Burke is a food desert but Hunan West provides at least one viable dining option when in the mood for Chinese food. Hunan West offers fast and easy take out, delivery as well as a dine in option. There egg drop soup is among the best that I've had and their General Tso's is delicious. They offer brown rice as an option with all dishes. Usually, I use Hunan for carryout service and I have always found them to be efficient, courteous and professional. Typically, my meal is ready within 10 minutes for pick up. They have a digital board that provides the status of each carryout order so you can gauge exactly how long you have to wait (if you do). I highly recommend Hunan West as the best Chinese food option in Burke. read more

EDIT: I have since tried both the beef and broccoli AND the highly rec'ed crispy beef proper. Beef and broccoli: the broccoli was fresh, the sauce was good, but the beef was rubbery. Crispy beef proper: opened the container, and holy crap, it smelled effin awesome. Took a bite and it tasted awesome. A few bites later it tasted too sweet, and I realized how chewy it was when my jaw began to ache. If you love General Tso's or Orange chicken, you'll probably love crispy beef proper. Also tried the scallion pancake- and was SORELY disappointed. Very tough, no sauce to dip it in. Nothing like the pancakes at Korean restaurants. And one last note- had the curry chicken again and it was just as flavorful and fragrant as the first time. (Really appreciate the elderly owner delivering to me during a snow- and freezing rain storm too!) It was fresh and flavorful. Great aroma. Not at all greasy. All white meat chicken, and tender-crisp green pepper, onion, and carrot. Prepared very quickly, too- less than 10 min for carry out. Spring rolls were greasy but delicious. I only gave 4 stars because I can't bring myself to try any of their beef dishes, especially after reading some of the other reviews, and I will only give a Chinese restaurant 5 stars if they are good with beef (it's hard to mess up chicken). Hi, I came yesterday with my friend. I ordered combination low mein. The shrimps were fine but the meat take old. Like vinegar. The meat was passed the fresh day. I spoke to the owner/manager and she said that because i didn't want msg the food tasted different. These people always want to be right. See other reviews. No apologizing. It is not true. The meat tasted old/bad. I ended up take it home for my dog. Dido for my friend, she could not eat her dish and the chicken was raw in the middle. Her food went to my dog too. I almost felt like throwing up having the bad taste in my mouth until my friend gave me peppermint for my mouth to remove the bad taste. We will NOT come back there. read more

This is our go-to take-out for Chinese! It was late on Halloween and we wanted to dine someplace close so we wouldn't have to fight trick-or-treater traffic. We decided to try 'dine-in'. For a late night on a Saturday, the place had a few occupied tables. The staff was very accommodating. They work lunch and dinner shifts, so we actually see the same servers all day. We went crazy for Chinese. The vegetable egg rolls were piping hot and loaded up with cabbage and other veggies. The entrees started coming out: Crispy Sesame Beef and Salt and Pepper Shrimp. The shrimp had strips of basil that gave it a nice flavor. The sesame beef was a large portion and very flavorful. We complemented everything with combination fried rice and spicy green beans. AGAIN, these were very large portions. We packed up about 4 to-go boxes for a later meal. We really enjoy this place. The food is always fresh, and the service is fast. read more

I have been a regular for many, MANY years. The interior is a typical sit down chinese restaurant- a little tacky, a little old- but the food and service are good enough to deserve 5 stars. I've ordered carry out at least once a month and also ordered for big parties and meetings. They have not failed me yet and I don't see them doing it any time soon. Here's what I recommend: - General Tso's Chicken (perfectly sweet, tangy, and juicy) - Beef and broccoli - String bean and beef - Moo Goo Gai Pan (for a less syrupy and sweet dish) - Shrimp Lo mein - Get the lunch!! Picked up lunch carryout at this nice Chinese restaurant where I haven't eaten in a long, long time. Needed a quick lunch between appointments and this certainly was quick and very reasonably priced. Ordered chicken and broccoli and opted for the fried rice and regular egg roll. Less than $8, good price! After ordering, was told 10 minutes and went outside to walk around. Came back 10 minutes later and it had just been brought from the kitchen to the front counter. First I sampled the egg roll and it was very tasty, exactly the way an egg roll should be using the correct egg roll shell, not a spring roll shell that some Chinese restaurants try to call an egg roll. Hunan West has the real deal egg roll! Then after noticing a very soupy, saucy chicken with broccoli, I pushed all of the fried rice into the saucy chicken and broccoli so as to not spill the sauce. Mixed together it was just the right consistency and the rice soaked up the sauce which made it perfect. The food was piping hot, just the right amount of flavor so as to not make it overbearing or too salty. The portion size was just right, just filling enough for lunchtime. My go to spot when in VA for chinese. I've been going here since it was a hole in the wall and even then, the service and food were deliciousness. It was updated some years back and when I returned post re-model, the owner (usually on the bar) still remembered my name and had the same warm smile. Living within a few minutes from the restaurant, this has been our go-to place for almost a decade. However we have noticed that the quality and quantity of the food has been getting worse within the past 4-5 orders. The last order of orange chicken tasted as if some of the chicken was rotten, the noodle dish portions were a lot smaller. Their once famous beef strips are over fried and super salty. I am currently looking for a new go-to place but honestly the Chinese food in Burke has been so disappointing almost worth it to drive to Falls Church. I hope this review will push management do regular quality checks within its restaurant and prepare each dish with a higher standard of consistency and freshness. read more

I placed an order for carry out. I went to the restaurant and did it in person. I ordered four entrees, two vegetable fried rice and spring rolls. There was a new girl taking orders this evening. I was told this by the older woman who can usually be seen manning the front desk. I placed my order and repeated myself several times. The ordering process was a bit painful. The new girl was quite slow and made mistakes along the way. I wasn't wild about being the new girls guinea pig, but I let it go. I even repeated my order at the very end, and it was repeated back to me. All was well. I recieved my order and drove home. The vegetable fried rice was executed incorrectly. . . It was a combo fried rice that included shrimp. Both of my young children have seafood allergies. They would have gone into anaphylactic shock had they tasted the rice. So they ate the white rice instead. I called the restaurant and explained the situation. They offered to exchange it if would come back with the combo fried rice with shrimp. I explained that I was bot interested in another 30 minute round trip just to get what should have been given to me in the first place. The rest of the food would have been cold by the time I returned. . . They admitted the mistake. They also claimed they said the order back to me (including the mistake) which they did not. I was very clear that I wished to have vegetable fried rice. . . If they want to train new people thats fine. Its part of any business. Atleast do it with customers eating at the restaurant. That way if a mistake occurs, it can be corrected on the spot. Expecting customers to drive back to the restaurant over their mistake is a bit much. No offer of a refund was forthcoming either. My family has frequented this establishment for the last eight years. We order food from them somewhat regularly. It saddens me that we will no longer be returning; our business will be taken elsewhere. Making a mistake when it comes to food borne allergies is a big deal. We order takeout or delivery quite often. Sometimes their food is great and sometimes just okay. We tend to get their Mongolian beef dish and their eggplant in garlic sauce. Their soups are very good. Their spring rolls just okay. Since they are located only 2 miles from our home, we do find it convenient. read more

This has been my family's favorite Chinese restaurant to go to before I was even born (25 years ago). The owner Alan is the sweetest and he makes sure everything turns out great for his customers. Always such great food. It's hard to find good take out food but this tops it! Eating inside is always nice too- very cozy! This place is a local favorite. They are a pretty solid Chinese place with all your basics. Nothing too special, but the owners are very nice. If you dine in they give you a tiny cup of sorbet in addition to the fortune cookies at the end of your meal, which is a nice touch. My only complaint: They don't de-vein the shrimp very well, which is a big enough deal for me that I will not order from them when I'm in the mood for shrimp fried rice. read more

Very bad place! Decided to give it a try, although I don't like to experiment and I deeply regretted. My husband is vegetarian and we asked if the hot and sour soup has meat in it. They said there is no meat and we asked couple more times to confirm ( since their English is very bad ). After we got home, it turned out there is CHICKEN in the soup! The meat in the Cleopatra chicken we got for the kids was so difficult to chew! The Neptune supreme meal supposed to have calamari inside- not even a trace! After a period of time, tried them again...ordered delivery today; one-hour plus about 15 mins; food cold. (called to try to track delivery after hunger came on before the one-hour mark-- "on the way") Tried going on-line to register my displeasure but could not find a link. Called the number and just got "ah, not our fault... -- we don't deliver to your address...after years of delivery"? Bottom line is be careful -- when they're spot on, they're pretty good -- based on in-restaurant dining -- beware of delivery (or very late delivery). Hunan West is a somewhat more "upscale" Chinese restaurant situated in the Kingspark Shopping Center. My boyfriend and I were deciding between the four eateries (if you consider Domino's one), and we opted for Chinese. I was in the mood for Chow Foon (a wide, flat noodle dish). To my surprise, the restaurant was actually quite busy for a Tuesday night. Must be good, right? Well, not necessarily. The boyfriend ordered Tofu and Vegetables (Brown Sauce on the Side) and I ordered Chow Foon with vegetables. Hunan West actually has 15 vegetarian items on the menu, plus about 3 vegetarian appetizers. That was nice, but I don't think Chinese food of all Asian food is meant to be "vegetarianized" (but Sunflower does it pretty well). My noodle dish was a little too salty with not enough vegetables. Same goes for the Tofu dish, there was way too much tofu. They don't skimp on the portions. They're freakin' huge! The service was really friendly though. Our water glasses were refilled almost every five minutes (or less). We drink like fish and it's a major pet-peeve and common dining no-no if our glasses are left empty. (Restaurant managers, take note!) I wouldn't come back again, but that's because the food didn't exactly please my vegetarian tastes. If you're an omnivore, who knows. I just spent $50 on 3 items. Beef & Broccoli, Fried Orange Chicken, and Crispy Beef Sesame The only thing good was the beef and Broccoli. The chicken tasted like burnt oil and the crispy beef was so tough with no sauce and tasted like the bottom of a burnt oiled pan. I called to let them know about the beef.. only because it was so tough I could not eat. They didn't care.. stated sorry you don't like but that's how we cook it. Did not try to send something else out, or discount my next order.... NOTHING. They seemed like they just don't care... they just want your money and it doesn't matter to them that the customer is unhappy. I WILL NEVER ORDER OR GO THERE AGAIN. read more

2.5 Stars You get full, it's cheap, sometimes its tastier than other times. I get lunch specials here from time to time and I like that I can call and pick it up fairly quickly. The kung pao chicken was very tasty. The general tso and orange chicken, and the curry chicken were very mediocre sometimes. (once some of the chicken was kinda dry and burnt..) Honestly the quality of food from here is medium low.... However I still eat here cause it's cheap, i'm kinda cheap, and i always end up with 2 meals worth of food. And hey, two meals of food for 5-7 bucks is pretty good hahahha. When I want something nicer I pay for it, this satisfies my.. im hungry... and i need to eat something crave. Submitted an online take out order early New Years Day. Arrived to pick up food to find the establishment dark and front door locked. As I was leaving the door opened. I went into the dark restaurant where my order was waiting. Upon arriving home we found the food to be lukewarm at best and notice spring rolls were soggy. You get more food for your dollar than any other Chinese restaurant, plus they are the fastest servers I've ever seen.
