Since moving to Alaska, this is hands down the best sushi I've had in Anchorage. Truly authentic Japanese-style sushi with perfectly prepared shari (sushi rice) and fresh, beautifully presented neta (fish). The owner, Casey, is always warm and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. Their lunch bento is excellent too -- the black rice is flavorful, the tempura is crispy and light, and everything feels thoughtfully prepared. My favorite lunch is the sashimi kimchi box, and for dinner I highly recommend the Korean chirashi sushi -- super delicious, fresh, and healthy. Highly recommend for anyone who truly loves authentic sushi! read more

This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend and it was a great experience. We went during lunch hours. Huge portions and very reasonable prices. First, complementary edamame, which was perfectly salted. We ordered oysters as an appetizer, they were super fresh. I ordered the chicken teriyaki lunchbox which came with soup and salad to start, as well as a large portion of chicken, shrimp and veggies tempura, and 5 California rolls. The owner was very friendly and even gave us deep fried Oreos on the house. Wow they tasted amazing! I will be back soon! read more

Came for lunch with my 2 young kids and as we walked in, the owner who was serving didn't greet us warmly and just told us to sit at a certain table. After receiving water we ordered and as we were waiting, I received a FaceTime call and spoke to my husband and kids. As the owner came back to my area, he incoherently said "no speakerphone" walked away and tended to other customers without explanation. I was confused and told my husband what he said and proceeded to hang up. My husband then called the restaurant and spoke to the owner, to which the owner said I was too loud and could be heard all over the restaurant which didn't make sense because I could hear him across the restaurant on that call. He came back to the table and first pointed to this sign and said "we have sign right there, sorry". My appetite ended there and took my order to go which was disappointing since both my kids were hungry and we had just gotten there. I understand every owner can make policies for their establishments. But the way the owner handled the situation and gave no explanation until after my husband called, didn't make me feel at ease. I, myself have worked in restaurants and did not expect that kind of customer service. For an owner to blantly scold their customer and blame for being loud (even though I was not), was not acceptable. read more

I started coming here again after not having visited in years. I used to order their lobster roll, which was pretty good because it had three types of tobiko. They have a lovely chirashi inspired bowl called Wrapping Zushi. Whenever I'm here I order their Salmon Wrapping Zushi. It's super fresh tasting and it has a few pieces of fermented veggies and daikon radish. They also give you a generous amount of dried seaweed. I always order the Salmon Zushi with a generous amount of tobiko (fish eggs.) I really feel that the service here could be better. The wait staff usually takes a long time getting to tables, specifically when it's not busy at all. They don't really check in frequently. I find myself waiting a long time before flagging them down. I'm not sure if they're working on to go orders, but it usually happens when they're busy. That's my two cents. read more

It pains me to do this since I used to love this place. I tried to come here with a fairly large group of friends one night, as we used to do every Saturday night many years ago. The staff must be different now as I don't think this incident would have happened when we were coming here regularly. The one sushi chef working at the bar asked how many we people had and if we had reservations. We didn't since in the past we didn't need them and we weren't sure exactly how many people would be in our party that night. When he told him our approximate party number, the sushi chef just told us, "We don't have a table for you" more than once. We were willing to split our party between two tables or wait for a table to become available, but he still denied us service. We also offered to sit at the sushi bar, but apparently it was closed for seating. The chairs were at the bar and there was nothing to indicate the sushi bar was closed for seating. I understand this is a difficult time for local businesses given the ongoing pandemic. However, the restaurant could have better communication about their policies and be a little more polite if they're going to turn away customers before they even get in the door. Anyway, if you have a larger party (5+ people), call to make reservations. Probably just as well we didn't get in here looking at their most recent health score. At least I can laugh over the hilarious irony of aforementioned sushi chef wearing a "Live Laugh Love" baseball cap as he rudely refused to serve us. read more

Our family's favorite sushi place in town. We live on the south side but drive over to the east side every time we want sushi. The Beef Teriyaki Bento Box is my son's go to when ordering. I do not know what took so long to find this place. I'm terrible about checking in. We've been here about 9 times since discovering it only 3 weeks ago. 99% of the time, the service, the food and just ambiance in general is spot on. The people here are friendly, engaging, like to make sure their guests are cared for and satisfied. The food - some of the best I've had in Anchorage, period. Nothing I've eaten here has not tasted totally fresh, satisfying and delicious. They have a food that appeals to those that like "lots of things", and also incredible "simple" but so good other dishes. I'm very fond of hte Negi Salmon Roll, the Yakatori. And you have to try their Tempura Squid. And the prices seem much more reasonable than many of the other Sushi places in town. read more

Food was great and fresh. We came for lunch so it was basically empty. The service was pretty much on it since we were the only ones there. The waitress was kind and attentive without being overbearing and extra. The food came fast and fresh. Tempura veggies and shrimp were on point. We got the Mt. Sleeping Lady Roll which was really good. The bulgogi and Teri chicken also good. Bathrooms were clean. The lunch box prices were pretty decent and the rolls are a little spendy, but quality. I think the only odd thing was that the music was playing country and oldies which isn't really what I would expect in a Japanese restaurant, but it wasn't a deal breaker. read more

I came here with a party of 5, including myself, on a reservation. Coming in, you can see the open bar, which was a nice feature and added to the atmosphere of the restaurant. The ambiance is more on the cozy side, and the lighting is warm. We were brought to our table promptly and the waitress was nice and attentive. There were some other people in the restaurant but it wasn't particularly busy. We ordered our menus and were given miso soup and salad. However, we were given 4 salads instead of 5. We ordered one appetizer, the tempura calamari, (no picture) and it actually came out quite quickly, and a good portion at that too. I ordered the chicken katsu, which came with a giant portion- two layers of it! I enjoyed it, although if I was to be picky I would say it could be a little crunchier. I ordered damuji (pickled radish) on the side. It balances out the heaviness of the chicken katsu and cleans the palate. I would definitely recommend everyone to eat it this way. However, one thing I found weird was that the katsu wasn't served with shredded cabbage. Normally that's what it's served with instead of sautéed vegetables. (These are the testimonies of my group members.) "The shrimp tempura was a perfect dinner. For those venturing into Asian cuisine, this is a great option!" "The japchae was super good! The noodles were chewy but I wished there was more beef. However, there was a lot of variety in the vegetables and the flavor of the dish." "The coconut shrimp was slightly burnt but overall, I would recommend to a friend!" "The sushi was amazing! The size of the rolls was perfect for me." read more

Wow, where do I begin? We decided to try this restaurant based on the fairly good reviews here on Yelp. However, our experience doesn't even deserve a one star, honestly. We were seated shortly after we arrived, but didn't receive menus for about 5 minutes. It took another 20 minutes for the hostess/waitress to come back to get our order. She ran off before we could get our drink order in. I had to call her back over so we could order them. Our appetizers took about 20 minutes to come out, and this is where we really started noticing how people were treated. I watched as a young customer didn't have the money to pay for his meal, so he asked if he could call his mother so she could pay for it by phone. The waitress rudely refused to call and kept telling him to go sit down in his seat. It wasn't until another waitress came in that they finally called his mom. However, upon taking the credit card number over the phone, the waitress repeated every number (16 digit number, expiration, and CVV) loud enough for everyone in the dining room to hear. As soon as the payment went through, he was told repeatedly by both women to "now get out". During this time the first waitress also refused a small party because "she didn't have space", when in fact she had a table that just needed to be cleaned. After our appetizers, our entrees took another 20 mins to come out. Never got a drink refill, or asked how things were. I noticed how dirty the area next to us was. Right next to my head was an empty Glade plug in along with dusty dirty plants/decor (see photo). Tape was starting to roll off the wall. It was not visually appealing. The food was mediocre at best. I definitely would NOT recommend ordering by phone from this place based on how the credit card information was handled. We will not be going back, nor ordering from Samurai Sushi. read more

I came down here a couple of times on the recommendation of current and former co-workers. Samurai Sushi Garden is located at the intersection of Debarr and Muldoon in the old Taco Bell building across from the Pizza Studio. The dining area is a beautiful sight with a large sushi bar set in the center accompanied with high-backed stools and a dark granite countertop where you can sit and watch the sushi chefs in action. An overhead TV screen plays sports above the bar while you wait for your order. We were greeted warmly by the very friendly manager who seated us at one of the tables by the windows. Upon looking at the menu, they had a vast selection of sushi rolls, teriyaki, and tempura dishes. It took me a few minutes to decide what I wanted with several items standing out which I really wanted to try. I finally settled on the Anchorage Roll (deep fried shrimp, spider....yes, that's what it says, avocado, cucumber, crab meat, topped with asparagus and a special house-made sauce). We also ordered the Monkey Brains for an appetizer (deep-fried spicy tuna and mushrooms....perfect for Halloween). The food came out in a few minutes, expertly prepared by the chefs at the counter. The Anchorage Roll was phenomenal with large chunks of delicious crab meat, crunchy cucumber, and soft white rice. The special sauce added a unique mix of salty and sweet flavor along with a small side of a wasabi "flower" for a spicy kick. The Monkey Brains was an apt name which is what the mushrooms looked like with the tuna placed in the middle. This was also delicious on a bed of lettuce with their House dressing. An item that I highly recommend to everyone from a previous visit is the specialty Potato Roll (a deep-fried roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, and crab meat). This was by far one of the best sushi rolls I have had recently along with the Gyoza which is available pan-fried or steamed. The Unaji (BBQ eel and vinegar rice) ordered by a co-worker, was my first time trying eel and it was delicious with a taste like beef but with a softer texture. To-go menus are available at the front counter and there are also numerous lunch and dinner combinations perfect for anyone wanting to try more than one item. I plan on coming back for the Ton Katsu (deep fried pork and vegetables with katsu sauce). This place along with the friendliness of the restaurant staff makes this my top destination for sushi in Anchorage when the craving hits. read more

As we were seated, the waitress poured our glasses of ice cold water, then for starters a steaming bowl of miso soup. Don't ask for soup spoon, you'll be told to drink it the old fashioned way- straight from the bowl. Remember slurping is encouraged. So we ordered the salmon teriyaki dinner plate, shrimp fried rice, beef bulgogi, and the Alaskan Orgasm roll. The salmon was a tad over cooked but the veggies were still crisp, so my mom was happy with the former and I, the latter. Shrimp fried rice was good, had so much flavor without being salty. The beef bulgogi was a total disappointment. A few days ago we had pork bulgogi and that was the bomb. My sister and I just had a piece to taste and took the rest home. Hopefully I could salvage it somehow. Lastly, the Alaskan Orgasm did not take me to the heights that I was expecting. My eyes didn't roll, nor did I sweat as promised, maybe from the lack of heat. Service was ok, maybe if we were greeted with less condescending attitude when asking for soup spoons then this would've been a 4 star review. So at best a 3.5, all in all a solid 3. read more

The server was NOT friendly, but also charged 18% gratuity on a table of 4, to include, (2) Adults/(2) Children and an Infant. I'm sad at the fact that I will have to review this Resturant at zero stars. The food smelled amazing, yet we have to wait for 15 min for someone to acknowledged us. When we arrived, the owner of the restaurant greeted us but told us where we could be seated. While I waiting for our server, there was at least 5 times that we had eye contact yet she walked by us without saying a word. I can see from across the aisle she didn't want to greet us which made me extremely uncomfortable. My husband was very hungry and we felt unwelcome. When we walked out of the Resturant, she had a confused look as if we where the problem. The fact that we Arrived 8:15 pm and left by 8:40 pm is just bad service. I don't recommend this restaurant. 3.5 stars! Exceeded my expectations. Fresh ingredients and presentation won this sushi spot 3.5 stars. Still, it didn't beat favorite sushi restaurant in terms of menu items, service and ambience. As for the food... My roll was good. It wasn't as delicate as some varieties of the same till I've had in the past. I forget the name but it was the roll without sushi rice and wrapped in cucumber. I recommend this for anyone who loves the roll minus the rice! My dad's bulgogi was tasty but way too oily. If have to say the same for the tempura. It had a great crunch but too much batter and it was very oily. The gyoza was delicious and so was the salmon skin salad. read more

I eat a lot of sushi in my travel industry career. I go to ear here as much as my favorite place in town ( not here). ( update, favorite place closed, this is my fav now). I go here because it is a great mix of fast service, great price, and descent sushi. I must mention that they dump copious quantities of sauces from their many ketchup containers on otherwise good rolls. I always ask for them to skip the sauce. That way I can enjoy the sushi. If they squirted 1/4 the amount of sauce on top. It would be perfect. You get what you pay for good sushi. Good price. Real fast service.' ----- 7-10-18 update Kacey, sushi chef, is ALWAYS smiling. I used to come here all the time for many years, and remember the food and service always being good. However, this time I went with a group of 6 friends (it was a late-ish Monday night so not super busy) and they flat out refused to serve us even though there were seats available and we said we didn't mind being split up, or waiting til more tables cleared. Samurai Sushi has the friendliest sushi chefs I've met in Anchorage. Kacey is ALWAYS there when I go for sushi. After the first few times, he remembered me and would make small talk. Now when I come in, he has full blown conversations and we really connect. I always sit at the sushi bar, because I'm fascinated by all of the sushi they produce. I also try and pick up a few tips and tricks for when I make sushi at home. I've had just about every sushi on the menu they offer, with the exception of extremely spicy sushis. I'm not too big into spice, but I try! My two favorites are the Muldoon Roll (named after Muldoon road which is where Samurai is) and the Viagra Sushi Dinner Combo. The Muldoon Roll has many different flavorful sauces and comes with orange and apple slices. The fruit is extremely refreshing after eating the sushi. The dinner combos (which come in 3 varieties) are nice because you get a sushi roll, 5 pieces of nigiri (fish slice on a little rice ball), and onigiri (rice ball filled with deliciousness and wrapped in seaweed). With the dinners, there's no need for another roll or any more food. They leave you filled (unless you have a bottomless pit for a stomach)! read more

We frequently went to this spot because it's the closest to our house but the past four times we have gone there I was borderline shocked- each time for a different reason. I am from California and I'm spoiled as far as sushi goes so I tried not to be too critical but I judge sushi spots based on 1) miso soup and 2) quality of the fish on its own without any rolls or anything to mask it. The last time my boyfriend and I went here the chef told us he would give us the "special cut" of salmon... when I received the salmon I ordered I was kinda insulted? Giant tan/ beige/ brown streak taking up about a quarter of one of the pieces (nigiri this time) the fish was tough and I had a REALLY hard time with it. My boyfriend ordered udon... (he's in the army he will eat anything) but he didn't finish it. He said it tasted like "sea water" The service however, is ALWAYS great so I feel bad leaving a brutally honest review... but the quality of the food is consistently under par. If it were one or two instances I would look at it like hey - everyone has bad days but it's been pretty much every time we've gone that our food was..... not delicious. read more

Don't let the location fool you. This place has top notch food and their presentation is what every sushi lover should expect. The food is fresh, and priced accordingly. It's a great date spot if you don't want a crowd but want higher quality foods. They have a pretty extensive menu as well, anywhere from soba to sashimi. The service was great too.
