While I overall enjoy the food. They will only provided their FRIED DUMPLINGS in styrofoam for delivery. They used to put the dumplings in a soup container or rice container if I asked (at a small fee) but apparently not anymore. Consuming styrofoam is so unhealthy and so dangerous and someone who is currently manage their cancer they are mindful about things like styrofoam. They insisted that the styrofoam wouldn't dissolve but they lied. What a waste of money. For these reasons I encourage people to find another place for Chinese food. read more

Hunan west is fantastic. We recently visited and had a wonderful time and the service was very good. The Mai Thais were exceptional and the food was just as good. I really enjoyed the new fried bun desert they added to the menu. read more

I usually do takeout here. The staff is always friendly and the food comes out hot and quickly. The crispy eggplant is amazing!

We were in the area and decided to try Hunan West. Huge disappointment! I ordered the crispy chicken. The chicken is supposed to be cut in small strips; however mine came out with big fatty chicken pieces. There was nothing crispy about that chicken dish. It smelled like raw chicken and was absolutely gross. Also, the lady at the restaurant, she might be the manager or owner, was very dismissive and rude. We will not be returning to Hunan West. read more

I have been going to this place for years. But recently I noticed they changed their food, service and serving style. Their food, I will say probably above average for the area and the reason they are always busy. Ambiance is nice and clean and menu prices are very reasonable. This could be why they stay busy. All that aside today's experience was not so great. The lady server is all over the place. Given she is an elderly but her service is expedited depending on how big your order is, meaning more you order more tip = prompt service. The food taste has definitely changed and people who have been going there for a long period of time will agree with this. I am not sure if they changed their chef but food was a bit disappointing specially the egg drop soup that tasted horrible!! Other dishes were good but I could tell a difference. I am not sure if I will be returning anytime soon. read more

We used to come to Hunan West every week all the way from McLean because we loved the food. Now they are under new management and the food has changed---not for the better. They used to make the best homemade vegetable steamed dumplings in the area. Now they've changed them to the standard type of thin dumplings. The scallion pancakes were always fried and oily, but they were soft and yummy. Now they came over-cooked and hard. We ordered string beans and asked that they be mild but they came very Spicy. The vegetable moo shu was good. They also charged us (!) for dumpling sauce when they brought the dumplings to the table and duck sauce when we asked for that. I've never had an Asian restaurant charge for sauces at the table! Finally, the service was always great there. There used to be a server who knew our order and our names every time we would come in and make us feel so welcome. She left. The new server is not attentive. He doesn't check in you after you get your food and just went to the bar to watch tv for a good 10-15 min until he finally saw we needed more water and wanted our check. Sadly, we will not be going back to Hunan West anymore for our weekly outings. read more

I use to come here for lunch when I was in my late teens/20s I remember it being really tasty. I called in a takeout order after moving back to the area a few months ago, I didn't see the owner just some young ladies at the front and a older lady who, I guess could of been the owners wife, anyway she was really pushy and couldn't use the register at least it seemed that way so I pay for my food and get in the car because I was going to it in my car and open up the food and there were no utensils and the combination fried rice only had chicken and roast pork no, shrimp or steak like I remember them having the wonton soup was good luckily I had plastic utensils from another place since I always eat on the run. Overall food was meh not really thinking I would come back read more

I ordered triple delight for lunch. It came to the table hot and steamy. Large chunks of beef and chicken and several large shrimp. The brown sauce was delicious. When I left the table I forgot my hat. The staff came outside and brought it to me. Lovely service read more

Pretty good Chinese delivery. We only ordered beef chow fun (foon) and beef pan fried noodle. The chow fun was very good and well cooked. The flat noodles did not stick together like some places. The pan fried noodles was not to our liking. We like the thin egg noodles, but these are the thicker I guess lo mein type noodles that are fried. The sauce, veggies and beef were cooked well though. The main place I've been able to find the skinnier pan fried noodles is Mui Kee so if you know a place closer to Fairfax/Burke give me a shout! I'd definitely give them another try when in the mood for Chinese delivery. read more

Classic American Chinese food is elevated to a higher quality at Hunan West. I have been coming here since I was a kid and honestly it set the bar so high for Chinese food that few have ever come close to it. What this place excels in is American takes on Chinese food. If you want to complain that egg drop soup is not truely Chinese then this is not the place for you, BUT if you want a taste of a truly American cuisine made with the time and care it deserves then you are in luck. If you ever wondered what 'good' General Tao's tastes like or 'good' Orange Chicken give this place a try. Personally I am a fan of their 'crispy beef proper'. I don't know if it is even on the menu, but man it is good. Just ask for it and they will know what you are talking about. read more

This has always been our go to Chinese restaurant. I have been eating here since the 80s. Sadly I won't be eating here anymore. The quality of the food is way way off. We had ordered here several months and I ended up getting sick after eating one of the shrimp dishes. I did not think it was the food but you never know. Then we ordered about a month or so ago and my husband said the food was awful and not to order there again. We were too busy tonight to cook and decided to give them one more try. We always get the Mooshu Pork and the green beans - both did not have the same flavor and the beans tasted weird. As much as we have enjoyed their food in the past the quality is so far off that we won't be returning. I don't know what is going on but they have lost long time loyal customers. read more

Ok, service. Food was warm, not hot. Now charging for refills, then please DO NOT bring me a cup full of ice! I had a better experience this time. Food was great and they give you a good quantity.

My wife and I have eaten at Hunan West many times and have been well satisfied, whether we eat in or take out, but unfortunately this time we must have picked the wrong things off the extensive menu. A disappointing visit and hopefully not indicative of a change. I'm sure we will be back in early 2023 for another go. read more

Hunan West is a family favorite!! They have always delivered delicious meals. I've tried almost the whole menu, and it's been quite a ride

I enjoy their food only when I order take out. The service is pretty bad! The lady that runs the place is extremely rude. My family and I went to have dinner a couple of times and she treated us really bad. Poor service and lack of customer service. I do not recommend it to dine in. read more

Poor quality food, mostly all frozen and not cooked properly so when the arrived it was cold.

Old reliable neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Easy online ordering, reasonable prices.

Service is excellent and attentive. Food tends me air on the salty/oily side and can be a little overwhelming. The prices are fair, however.

Beautiful interior. It's a great mix of traditional Chinese restaurants, with the Chinese zodiac placemats and the art on the walls, but with a great modern update with the furniture and lighting. Menu has all your basic Chinese restaurant items. I went with what I know, general tso's chicken, shrimp fried rice, and fried tofu with mixed veggies. All were very tasty. If you can make it to lunch I absolutely recommend you do. The lunch special includes an egg or spring roll, a bowl of soup, and a helping of either white or fried rice. It is an incredible deal, you get so much food!!! My husband is a pretty big eater and even he struggled to finish all his food. The hot and sour soup is great. The general tso's didn't quite have the familiar sweet heat that I'm used to but it was still tasty!! Bottom line: nice atmosphere, great value. read more

I had to give this place 1 star because I wasn't able to submit my review but It really deserves 0 stars not because of the food because I did not even get a chance to try it. I went in with my son and cousin and two of her kids. We were seated and ignored. Every person who came in after us got drinks and appetizers. It was not busy at all we were absolutely ignored. After 30 minutes we got up and as we were Leaving she looked our way. I did mention to her how badly I felt and why we were leaving. I never in my life have ever been treated like this at any establishment I have never experienced racism and I hate to say that's what it was but we were the only Hispanic family, every other single family who was in the restaurant was white. read more

As residents of Kings Park, we are particularly fond of Hunan West. My favorite dish is the General Tso's chicken (white meat only) and hubby has enjoyed every dish he has tried. We particularly like that their luncheon specials are offered on Saturday as well as during the workweek, a delightful bonus. They have recently begun to offer delivery service, which we have used twice. On both occasions the food was delivered quickly and was hot and delicious. We recommend that you give Hunan West a try! read more

My family and I have been eating here for years. My parents like the Thai basil chicken, my husband likes the Crispy Beef Proper and I like the Happy Family (beef, scallops, chicken, shrimp and lots of veggies). Food has great flavor. Reasonable portions. Their egg rolls are huge and delicious. If you dine in, you get a little cup of sherbet as a palette cleanser. Fruity and sweet. My one suggestion is to offer delivery--either hire drivers or use food delivery services like Uber Eats or DoorDash. I don't live that far away but it would be nice. read more

This is great sit-in Chinese restaurant! I've always enjoyed lunch there. Great price. And for 7.95, depending on what entree you get of course, you start with your choice of soup, choice of egg roll or spring roll, and lunch entree. I've always ordered the hunan beef. Absolutely tender beef slices with String mushrooms, Broccoli and baby corn. Menu says it also comes with bamboo shoots but I never seem to find them in dish haha. Nonetheless, I highly recommend anyone in the mood for a good lunch, to pay this place a visit! Service has always been exceptional, I forget the lady's name that's always serving me, but she's very quick and super friendly. You get a welcoming feeling as if you're a visitor in their home. read more

In this area there are SO many "Chinese restaurants" that all sling the same canned sauces and same menu. I gave up on chinese food here. I tried Hunan west and i was very presently surprised! This was yummy. The restaurant was clean and didn't feel greasy, The hostess was a bit off-putting, but then again I often get that from teenagers. The restaurant looked nicely appointed and had booth seating and regular table tops. It looked like had regulars and some outside seating. The bathrooms were clean and the service was great! The kids (3 and 1) were somewhat bored and got fussy, but the servers were accommodating and it was just a great experience. FOOD: delicious, not overly cornstarched slime and flavorful. Shrimp in Lobster Sauce ( I really wanted to try the salt and pepper squid - see my review of Saigon Quan) Very nicely done - corn, peas, and egg and mushrooms in white sauce with shrimp. Chicken and broccoli in white sauce my kids have never eaten so much broccoli before Stir fried spinach. DELICIOUS. try everything and come back. read more

Burke is a food desert but Hunan West provides at least one viable dining option when in the mood for Chinese food. Hunan West offers fast and easy take out, delivery as well as a dine in option. There egg drop soup is among the best that I've had and their General Tso's is delicious. They offer brown rice as an option with all dishes. Usually, I use Hunan for carryout service and I have always found them to be efficient, courteous and professional. Typically, my meal is ready within 10 minutes for pick up. They have a digital board that provides the status of each carryout order so you can gauge exactly how long you have to wait (if you do). I highly recommend Hunan West as the best Chinese food option in Burke. read more

First, all previous visits to Hunan West have been fair to very good. This time, all of us who ordered carry out for a big family gathering were dissapointed. The Lo Mein was fine, the Spring and Egg Rolls were fine, the rice, fine. It was the main dishes. The Beef and Broccoli clearly was just reheated stuff from past few days, as was General TSO and Orange Chicken, it was palatable-but nothing like it has been in the past. THe Mongolian Beef was not cooked thoroughly. Leftovers are fine, but not at the ridiculous prices being charged to us. Frankly, what we got today, could have been beaten out by the nearby McDonalds and Subway. To top it off, the manager or whoever taking the order was definitely not a people person-grumpy and curt. Too much money spent for a sub par meal. The 2 stars were for the Lo Mein and the rolls. read more

EDIT: I have since tried both the beef and broccoli AND the highly rec'ed crispy beef proper. Beef and broccoli: the broccoli was fresh, the sauce was good, but the beef was rubbery. Crispy beef proper: opened the container, and holy crap, it smelled effin awesome. Took a bite and it tasted awesome. A few bites later it tasted too sweet, and I realized how chewy it was when my jaw began to ache. If you love General Tso's or Orange chicken, you'll probably love crispy beef proper. Also tried the scallion pancake- and was SORELY disappointed. Very tough, no sauce to dip it in. Nothing like the pancakes at Korean restaurants. And one last note- had the curry chicken again and it was just as flavorful and fragrant as the first time. (Really appreciate the elderly owner delivering to me during a snow- and freezing rain storm too!) ORIGINAL POST: I usually get Hunan Chicken or Szechuan Chicken when I get Chinese food, but I was feeling adventurous today. On the recommendation of another Yelper I tried the Curry Chicken. It was fresh and flavorful. Great aroma. Not at all greasy. All white meat chicken, and tender-crisp green pepper, onion, and carrot. Prepared very quickly, too- less than 10 min for carry out. Spring rolls were greasy but delicious. I only gave 4 stars because I can't bring myself to try any of their beef dishes, especially after reading some of the other reviews, and I will only give a Chinese restaurant 5 stars if they are good with beef (it's hard to mess up chicken). If I ever get up the nerve, and if they make a great beef with broccoli, I'll edit this review. read more
