Egg Drop Soup & Wonton Crackers
    Jon T.

Came here one day for a quick lunch before going grocery shopping. My family used to order take out from here numerous times but I was curious about the experience of dining in the restaurant. Service was quick, I looked at the menu prior to visiting the place and I was promptly given water and tea. The ambiance was quiet but relaxing, calm music was playing in the background. I got General Tso's Chicken with Plain fried rice, a vegetable spring egg roll and instead of a drink I got Egg Drop Soup. The Egg Drop Soup wasn't too salty but it was also extremely hot. I had to wait a while before delving into eating the soup. With the wonton crackers they are pleasant and just reminds me of comfort. The General Tso's Chicken with Fried Rice is good, tastes like what you'd get from most take out places. It was filling and I enjoyed eating it. The Veggie Egg Roll, standard fair as well but with duck sauce it's pretty good. I'll have to come back here to try out more of their take out. I do think dining in, the experience was great and I am happy to have given this restaurant a visit!

    "Crispy" "Shredded" Chicken

I ordered Crispy Shredded Chicken, which was supposed to be "hot and spicy" and it was none of the above. The chicken was floppy (not crispy) was cut into chunks (not shredded), and was drowning in sweet sauce (not remotely spicy). This is one of the "Chef's Specials" and it failed to deliver. I added to my order the vegetable lo mein, which had three pieces of undercooked broccoli, a few pieces of sauteed onions, two or three pieces of mushroom, and one piece of shredded carrot. Clearly the vegetables were an afterthought. The noodles themselves were oily and flavorless. At least this dish I can "plus up" to save it. Likely my adolescent child will eat the sickly sweet chicken. I hope they don't get too attached tho, cuz I am not going back to Szechuan Star.

This was a quick and efficient takeout. I probably overestimated how Szechuan it was, as compared to the last place I went for this cuisine. The tofu they delivered was a fairly basic brown sauce dish, but it had an appealing vegetable mix and there are many times where I wanted this sort of dish done this well and didn't find it. Ordering some vegetable dumplings proved to be a good decision as well as there were plenty of them and they had a nice mix. A solid takeout experience, and they had a nice vegetarian selection and lunch specials.

I've had lunch at Szechuan Star a few times and have also ordered takeout many times, and I have nothing but great things to say about this place. The food and service have always been top-notch, never disappointing. It's a small restaurant, but it's clean and cozy, with a welcoming atmosphere. The staff is friendly and always goes above and beyond, paying attention to every detail to ensure customers are happy. The food is consistently delicious, and the prices are unbeatable, especially with their lunch specials. For anyone local, this spot is a must-try if you're craving flavorful Chinese food with excellent service!

Family was craving some Chinese food and was eager to try this place. A great price with healthy portions, but overall the dishes were all bland to us. It required adding soy sauce and hot oil to give it a little more taste. We may try again on another day. Enjoy!

I almost forgot about Szechuan Star, and I'm so glad that I remembered them to try for lunch! Their menu offers various hot and cold appetizers, soups, moo shi items, fried rice, lo mein, chow mein, poultry/pork/beef/lamb/seafood/vegetable entrees, house specialties, and lunch combos. My family and I came here for an earlier lunch, and we ordered: +Crab Rangoon - came with 6; they were crispy and filled generously with the cream cheese and imitation crab mixture; no sauce is provided, but there are plenty of sauces at the table! +Kung Pao Beef lunch combo - the combo specials run from Monday to Friday, and you choose between a vegetable spring roll or egg roll; white rice or plain fried rice; and, soup or a can soda +Crispy Shredded Beef - this was not overly cooked and it wasn't that sweet, which was great! Generous portion! Don't forget to ask for their house mustard - it is thick, creamy, and has the right amount of heat to add to your dishes! Service was so kind, friendly, and attentive - our hot tea was never out, and all the food came out, made-to-order and piping hot! Everything tasted fresh and made with love! For dessert, we had fresh orange slices and yummy sugar donut bites - NOM! I am definitely a fan of this place and would love to try the rest of their menu the next time - definitely will be adding this to our meal rotation! The restaurant is decorated well, super clean, and very warm & inviting. There's plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot. Thank you, Szechuan Star! +made-to-order tasty fare! +super kind & friendly staff! +soothing complimentary hot tea! +plenty of parking in the plaza lot

We didn't know how big the portions were since the menu didn't have any pictures. We relied on the photos from yelp or google. We ordered the beef noodle soup with wide noodles (clear broth), peking beef wrap, cucumber salad, braised pork rice, pan fried pork dumplings, steamed pork dumplings, and fried pork chop over rice. The beef noodle soup was good and clean but I would get the thin noodles next time. The wide noodles weren't as bouncy as I would've liked. I would come back for the cucumber salad and the peking beef wrap. All of our orders came reasonably on time after each other but we were still waiting on the fried pork chop over rice. Time passed as we almost finished with all of our dished until we asked one of the servers if our fried pork chop was coming. The server looked at our receipt order and acknowledged we did order it but told us it was sold out. Not one staff told us it was sold out when we placed the order or even when our other orders came out. We've been waiting this whole time expecting the fried pork chop not knowing it was sold out. We were asked if we wanted something else to replace the order and we decided to get the fried chicken over rice.

There's a lot of lunch specials. I picked the beef fried rice. It comes with banchan and miso soup. The beef fried rice was very good. What was especially good was the delicious black bean sauce that came with the rice. I thought the tasty miso soup was excellent, very rich and silky. Banchan was kimchi, Danmuji fruit and slices of white onion. Accompanying the banchan was a dipping sauce that was similar to, but not the same as the black bean sauce. I will definitely be back.

Peking duck was just ok, very dark in color and did not have that authentic taste. I would not recommend this place for their Peking duck. Even the wrappers had a weird taste the fried salt and pepper pork chops lacked both salt and pepper! Jang Won has friendly, personal service from the Korean ladies who work there. They were super helpful in walking us through the menu and helping us decide how much food to order. We should have listened when they said three dishes would be enough for four people, but we went with four anyway and ended up with delicious leftovers, so no regrets. All the noodles and dishes are shareable portions, which is great for groups. They also fry their meats really well. The pork was crispy and so good, and I totally get why Korean fried foods are so popular. Next time, I would try the chicken since the pork was just a little dry but still very good overall. The spicy seafood soup was incredibly umami forward and so good that I kept wanting more with every bite. The noodles have a slightly chewy yet smooth texture that makes them very addictive. The restaurant has a homey, comfortable atmosphere, and there is easy parking right outside, which is always a plus in Annandale. The reason for four stars instead of five is the kimchi. It was too salty and not fermented enough. For a restaurant in Annandale, we honestly expect better kimchi. That said, the radish kimchi was good. Overall, great food, generous portions, and warm service, just hoping the kimchi improves next time.
