As a Hawai'i Native, its hard to find great sushi outside of Hawai'i (other than Japan of course!), but we were craving sushi, so I turned to Yelp and we ended up at Miso Sushi. When we arrived, the parking lot was pretty small and seemed like it could fill up quickly during peak hours. We had to wait about 5 minutes for a table to be cleared before we could be seated. Once we sat down, I immediately noticed how sticky everything was! The table, the menus, and even the soy sauce (or "shoyu" for all my Hawai'i people) were noticeably sticky! The booth seats were also cracked. Luckily I was wearing long jeans so it didn't bother me too much. Normally, I don't mind a little noise, but the restaurant was extremely loud. Everyone around us seemed to be talking at full volume, to the point where we could hear entire conversations from other tables. It definitely took away from the overall dining experience and vibe. As for the service, it was underwhelming. Our drinks were never refilled, not even once, and we had to go without refills for the entire meal. I also noticed some of the staff eating behind the sushi bar while they were still working, which I found a little off-putting and unprofessional. We started with the garlic edamame, which was loaded with garlic, something I personally love. Unfortunately, the edamame itself was mushy and overcooked. We also ordered a shrimp tempura roll, combination fried rice, and a bulgogi bento. The shrimp tempura roll was decent and ended up being the best dish we ordered. The bulgogi bento, was VERY sweet, a little too sweet for my preference. The salad dressing wasn't anything particularly special, and the tempura was just okay. Overall, I really wanted to love this place, especially because I'm always on the hunt for good sushi outside of Hawai'i, but unfortunately, the food and overall atmosphere didn't quite meet my expectations. I'm almost at a four stars because the food was good, but just couldn't get there. First and foremost, we did like the food with the exception of the miso soup, which was nothing special. The meal and sushi were well prepared. The problem was the service and ambiance. No longer do they play cool music, instead it's cringe music coming from the kitchen area. We had to ask for water (and a water refill) several times. The key issue is cleanliness - YIKES - they need to shut down for at least a day and deep clean (especially the floors) and new paint is over due. I added all the wasabi on my plate and mixed it with soy sauce. But the after taste was old tuna after my first bite. I tried one more piece and same thing. This is small place in a strip mall. The staff was very welcoming and we were sat promptly. Our server quickly brought us iced water, miso soup and a salad while we looked at the menu. The unagi sushi was very good. I love soft shell crabs so we ordered that as an appetiser. The dish was bigger than expected and I really enjoyed the salad it came with. We ordered Sapporo on tap which was cold and good. I don't recall the name of the roll we got, but it was delicious! I enjoyed the different types of eggs and fish on it. Th spicy tuna roll was also really good. The only reason it's a 4 star vs a 5 star is because of the fried rice. We shouldn't have ordered it. My bf loves fried rice, but this is just not their strength. The chicken was cold cold in it and the beef was 50/50 chance of cold vs warm. 4.5 Stars Cute spot on strip mall. Yummy sushi and very welcoming, sweet staff. The Chirashi ($28) was sizeable and delicious (9 different items - 6 fish, imitation crab, fish eggs, and Tamago). When placing my order, the server very clearly asked whether I wanted the roll or the appetizer -- I confirmed my choice -- yet the order still came out wrong. It was frustrating because they paused and asked specifically, and still didn't get it right. On top of that, the server didn't seem familiar with the menu. I ordered the Sushi & Sashimi Combo, and they seemed confused about what it included and how it came out. When the order arrived, it was not what I asked for, and I had to flag someone down to fix it. For a restaurant at this level, attention to detail matters. If you're writing things down and double-confirming, there's no reason the order should be incorrect -- especially for something as simple as choosing between a roll or an appetizer. We walked in and I noticed a table was reserved for our family which I was very grateful for since we we're having a Birthday dinner. The atmosphere in this restaurant is so warm and inviting from the staff! We sat down and we're given menus right away. I ordered saki and the guys wanted a beer I don't know where you can go in Anchorage and get a kingstreet IPA on tap for $5 that price is crazy wonderful!! I'll be first to admit I probably did not do this place right. I ordered on doordash, and I got a bento box, not sushi. I thought the food was good, but it didn't blow me away. Despite the bento including a few pieces of sushi, I was bummed that there was no wasabi nor ginger. Tempura was great (isn't it always?) and the Mongolian beef was salty and great. I'd probably order again, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Out of all of the sushi restaurants in town, Miso Sushi has, by far, the best Chirashi bowl in town. My favorite thing about it is the generous amount tobiko and the pieces od tamago that you get with your sashimi. It's fresh, delicious, flavorful, and melt in your mouth! Miso Sushi has been around for a few years and occupies the spot where Sushi Ya used to be. Their menu has good options if you're looking to try sushi for the first time, or you're getting something traditional. The wait staff is very professional and they'll make sure you have everything you need. They check on their customers a fair amount. I'd like to see more Chirashi bowl options at this spot, as well as the other sushi restaurants in town. I think Anchorage could always do with more poke bowl spots. read more
