    Oysters

This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend and it was a great experience. We went during lunch hours. Huge portions and very reasonable prices. First, complementary edamame, which was perfectly salted. We ordered oysters as an appetizer, they were super fresh. I ordered the chicken teriyaki lunchbox which came with soup and salad to start, as well as a large portion of chicken, shrimp and veggies tempura, and 5 California rolls. The owner was very friendly and even gave us deep fried Oreos on the house. Wow they tasted amazing! I will be back soon!

Came for lunch with my 2 young kids and as we walked in, the owner who was serving didn't greet us warmly and just told us to sit at a certain table. After receiving water we ordered and as we were waiting, I received a FaceTime call and spoke to my husband and kids. As the owner came back to my area, he incoherently said "no speakerphone" walked away and tended to other customers without explanation. I was confused and told my husband what he said and proceeded to hang up. My husband then called the restaurant and spoke to the owner, to which the owner said I was too loud and could be heard all over the restaurant which didn't make sense because I could hear him across the restaurant on that call. He came back to the table and first pointed to this sign and said "we have sign right there, sorry". My appetite ended there and took my order to go which was disappointing since both my kids were hungry and we had just gotten there. I understand every owner can make policies for their establishments. But the way the owner handled the situation and gave no explanation until after my husband called, didn't make me feel at ease. I, myself have worked in restaurants and did not expect that kind of customer service. For an owner to blantly scold their customer and blame for being loud (even though I was not), was not acceptable.

Good food but a lot of sauce: couldn't really taste the fish at all.

Friendly staff good service. Food is larger portions. Sushi has a lot of sauce on it felt like it was a soup of sauce.

    Salmon Wrapping Zushi

I started coming here again after not having visited in years. I used to order their lobster roll, which was pretty good because it had three types of tobiko. They have a lovely chirashi inspired bowl called Wrapping Zushi. Whenever I'm here I order their Salmon Wrapping Zushi. It's super fresh tasting and it has a few pieces of fermented veggies and daikon radish. They also give you a generous amount of dried seaweed. I always order the Salmon Zushi with a generous amount of tobiko (fish eggs.) I really feel that the service here could be better. The wait staff usually takes a long time getting to tables, specifically when it's not busy at all. They don't really check in frequently. I find myself waiting a long time before flagging them down. I'm not sure if they're working on to go orders, but it usually happens when they're busy. That's my two cents.

Great food and fast service. They recently updated management so they have updated menus.

We were greeted kindly by every one in the restaurant . The lady guided us to our table and offered us refreshing iced cool water while we ordered. Started with meso to clean the palette. We ordered 2 California rolls and 3 other things off the menu. The quality was on point . Very high standard. Taste was sensational. We will definitely be back. Thankyou samurai sushi for making us a lovely meal.

I do not know what took so long to find this place. I'm terrible about checking in. We've been here about 9 times since discovering it only 3 weeks ago. 99% of the time, the service, the food and just ambiance in general is spot on. The people here are friendly, engaging, like to make sure their guests are cared for and satisfied. The food - some of the best I've had in Anchorage, period. Nothing I've eaten here has not tasted totally fresh, satisfying and delicious. They have a food that appeals to those that like "lots of things", and also incredible "simple" but so good other dishes. I'm very fond of hte Negi Salmon Roll, the Yakatori. And you have to try their Tempura Squid. And the prices seem much more reasonable than many of the other Sushi places in town.

Japchae with kimchi on the side

I came here with a party of 5, including myself, on a reservation. Coming in, you can see the open bar, which was a nice feature and added to the atmosphere of the restaurant. The ambiance is more on the cozy side, and the lighting is warm. We were brought to our table promptly and the waitress was nice and attentive. There were some other people in the restaurant but it wasn't particularly busy. We ordered our menus and were given miso soup and salad. However, we were given 4 salads instead of 5. We ordered one appetizer, the tempura calamari, (no picture) and it actually came out quite quickly, and a good portion at that too. I ordered the chicken katsu, which came with a giant portion- two layers of it! I enjoyed it, although if I was to be picky I would say it could be a little crunchier. I ordered damuji (pickled radish) on the side. It balances out the heaviness of the chicken katsu and cleans the palate. I would definitely recommend everyone to eat it this way. However, one thing I found weird was that the katsu wasn't served with shredded cabbage. Normally that's what it's served with instead of sautéed vegetables. (These are the testimonies of my group members.) "The shrimp tempura was a perfect dinner. For those venturing into Asian cuisine, this is a great option!" "The japchae was super good! The noodles were chewy but I wished there was more beef. However, there was a lot of variety in the vegetables and the flavor of the dish." "The coconut shrimp was slightly burnt but overall, I would recommend to a friend!" "The sushi was amazing! The size of the rolls was perfect for me."

Empty Glade plug-in, dirty, dusty plants and decor right next to my head. Tape rolling off of the wall.

Wow, where do I begin? We decided to try this restaurant based on the fairly good reviews here on Yelp. However, our experience doesn't even deserve a one star, honestly. We were seated shortly after we arrived, but didn't receive menus for about 5 minutes. It took another 20 minutes for the hostess/waitress to come back to get our order. She ran off before we could get our drink order in. I had to call her back over so we could order them. Our appetizers took about 20 minutes to come out, and this is where we really started noticing how people were treated. I watched as a young customer didn't have the money to pay for his meal, so he asked if he could call his mother so she could pay for it by phone. The waitress rudely refused to call and kept telling him to go sit down in his seat. It wasn't until another waitress came in that they finally called his mom. However, upon taking the credit card number over the phone, the waitress repeated every number (16 digit number, expiration, and CVV) loud enough for everyone in the dining room to hear. As soon as the payment went through, he was told repeatedly by both women to "now get out". During this time the first waitress also refused a small party because "she didn't have space", when in fact she had a table that just needed to be cleaned. After our appetizers, our entrees took another 20 mins to come out. Never got a drink refill, or asked how things were. I noticed how dirty the area next to us was. Right next to my head was an empty Glade plug in along with dusty dirty plants/decor (see photo). Tape was starting to roll off the wall. It was not visually appealing. The food was mediocre at best. I definitely would NOT recommend ordering by phone from this place based on how the credit card information was handled. We will not be going back, nor ordering from Samurai Sushi.

    Sushi for lunch!

I came down here a couple of times on the recommendation of current and former co-workers. Samurai Sushi Garden is located at the intersection of Debarr and Muldoon in the old Taco Bell building across from the Pizza Studio. The dining area is a beautiful sight with a large sushi bar set in the center accompanied with high-backed stools and a dark granite countertop where you can sit and watch the sushi chefs in action. An overhead TV screen plays sports above the bar while you wait for your order. We were greeted warmly by the very friendly manager who seated us at one of the tables by the windows. Upon looking at the menu, they had a vast selection of sushi rolls, teriyaki, and tempura dishes. It took me a few minutes to decide what I wanted with several items standing out which I really wanted to try. I finally settled on the Anchorage Roll (deep fried shrimp, spider....yes, that's what it says, avocado, cucumber, crab meat, topped with asparagus and a special house-made sauce). We also ordered the Monkey Brains for an appetizer (deep-fried spicy tuna and mushrooms....perfect for Halloween). The food came out in a few minutes, expertly prepared by the chefs at the counter. The Anchorage Roll was phenomenal with large chunks of delicious crab meat, crunchy cucumber, and soft white rice. The special sauce added a unique mix of salty and sweet flavor along with a small side of a wasabi "flower" for a spicy kick. The Monkey Brains was an apt name which is what the mushrooms looked like with the tuna placed in the middle. This was also delicious on a bed of lettuce with their House dressing. An item that I highly recommend to everyone from a previous visit is the specialty Potato Roll (a deep-fried roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, and crab meat). This was by far one of the best sushi rolls I have had recently along with the Gyoza which is available pan-fried or steamed. The Unaji (BBQ eel and vinegar rice) ordered by a co-worker, was my first time trying eel and it was delicious with a taste like beef but with a softer texture. To-go menus are available at the front counter and there are also numerous lunch and dinner combinations perfect for anyone wanting to try more than one item. I plan on coming back for the Ton Katsu (deep fried pork and vegetables with katsu sauce). This place along with the friendliness of the restaurant staff makes this my top destination for sushi in Anchorage when the craving hits.

They charge enough for the food, then the subpar service of 18% gratuity...Why is this taped in here and not better explained?

I really liked the way they had the inside decor, it was really set up nicely. I was looking at the beverage menu saw, Sapporo, okay great beer for a Sushi experience. I guess after looking over the Sushi offerings, it was hard to find a clean roll. Clean roll, to me means, no imitation crab in their roll. The one clean roll was the Spider Roll which we got 2 of. Of the 5 rolls we got the Spider was the favorite to me, I got the Hot Lava Roll not my favorite, but my wife ordered the Crazy Devil Roll it was good, and another clean roll was what my daughter got the 911 Roll. We all shared amongst the 3 of us. Something else missing was, miso soup or a ginger salad staples at Japanese Sushi places. Daughter's husband got Teriyaki Chicken, not a sushi guy Lol! I did get him to eat 1/2 a Spider Roll piece. Overall a 3.5 for Sushi, but ambiance 4.5. What I'd like more is clean sushi offerings, Naruto style, and a must have Unagi (Eel), Sweet Shrimp w/deep fried heads, Toro (Yellow Fin Tuna), and maybe some Alaskan Crab! Imitation crab is for newbie/beginners. Also too many offerings of cooked Tempura Shrimp added to many raw rolls. Elevate your Sushi Game!

The space has a modern Japanese minimalist aesthetic--clean lines, warm lighting, and a refined calm that feels both welcoming and quietly upscale. It's thoughtfully designed without being cold, striking a balance between contemporary elegance and comfort. Shabu-shabu here is on the pricier side, but the portioning justifies it. The small shabu-shabu easily feeds three to four people, especially when shared properly, and nothing about it felt skimpy or rushed. Three visits in, it continues to deliver!

The hot plates are spotlessly clean, I did notice, and there were instructions on the wall on how to cook shabu shabu. We used to come for the Tempura Udon which was spectacular. We were seated very quickly, and water was brought out. I decided to go with my benchmark dish, which always gives me some idea of whether I will return or not, and ordered chicken fried rice, husband got the tempura udon, so he could compare with the previous Udon we used to get here. I noticed that their soft drinks are only $2 which is an excellent price in my opinion. I got a Canada Dry as I love ginger ale. His Udon came out quite quickly, and we could instantly tell that the broth did not have the same depth of flavour, as when we used to come here, (it was quite smoky and very umami) and this one has a distinctly seaweed tang. Thats not to say that it's bad, it's just different. The noodles are also not quite so dense, chewy or toothsome. Additionally the tempura was somewhat of a letdown. The shrimps were very slimline compared to the display on the tv. There was an onion ring, that was also quite thin. Just not a good representation of tempura. Also, comparing with the Udon that used to be here, you also got a cup of miso soup, and a small salad with a carrot orange dressing. Those are gone. As for my chicken fried rice, well the presentation was excellent, it came on a beautiful plate, and looked very appetizing. The first couple of bites were really nice, plenty of carrots, broccoli, chicken, however I soon started encountering tender crisp onions. Which I cannot eat. They give me violent stomach pains. I can only eat onions that have been cooked down to almost mush. Anything raw or that has any element of crunch to it is a no-go, as it will make me ill. I found it somewhat unusual, as I get fried rice all over town and have never encountered chunky onions before. I'm sure I could have asked them to leave them out had I known they were going to be in there. It tasted good, for sure, but having to continually move the onions aside (and there was a lot of onions) was offputting. Normally when i get fried rice, I eat some, and take the rest in a to go box. I did not take the rest home this time which is very telling. Anyway, service was excellent, and they were very attentive - for instance our server saw that my husband was giving me a spoonful of his udon, and without being asked he came over with an extra spoon, small bowl, and a ladle, which I thought was very thoughtful. I cannot fault the staff.

Then of course, covid put paid to the dishes on the belt, but they still had the main menu, which does have a lot of dishes on, to be fair. Well i heard recently they had restarted the belt, so i was eager to go back and we went last night. Usually i like to sit at the bar because i feel more immersed in the experience, however we were shown to a table. That's not a big deal though - as long as i can reach the plates, it's all good. It's quite a big space, and has an airy feel. We were promptly given (ice) water. Which of course is standard in most restaurants but i don't drink it if it's got ice. We ordered drinks (Pepsi - no ice, please) and told our server we'd be dining from the belt, and could i have some Wasabi. She brought that quickly for me. I now know that i must mix my wasabi with soy sauce, i learned a long time ago, with a nostril searing experience when i first came to the USA "Ooh look at the pretty green stuff!" I learned that the pretty green stuff has an unexpected and vicious effect when you breathe out through your nose. The selection was definitely not as good as pre-covid, however, we were one of the 1st diners, and as the restaurant started to fill up, the chef was adding more dishes to the belt. The dishes however were as good as i remember. Yes, it's Westernized Sushi, and not a true Japanese authentic Sushi experience, where you sit at a bar, and a Sushi Master with 40 years experience makes your dishes right before your eyes, and personally hands them to you, one after the other, no choices involved - you get what he gives you, and no mixing your wasabi with your soy - he puts a smear on the piece itself if he feels it needs it.
