service wasn't too bad though and she was pretty nice. Food was delicious glad we tried this spot out. read more

Wow they have outdoor seating! I saw folks outside during Covid Nice. A buddy of mine back East was telling me how he had Sushi over the weekend and that just triggered my sushi mouth juices! Then 2 Volcano Rolls Inside: Spicy Tuna Outside: Scallop/Mayo/Tobiko. 2 Juliet Rolls (No Rice, wrapped in cucumber) Inside: Tuna, salmon, cooked shrimp, avocado and radish! Then I said I want a Caterpillar Roll for my daughter, she loves eel, but I don't like immigration crab meat. Came for dinner with 3 other friends. The food was great. The service unfortunately was very ODD. Server was rushing us, pushy, not attentive to water refills, it was a bit of a surprise as I had always only ever had a pleasant experience here. I'd love to keep coming back here but I definitely do not want to be seated at this persons section again. Hope it was an off day for this person but it definitely felt like (to all 4 of us) that they just did not feel there was much of an importance in providing the most basic/courtesy efforts that a server should be providing. read more

Let's get one thing straight: I am no authority on sushi. I eat sushi mainly as a way to assault my sinuses with too much wasabi. (or, in the case of nearly every Japanese restaurant in America: horseradish with green coloring) I don't eat sushi that much because I don't find it that filling...without spending grass-fed-ribeye-dinner levels of money, that is. Now I can eat sushi and still feel full, brilliant! I got the sashimi (typically sashimi is just slabs of raw fish, usually without any rice. Although, here, it had rice attached) one. I truly enjoyed the Large Sushi & Sashimi combo. It was worth $40 for this plate. Sashimi was amazing. The sushi was good, I wasn't a fan of the more wet type of sushi rice though. Coming from the Bay Area and having also lived in Santa Barbara, I like to think I have really high standards for sushi. I was so worried when I moved to Anchorage from CA that I would never find a good sushi place. I've tried Ronnie2 and was sooo incredibly disappointed. A friend who is local to Alaska highly recommended reHARU so I gave them a try for both takeout and dine in and it was pretty delicious!! I was really, really pleasantly surprised and happy to find a sushi spot that slaps. Their miso soup is great (I feel like you can tell a lot about a sushi spot based off of the quality of their miso), I've tried several of their baked rolls (pregnant), their pork spring roll appetizers, gyoza, as well as a basic raw spicy tuna roll (pre-pregnancy) and have loved everything I've gotten from here. Their Japanese noodles look fantastic, I can't wait to try their yakisoba noodles next. They're always super friendly when placing an order for takeout, and the dining area is really spacious and nice for eating in! The sushi kitchen is right in the middle of the restaurant so you can watch the chefs make rolls, which I think is a great thing and super important when trying to tell if a sushi place is going to be good or not. I'll definitely continue to come back here throughout my pregnancy and time in Anchorage. The service was excellent our server was very attentive and knew the menu well. We had 4 different sushi rolls, the raw fish was soft and had great texture, the flavors all melded together perfectly.
