I have been going to this place for years. But recently I noticed they changed their food, service and serving style. Their food, I will say probably above average for the area and the reason they are always busy. Ambiance is nice and clean and menu prices are very reasonable. This could be why they stay busy. All that aside today's experience was not so great. The lady server is all over the place. Given she is an elderly but her service is expedited depending on how big your order is, meaning more you order more tip = prompt service. The food taste has definitely changed and people who have been going there for a long period of time will agree with this. I am not sure if they changed their chef but food was a bit disappointing specially the egg drop soup that tasted horrible!! Other dishes were good but I could tell a difference. We used to come to Hunan West every week all the way from McLean because we loved the food. Now they are under new management and the food has changed---not for the better. They used to make the best homemade vegetable steamed dumplings in the area. Now they've changed them to the standard type of thin dumplings. The scallion pancakes were always fried and oily, but they were soft and yummy. Now they came over-cooked and hard. We ordered string beans and asked that they be mild but they came very Spicy. The vegetable moo shu was good. They also charged us (!) for dumpling sauce when they brought the dumplings to the table and duck sauce when we asked for that. I've never had an Asian restaurant charge for sauces at the table! Finally, the service was always great there. There used to be a server who knew our order and our names every time we would come in and make us feel so welcome. She left. The new server is not attentive. He doesn't check in you after you get your food and just went to the bar to watch tv for a good 10-15 min until he finally saw we needed more water and wanted our check. I use to come here for lunch when I was in my late teens/20s I remember it being really tasty. I called in a takeout order after moving back to the area a few months ago, I didn't see the owner just some young ladies at the front and a older lady who, I guess could of been the owners wife, anyway she was really pushy and couldn't use the register at least it seemed that way so I pay for my food and get in the car because I was going to it in my car and open up the food and there were no utensils and the combination fried rice only had chicken and roast pork no, shrimp or steak like I remember them having the wonton soup was good luckily I had plastic utensils from another place since I always eat on the run. Pretty good Chinese delivery. We only ordered beef chow fun (foon) and beef pan fried noodle. The chow fun was very good and well cooked. The flat noodles did not stick together like some places. The pan fried noodles was not to our liking. We like the thin egg noodles, but these are the thicker I guess lo mein type noodles that are fried. The sauce, veggies and beef were cooked well though. The main place I've been able to find the skinnier pan fried noodles is Mui Kee so if you know a place closer to Fairfax/Burke give me a shout! I'd definitely give them another try when in the mood for Chinese delivery. read more

This has always been our go to Chinese restaurant. I have been eating here since the 80s. Sadly I won't be eating here anymore. The quality of the food is way way off. We had ordered here several months and I ended up getting sick after eating one of the shrimp dishes. I did not think it was the food but you never know. Then we ordered about a month or so ago and my husband said the food was awful and not to order there again. We were too busy tonight to cook and decided to give them one more try. We always get the Mooshu Pork and the green beans - both did not have the same flavor and the beans tasted weird. I have been coming here since I was a kid and honestly it set the bar so high for Chinese food that few have ever come close to it. What this place excels in is American takes on Chinese food. If you want to complain that egg drop soup is not truely Chinese then this is not the place for you, BUT if you want a taste of a truly American cuisine made with the time and care it deserves then you are in luck. If you ever wondered what 'good' General Tao's tastes like or 'good' Orange Chicken give this place a try. Personally I am a fan of their 'crispy beef proper'. I had to give this place 1 star because I wasn't able to submit my review but It really deserves 0 stars not because of the food because I did not even get a chance to try it. I went in with my son and cousin and two of her kids. We were seated and ignored. Every person who came in after us got drinks and appetizers. It was not busy at all we were absolutely ignored. After 30 minutes we got up and as we were Leaving she looked our way. I did mention to her how badly I felt and why we were leaving. Beautiful interior. It's a great mix of traditional Chinese restaurants, with the Chinese zodiac placemats and the art on the walls, but with a great modern update with the furniture and lighting. Menu has all your basic Chinese restaurant items. I went with what I know, general tso's chicken, shrimp fried rice, and fried tofu with mixed veggies. All were very tasty. If you can make it to lunch I absolutely recommend you do. The lunch special includes an egg or spring roll, a bowl of soup, and a helping of either white or fried rice. It is an incredible deal, you get so much food!!! My husband is a pretty big eater and even he struggled to finish all his food. The hot and sour soup is great. The general tso's didn't quite have the familiar sweet heat that I'm used to but it was still tasty!! Bottom line: nice atmosphere, great value. read more

As residents of Kings Park, we are particularly fond of Hunan West. My favorite dish is the General Tso's chicken (white meat only) and hubby has enjoyed every dish he has tried. We particularly like that their luncheon specials are offered on Saturday as well as during the workweek, a delightful bonus. They have recently begun to offer delivery service, which we have used twice. On both occasions the food was delivered quickly and was hot and delicious. And for 7.95, depending on what entree you get of course, you start with your choice of soup, choice of egg roll or spring roll, and lunch entree. I've always ordered the hunan beef. Absolutely tender beef slices with String mushrooms, Broccoli and baby corn. Menu says it also comes with bamboo shoots but I never seem to find them in dish haha. Nonetheless, I highly recommend anyone in the mood for a good lunch, to pay this place a visit! My parents like the Thai basil chicken, my husband likes the Crispy Beef Proper and I like the Happy Family (beef, scallops, chicken, shrimp and lots of veggies). Food has great flavor. Reasonable portions. Their egg rolls are huge and delicious. If you dine in, you get a little cup of sherbet as a palette cleanser. Fruity and sweet. First, all previous visits to Hunan West have been fair to very good. This time, all of us who ordered carry out for a big family gathering were dissapointed. The Lo Mein was fine, the Spring and Egg Rolls were fine, the rice, fine. It was the main dishes. The Beef and Broccoli clearly was just reheated stuff from past few days, as was General TSO and Orange Chicken, it was palatable-but nothing like it has been in the past. THe Mongolian Beef was not cooked thoroughly. Leftovers are fine, but not at the ridiculous prices being charged to us. Frankly, what we got today, could have been beaten out by the nearby McDonalds and Subway. To top it off, the manager or whoever taking the order was definitely not a people person-grumpy and curt. HUNAN WEST HAS JUST MADE MY LEAST FAVORED RESTAURANT LIST. I have been visiting this restaurant for nearly 30 years. I have watched it decline and then almost miraculously recover after closing for renovation. Today I have declared Hunan West to be "dead in the water" and most certainly dead tome personally. My wife and I have used their carry-out service for the past 6 months and have noticed that the quality (to say nothing of the QUANTITY) of the delivered food has gradually diminished. One of my favorite appetizers has been their Vietnamese Summer Roll, but I have seen the amount of shrimp decreased and the moist wrapper frequently torn or cut. In fact the two most recent orders arrived home with large tears in the wrapper that required I use a fork or chopsticks to eat it. Tonight, my Summer Roll arriveD home with its wrapper evidently missing; it had been completely cut or torn open and folded under the contents of the roll. When I returned to the restaurant, the manager/owner's response was in essence, "So what, accidents happen." I told him I expected a portion of the meal to be comped because of the inconvenience he had caused. Instead he reduced my bill from $25.20 to $22 representing A PARTIAL REFUND of the $3.75 appetizer and told me he was giving me a deal... Horse pucky! So my advice:AVOID HUNAN WEST LIKE THE PLAGUE. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Rude, disrespectful management! I ordered a $50 order for delivery. After an hour of never receiving it, I called and they told me that I said it was for pick up. I definitely never said it was for pick up, but they continued to argue with me, yell at me, and refused to give me any form of discount. When I called back to cancel my order as I knew it had been sitting room temperature for an hour, they hung up on me. The delivery person came and insisted that I pay full price for the order. Knowing that it was not his fault, my husband gradually paid the full price for the meal which was cold & we had to reheat it in the microwave. I will never set foot near this place again. read more
